An Operating System in 1.44 MBs

hi I'm Snoopy have you ever been in this situation before Fiddlesticks I want to use my computer but the hard drive um I thought it would taste good and my CD-ROM drive I uh for Gore it it's missing so what I really have is a couple of floppy drives but if I use Doss or Linux again I'm gonna get a rash wow that's stupid nevertheless if we have a look within the Tokyo summing Circle I believe we'll have just a thing oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] let's have a closer look shall we [Music] in case you didn't notice or haven't been really keeping up at all um I've moved and am thus recording someplace a little bit different there's a little bit of echo which I'm still trying to figure out somehow so I apologize in advance anywho as you probably guessed today we're going to be having a look at a completely custom operating system called calibrio s uh this is a different reused floppy disk the original one died in a horrible accident I originally released early 2004 is a fork of minuet minute minute minuet yeah that OS calibrio s is an incredibly tiny fully open source operating system with over 40 applications fires only a Pentium classic and 8 megabytes of RAM and boots off of a singular goddamn floppy disk despite taking up about 100 kilobytes of space the kernel supports PCP over IP networking it contains drivers for Radeon and Intel Graphics processors and also a little Vasa to fill in the gaps it has a plethora of support for network and sound cards as long as your network and sound card are within this list of like 10 and it has support for NTFS EXT and fat drives for comparison that's less than the total memory of the original MacIntosh and if I got just the machine to run it on this has a Pentium classic at 133 megahertz about 256 megabytes of RAM and a voodoo 32000 graphics card I know that makes no sense this Pentium 133 does not belong in the same postal code as an AGP slot let alone that much RAM this computer is basically the equivalent of a lawnmower wrench inside of a goddamn Ferrari but I don't care super socket 7 is backwards compatible with regular soccer seven so uh yeah you so everyone still will kill the Liberty OS all we need to do is uh there software installed yeah and uh just turn it on I guess hell yeah and it's not broken why was that so noisy all right it's fine doesn't matter and now I'm at a script God help us oh my God there's nothing there stop look this is a menu which essentially allows us to pass some options to the calibrio S kernel for instance the video resolution or the discs even though this monitor isn't actually 10 24x768 it's actually 1280x1024 to make it easier to see I'll keep it that resolution and also as we can see it's properly detected the graphics card it's a 3dfx card and it's using Visa because of course drivers for 3dfx that would be silly so now we're just going to press enter and now it's going to start booting so now what I believe it's doing is loading files from the floppy disk decompressing them and loading them into memory this is so while you're just running applications you aren't constantly accessing the floppy drive and since it's only like two megabytes decompressed you know you can just store that in memory and there we go the entire operating system is just booted from the time it finishes loading everything into RAM and actually starting the operating system is like less than a second it's crazy somehow we have penetrated into calibrio S as we can see there is a fine and wide selection of applications and I don't just mean a wide selection of file browsers I swear to God there are some other things in here like uh that's the theme to angry well we're certainly looking at that later but I believe the proper place to start is actually those file browsers because they are in the top left the first in the list is a GUI adaptation of midnight Commander from what I can tell select a directory in this window and then another one in this window and then you can move them back and forth so uh yeah it's midnight Commander but in a gy and now this other one is a bit interesting this if you've ever used the windows before which I'm gonna guess you have this probably looks very similar to Windows xp's Explorer yeah Okay so we've got an operating system it has 1.44 megabytes in size and so far we have two file browsers I don't know why they did this but whatever so we've got two file browsers now so this one is called eolite oh window shutters holy that's cool so in case you've never known what window shutters are to conserve like processing power which is very important in this case instead of dragging around a whole ass window you can just drag around the title bar and then you know can just like hide it so yeah that's cool I knew we could do that but no just right click it no wait so yeah if you just right click it piece of oh my God why did I use one of these all right nope put stop if I right click it as you can see that just closes and opens the window I know that was a featuring Mac os9 but not in Windows that's interesting now if we look at the final uh file browser as we can see the calibrio S Dev sure have a thing for midnight Commander because this is literally just midnight Commander so if you want a more uh terminal-esque file browser but then you can also still cheat and use your mouse you have that option I guess no back back back meow uh anyways and over here we've got a calculator which I unfortunately can't show you because I don't know how math works but if you know how the calculator works why is this one option oh my God it's a hexadecimal calculator too holy it's a hexadecimal calculator that that's pretty cool so what's nine times nine yeah that okay check this out all right no yeah that makes sense yeah I don't know how hex works I'm a idiot but anyway all right so now that that's done following the theme of things that computers are usually used for we've got a text editor all right and following the theme of equilibrios of having a couple of everything we have another text editor look they're like priorities when it came to putting things on here I really don't understand why do we need two text editors I don't know but the point is you know it's just a regular text editor you just put some text in here and then you can go to file and Save new file.txt and I'm going to save this and sis which should be the floppy Drive or it's the ram disk uh oh instead of staping it there I'm instead going to save it on uh the floppy drive directly what a disgusting Noise Okay so it's Gonna Save that there nice well there it is now if I press enter there's the file and as we can see just like uh you know notepad plus plus we can create lots and lots of new files and it's basically a tab text editor so that's actually really cool I like to remind you this is running out of Pentium 133 which might not have been the best idea but oh well they said minimum requirement and you know you know me so you know I had to do it so speaking of minimum requirements this text application is a bit interesting so this is animage or animage and image I don't know I'm going to call it animage because that sounds nice so if I click on this it says unsupported processor instruction even though the operating system in most of the core applications are supported on the Pentium 133 there are some applications on here which require instruction sets which are not included on the CPU and that is one of them so now if I try to do anything wait a minute what do you mean it just works now okay how about that time really it's gonna pick up just fine after doing that okay well it's not normally what it does all right well that's cool usually when I try to run a program that's not supported under the CPU instead of doing that what it would normally do is instead do that but then like I'll show crash the Entire Computer well that's good I guess so if I launch this that that works but if I want this it doesn't oh there we go there we go okay so as we can see the entire computer is now basically Frozen if I press the Windows key that does work sometimes but if I press like num lock as we can see it's dead so yeah I know I just got to restart the computer because there's nothing left to do here so I move the mouse it's like you know not not moving it's definitely not moving so also I should mention that like if you have this operating system out yourself and you make a change to one of these options and it like everything up you will need to go and set it back to the default which if you need a reference that's the default because if you don't these settings are actually safe so they're automatically applied which can be handy but if you set something that's broken and expect it to reset and it doesn't reset that can be a pain in the ass now the next thing is called app plus I'm not exactly sure what that does or means or whatever the but the point is if we open it it asks us to mount slash calibri OS but it should already be mounted because that layout is what matches CIS it's just mounted differently enough that I select it it doesn't like it but the thing is if we just go anyway there are still some interesting things here if I were to guess what this is probably for is like having different uh like app packages or something and then loading them into calibrios because calibri LS is a custom operating system it's not really compatible with like dos Linux windows or Linux binaries so it has to be a program specifically for calibrio S and in here as we can see we have an icon editor Easy Shot which is a screenshot tool so if you just want to take a screenshot in take a screenshot which is then saved to Temporary I think yeah it's saved to the temporary directory and then also we have guide it's linked to Nowhere that's cool it's presumably a calibri OS guidebook which they don't have stored locally on the floppy Drive probably because they needed to make room for all of those file browsers I guess so and the other thing is table which is to stay pretty basic uh Excel almost editor so you know you can type things in here and stuff so that's interesting I don't know if we just close this and the last thing we have so somehow is apparently an FTP client we can't actually use anything web-based on this computer right now because I don't have a network adapter compatible with calibria OS but if this works that's like actually insane I don't understand how this fits on here like alone a FTP client a GUI FTB client on this floppy disk I want you to remember that all of this is on here like there's no other storage medium in this entire computer it's just that one floppy disk so yeah FTP client interesting can't use it though which is sad now the next thing here is called Rd safe now what I believe this is for is what it will do is save a copy of the ram disk so this is if you like actually use calibri OS for like editing text documents or whatever the else not have to start from scratch every time so you can save your calibri dot IMG which I'm pretty sure might actually be the entire operating system someplace so you can then write that back to the floppy disk and use it again I'm not sure how useful or easy that is to actually do if you just have a flop beep drive because where would you save this this image is hypothetically bigger than a floppy Drive which you need like two floppy disks one you put the image on and then when you use the image straight to the other floppy I don't know exactly but that's how you do that I guess now now there's this thing which is presumably some sort of manual Reader Program but it I don't know where I would find any I mean apparently this I will open in it um utf-8 it's a book reader that's cool as damn okay so it's a eBook reader and now we have a web browser but we can't use it because we don't have any HTML files I wonder I'm gonna try something all right this is just gonna completely break it isn't it like there's no way this is gonna actually work that would be crazy it doesn't matter it should support mostly everything unless I did it like I don't know HFS plus which I doubt get in there you holy oh there it is so it is upside down piece of all right I should probably fix it it's on the way all right so USB thumb drive inserted so if I just open up I don't know this one holy piss so if I click on this oh my god it works so what I need to do is copy this I can just press F5 which will then copy that over there so now on temp I have a copy of a certain website so now if I just go in here and if I click on this it should open it error unsupported processor instruction no no no no no no no no all right what about if I use a different web browser it won't let me move Windows outside of the view of the monitor oh that sucks I can't move it off screen so wait a minute it can load it it's just not on the CPU oh that sucks well that's cool though USB thumb drive support no way yes I do have the USB on my penny 133 cope about it okay well what about the other one what about netsurf downloading net surf hmm weird oh my God the notifications show on the screen saver is there not oh God is there not a way to dismiss these or are they just there now okay all right well I guess I'm restarting it again hey guys look so people are complaining about the clock on the old set so I replaced it with not a clock such a long Buddha process and we're back again so if we look on this side we have some more interesting programs so first of all we have debug MMX FPU oh yeah there's no AVX where you're going what happens if I load one if I load this program does it show no probably a file compressor um well that's interesting oh so yeah it's an lzma file compressor phasm which if I were to guess this is probably a compiler I don't know if a compiler an assembler are the same thing okay so it's a compiler you have a file compressor you have a C compiler like damn might I remind you this is a single sloppy disk this shit's crazy all right so now I've got you know they actually didn't 1.44 megabytes everyone all right sure so CPU ID so you can oh my god there you go frequency 133 megahertz code name Intel p64c it has no instruction sets that's impressive 0.52 Micron checks out okay so display file speed oh God so this will show smart information for the differently connected drives okay fine oh my God all right graphic bench uh oh test it has a GPU benchmarking tool I don't think it work either uh oh uh um okay all right well that was interesting I couldn't see any of it but compare your results I guess okay network speed really that's how you do it okay have fun with that I guess this will tell you the different PCI devices loaded in the system no doubt so that's cool so this will just show you all the different PCI devices even ones that aren't like physical cards just like stuff on the PCI bus system monitor oh my God so this is telling you the CPU usage on a graph this is RAM usage it got a 50 megabyte Ram disk which I guess that makes sense so that's really interesting I probably should have mentioned it earlier but ghost monitor you can also access it down here and then what it tells you is the CPU CPU frequency MMX technology which this isn't even an MMX the Pentium MMX came after tests Pentium tests May permanently damage your Hardware that'll be fine so it's probably just the CPU stress test as you can see it's using about what everything else isn't using which bumps the CPU up to 100 so that was Ghost monitor netstat yeah okay that wow so we have a network monitor too okay debug board oh right okay that's the same thing docky huh as a doc doesn't it because of course it has a dog you can turn the taskbar off so you can just use the dog oh my God what is that thing MIDI midi no no no no no no no F wait what's this that looks like I'm keeping it so uh as we know the compatibility list for sound cards is actually very very sparse but the first thing on the list is the audio processor for the Sound Blaster live which is actually very sad because I used to have like a generic Sound Blaster life but I looked and I can't find it which means it's probably like 300 miles away from me right now so I put in my sandblaster Live Platinum and uh let's hope that's close enough I guess all right let's hope the son of a actually works CIS panel volume well that's not a good sign let's open debug
