[Music] I'm Jody Sanders with American patchwork and quilting and today's videos being brought to you by Baby Lock and the crescendo sewing machine you know as quilters we love to do piecing and we love to machine quilt our quilt tops but then that binding that last step to getting it completed can sometimes be a stumbling block for people well today I want to show you a technique that's called the invisible joint and you're not even gonna be able to tell where that binding stops and starts so we've sewn the binding all the way around and done our minor corners and now we're ready to do the invisible joint at the end of the binding strip we have cut this binding two-and-a-half inches wide so we have a length of it here on each side that's not sewn down and you need that so that you've got the room to manipulate that binding a little bit we've got this sewn down or this place down this goes directly on top of it and you can see right here we've got a little bit of an overlap so what I'm going to do is take a ruler and because my binding is two and a half inches wide I'm going to find where that overlap is and we're gonna go over two and a half inches I'm going to take a pencil and we're gonna mark two and a half inches so we have an overlap from here right here to here okay now we're gonna get our scissor and we're gonna go ahead and trim the excess binding right on that line so we've clipped this off we're gonna turn it around and you can see that we have not sewn we still have this opening here of several inches and this is what we're gonna use to put these two binding pieces together so this is a solid so it's a little hard to tell but this is the right side and then we're going to put the right sides together perpendicular with each other on the two end pieces so you've got this piece here and it's important that you don't twist those pieces because if you do you're going to end up with a twisted binding piece so we're gonna match them together like this and then I'm gonna get a small ruler and they're gonna have a diagonal line that I'm going to mark with a pencil where these two pieces meet and again this is on the back or the wrong side now I've made the mark I'm going to take this away and then I'm going to grab a couple of straight pins and because this is a little hard to maneuver I'm going to put a straight pin on each side of my marked pencil line so that when I take it to the sewing machine those pieces have it shifted or moved okay so now we're going to go ahead and we're going to take it to the sewing machine and we're gonna sew on this diagonal line so we are going to trim this portion off and get rid of that bulk but before you do just to be on the safe side go ahead and take out the pins and then you're gonna lay this down and again you're gonna have a little bit of bulk here and that that will get trimmed away but you just kind of lay it down and make sure that now your binding will lay flat and it looks like it will so we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna trim the excess off so you can grab your scissors I'm going to just turn this around a little bit and again this is why you haven't sewn all of this portion and it's really nice to have that leeway that you can kind of work with so we've trimmed that that's we're gonna discard and most of the time with the binding what I do with this piece is I just go ahead and finger press it down you can take it to your iron if you'd like and you just kind of press that portion open and again that's your diagonal join that you've got there so then you put your pieces back together and you go ahead and complete sewing the rest of that so as you can see this is a really nice diagonal seam that you hardly even notice it looks just like the other ones that you've done to put those binding pieces together I know for me getting my tops done and quilted is my favorite part but then putting the binding is sometimes hard but I know I'm gonna be using this method on all of my quilts on the future
