you in this video we're going to take a quick look at how to repair seamless or continuous aluminium guttering like these although they may be seamless they're not jointless so whenever you have any sort of stop end or outlet or corners like this this or this you have a potential for a leak later on one option is to split a troublesome joint open reseal it and rivet it back together and although that works very well it is what they call in the trade if you called another option is to simply paint on an acrylic paint with the brush but as a long-term solution it's not always very reliable so I'm going to show you a relatively simple solution that has proved to be very long-lasting for me this is the joint we will be repairing and during rain it drips constantly and is starting to rot the wooden fascia and expose rafter the first thing to do is clean out all the dirt and then to expose the original jointing compound which is normally some sorts of silicon sealant when you have a good sized clean area to work in it's time to scrape off any of the old existing compound and over the years I've found the best tool for this is a 3/4 inch chisel that's only about 80% sharp this means it's sharp enough to lift off any sealants but it's not so sharp that it keeps digging into the aluminium every two seconds all I'm basically doing is patiently scraping the mastic from every face trying to get down to the aluminium underneath this means that when we put our repair on in a moment it will sit as flat as possible allowing the water to flow over the repair in a way we're not looking to build any ramps or dams take a break every so often and clean out any old scrapings or dirt that's fouling your work then start scraping again when you're happy with the finish you can clean the surface of the aluminium guttering this removes any build-up of surface algae that will act as a barrier between your new repair and the guttering itself here I'm using trade wipes that if you don't have these a damp lightly soaked cloth will work just as well and if you spot any stubborn or thick algae don't be afraid to go back in with a chisel once more and then give it another white clean light buff after your efforts you should be rewarded with something that looks a bit like this it may not be perfect but it's good enough now take some of this self-adhesive plasterers scrim otherwise known as dry lining tape and we're going to cut some 3/2 forming sections to line the bottom and rear of our leaking gutter joint before we do though I'm going to apply my gutter sealant to everywhere the scrim will be seated shortly and that will mean over the existing repair and onto the clean aluminium as well including the rear of the gutter and if you want to buy the scrim or the gutter sealant you can find international purchasing links in the description bar below with that complete you can start pressing the scrim into the gutter sealant what we're looking to achieve is to press the scrim as far down as possible so the sealant Rises through the scrim allowing you to work the sealant back into all the holes the purpose of the screen isn't add strength at all what it does is to guarantee a minimum even coverage debt of 1 millimeter and that's because whenever you apply any sort of liquid sealant to a roof or got off the number one cause of premature failure is uneven depth so what this does basically it gives us a guarantee one millimeter minimum even though we're going to aim for approximately 2 to 3 millimeters of coverage the outer corner because of its shape will unfortunately resist scrim due to the sharp angle but you should find this relatively easy to seal because of its concave shape as a final stage I'm going to tall the surface of the sealer with my finger and I'll spare you the visuals but the best method I've found is to spit on the end of your finger and apply it this stops the sealant becoming stuck to your skin as long as you work with small areas at a time if any does stick to your finger wipe it off with some tissue apply more spit and start again there we go done time for water test try not to blast the repair directly as I've just done and the repair should even at this early stage the 100% waterproof and last for many years unfortunately as you can see thanks to poor fitting this got to hold a permanent one to one and a half inches of water but if we take a look underneath the guttering now it's 100% dry and drip through well that brings this video to a close but if you want to see other methods have got to repair for cast iron plastic and concrete along with approximate costs for a professional repair why not visit the website links provided in the iCard on screen and in the description bar well I hope this video to prove useful thanks for watching
