today's poetic Computing shenanigans are brought to you by Squarespace but more on that in a bit Haiku it's more than just an art form it's a unix-like operating system and in the last two or so years it's gone from obscure OS keeping the dream of the 90s alive to today where it's both blisteringly fast and more usable than ever before and perhaps even daily drivable so today let's install the bleeding edge of haiku on this lovely old think pad and see just how far things have come so stay tuned foreign and if you enjoy these self-inflicted pain of wrenching software to work on obscure operating systems just for the fun of it I hope you'll consider subscribing to the channel So lately I've been deep down a weird Unix Rabbit Hole messing around with all sorts of obscure unix-like systems like Solaris and next step and even irex on the SGI which I recently did a bonus video on but it really got me into the mood to go back to an old friend probably my favorite obscure unix-like operating system Haiku which I've tried to daily drive on and off for years the modern open source reimagining and to some extent re-implementation of BOS the coolest and most futuristic operating system of the 90s if you're not familiar with it we'll talk more about it while it's installing but first let's take a look at the laptop that we're going to be installing it on and get it ready to get all high cooed up I cued up who's writing these jokes so this lovely Sleek svelte machine is a Lenovo ThinkPad t61 which I recently picked up at the VCF East June swap meet and from the moment I laid eyes on this thing I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it anyway let's take a quick look at this thing because if there's one thing I love almost as much as Apple power books it's old think pads big beautiful screen with no blemishes whatsoever and an Intel centrino V Pro inside and this centrino is actually a Core 2 Duo t8300 dual core running at 2.4 gigahertz not too shabby it supports up to eight gigs of RAM as far as I can tell although there's only three gigs in here now it has an SD card reader firewire up here and a hardware kill switch for wireless networking two PC card slots a USB port audio in and out ethernet the all-important modem VGA L and along the side here we have two more USB ports DVDs cdrw and uh well unfortunately empty hard drive bay so we're just gonna have to stick a drive in there and hope friction holds it in place although I'm sure I can 3D print something here and of course on the front here we have the most wonderfully satisfying keyboard to type on a track Point knob with three buttons and a track pad with your two buttons here oh most important feature the think light a tiny LED that with a key combination will shine a flashlight down on your keyboard because backlit Keys weren't a thing back then and for the hard drive I went all out with a brand new crucial mx500 500 gig hard drive I want to give BOS the respect it deserves and look at it it's nice and Metal precariously kind of jiggling up and down in the SATA connector there perfect and I want to take a look at the ram here too so we're gonna have to take the Palm rest off of here just a few screws to remove here the Palm rest comes off and there's our memory [Music] this is a one gig Samsung stick and this is I guess yeah the two gig stick all right after a quick rummage I found coincidentally another Samsung stick at two gigs instead of the one gig that was in here pretty nice let's install haiku on this thing right after this word about today's sponsor Squarespace create a fast beautiful and Rich web experience for your business or brand using squarespace's powerful all-in-one platform it's really easy to get started like say I wanted to build a software review and drop technology and enables you to customize every detail of your customers experience on desktop and mobile that's on top of things like optimizing for SEO managing a mailing list watching okay good the hard drive is recognized and we're gonna be installing off of a CD it's probably much better to install this off of a USB stick which is very easy to do so I don't know why I brought this to a CD but I did so let's use it foreign There She Goes all right so we start out in the Haiku installer but as you can see it didn't automatically detect the native resolution of this display so I'm just going to go into the live environment which it's amazing how fast it is and we're going to go into settings screen and yeah there we go 1280 by 800. nice yeah and you can already kind of see how beautiful and fast and responsive the Haiku OS interface is and of course the BOS interface that preceded this yeah let's go into the installer but yeah check it out my favorite part of haiku right here if you hold Alt right alt and drag screens on top of each other look at that all of your windows can be in tabbed groups that's why Haiku has these little yellow tabs such a good feature okay let's uh set up partitions here partition create active partition and now we will partition format in the B file system name it haiku and format and that was questionably fast to format it but okay maybe that's just how good Haiku and the B file system are all right make sure all the packages are selected yep begin all right so while this is installing a little background on what Haiku actually is it was actually an Apple employee who left apple and started the Bee Company and they built the OS and power PC systems to run it on called B boxes B kind of slowly faded into non-existence through a series of questionable directions for the operating system but Haiku picked up the not the pieces but kind of the philosophy it made an open source re-implementation with the original idea of making it fully compatible with BOS applications Haiku OS was in Alpha for very many years something like 20 years of course being a full and fast operating system built by just a pretty small team of contributors but the first beta was released in September 2018 and there have been four betas in total with the most recent one coming out on December 23 2022 and yeah if you're going to install haiku for yourself that's probably what you should install whatever the most recent beta version is because that's the most recent official release we're installing the Haiku development Edition from the most recent nightly which uh actually let me see what that is here about haiku this is hrev 57085 so yeah that's the most recent nightly as of this filming all right so I wanted to film this thing booting into haiku for the first time but it booted so fast I wasn't even able to turn my camera on in time to capture it so hold on let me do a full restart and show you just how fast in real time Haiku boots up got a stopwatch here let's go from hitting the power button to desktop which of course even accounts for the time that the ThinkPad is figuring itself out to boot so yeah the ThinkPad gets to the Haiku splash screen in 13 seconds and from Haiku Splash guy I didn't even hit stop in time okay it was like 20 seconds so the ThinkPad put it into Haiku in we'll say 22 seconds since I missed the stop button uh but only six seconds of those were from the Haiku splash screen appearing to fully loaded desktop that's wild okay so let's start with what I think is the most interesting thing web browser because Haiku always had the web positive browser which is kind of a spiritual successor to net positive which was the BOS web browser because actually one of the things that's much improved in the nightly versions is this version of web positive which has been updated and I guess now it can play videos on YouTube although there's still some flickering and stuff here but what I'm really interested in checking out is a new web browser they're not a new web browser but new to haiku if we go into Haiku Depot which is the Haiku package and software manager oh yeah right here in the featured packages under Network we have gnome web also known as epiphany which is a much more modern web browser than the built-in web positive it's not completely native to Haiku so you know it's not gonna completely follow the Haiku user interface guidelines but it's gonna work a lot better especially on Modern websites and web apps alright so the web web browser is installed oh yeah look at this it's YouTube and wow that loads much better then web positive and look what's right here on the home page a video from Steve Mack 84 about the recent VCF East swap meet and there's audio there's Brian [Music] oh yeah look at this yeah full screen even works let's just turn down the uh quality yeah the quality is already at 480. well it's certainly possible and even enjoyable to watch YouTube videos on Haiku these days that goes a long way to making this daily drivable now you might be saying Sean that's the internet nobody likes the internet anymore what else is there to do on Haiku well you can do serious work these days because tons of things have been ported over to Haiku you have the LibreOffice office office suite you even have stuff like open shot the open source video editor which I tried to use for this Channel at one point when I was doing it all from Linux and here it is on Haiku oh yeah look at this I could totally edit videos from here I don't think it does 4K oh it does look at this like a 5k 8K 16k all right yeah I'm just gonna run my whole YouTube channel from Haiku from now on Ah that's so cool okay okay okay but what happens if your favorite software is not ported to Haiku and it's only on Windows well guess what we now have wine and as we all know wine stands for wine is not nemulator allowing us to run booth 32-bit and 64-bit Windows applications yeah okay wine 64 and then just like Mac OS actually we can just drag things from a window into a terminal and it will fill in the directory path to it which is pretty nice well it didn't work yeah I don't know wine does not seem to like something about this particular computer okay well a quick trip to the Haiku forums and it turns out this is a known thing with the latest versions of the nightlys wine is working supposedly just fine on the beta but the last few nightlys apparently broke it okay one more thing that's very important games and there is actually quite a lot on this front these days well we have dosbox so we can run pretty much any dos games that we want but we also have plenty of stuff natively ported over to haikyuu look at this hexan gz Doom oh breakout ooh moopen 64 is in here awesome PlayStation Portable emulator and that's just featured packages just look at all this stuff in here all these games so we have classic Cube and mind test of course it spawned me underwater yeah look at this uh apparently there's no sound and actually the frame rate's not the best surprisingly okay but there's one more thing that's pretty awesome someone built an installer to actually download and install and run Java Minecraft on here this script I pulled from the Haiku forums but there was even a picture of them using 1.19 even though this script only goes up to 1.15 yeah these version numbers are just hard coded so let me hard code in the latest version and see if we can install that there we go 1.20.1 and now it's downloading the game and Library files from Mojang it's doing it all right Minecraft 1.20.1 is installed and there we can see I experimented with some other ones let's see if this will run well game crashed crash report is saved uh yeah doesn't want to work at the same time we're trying to do this on the nightly version of haiku so probably shouldn't be that surprised that it didn't work okay so I know the title of this video is probably something cheeky like Haiku got awesome now in reality Haiku has always been awesome I mean again I've tried to daily drive this many times over the years and uh was using it for quite a while to try to really learn C plus plus and had some success because there's great guides and it's pretty easy to program for haiku so I definitely encourage you now more than ever to give Haiku a shot whether you have an old computer lying around or you just want to open up virtualbox or on Apple silicon Max UTM runs Haiku flawlessly and if you like these kinds of unixies shenanigans check out the patreon because I'm going to be doing a bonus video on this guy here I just picked up this lovely purple SGI Indigo 10 000 impact we're gonna see if it works because I don't know that it does anyway if you enjoyed this video I'd appreciate a thumbs up and if you'd like to see more Shenanigans like this please subscribe down below and thank you very much for watching and a
