how to join binding ends well it all starts at the beginning so i have my binding all made up here it's two and a half inch strips sewn on the diagonal together and then fold it in half pressed and then i start my binding with a squared off end and i fold it back two and a half inches because that's what the width of my binding is if i were using a two and a quarter inch binding width i would fold it back two and a quarter inches but since i'm doing two and a half i fold it back two and a half and i'm going to pin it in place and that is where i'm going to have my start then i'm going to take it to the machine and start sewing when i start stitching the beginning of my binding on i start approximately six inches from the top so that brings me down to about right here so this is where i'm going to start put it underneath the machine i use a open toe foot and i have my machine set to a little bit more than a quarter of an inch seam allowance i like that a little bit better than a quarter and i'm going to just start stitching here and i'll stop at the corner and show you how i do a corner when i get to the corner i kind of judge where about a quarter of an inch is from this edge and i'll stop with my needle down and i rotate the full 90 degrees lining up my foot with the edge over here and then i back stitch straight off the back pull that out a little bit make the diagonal 45 degree fold fold it over again so that the fold is even along the top and the edge is even over here put it back underneath the machine and stitch i have my binding off stitch on and i've come back around to the beginning so now is the time to try and join it up i stop my stitching approximately six inches from the fold and what i'm going to do is i'm going to lay this binding down nice and smooth against the quilt and then i am going to cut right at the fold point scary isn't it i also like to shorten it just a little bit and that way i can make sure that i have a nice snug fit if you end up leaving more than six inches on both ends that allows for more room for error and you'll end up having bulk at the end so let's go ahead and go to the stitching all right to join our binding ends we're going to take the top piece that's not folded and we're going to lay it with the wrong side down just like this we're going to unpin the first piece i'm going to scrunch up our quilt a little bit so it all meets up and we're going to lay that on top of the other piece right sides together all right and what we're going to do is match up this top edge and this side edge and then we're going to stitch from the corner to the corner underneath i eyeball it if you need to draw a line get that done yep hit it okay before we trim this little excess triangle fabric off we're going to check the fit against our quilt and that looks like that fits quite nicely you can see that and then we're going to go in we're going to trim this give it a quarter inch seam allowance and then we're going to lay that flat give it a little finger press in one direction and fold it over and resume stitching the binding down to the quilt [Music] let's see what happened with that wrinkle ah no wrinkle on the other side so i'm not there it is right there i'm not gonna worry about it all right and that's how you join binding ends you
