9900k here... its basically the same chip as the 10700K right ?

I got the 9900 like 3 months ago for $400, could have gone for 10th gen but thats another mobo purchase n i actually bought an overkill mobo for my original cpu, i5 8400.

I was worried these upcoming benchmarks on the Ryzen 5000 series was gonna make everything before, obsolete. im glad its holding quite close to performance and hell, even value apparently...

ultimately, this lit a fire on team blue's ass and a very needed one... us, the consumer, will reap the benefits, im sure...

11 more fps average in 1080p gaming with the r7. my question is will that fps number be bigger or smaller at 1440p?

if the r7 was lets say 60-80€ cheaper it would be a no brainer but the issue is its not even available for 450€ as its sold out and 3rd party e-tailer are selling it for 500-600€ here

Here in sweden the 10700k is 100 usd cheaper than 5800x.

just get 10850k. available now for 450 or 400 if you have access to MC. same perf as 10900k so you are looking at equal gaming perf and more mc perf.

[Music] welcome back to harvard unboxed today we're testing the ryzen 7 5800x the new 8 core 16 thread model now yesterday i checked out the extremely impressive ryzen 9 5900x then the day before that the 5950x so that means we've already ticked off the 12 and 16 core models and that's also why i currently have very big bags under my eyes and also bloodshot eyes but that's all part of the fun so let's continue to work our way down at the product stack now this probably isn't the best way to start this review but i've got to say the 5800x looks to be the least compelling processor in the new ryzen 5000 series there's certainly nothing wrong with an 8 core 16 thread processor clocked up to 4.7 gigahertz with high ipc in fact right now you could certainly argue that is a sweet spot for gamers the problem though is the price 450 us is just 100 cheaper than the 5900 x and while that is almost a 20 saving you're also getting 33 fewer cores that means whereas the 5900 x costs 46 dollars per core the 5800x cost 22 percent more at 56 per core hell that's even 12 more per call than the flagship part the 5950x now if you're wondering why amd's position the 5800x so poorly the answer's simple it just doesn't make sense for them to sell it any cheaper as i'm sure many of you are aware the ryzen processors consist of multiple chiplets or smaller dies rather than a single monolithic die like what we see with the intel processors in the case of zen 3 a ccd or core complex die packs eight cores so a cpu like the 5950x features two ccds with all cores enabled for an eight plus eight core configuration then there's a third die called the io die which houses the dual channel ddr4 memory controller pci express gen 4 root complex and a number of soc features such as sata and usb ports so making up a cpu like the 5950x are two ccds and a single i o die the same configuration used by the 5900x but the 12 core version doesn't require fully working ccds rather defective silicon with one or two failed cores can be used with the 5900x each ccd only has six of the possible eight cores enabled resulting in a six plus six configuration making it a 12 core processor and that makes these six core ccds less valuable as they can't be used in the more expensive 5950x or the epic3 cpus so you see where this is going the 5800x and 5600x only use a single ccd but the 5800x requires top shelf silicon with all cores enabled whereas the 6 core 5600x receives the same lower bin silicon used by the 5900x if the 5800x was to come in at roughly the same cost per core as the 5900x it'd cost just 370 dollars but for the sake of this hypothetical let's bump that up to 400 to price match the 3800x which already wasn't a good deal sitting next to the 330 us 3700x but let's go with 400 anyway as that is half the price of the 5950x at this price amd would be making a lot less profit on their highest quality silicon so rather than sell it at a lower margin with a 400 5800 x they're better off saving it for an 800.5950 x or alternatively selling the 5800x at an increased price which is exactly what they've decided to do as amd still wants to offer an eight-core part it does appear as though these eight-core chippers are very valuable and i suspect they're also wanting to save as many as possible for epic three server processors where the margins are even greater all of this does leave the 5800x in a bit of an unfortunate position where it ends up costing more per core than any other ryzen 5000 series processor so for that reason i feel most of you will either end up being up sold to the 5900x or opt to save some money and go with the cheaper six core 5600x a part that i will be looking at tomorrow anyway it's time to test and then we'll re-evaluate the value of the 5800x towards the end of the review for testing the amd cpus the msi x570 godlike was used along with four eight gigabyte g skill trident z ddr4 3200 cl 14 memory modules for a 32 gigabyte capacity and then cooling all test systems is the corsair iq h150i elite caplex io finally please note that for all the productivity testing we're using the geforce rtx 2080 ti but for all the gaming benchmarks i've gone back and updated all of our numbers with the rtx 3090 and i've added some new games in the process so let's get into the graphs as usual we'll start with cinebench r20 the 5800x scored at 5982 points in this multi-core test and that meant it was 22 faster than the 3700x that's a serious performance uplift and it's what we've come to expect from zen 3. also for those of you wondering i didn't bother investing the time to re-test the 3800x this is a process that i dropped ages ago as it's really no faster than the 3700x in this test for example we're talking about a 3 performance boost so if the absence of the 3800x is causing you great discomfort please feel free to add three percent to the 3700 x result now when compared to the 10-700 k it is 20 faster and that is a big performance uplift given both cpu's dupak 8 cores with 16 threads in fact the 5800x is just 7 slower than the 10900k so that's pretty amazing stuff given the intel cpu features 25 percent more cores before we move on with more blue bar graphs here's a look at how the 5800x clocks in each of the cinebench r20 tests for the multi-core test where all cores are heavily loaded the 5800x clocks at around 4.55 gigahertz which is well above the advertised 3.8 gigahertz base clock frequency amd also advertises a max boost clock frequency of 4.7 gigahertz and this should be achieved in single core or lightly threaded workloads in the center bench single core test for example the 5800x typically operated at 4.85 gigahertz so that's 150 megahertz over the advertised spec the 7-zip compression performance is also very impressive here the 5800x even managed to edge out the 10-900k as it was 24 faster than the 3700x and 22 faster than the 10700k so in other words the 5800x is now the fastest eight core desktop cpu by a country mile decompression performance is also very impressive though the margins do shrink a little at least over the 3700 x as the 5800x is now 19 faster that said it's also now 31 faster than the 100k so a bit of a brutal 8 core smack down there aes performance has improved by 12 over the 3700 x and that made the 5800x a whopping 54 faster than the intel core i7 10 700k we're looking at a 16 performance uplift over the 3700x in blender making the 5800x 12 faster than the 10700k it was also just 16 slower than the 10 900k and 31 slower than the 5900x which makes sense given at pax 33 percent fewer cause we saw previously with the 5950x and 5900x that the gains for zen 3 over zen 2 in the v-ray benchmark are quite extreme and here we're seeing that once again the 5800x which was 30 faster than 3700x is not a great deal slower than the 10-900k performance gains in the corona benchmark have also been strong and here we're seeing a 26 performance uplift for the 5800x over the 3700 x then when compared to the intel competition we're talking about an 11 boost over the 10-700 k code compilation performance gains aren't quite as extreme though a 12 performance uplift is certainly nothing to sneeze at and it means amd is now 15 ahead when comparing the 5800x and 10700 k next up we have davinci resolve studio 16 as seen previously the cpu doesn't have a huge impact on performance here but we're still looking at a six percent increase for the 5800x over the 3700x which historically would be considered a very strong generational leap it's a similar story in premiere pro though here the 5800x is more impressive beating the 3700x and 10 700k by a 14 margin while it was just two percent slower than the 10900k as we found previously photoshop relies heavily on single core performance and with zen 3's massive improvement here the 5800x is 27 faster than the 3700x moreover because the 5800x 5900x and 5950x all feature very similar single core performance they deliver comparable results in this benchmark after effects is another program that relies heavily on single core performance and as a result the 5800x is able to beat the 3700x by an impressive 23 margin it was also 12 faster than intel's best mainstream desktop cpu and 26 faster than the 10700 k okay so here's a look at power consumption the 5800x does use around 20 watts more than the 3700x though that's not entirely surprising as the 3700x is in a bit of a sweet spot when it comes to efficiency the 3800x for example consumed around 20 watts more which would have made the 5800x and 3800x fairly even in terms of power usage it's also well worth noting the 5800x was 16 faster than the 3700x in this test so a 13 increase in total system usage is still very good in terms of efficiency it's also 30 watts less than the 10 700 k now time for the gaming benchmarks and again please note i've used a geforce rtx 3090 for all the game testing starting with far cry noodle we find that in this latency sensitive title the 5800x is actually a whisker faster than the 5900x and 5950x basically it matched the 10700k making it just 3 slower than the 10 900 k that's an 18 performance uplift from the 3700 x which can be seen trailing even the core i5 10 400 at least when comparing average frame rate performance performance in tom clancy's rainbow six siege is also strong though this time the 5800x is matching the more expensive zen three processors with 508 fps on average that made it two percent faster than the 10 700k and 19 faster than the 3700x so another big generational performance leap there we're also looking at a 16 performance uplift in watchdogs legion going from 99 fps to 155 fps again the 5800x was able to match the higher end 12 and 16 core models and that meant that it also matched the 10 700k and 10 900k the 5800x was also blazing fast in f1 2020 beating its predecessor by a 20 margin and even edging out the 10-700k by 5 basically it matched the 5900x and 5950x to come out just three percent behind the 10 900k as seen previously with the 5900x and 5950x zen3 offers very strong performance in horizon zero dawn and the 5800x drops just a few frames when compared to those higher end models and that meant it was three percent faster than the 10-700k so in other words it matched the core i7's level of performance and this was possible due to an 18 performance boost over the 3700x the gain seen in borderlands 3 are less impressive here the 5800x was just 7 faster than 3700x and unfortunately that meant it was a little slower than the competing intel parts though having said that it was just 4 slower than the 10 700k and i generally deem anything within a five percent margin to be a tie where we don't see a tyre is in death stranding here the 5800 x was 12 faster than the 10 700 k and you'd be hard-pressed to make that margin up by overclocking the core i7 part the 5800x was also 33 faster than the 3700x which is incredible to see though having now looked at the 5900x and 5950x i'm starting to get used to seeing margins like this the 5800x managed to match the 10900k and shut off the tomb raider with 165 fps on average and that made it 28 faster than the 3700x and 9 faster than the 10700k while it was just 4 percent slower than the higher end zen 3 based models interestingly the 5800x isn't quite as impressive as the 5900x and 5950x in hitman 2 pushing the rtx 3090 to 151 fps at 1080p and that placed it on par with the 10900k certainly not a bad result but i also wasn't expecting it to be seven percent slower than the 5900x here we see it performed very well in star wars squadrons basically matching the higher core count parts to match the 10 900k and beat the 10 700k by 8 margin we're also looking at a seriously big 27 performance uplift over the 3700 x and last up we have sirius sam4 and again the 5800x was seen matching the 5900x and 5950x with performance that placed at 11 ahead of the 10900k and a whopping 27 ahead of the 10 700k moreover we're talking about an insane 51 performance increase over the 3700x now if we average the performance scene across the 11 game sample we find that the 5800x is roughly on par with the 10900k and for the most part isn't much slower than the 5900x and 5950x it also came at six percent ahead of the core i7 10 700k and 23 ahead of the older 3700x seriously impressive stuff and it means the 5800x is now one of the best gaming cpus on the market now let's take a look at overclocking performance i was able to hit an all core of 4.7 gigahertz with my 5800x using 1.375 volts so the same frequency achieved by the 5950x in the case of the 5800x though this only boosted multi-core performance by 5 as the all-core frequency was increased from 4.5 gigahertz to 4.7 gigahertz unfortunately this overclock does reduce single core performance as we're now operating 150 megahertz slower and as a result the cinebench r20 performance dropped by 3 we're also only seeing a 4 performance uplift in blender so it hardly seems worth the trouble especially given the decline in single thread performance the upshot being that we're only looking at a three percent increase in power consumption so that won't really affect thermals the hit to gaming performance isn't huge as we saw in the single core cinebench r20 test you're looking at low single digit percentage drops in rainbow six siege we're talking about a four percent performance loss and then performance in far cry new dawn that goes unaffected we're looking at the same 132 fps on average still although we didn't see a performance decline here it seems quite clear that overclocking is pointless for this part here's a quick comparison between the ryzen 7 3800x and 5800x both have been tested in a 21 degree room using the corsair iq h150i elite catalytics aio on the msi x570 godlike installed inside the corsair obsidian 500d here we're seeing the 5800x ran three to five degrees hotter than the 3800x which is quite impressive given that it is clocking just over 400 megahertz higher at a similar voltage so some serious optimization work going on there unfortunately the massive price hike does mean the 5800x is worse value than the previous generation eight core parts such as the 3700x here you're paying a 12 price premium though that does place it on par with the 10700k despite being much worse than the 5900x it's also a similar story in premiere pro the 3700x is much better value here and the 5800x is even edged out by the 10700k at this price point you're actually better off with the ryzen 9 3900x then for gaming the 5800x comes out costing slightly more per frame than the 3700x despite the massive 28 performance uplift and it also loses out to the core i7 10 700k in terms of value though it does make out better than the 5900x as most games can't utilize those extra cores now looking at the value equation across all the games tested it's clear that while faster zen 3 isn't as good as zen 2 in terms of value the 5800x is again edged out by the 3700x and even the intel 10700k represents as a better value option at the more affordable 380 us asking price based on what we'd already seen from the ryzen 9 parts and what we already knew about the pricing for the entire ryzen 5000 lineup it's not surprising to learn that the ryzen 75800x is a bit disappointing in my opinion amd has unwisely afforded intel some breathing room here as the 5800x isn't the obvious choice for those of you looking to spend up to 450 us for gamers the much cheaper core i7 10700k just offers more value yes it is a little slower overall but at 380 u.s it's just a better value deal and frankly you're almost almost never going to spot the difference when gaming the only weakness is the lack of pcie 4.0 support and while that could become a big deal down the track it's hard to say exactly when both processors do have 8 cores with 16 threads so in that regard they should age pretty much the same and that means spending almost 20 more for pcie 4.0 which might end up being useful within the lifespan of the product makes the 5800x a bit of a tough sell amd's really putting buyers in a situation where those looking to spend around 400 are best of saving a few bucks and going with intel or alternatively they need to dig deep and come up with another 100 or so to land the ryzen 9 5900x spending 450 on the 5800x just doesn't seem like a good idea in my opinion it should cost no more than four hundred dollars us it's the same old story for productivity as well the ryzen 9 5900x just offers a lot more bang for your buck while the 10700k is fairly similar in terms of value compare that to the matchup just seen with the 5900x and 10900k and it's hard not to walk away disappointed with the 8 core model the 5900x dominated the 10900k at everything it delivered better performance across the board substantially better efficiency and just a better feature set and i did all of this at the same price pricing aside though the ryzen 7 500 x is a phenomenal leap forward from amd's previous generation of eight core processors a 23 gaming performance uplift on average is quite incredible and as i said earlier amd now offers the world's fastest eight core desktop cpu it's just a shame that it didn't retain last gen pricing anyway there's not much more to say on this one at 450 us i recommend skipping the 5800x either spend less on the 10700k or maybe get the 5600x which is cheaper again and we'll be looking at that part tomorrow or you could spend more to get the 5900x or i guess alternatively you could also keep your eye open for a good deal on a third gen ryzen part so there are plenty of alternatives
