[Music] good morning it is monday august the 30th i believe it's about 7 10 and i am on my way to work let's let this car go because they're more important than me um and i'm feeling optimistic going into this week as you know i left school friday and just an exhausted state and it felt like i had all these things that i needed to work on which i did i got some of it done um saturday and then some done yesterday the thing about the weekend is that i'm i i stay pretty busy on the weekends with just my general life just trying to make sure i have myself set up so the amount of time that i would have thought i would have to work was less than what i thought or i think what i'm trying to say is i didn't get as many work hours in as i wanted to but it wasn't because i was just choosing not to work it was because i had to do other things like laundry and grocery shop and i allowed myself a block of time to go to the movies with my mom and my aunts technically one of them is my auntie and the other ladies are just older than me and they're like different parts of the family um but by the time i was wrapping up last night i thought to myself you know what [Music] you're just going to take these little pieces at a time i got a couple of the things that i did get done did make me feel more organized and i feel like this week is going to be the week where not only am i back to exercising in the morning but i'm back to like getting home in a more reasonable hour feeling a little bit more on top of the things that i need to do um this weekend is labor day weekend and i fully intend to make it a weekend where i do no work and get back to that rule of not working on the weekends and knock on wood i'm feeling optimistic that this is going to be the week where that happens we're about a month into school and it's taking me about a month to get to a place where i'm like okay i think things are falling into place where they need to be so i'm heading into work today with that positive mindset in other news i bought this variety pack of k-cups for my keurig and the one that i made last night is the it's like the mcdonald's mccafe and it's pretty good as an iced coffee in case you're curious but um yeah that's all i want to say right now i'm already at work um i will definitely make an effort to be more present today than i was on friday and let you know what i actually did in the classroom but as far as the weekend it was what i thought it was going to be i got to do house stuff personal stuff work stuff um saw aretha yesterday or respect is really the name of the movie but it's about aretha franklin it was really good i'm not really a fan of jennifer hudson the person and i'm not sure why i feel like i don't know i feel like she's putting on like a facade of who she thinks she should be i don't know i just never get the impression that the person that is being interviewed is like the real version of her i have a ton of respect for her talent like you can't deny that she has massive musical talent um and she did a really great job and the movie was good and you know that's that's all i have to say about that um but yeah i'm at work i pray that i'm productive and that no one ruins my day as soon as i get in there because i can't have it all uh paragraph 18 we're just gonna all take a deep breath because i've had to speak to both classes about our language this word is pronounced ears okay it's not the other word don't even try and be like oh i thought it was this because i'm now telling you that it's pronounced fakirs and it is from i think indian culture um and it says i should like to see those old temples of fakirs and jugglers what do you think that work means um i'm going to make sure that it means it's like a type of profession or person here because um in hardcore 16 the old man says i'd like to go to india myself so i'm assuming that that's where it took place yeah and then i know that jesus is like the type of thing that person does point turn the page paragraph 44 the word is consequences we probably all know what this word means it says but i warn you of the consequences uh what's a consequence the um means punishment slash condemn why don't you think a consequence is a good thing well because it has a negative connotation and usually you get a consequence when you do something wrong right so it would be more likely to be negative yes and this person is saying i'm warning you of the consequences if something good is going to happen to you no one's going to warn you because they don't think that you would have an issue with it but give table 7 a point uh paragraph 45 the word is talisman her husband drew the talisman from pocket and what do you think that means um i prefer that this word means a certain object that grants some sort of power of knowledge okay why do you think that i think that because uh he said he drew something for it from his pocket meaning that it it's an object obviously and uh since they're all laughing and like he said if you must wish he said roughly wish for something sensible meaning that it could be something of power yeah um so there's always background knowledge that we need to help us understand the story a little bit better so here are some things that we need to know before we listen to the monkey's paw um it is set in victorian england which spanned from about 1837 to 1901 specifically it's telling you the story takes place in 1902 so technically it's out of what's considered victorian england um so it's not in america these people are english and it's not set in present times it's set in uh 1902. um there's a person named sergeant major morris and he visits the white family after his world travels so the sergeant is coming over to visit he's been around the world to different parts of it and he gives the family a mummified monkey's paw if something's mummified what does that mean is it a fresh monkey's paw dripping with blood if it's mummified that means what um it means that like it's been preserved yeah it's been preserved it's dry um and so he gives this pod he tells the family that he grants three wishes but despite that no one seems to want it so as a reader what should we think about this monkey's fault someone something something's wrong it's bad okay um and as we're reading this is what i want you to do okay um and i'm going to show you a vocabulary video in a second because you may not be familiar with this term so it says during our first read of the story annotate in blue everybody show me your blue highlighter you're going to be annotating in blue looking for these things foreshadowing and we're going to talk about what foreshadowing is in a minute i'm going to show you a very quick clip and it's actually not from vocabulary just a quick clip um move is the mood cheerful is it dark is it calm etc so you're just highlighting anything and you say i think the mood of this story is cheerful then you would highlight anything in the story that gives you the impression that this is a cheerful time okay you're also highlighting for dialogue dialogue is when characters are white talking to each other do the characters say anything that can help us understand the overall theme of the story remember we talked about story elements and i said some stories have a theme and some don't like some have a moral a theme that is trying to teach you and some of them don't this one definitely does so you want to think about is there anything that characters are saying throughout the course of the entire story that would suggest this is the theme of the story this is the lesson the author is trying to teach and then you guys are old enough and you should be always actively reading so if there's anything else you want to highlight because it's strange so it's interesting you have a question about it give a prediction or there's an inference then i encourage you to annotate for those things making sure to use these colors here okay any questions okay we're going to turn off the light um so that i can show you what foreshadowing is mr asks can you turn off the lights hello it is 4 15. it's still monday and i'm actually going to be going home after i finish talking to you guys surprise surprise my optimism from this morning is currently paying off um but before i do let me go back over here i wanted to show you what i thought i was going to show you on friday but i just couldn't um so we're reading all your twisted secrets which is the book that i found over the summer read through and it's just the book that we're reading together as a class for mostly enjoyment so this is the book it is a young adult suspense escape room thriller is how they describe it on goodreads and as i was mentioning last week the kids are pretty into it from the very beginning which is always a good thing and so what we've been doing in the couple of chapters that we've read as i made these little posters with the assistants of one of my aides is each of these posters has the main character's name written on it so robbie amber and then on this side the other characters are diego scott and priya and so after the prologue where they meet all the characters and get some background information on each of them and we discussed like what was their main storyline what were some potential uh side story lines as well as some potential hidden storylines i just kind of asked them their thoughts and they jotted it down on post-it notes according to this color coding system this is from amy grossback on teacherspayteachers i will try and remember to put it in the description box if i don't and you ask for it i'll get it to you so all the colors stand for something and so they were encouraged just as you're listening like jot down your thoughts as you're listening because i'm really trying to push the idea and reiterate the idea that at this stage in the game as readers they should be active readers like actively thinking about everything that they're reading questioning it evaluating it etc and so far um that is probably the thing that they enjoy the most they are enjoying the story and talking about it and hypothesizing what they think is going to happen and making judgments on characters so it has been a lot of fun and i hope that continues to be the case in both classes so that was really all we did on friday um my my homeroom class had to catch up with my switch class so they finished listening listening to let them play god and then we did the skill lesson together which was on authors purpose so today we moved on to our next selection in study sync which is the monkey's paw and i think the key to making study sync more engaging than what it is if you just kind of go through the book is like making sure to build background knowledge making sure to kind of map out how you want to play or share the audio with students and so this was one of the things i worked on over the weekend that i feel like worked well i made this slide presentation this one is not from canva this one is from slides slides slides ago slides go and i just always look for a presentation that fits the feel and the mood so this is the title slide and then this is the building background part and it's for the kids but it's also to keep me on track on what i know that i need to discuss before we get into things and the order in which i want to do things so i told them before reading here's what we need to know that the story is set in victorian england and then i give them a time frame that there's a character named sergeant major morse who visits the white family after his world travels and he gives the family a mummified monkey's paw that grants three wishes but no one seems to want it and um then i said as we're reading because this was our first read i wanted them to annotate in blue which stands for comprehension for these items in particular any example foreshadowing and then i showed them this video which i found on youtube so i think again with studysync you have to be willing to kind of put in the time to find extra things to kind of make the lesson or make the story more accessible to students so i found this quick um i think it was like 90 second video on foreshadowing to make sure they knew what that was and then after i showed the video we discussed it and they knew what foreshadowing was after that also annotate for the mood asking them to identify whether the mood of the story seems to be cheerful dark et cetera dialogue do any of the characters say anything that could help us understand the overall theme of the story so letting them know that there's a definite theme and throughout this whether it be the beginning of the story the middle of the story or the end do the characters say anything that allude to what the theme or the moral of the story would be and then just telling them that i i encourage them to annotate for anything else that they find interesting as we read because that's what they should be doing just telling them that the ultimate goal is that you annotate things because you want to at some point and or we that we transition from me telling them when to annotate or any teacher telling them when to annotate and that they get to a point where they're annotating things that they feel are worth annotating because that's the ultimate goal so um we did that and the monkey spa is always a story that kids enjoy i always forget how long it is and so the audio itself on study sync is about 25 minutes but it definitely takes me longer than that because i do pause at certain parts to make sure they are following the story i pause at certain parts because i want them to make predictions because the story lends itself really well to that and then there's always a lot of discussion around it like what they think is going to happen what they think happens at the end of the story um and so we did that um as far as history we are you leaving i thought i was going to leave before you today i'm done i'm just updating the people on the day so [Music] [Music] [Music] all right we were just catching up um so i think i was telling you what we did in history so on mondays this routine is probably always going to be the same we watch the week in rap they take the quiz do a vocab activity and then the article of the week this week was talking about dealing with stress and strong emotions because one of the new stories and vocabulary was talking about how some states are considering giving students mental health days that they can use so on mondays they don't read the article at all they just make predictions yes they just make predictions and inferences if there's images and graphs and then that was it so given the fact that it's just a little bit after 4 30 and i'm on my way home we're gonna go ahead and say today was a good day my day is not over i do need to go home and cook and walk riley and then i need to get ready for tomorrow because we have like small groups starting tomorrow and i need to decide how i want that to go for the purpose of my sanity i'm gonna go ahead and end the vlog here today um if you enjoyed today's vlog please give this video a thumbs up if you're not subscribed make sure you subscribe if you're not following me on
