ALMOST CANCELED! - Bassmaster Elite Neely Henry Days 1&2 - UFB Ep.30 (4K)

over 50 years ago my dad began his career on the bassmasters tour and that's where this story begins 19 tournament wins nine angler of the years but the one that eluded him the bassmasters classic in 2020 i fished a bassmaster open drill with one simple goal to qualify for the elites it was a hard-fought battle many ups many downs it came down to the last tournament came down to the last cast now that i've made the bassmaster elite series the goals are simple to win a bassmaster elite event and get one of the blue trophies [Music] fighting claw to win an angler of the year title and the ultimate goal to win the bassmasters classic trophy a title that eluded my father for over 50 years i want to bring that home and finish the legacy this is unfinished family business [Music] [Music] literally 3 20 in the morning good morning everybody well like i said it's 3 3 20 in the morning and uh you're wondering what the heck am i doing up at 3 20 in the morning well we are getting ready for day one of the bassmaster elite event stop number five here on uh neely henry lake in alabama we are in the bass cave right now that's right we're scott canterbury's in odinsville alabama that's what we're doing and we're going to get up we're going to drive to gadsden alabama we're going to start this whole thing so guys if you watch the first couple videos in the series travel video and the practice video then you're well aware of what we're facing in this event this this event here we've had some crazy weather okay crazy we've had all year right but we we had again crazy weather we've had ridiculous conditions uh it flooded up the river and they had to open the floodgates on the lake and it's dropped the water down the lower end like four or five feet it's crazy like it doesn't even make sense it's kind of the twilight zone but we are awaiting a phone call or a text message from bassmaster to let us know if we're gonna actually fish today there's a small chance that we're gonna postpone day one because of the flooding up the river where the boat ramp is where we're launching from so i'm not sure we're even able to get out there today but we've got to be ready it's about a 30 45 minute drive and we're blasting off at 5 40 in the morning let's see who's up oh there you go good morning good morning let's look at this big beautiful ball of sunshine right here well there you go what's up dude what's up well i kind of let everybody know what the deal was where's there is everybody going to get up hey dude we gone we gotta go dude we'll see you i don't know what you're doing yeah it's only 325. damn my alarm didn't go off all right we'll see you down at the ramp dude see man i'm glad we checked on this yeah you're in love with the teddy sometimes there's only one good thing about going ahead and getting it over with today as we get home with early oh yeah i'm not gonna disagree with that can you can you go back to sleep right now yeah yeah yeah i had my alarm set for 10 after three and i woke up and it was three o'clock oh i just went back to school at 3 40 in the morning it did jay got all what i've done took a shower why didn't i get that means i gotta go because you're not important i'm trying to tell you that i've been trying to tell you that you'll get yours rookies you have to you're postponing rookies rookies get correct rookies oh here we go here we go message from bass due to the high water on day one has not been postponed for you on friday may 7th please meet at the ramp you and six other people will go out for a small fishing tournament by yourselves while we all sleep what the heck man i'm going back to sleep i don't know what let's go to the lake look for a shad spawn absolutely from the bank we can go to the bank absolutely not you want to go with me yeah grab some of that grab something like red diamond coffee send me something thank you a big old pot of red diamond and we're going to go sit on the bank with binoculars and look for shad sponsors give us some dots well we kind of thought that may happen they're going to extend the tournament so the tournament will end on a monday instead of a sunday and uh there's a small chance that it may get canceled tomorrow because the water may not come down let's see if mccoy's already asleep oh yeah he's already asleep that quick all right so we will we will there um it's gonna be a little bit of a process this morning i think at the boat ramp and especially this afternoon for for weigh-in but you know we i think it's a good thing that we waited one day for the fish mostly because i think it gave it one day for the lake to kind of stay where it was and allow those fish to kind of kind of set up right get used to what's going on you know for me uh i'm not catching a lot of fish right now but that all could change i mean look i'm going to fish the lower end of the lake there's not a lot of cover in the water if these fish have set up on some of the little bit that's in these creeks you know it could be it could be pretty fun actually you know i think i think this is one of those things where you could see a pattern you know you could start to see that these fish are on point so they're in the back of the pockets on the last piece of cover you know i'll have to figure that out it's gonna be a little bit like pickwick where you kind of start the day off and you really don't know what to expect i'm gonna try to get on that point down by the dam see if i can get on that if i can get on it and there's a few fish there you know we could start off the morning with a with a few fish which would be nice it'd be really nice to start off with the limit but that's the deal that's the deal guys day one of the bassmaster elite neil henry yeah it's of thursday we got postponed high water they got it back down it's looking pretty good uh it's almost you got to go practice again a little bit but you know we got to try to figure it out pretty quick today once again we've been throwing a curveball by mother nature uh the water's come up it's weird because half the lake came up four feet the other half dropped four feet the first lake i've ever seen that does that in the whole country and i think it needs to be addressed because it's really bad for the fish population especially when the spawn is going on but um lake has come back down up here some it's probably come back up some on the lower end we're gonna have to make a lot of adjustments on the fly uh it's gonna be an interesting tournament uh we go out there and the goal is just to catch five hopefully we can catch five we're getting ready to blast this thing off there's all the current out here guys this is uh so it's an interesting thing happening i don't know if you watch the practice video you got to see a very unique situation so we had all this rain come in and that's the whole reason they postponed they won because this river flooded so right here behind us all this was underwater uh i think even yesterday morning and that's why they postponed but interesting thing happened so they got several i mean i think eight or nine inches of rain in this whole system north of here it filled this part of the river flooded it up high because of all the flow like you can see but down the lake there's a bottleneck down about mid lake where the water can't flow any faster than what it's flowing right here but when they open the spillway at the dam which they did it can go through the spillway faster than it can get through here which dropped the water on the lower end four feet like literally you're gonna see when we're down there today like it's mud banks like the grass that was in the water that was getting bit on in practice it's three or four feet up on the on the bank the docks are basically barely in the water it's hard to get around so it's a strange situation going on down so it's super low there super high here in the middle part of the lake it's kind of normal but the fish aren't biting very good there so we're going to go down on that lower end the water is a little bit lower again you know a little bit of cover that's in the lake that's what we're gonna do we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna focus on it so let's get this thing going guys it's kind of like pickwick i don't really know what to expect so just thanks for hanging out and start praying i catch them guys [Music] is [Music] do all right guys there was three people well two of the guys on this point this guy was fishing the back side of it you'll hear me talking to my camera today you'll hear me talking to my chesty so don't think i'm that i crazy we're gonna make a move here in a second go ahead and throw your lightness down oh maybe not hang on it's a little one i think i don't know what i got maybe maybe well how about that boys we're on the board oh yeah all right well we got one this looks good right here i think i can catch a couple right here hey it's a good spot b the wind's blowing in on it see the currents hitting it it should be a big in right here feels like a better fish here oh yeah better fish yes that's a good one there that's what's here that's what i was hoping to catch here all right that helps cause a lot thank you lord well had him look good he wouldn't have got off in two weeks all right look at that it's a good fish okay thank you board just need four more like that one spot and then we're doing what we need to do then we can go largemouth fishing but i don't i don't think him or fishing out wide like there's there is a point there's one there's a point that goes out there and i hadn't seen them fish that see what you got to do is you got to threaten them if you threaten them it's automatic you can the the rotation of things to do when you're not getting bit is you change colors change colors you then um change baits and if that anymore then you threaten to leave if you threaten to leave and it's like automatic you're gonna catch one twice in a row i know it works the threat to catch one trick god dang you gotta be freaking kidding me freaking hook was all twisted god darn it the trailer hook was spun around and was hooked on the other hook and he was hitting it and grabbing it mouthing it and i was like what the heck is going on i was running into something trailer hook's supposed to get you extra fish in the boat yeah not freaking lose them that was a that was a missed opportunity right there i don't know how big the fish was but he was hit you know he hit it like three i was like what am i hitting then it grabbed it and swam over here like and i was like what the heck is going on it was like that it was creating a weedless like that so he's biting it going yep slipping right off yeah all right that's coming off dude i can't do that i cannot do that there it is we'll see but i'm liking the fact that i'm getting a few bites even though these are just small we'll touches him i'll put him on this other side i mean he's barely barely a keeper foreign they're not even hitting this thing dude they're like slapping it i might have to put my trailer hook back on like that one was in the chin i've had a bite of some sort on just about every dock oh nice okay all right that was that helped even that one didn't get it good see what i mean like like it's crazy so we've got two maybe two pounder yeah two pounder that helps hate it so okay so so yeah i just lost it so yes tank tank absolute tank got me a good one now [Music] that's a good one so man i've never quite seen one this yet it's locked on but difficult thank you lord that was cool guys [Music] all right so update is uh update is i have five i've caught six keepers i had that real like borderline probably wasn't gonna measure fish i just got rid of so that's good and i haven't caught any good ones i did catch a two pounder back there sight fishing which was kind of crazy i was either guarding fry or bedding or something it was crazy acting dude i've caught half the fish i've caught today have not even had the hook in their mouth like just on the outside of their chin yeah it's just a weird deal man all conditions so very happy to have what i had i did have two one-eighths in that bag and i had two more big ones on and lost both of them so that's just part of it but uh you know hopefully we can get down i think my biggest fish is two pounds roughly so you know i just didn't get any of those quality bites i'm gonna just go out and do kind of the same thing probably fish different areas of the lake and uh this is these are kind of fun tournaments where you just kind of start over like pickwick you know you don't really really know what's going to happen until you get out there you you just start reading the water and fishing the conditions and you know just making it up as you go and that actually is a lot of fun but you know we're just going to go out tomorrow hopefully catch five better fish tomorrow make the cut it'd be awesome good job today you're inside that top 40. i want to say hi to my wife i know she's uh she's online watching right now and my girls and my kids and all they're catching some pretty good bags i mean matt had 15 something he's in the top four five uh i haven't heard heard canterbury had some difficulties so i don't know the full story on that yet but we're gonna find out you know i had eight pounds ten ounces at the end of the day i gotta go out tomorrow and i gotta catch a better bag than that a lot better back than that i need to make the top 50. that's my main goal make the top top 50 try to get close up to that top 10 and put myself in position to fish on the final day here you know it's it's a junk fishing deal it's all about instinct it's all about fishing what looks good i like that i like that a lot i just now like tomorrow i'm gonna be in a better rhythm today i was questioned i was questioning what i should be doing i wasn't sure what was good what wasn't good i kind of know now i kind of just i'm gonna settle in tomorrow i'm gonna grind it out but let's go let's go check in with everybody so we'll see what's up that's changed for the good the sun came out day and we hadn't seen that much all week and i do think that had something to do with positioning the fish a little bit better all right so we're back at the house now uh area is in fourth place actually 15 something and uh canberra had had a had a rough day man he um i don't know he's just got to go catch him tomorrow that's all and look if anybody can catch a big old bag he can do it for sure we got canterbury's family and friends over here tonight we're doing a little cookout got the traeger going and uh let's mess around a little bit just enjoying a little little down time let's check out what they got on the grill oh look at this start to look good i'll never cook one on traeger but we're trying we're learning oh yeah that's good one of my deer on a trailer that's all we cook on on the road i carry that my truck oh yeah you've done good he's got some jalapenos in there some of them got jalapenos some of them don't yeah cream cheese there's one inner loin that i forgot cream cheese on but the rest of us got cream we got a cameraman and and you're going to catch 15 tomorrow i'm going to catch 16 tomorrow and canberra is going to catch 21. and i'll make it good he don't he could make top 50 with like 16. yeah what's the cut 8 15. it's like a run out of fish after about two and a half days it does get thin i don't think there's many out there if you go back over the same stuff it's not smart not really to me this is the this is the best part of the day back straps are good banana peppers me kyle over there done you gone yep all right good job dude good job good job hey you don't need but 16. yeah uh i think nine i think 18 and a half 19. so you get one fish no yeah he needs one four five i need i just need to catch five and then hopefully get lucky and stumble across a couple big ones again yeah i say 18 and a half makes it yeah so i need 10. i need 15. all right we all got our goals here today all right guys what do we got to do today we got to catch them you know here's the deal yesterday i was on the right pattern right but i wasn't sure right i fished a little too slow i fished a little too apprehensive i played around with some other things i threw some swim baits a little bit i threw some wacky worms you know i fished offshore on some points you know i did some things that i didn't run enough docks like matt and how he caught him was doing the exact same thing i was doing throwing a square bill and throwing a a vibrating jig on the docks the difference is he had a ton of water and i didn't i hit the docks that were a little too shallow i fished a little too slow so today i just need to get in a good rhythm and just cover a bunch of water guys that's what i have to do so that's the goal for today uh let's make the top 50. we need to move up a lot you know i need 13 14 15 pounds if i get 18 i think i'll be real close to the top 10 but um you know it's a fun event even though it's tough you know you're going to hear us a lot of like yeah you know this is tough this is tough but it's fun you know it's it's it's it's a new situation we had the day off you know because of the hot water we had the storms come in like all that stuff just changed everything so we're still kind of that learning process but today we're gonna get it done guys so let's pray hard let's fish hard all right y'all day two here at neely henry we started off really good yesterday with uh i think we had 15 four sitting in fourth place um we need to do it again that's all there is to it i mean we can we can go out there and catch five or six pounds and make the cut but you know the opportunity to get in position to win one of these things doesn't come around often it's day one of a four-day derby i would love to catch enough today just to stay in contention some lines here because the water's come up down the lower end just a little bit so if i want my bait to be in the strike zone then i need my bait to get a little deeper and i'm going 15. let's get it down just a little bit deeper all right guys so getting ready to blast this thing off i'm gonna run up the river just a little bit to a couple of these little sloughs just north of here and uh and just start off the morning there you know i started on that point down by the dam and the water came up yesterday and the water got muddy and and those fish weren't good anyways they were small little spots and those aren't going to do any good so today is all about largemouth and let's go have some fun so thank you so much for literally missed it dude dang it he literally came out with whoosh it's crazy how a fish will strike and won't hit it again this goes to prove sometimes they don't bite because they're hungry they bite out a reaction because if they were hungry they would eat again well accurate casts are super important it's an element of surprise there he is i like it i like it i like it i like it it's fun catch them on spinner bait boys oh my gosh dude seriously seriously that was a good one dude there it is what is that catfish tear up my spinner bait dude i think i can get a limit here dude i think i can now i don't know what that was i didn't see that one i don't i don't know what to do i mean i got a trailer hook like they're not even touching it dude they're missing it you saw right there was 100 a thousand what like no i'm looking at their eyeballs like that's how good i'm seeing them dude i just don't know what to do i'm gonna put this uh trailer on maybe they're just not seeing it good enough or something dude there he is whoa yeah okay we're cooking man we're catching put this one on the that's the cut side that side's the cut side this side is going home without a check side keep cranking boys cranky the crank boy you know these fish that live here in this grass you can't catch them after a certain time i wonder what they do do they just go out here and lay on the bottom doesn't make any sense bar okay good i gotta go fishing now well i know i got three better fishing i had yesterday morning this time how neely henry's supposed to be right here that's how neely henry's supposed to be let's get it done today oh real measure number five machine shop good one wow i said good one a keeper's a good one right now well maybe we don't have to have wind number one it's little but it is number one hey that one's fat i'm gonna measure that one just to make sure i'm sure all these are 12 inches hey he's 13 and a half baby let's just get us five real quick on canterbury my roommate he told me about that old color of this shaky head worm he said they'd love that color on this lake feels like a better one there it is spot old spotted old spotted dog came to the party catching them giants will get you get you to sweating real quick number five oh yeah he's a giant he's at least one six well that's i mean them spots they fight so much harder you think they're i still want to move the boat back because i'm getting bit like right here now and i'm afraid i'm pulling the group towards me but i'm scared to move oh that's a that looked like a pretty good bull right there didn't it yeah nice spot good spot i think i said green was the smallest well it must have been white [Applause] all right we'll put him in the big side for now oh it's a good one i think it'd last much longer but i do apologize for that one that's what we're talking about right there that's what we needed that's a pretty good call right there i'd say that's a good call now we weight tests it's the strongest fluorocarbon out there on the market and y'all saw it firsthand right there okay that helps caught three but i had three legit likes watch them come up and never touch the spinner bait dude like the weirdest thing ever and three do that like like close to like whoosh i'm like oh my like nothing the slow motion got any good ones no i got two and a half and then the other ones are just like a pound and a half [Music] i think he's 12. i think oh yeah all right [Music] the limit just a small one guys that's five one pound one pounder that's a taco bass is what that is that's a taco bass i've lost way too many fish today and and i can't even count those spinnerbait fish is like and hook them the spinner bait fish they just come up and roll on it craziest thing to see my life i don't know we have about a little over an hour to make about two calls let's go get it done [Music] there he is yes oh god i needed that two pounder we did that on this side pretty sure it's that one right there one more i'll probably make the cut get one more fish one more two two and a half two pounder whatever all right guys so i don't know it's gonna be close i'm probably not gonna make it but i'll tell you that last fish helped me a ton it's one thing to have uh no opportunity but we had the opportunity to have a good bag today i had that one on a crank bait that i lost had one hooked on a spinner bait that came off and then having those other ones swipe at it i don't know if i've ever quite seen that happen like that that was really crazy but oh guys this one hurts [Music] number one he's from north carolina come on out matt airy watch you on live all morning on fs1 you were catching them almost every cast at one point it was exciting 15-4 yesterday five more today where 10 pounds at seven hours is going to take matt to 25-11 it has you at fifth place so you are still inside that top ten slow for a little while but then you uh jumped into flurry real quick like yeah slow for a little while was an understatement we had a six or eight short bikes this morning on the bladed jig and i picked up the square bill and i couldn't really get big good on it and there was zero win today and obviously the wind blew pretty good yesterday and i know some guys probably caught them on moving baits today but i ended up picking up a little uh little spinning rod and just a little jig head worm and caught a bunch of fish just didn't get any you know good quality bites up that one so um but went through a lot of keepers i'm surprised i didn't run into another two and a half three pounder along the way but um tomorrow maybe we'll get some wind maybe we'll get some weather i heard it's supposed to rain or something maybe we gotta look is that right you know i haven't even looked at it but it would not surprise me not that we haven't seen enough rain this year but hey i'm kind of wishing for some clouds and some wind myself to see what happens but we'll go out there again tomorrow and try to wrangle up 13 14 pounds get back in this thing good job you're inside the top 10 still and we'll see if you can hang on to it all right they too just uh we just weighed in on day two they're still half the field left away but we had 10 7 i think which puts us around the 25 pound mark i believe so uh we've got some work to do to get back in this thing i think the leaders probably won't have around 30 pounds we get to go fishing tomorrow which is a good thing but we're going to need some of those big three three and a half pound bites you know those three and a half four pounders right here are gold right now so hopefully we can uh we can come up with a few big bites tomorrow get back in this thing eight pounds to ten ounces for this clewiston florida angler former harsh wood cup champion come on out scott martin all right scott eight pounds and ten ounces again on your day number one you got five in there today looks like you did a little bit better than your day one weight let's see how much five fish worth nine pounds in five hours is gonna take you a 17-15 two-day total and it's got you in 25th place right now so you are inside that top 48. this is what you call sweating it you know i got to sit out here and watch the standings for the next hour or so but you know it was it was a it was a fun tournament you know everybody kept talking about neely henry and kind of didn't really know what to expect and especially with the floods i think everybody's having a ball here the crowd's awesome the fishing's actually really good i just missed some fish today or we would have a bit you know be sitting pretty good right now but hey i hope i can squeeze squeak in there at the very least it's good points for the bassmasters classic and i'm gonna hang out with you guys so if you guys uh want to hang out a little bit i'm gonna probably go over to the yamaha booth i've got some hats and stuff over there as well so thanks for all the support guys appreciate you all right guys a little bit more than i thought nine five thought i had about eight and a half so that helps you know it's it's uh it's gonna be really tight guys so you know it's gonna be what it's gonna be i'm gonna be like either the last man in or the first man out i mean that's just where it's gonna end up settling i think but you know what if we get a chance to go tomorrow i'm gonna have a lot of fun tomorrow man we're gonna have a lot of fun we're just gonna we're gonna just we're gonna let it all hang out tomorrow that's a fact so let's keep our fingers was off six minutes and i came in a minute and a half early on my gps but i was five minutes late so that's a five minute penalty there but uh you know i was excited about this one just i mean this is a great lake the koosa river i mean i live here but you know i mean i've got the greatest sponsors in the industry but i've got a lot of you know really good sponsors out of the industry i picked up some new sponsors this year i got a lot of local sponsors and uh you know i mean just plumb one i mean and i got plumbers wholesale this year because i used to be a plumber myself and i know all those guys but uh it's been good i got red diamond this year coffee and tea and uh it's been great but uh you know i mean this is an awesome crowd thanks to everybody coming out this won't tell everybo all
