the lady at the bakery told me this was a rocket ship hello this is some guy named Dave in Portugal and today we're going to try some of the most famous pastries and desserts here in Portugal [Music] this is definitely one of the most famous and common ones in Portugal this is definitely one of my favorite pastries in Portugal and let's give it a try it's an egg custard tart that has kind of this burntness on the top which is very good and one of the things that's really important to me about these pastries is that it's not soggy and it has a nice crunch to it so let's go ahead and give it a try that's good see it has this really nice custard on the bottom and the burnt on the top and the crunch is just perfect this is definitely really good it's going to be hard to uh damn I'm definitely gonna have to ride my bike or go on a really big hike after this is a chocolate salami is what they call it uh because it looks like a salami it has this uh biscuit breading in the inside and it's a chocolate roll on the outside and around it it's usually caked in sugar but this one is not it looks absolutely delicious I'm a huge chocolate fan so this is definitely one of my favorite desserts this originated in Portugal and Italy all around the world there is a version of these in many different countries although it's not as popular in the United States and I don't know why because it is better than a brownie in my opinion and that says a lot because I love brownies so let's try this one [Music] mmm wow this one's incredible this is like a no bake type thing so it hasn't been baked it's kind of just like a chocolate mix so it's really soft and the good ones have kind of this incredible grit to it it's really really nice foreign so these ones I tried before in avido the Venice of Portugal the poor man's Venice of Portugal and basically these are eggs inside of these Wafers that are like communion uh Wafers from Catholic Church uh and these were actually made by nuns because they used a lot of egg whites for uh the starches in there to clean their clothes and they had a ton of egg yolks left over so they made these ovish molds I'm completely butchered that name I'm sure but they're really cool and the Portuguese as you can see tend to use a lot of eggs in their pastries which I'm not mad at I love eggs and there's a good amount of protein so let's go ahead and give these ones a try it's really good as you can see the egg yolk is in the inside it's really really nice [Music] foreign Y at the bakery told me this was a rocket but it doesn't look like a rocket to me uh penis cakes are apparently popular in two different towns in Portugal this one came from Caldera and there also is uh penis Ceramics in this town so we got these ones from there and we're gonna go ahead and give it a try oh that's funny they use some kind of almond flavoring in there so it's ironic they use nuts to flavor it and I'm not going to eat the tip of this like that like you all want me to oh it uh the flavor in this one wasn't really my favorite it didn't have much flavor to it kind of this weird like almond thing I think it's more of the penis gimmick that's making it popular but it's a pretty cool gag gift and uh if you get this for like a bachelorette party or something like that it's pretty cool as you can see we have some different shapes and sizes of these ones this is more of kind of a cookie type thing that's dipped in chocolate here and some pink at the top let's go ahead and give it a try that's really good um it's kind of a sugar cookie type thing but a lot less sweet than a sugar cookie would be um it almost has like a like a corn taste going on to it or something like that these are definitely a lot less sweet than uh I thought it was going to be but it's really good I never thought the chocolate balls would taste so good it's really good and then we have kind of this big giant one this is the one the lady said is a rocket ship definitely doesn't look like a rocket to me [Music] I'm not a big fan of these ones to be honest with you it kind of has like that really light Airy kind of hard crunchy flavor to it I know people really like these ones I'm gonna have to pass on these ones and not get these ones ever again [Music] so these ones have like a really hard shell almost like an egg roll type texture or something like that with some powdered sugar that's on the top these ones also apparently came from nuns making these uh so I'm guessing there's going to be some type of egg in the inside of it [Music] that's a really nice flaky texture it's really good inside of it is wow so there's this eggy texture kind of inside of it these things are a mess but there is a eggy texture inside of this like the ovish moles a little bit it's really good and the sugar makes it really nice it's super super flaky and light it's really nice I like that one [Music] it kind of looks like a little egg so as you can see with these Portuguese desserts there tends to be this very strong egg theme to The desserts um I haven't tried this one before so let's give it a go it's kind of like eating a solidified egg yolk with almond I like almond um and the almonds here in Portugal have a really unique flavor to them that are a lot better than the ones in the United States it's very interesting I don't think people in the United States would like this one very much but it is good [Music] okay now this one has it looks like it has a lot of oil coming off of it it's like a bun kind of type thing um it's very interesting it's almost like a Twinkie texture or something like that and I have no idea what is going to be on the inside of it and there is some type of yeah there's nothing inside of it it's just it's just a bun kind of all the way through so let's um there is like a what is that this is kind of a sweep a sweet bun I can't put my finger on the flavor of that I don't think I like that one very much yeah it's not bad it's not bad just not my favorite [Music] okay so this one I have been eyeing quite a bit I like the name uh which means a thousand sheets um it definitely looks like it has had quite a few layers stacked into it and it has this beautiful marbling on the top which seems pretty cool so let's give it a go oh wow that's just like pure sugar um holy trips wow this is definitely the sweetest one so if you're into sweets you're definitely gonna like this if you look at the back of it it has this beautiful wafering on the back which is really nice and Flaky and it's really good but this part right here is too sweet for me um it's just really pure sugar so I don't think I would get this one again but if you like a lot of really sweet sugary taste this would be for you so I've learned today that a lot of pastries in Portugal are made with egg yolks in Catholic convents or phallic cookies and cakes made by pagans quite an amazing contrast isn't it well it's definitely time for me to go on a five mile run or a big hike because I'm already starting to feel a little bit of a Sugar Rush from all this sugar these pastries are really awesome and I definitely recommend checking some of these out if you
