what's up guys justin here with the sketch essentials dot com back with another sketchup free tutorial for you so in today's video we're going to continue our series on modeling a floor plan inside of sketchup free by talking about how to add doors and windows to our models so let's go ahead and just jump into it all right so what we want to do is we want to talk about how to create doors and windows inside of our models so we're going to talk through a quick easy way to do both of these things so to start off what i want to do is let's start by taking a look at this exterior window right and remember that we have grouped all of our geometry like this that way when we create our windows they're not going to merge with the geometry of our walls which means that making changes in the future is going to be really easy and so what we want to do is we want to start just by roughing out the window frame and so the way that we're going to do that is we'll just draw a rectangle across this face right so just tap the r key to activate the rectangle tool click on this point and then click on this point and so we've done is we've created a face well at the moment what we want to do is we want to offset this so that we have the thickness of a frame in here so i'm just going to tap the f key with this face selected single click i'm going to move my mouse in and then type in a value of 2 and hit the enter key so what that's done is that's given me a 2 inch thick window frame right and for now we're going to delete out this central face and so what we have is we have this rectangle in here that's going to make up the thickness of our frame well we want to push pull this using the push pull tool so just select this face tap the p key and then single click and move your mouse we're going to move our mouse until we can inference to the back side of our wall just like this so we've done is we've created a window frame inside of our model so now what we're going to do is we're going to group this and so one easy way to group this is we want to put all of this geometry that's in here in a group so we want to select all of the connected geometry there's two ways we could do that we could start by drawing a box across this to select it and then just right clicking and clicking create group or we could also triple click on this and see how that selects all of the connected geometry and so the only stuff that's connected to that is going to be the actual frame material itself so then we're going to take this right click and we're going to make it a group right so what we've done is we've created a window frame in here and notice how it's a separate group from our wall so then what we can do is we can double click inside of this in order to keep detailing this out and so a lot of this is going to look a little bit different depending on the kind of frame you want to create so let's do something interesting here and treat this like it's a sliding window this window is probably a little big to be a sliding window but let's go ahead and do it anyway so what i'm going to do is i'm just going to double click in here and i'm just going to rough out the profile of the first half of my window right so the way that i'm going to do that is i'm going to find the midpoint using the line tool i'm just going to single click and i'm just going to draw a line notice how i'm using inferencing so i move my mouse until this turn red and then i'm holding the shift key and i'm going to find the midpoint right here right so what that's allowed us to do is that's allowed us to find the middle of our window so then i'm going to draw a line up to right here and then i'm just going to use the rectangle tool in order to draw a rectangle from this corner point over here to this point right here so notice how we've drawn this rectangle in here well now what i want to do before i do anything else with this because this is going to merge with this other geometry and things are going to get a little bit messy so what i'm going to do is i'm just going to double click on this face to select it i'm going to right click and i'm going to select the option for make component so i'm selecting the option for make component instead of the option for make group because we're going to make a copy of this in a second so we're just going to make this a component and we'll just call this window pane glue 2 would be none and then we don't want to select any of these we're just going to click on ok and so now we can go in here by double clicking to edit this and so what i'm going to do now is i'm going to do the same thing i'm going to offset this in by two inches and we might say that this one might actually be more like one and a half so i'll do 1.5 we can delete out this face i'm just going to push pull this forward until it aligns with the front face right here and so what we want to do now is we want to model out a piece of glass that goes in the middle here but i don't necessarily want my piece of glass to merge with the frame geometry so what i'm going to do is i'm just going to triple click again to select this whole thing i'm going to right click and i'm going to click on make group and so remember that what we've done is we've created a component right here to make up this pane well what i want to do is i want to double click in here and notice how my frame has been grouped but i also want to draw a rectangle in here from one corner to the other so i just tap the r key to create a rectangle i just draw this from one face to the other i'm going to right click on this i'm going to reverse my faces so what i have in here now is i have a component that contains a group for my frame and a face for my window well what i can do now because i've already modeled this to make up half of my window is i can just use the move tool in copy mode in order to create a copy so i'm just going to tap the m key click on this corner point and move my mouse but what i want to do is once i've clicked on this corner point i want to tap the control key well when i tap the control key what that does is that puts me in copy mode what that's going to do is that's going to create a copy wherever i click with this original object so now what i have in here is i have a window and so you can use this method to create pretty much any kind of window that you want to and so what i'm going to do because i've already modeled this window out right so i've got this whole window kind of modeled out well this opening should be the same size as this window so instead of modeling this again what i want to do is i'm going to right click on this and i want to make it a component and we're just going to call this external window and then i'm just going to use the move tool in copy mode so tap the m key click on your corner click on your corner point and then tap the control key in order to create a copy well because we made this a component what that means is that means if i come in here and i make a change to something so let's say i make a change to this frame because we made it a component you can see how this other window is changing when i make changes to this object so that means that now if i'm inside of this component and i apply a material so if i go over here and i select like a gray material right like this one right here i apply this notice how when i make the change to one it occurs it changes the other as well and so i'm also going to double click inside of this group i'm going to apply a gray material to this pane i'm going to apply a glass material to the window right here and so you can see how i was able to pretty easily create these windows inside of my model so now let's do the same thing for a door so doors are even easier to create than windows because all you really have to do is create the frame and the door itself and so the way that i'm going to do that is i'm just going to come in here and we'll just draw a door frame right here so the way that i'm going to do that oh and one thing you could do if you wanted to is you could take all of your windows and put them in their own group on their own layer that gets more important if you're starting to do things with the outliner or if you move into the pro version so i'm not going to talk too much about that right now because we're probably not going to be creating too much in the way of floor plans we're not going to be using layout or anything like that with the free online version so for right now i'm not going to worry about it but you could group those like objects together but for now let's just create a door so the way that i'm going to do that is i'm just going to use the rectangle tool again to draw a rectangle across this opening i'm going to go ahead and right click and reverse faces and i'm going to offset this in using offset tool so tap the f key single click and then type in a value of 2 then i'm just going to take this line at the bottom that gets created i'm just going to move it down like this well then we can delete out the door material for right now and we're just going to push pull this frame back until it aligns with this back wall right so now i can take the whole thing triple click on it and i can make it a group so now i have a group for my door then i'm going to go inside of this group i'm going to erase out this extra line that was created i'm going to triple click on my frame i'm going to make a group for my frame so i'm inside of the door group or the door object and i've created another object for the frame well then i'm also going to create an object for the door itself so the way that i'm going to do that is just use the rectangle tool again so just use the r key create a rectangle like this i'll just push pull this to the front of my object and so what i want to do because i've created this door is i want to triple click on it and i want to make that a group as well so now what i have like let's say that we were to go in and create a section cut so if we were to go in click on the tape measure tool and click on a section cut we'll tap the up arrow key in order to look at this straight up and down and then let's say we were to look at this from a straight up and down view you can see how what this is going to show us is this is going to show us a door with a frame and then a door leaf as well so this will show up nicely for our cad file and one thing i've done improperly that i need to fix is this door actually needs to go to the back half of this frame not the front half so i'm just going to move this using the move tool just like this but making that change was really easy so then we can click in here i'm going to turn this section plane back off probably delete it for right now but we can double click in here and we can apply a wood material to our door and then a gray material to our frame so now we have is a door and a frame in here and then since a lot of our doors are going to be the same size we just right click on this and make this a component we can just call this door and then you could put the size that's supposed to be in here as well so you could do like a three foot by seven foot or something like that then we can just use the move tool and copy mode to create copies of this door so that way we don't have to go back through and model it over and over and over again and for this video i'm not going to get into like creating door swings or anything like that [Music] so that's usually something that we're going to use more if we're actually creating like architectural plans and other things like that so we're not going to worry too much about that for right now but you can see how i can use the move tool and copy mode in order to create copies of this over and over again without having to remodel over and over again and notice how you might need to change this for some of these other openings you might have to model a custom door for those for the ones that aren't going to be three foot by seven foot but even making that change should be pretty quick so that's permanent in this video leave a comment below let me know where you'd like to see this series go next what you're using the free version for i just love having that conversation with you guys if you like this video please remember
