[Applause] among them the nominated for six Grammys this year here are Sheryl Crow John Fogerty and Usher [Music] [Applause] before we present the award for album of the year we're privileged to announce one of this year's Lifetime Achievement honorees in the early 60s Roy Orbison created a series and hit records that were so memorable that today 35 years later most of us wish we could hit some of those notes the simple truth is Roy Orbison had and still has one of the greatest voices in rock music [Applause] and now it's about time to add some new voices to the album of the Year award list so you gotta get ready in album of the year the Grammy goes to the artist and the album producers if other than the artist nominations are the day mommy baby things produce the babyface [Music] fire Paula Cole producer Paula Cole [Music] flaming pie Papa partners Devlin - bye Ok Computer Radiohead [Applause] bailed them and the album of the year is time out of mind [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well I got to mention him Columbia Records Tommy Mottola Donny Einar Donny Anna heard these songs way back when and convinced me to put it out although his favorite songs aren't on it but he put it out anyway Larry Jenkins has been down in the trenches all the way from Italy to England and back again Daniel Lanois who helped produce this mark Howard can't forget that we got a particular type of sound on this record what you don't get every day everybody worked their special hard even the musicians Auggie Myers from San Antonio Jim Dickinson my brother down in Mississippi and Cindy cash dollar Bucky Baxter Tony Gagne Jim Keltner just every old buddy David Kemper everybody worked really hard on this and we didn't know what we haven't we did it but but we did it anyway and I just wanted to say that one time when I was about 16 or 17 years old I went to see Buddy Holly play at no no Duluth National Guard Armory and I was I was three feet away from him and he looked at me and I just have some kind of feeling that he was I don't know how or why but I know he was with us all the time we were making this record in some kind of way you know in Awards of you know the immortal Robert Johnson his stuff we got a busty brains out and we tried to get that across and this man right here he was sort of instrumental helping that out I'm gonna let him say a few words Daniel Lanois thanks Bob when Bob read me the lyrics to this record we were in a hotel room here in New York City and the words were we're hard we're deep we're desperate we're strong and they came from having lived a number of lives which I believe Bob has so that's the record I wanted to make and we need to thank Jeff Rosen for being in the trenches for a long time Jeff Kramer for 10 years mellie Ciccone for being in my trench at mark Howard you get peace of this thank you [Applause] live on CBS
