anabaptists and Mennonite Church like baptism by choice pacifism non-confirmation to the world and valuing Community fellowship and family but the Amish are a separate community the Amish Christians separated themselves from the Swiss and Alsatian anabaptist Church in 1693. the Schism was led by Jacob Ammon so the new group was called Amish Amish people migrated to religiously tolerant Pennsylvania USA during the 18th century they were escaping from the religious wars religious intolerance poverty Etc that ravaged Europe many of them settled in Lancaster County and Pennsylvania some Order Amish and old beachy Amish speak Pennsylvania German according to a census in 2000 about 165 000 old order Amish live in America and 1500 live in Canada another census taken in 2018 says that the Amish owns almost 12 000 dairy farms among a total forty thousand of them in America simple living plain dress and a reluctance to accept modern facilities and Technology are some of the Striking characteristics of the Amish people they value hard work and doing all things with love their life is governed by an Unwritten code of behavior called the ordna the Amish have decades old traditions approaches to their religion and culture a few allow some liberties respecting family loving one another working hard and honoring the Bible are the core values shared by all communities each Amish community is a self-governing body the core Amish value is a simple and humble life based on Christian faith they believe that their religious faith and their life are interdependent God and community small gathering in a member house they attend the church every Sunday the service helps them to renew their faith and affirm the community an Amish enters the church membership by going through the rite of baptism at the age between 16 to 23. baptism and church membership are compulsory preconditions for solemnizing a marriage by the Amish Church a baptized believer who has become a member of the church should marry only from the Amish Christian Society baptized members should adhere strictly to all the church rules they should constrain the use of power line electricity telephone automobile Etc Amish people never serve in any kind of military service they give importance to Rural Life hard labor and humility for them their everyday life is a spiritual activity they are honest practices in the Amish educational system emphasize cooperation individual advancement and Independence they discourage competition they do not encourage their children to get ahead of the other students they do not go for higher education fearing that it would cause divisions and discrimination in the society formal education at schools is completed by eighth grade after that they are trained in different skills to an age of 16 by their parents society and teachers this informal education prepares them for the Adult World in the Amish community they may choose agriculture craftsmanship with hands or apprenticeships this system has helped the Amish community to pass on valuable traditional skills to the younger Generations [Music] thank you foreign hesitate to incorporate modern Technologies into their communities they are afraid that worldliness would distract them from being close to God so they do not use automobiles or electric power in their community they use other modes of transportation and use generators and propane to power lights each Community carefully evaluates the technology and other changes in the outside world decision to use or reject any technology is taken by Church districts within Amish communities the question they consider in the matter is does this add to or detract from their beliefs on love family humility and hard work some communities have permitted the use of certain Technologies in business to connect to the outside world so they use work only phones hire drivers to do business with people outside and hire technicians to manage their website and online presence some Amish who work in a non-amish office environment use a computer and internet access they convert electric equipment and appliances to pneumatic or hydraulic power to perform their day-to-day operations solar panels or diesel-powered machines are also used before these Technologies they used windmills or water wheels to generate helps them to live separated from the world and ensure salvation they support others freely giving their time and skills they stand together in times of difficulty disaster or loss family is the heart of the community they spend quality time with their family to build up and sustain their relationship there may be 7 to 10 children in a family children help at Market stands picking corn or tending animals by their participation in small tasks children learn strong work ethics farming is the main occupation in Amish communities but some people are choosing trades in business in recent years the reasons for the change are the increase in land price and growth in population the younger generation seems to have a lack of interest in agriculture they are using their skills as Builders roofers the Amish value humility and appreciates small-scale communities so they restrict large businesses their business does not grow beyond the size of 30 employees if it grows beyond the self-restricted limit the owner might sell part or the whole company Amish people consider art that merely provides aesthetic pleasure without any functional value as wasteful their life is not all a joyless Monday routine after their daily work they find time to relax and enjoy some leisure activities around their home or on the farm with their families or Neighbors foreign foreign [Music] one of the popular Hobbies among Amish females is Quilting they have quilting circles consisting of 20 to 30 women their quilts are beautiful works of art quilts have a functional value beyond their artistic Beauty so it is permitted as a channel for creativity quilts bring in additional income to the family they are sold or presented as gifts for weddings and births they used to preserve food and glass jars for times between harvestings this is known as canning leisure activities include indoor games and Outdoor Sports but there is no gambling and competition they love fishing hunting and bird watching Amish children have fun together with their siblings or children from an adjacent family such as fishing non-competitive Sports riding scooters climbing trees Etc foreign [Music] foreign [Music] Amish people used to visit relatives neighbors church friends and non-amish Friends long letters are written to communicate with members of other communities they contain family updates farming advice cooking recipes Etc during summer months Amish people including children wake up as early at 4am children go to their morning chores such as milking the cows feeding the livestock Gathering eggs and cleaning up the animal pens children are given chores starting at the age of four or five Amish boys work alongside their fathers doing outside chores while girls stay inside helping their mother after the morning chores Amish families eat breakfast together and take some time to pray and read the Bible afterwards they go to work most Amish families go to bed during summer by 8 30 to 9 pm The Farm will go to the youngest daughter after passing the farm to the next generation an addition is built to the house for the parents they live there for the rest of their days this Edition often has a different color siding than the rest of the house up to three generations live together and they care for the Aged family members and help rearing the children wisdom from older Amish is valued by the Young a division of labor based on gender is common they believe that God has assigned specific roles to men and women men run the farm take care of animals and do other hard tasks women engage bride moves her personal items to the bridegroom's house an important item of the Bride is a hope chest it is a chest in which an unmarried young woman keeps handmade garments and linens throughout her life in anticipation of her marriage Amish weddings are quite simple embellishments such as flowers jewelry and decorations are absent the ceremony and reception normally attended by 400 guests customarily take place in the bride's home wedding ceremony usually starts at 9am a sermon is preached and hymns are sung by the guests during this time the bride and groom are counseled by a church official this process can last up to three hours reception follows the marriage ceremony it is a time of meeting friends and relatives the whole ceremony finishes around 10 pm the bride and groom
