[Music] this video is sponsored by squarespace what's going on guys vincent here from the creatofnojo.net hope you're all doing well out there today's quick tip video i want to share with you guys how to create these kind of like glitchy artifact elements right within after effects no plugins required it's actually very easy let's go ahead and get started so i have a test comp right here and this is basically a rehash of my glitch text transition tutorial if you haven't seen that tutorial yet links down below in the video description but basically in that tutorial i show you guys how to create this very exact text transition where it kind of scrambles and glitches and goes on to this next text right here and so i won't be covering this again because you can watch it down below um but basically we'll be focusing on how to create these kind of like glitch artifacts that you see right here the magenta blue and kind of green artifacts and it's very easy to do so let's get started here so the first thing i'm going to do is i'm going to create a new solid layer right here and we'll make it comp size and we'll hit okay and we're going to call this our glitch artifact and we'll kind of move it up here and so i'm going to go ahead and apply an effect and we'll apply a noise and we'll apply a fractal noise a very popular and powerful effect and the first thing we'll do is we'll change the noise type from soft linear to block so we get kind of like a blocky noise here we'll turn down the complexity to around like five or so and we're gonna go and go down to the transform uncheck uniform scaling let's go ahead and really increase the width here to a pretty wide glitch and this is going to be the main driver of your glitch so um adjust it to your liking here but i kind of want big long blocky type glitches something like this you can always play around in the future and i'm going to go ahead and tone down the brightness as well and so the areas in white is gonna be where our glitches are gonna occur and the black areas we're gonna make kind of transparent with the shift channel effect here and you can kind of play around with the contrast as well to kind of dial it in but this is gonna be the main driver of our kind of glitch and so right now it doesn't really do anything it doesn't animate and so i'm going to go ahead and type in an expression here for the evolution i'm going to hold down alt or option and click on the stopwatch to apply an expression and what type time asterisk 1000 and this is gonna multiply this property by the current time times one thousand so this thing is always animating pretty rapidly here and this is cool let's go ahead and apply another expression to animate the offset turbulence right here i'm gonna go ahead and type an expression again hold down alt or option on the keyboard and click the stopwatch to apply an expression and here i'm gonna apply an expression that i like to call better wiggle glitch and basically it's an improved wiggle that will actually be a little bit more randomized and to do that we'll type in if random 0 to 100 is less than let's say 25. and we're going to go ahead and type in posterize time we'll say 5 so it'll be kind of choppy and then once i've been wiggle and we'll wiggle five times and we'll wiggle it by let's say 300 and then else and we will do value so this is a basic fl statement and so pretty much every single frame if the random value is is going to be generated from 0 to 100 and if that is less than 25 then we'll go ahead and execute this wiggle code right here and if it's not then it's going to be its normal value so basically this is saying 25 of the time we're going to apply a wiggle expression the other 75 of the time we're just going to be ourself which is the you know default property value here and this is set to 25 percent if we set this to you know 100 then it's pretty much always gonna be a hundred somewhere between zero to 100 and so you're always going to apply this expression right here but um the probability let's just set it to 25 and this is just some arbitrary number right here and this is an arbitrary wiggle as well but it's going to give us a little more wiggle in our offset turbulence it's not going to give you that kind of shaky wobbly like motion sickness vibe it's going to give you a little bit more choppy uh choppy vibe right here and so this is kind of what we're going for here we'll go ahead and copy this expression and we're going to do the same thing apply to brightness so hold down alt or option apply to brightness and you may need to tweak this value a little bit right so for wiggling brightness maybe we don't need to wiggle so much by 300 amount we just want to wiggle it by let's just say you know 150 or so because this is going to be pretty drastic as you can see here so maybe we can even change it to like 50 or so so that way it's gonna wiggle 25 of the time and it's going to wiggle the original value by 50 pixels or so and so as you can see we get these random kind of like glitches and if you want to make it more dramatic we can actually make it 75 and we can either decrease or increase the frequency of the wiggle um this is going to be pretty short anyway so it doesn't really matter too much here so something like this is going to give you kind of look that we're wanting right here so it's a lot of sporadic movement so this is going to be the main driver of our noise so cool we have this kind of like glitchy noise pattern right here um but let's see how do we kind of get this into a glitch form so let's go ahead and apply an effect color correction and apply levels and here we're going to mess around with all the channels right here so i'm gonna go into the red first and i'm gonna go ahead and kind of crank this down this red input white i'm gonna crank it down keep it above zero for sure but kind of keep it maybe kind of low 75 or so increase the red input black by like .5 or one just very very subtle values here and just kind of play around with that so already we get this kind of like red artifact and you can duplicate this and you know make a blue one make a green one and all that jazz um but it gets more interesting when you apply a blue in here and we can actually crank this up to let's just say like 0.4 and decrease this thing and so when you do that you start to introduce some interesting artifacts here so let's just say 500. now you saw that if i go negative you can actually create some pretty cool elements as well especially if you mess around with the blue input you can get some pretty cool elements this way let's just go ahead and keep this around like 0.4 or so so just like that we've introduced kind of a blue and the slider is kind of sensitive so we can tone it down here and kind of keep it around something like this so by doing that we get this really nice cool magenta blue type artifact you can play around this even more to really dial in your look so if you want more blue you can actually go ahead and increase this red to get more of a blue artifact and just play around with the red input black and white and just play around with everything there you can kind of get a pretty interesting look now i haven't been able to get all three colors to show up um so if you want green in here you can create a new layer for that so go back to the rgb here you can play around with the kind of input white to really crush it or decrease it kind of dial in your look that you want there's a lot of things you can do with it but this is essentially how you create this kind of blocky type look right here and so this is cool this is kind of your artifact i think we can actually go in here and maybe even increase the width a little bit more and maybe decrease the height and then tone down the complexity to like four we don't want too much detail 4.5 so something like this so we have kind of like this kind of glitch look right here and you can kind of fine-tune this by actually decreasing the brightness and that will kind of crush the blacks that will give you less glitches and if we increase the brightness it's going to reveal more of the glitch and of course whenever we're changing the properties of the brightness this is actually being influenced by the wiggle as well remember we have a wiggle expression applied to everything under the brightness so you have to accommodate and adjust to that as well so just keep in mind if you set this to like negative 40 right it's not going to be negative 40 all the time it's going to be something else 25 of the time due to the wiggle the cool part is we can actually animate this right so we can actually you know set a keyframe for the brightness and really crank down the brightness you know just leave very little amount of artifacts like let's just say negative 83 and don't forget it's going to be wiggling sometimes as well so you must accommodate for that so we can set it to maybe like negative 90 or so and then whenever we actually want some major glitches for a text transition for example we can crank this up to a you know respectable amount like that we'll move forward here and let's go ahead and just kind of fade this thing out a little bit so we'll go ahead and set the brightness down to a pretty minimal number right here something like this and as you can see it can still wiggle by 75 or so so just kind of keep that in mind so if you play this back we kind of have like this kind of low glitch artifact amount and then when it gets here more or less it kind of ramps up because of our keyframes and then it'll kind of just kind of ramp back down a little bit and you can kind of play this and use this to your advantage to create kind of a text animation right here and so this is kind of what we're going after right here so if we want to apply it we can easily just change the transfer mode from like normal to either screen or add and that will kind of give the look that you're wanting if you kind of want to go for that look or we can go to the effects right here we can go to channel and actually generate a alpha channel so we can go into the shift channels effect right here and we'll take the alpha from the lightness so now our glitch artifact will have an alpha and as you can see we have our artifacts right here we can hit u on the keyboard to show all our keyframes and kind of just line this up into our text animation right here we'll go ahead and increase it just a little bit right here and that kind of adds a randomness to it so we have something like this and if you want we can actually duplicate this one more time and we'll call this glitch artifact green and we can call this good artifact red blue and for here we can go ahead and just kind of randomize this just a little bit maybe let play before maybe let it last a little bit longer maybe change the complexity to like 4.8 and go into the expression hit u on the keyboard maybe change it to like 30 and we're just basically just randomizing things just a little bit here um so things don't look kind of the same and right there and so you know we can keep at that maybe we even change the time to like 900 or so just to add some variation to everything i'm going to sew this layer so we can kind of see it and let's go ahead and go into the levels right here and we can go ahead and just reset everything and let's go ahead and go into the green we'll kind of set this up to like a point six or so and decrease the green white right here and you didn't create something like that that we can go into maybe the blue and maybe increase this to something and decrease that just to kind of create this this fringe right here and then for here we can actually go ahead and maybe decrease the brightness as well we have less green and we can go ahead and unsolo it and so what we have now is a little bit of green a little bit of blue and magenta let me get this really cool effect right here cool artifacts and maybe we can just tone this down as well we don't need too many green glitches just just enough to kind of add some variation to it and just like that you create some pretty cool glitch elements which you can use in all your projects your music videos your title animations your logo reveals all that cool stuff one level you can also do is add a kind of like a displacement map to your text layers individually or to an adjustment layer as a whole which may cause some issues with um breaking up the background but i'm going to show you really quickly kind of what it looks like and this can be really cool to add another dimension so apply an adjustment layer and apply a distort and apply a displacement map and for our map we'll just use let's just say our red and blue artifact set it to effects and mass so we can accommodate for everything and maybe we can just glitch in the horizontal so we can turn the vertical to off and so we're gonna go ahead and maybe use a luminance or something and you can actually distort everything in the horizontal direction based on our glitch artifacts and then we'll just add another dimension to everything right here and so you might need to hit the wrap pixels around you may need to apply the displacement map to the end of your individual text layers if you need to um to really create an interesting look but you guys can see it kind of distorts everything makes it look nice in the original demonstration i added a little bit of grain i added a small little letter boxing right here and then i applied some deep glow but of course you can use whatever glow you want the red giants glow um or build your own glow but basically this kind of adds another dimension to things so just add a nice little glow to everything and it'll create some really cool effects like that play around with it you can actually even apply a tint effect to everything and you know tint the glitch artifacts a different color or add a colorama effect and apply a whole bunch of time displacements and all sorts of cool things this is just a really quick intro to kind of create this kind of like glitch artifacts you can add chromatic aberration check out my free dojo glitch script if you want to create some pretty cool awesome glitch effects to combine it with this kind of artifact
