[Music] hey guys I'm Sarah and I'm going to show you how to finish the edges of your quilt in five easy steps here's what you need to get started sewing machine we are doing this all by sewing machine we're not doing any hand stitching on this finding you've got your quilt you need some fabric strips long enough to go all the way around the edges of your quilts a marking pen and ruler step one is to prepare a long strip to go around the edges of your quilt so I've cut my binding strips these are two and a quarter inches and they're just the width of the fabric on the straight of grain and I need to attach these together so that it's long enough to go all the way around so to do that I'm going to take two of my raw edges and I am placing them right sides together so that they cross over each other just like this now you want to mark a straight line that you're going to stitch on you could eyeball this if you feel like you can sew straight I'm going to give myself a line because I tend to sew a little crooked E so I'll just give myself a line and now I'm going to do a straight stitch right down that line now I'm going to cut off the excess leaving about a quarter of an inch fold it open and then press it in half so that all the right sides are facing out and yes you do have to iron I've pressed all of my binding and now we're ready for step two we're going to begin to attach it so I'm working on the backside of my quilt so on the front I've got this floral fabric this is what you want to do too and you want to start in the center of one of the edges of the quilt probably the bottom is a good place to start now we're going to start stitching we don't want to start right at the very top edge we're gonna come down about three inches and begin to sew it with a quarter inch seam the stitch I'm using is exactly quarter of an inch from the edge of my foot built right handed by Rachel stitch number 15 you can always measure and make sure that your stitching is exactly step number three is a mitered corner I have marked exactly a quarter of an inch from the edge of my quilt on the bottom edge of my fabric there I'm gonna sew to that point and then stop and then you're just gonna pivot your fabric and sew right off into the corner so I've got that angled stitch and now I can press the fabric over itself so it just folds right in the corner and then line it up again on the raw edge you get this really nice perfect fold in the corner and now you're just going to start stitching again and work toward the next corner trim those little pointy pieces off before you stitch them [Music] now don't stitch too far you want to make sure that both of your ends are still loose remember we left to this opening here here's where the magic happens I'm going to open this up and just cut an edge an angle and turn it under and then we're going to tuck this one inside of this one and stitch it together so cut the edge where you started off at a 45 degree angle then press the raw edge under about a quarter of an inch lay it nice and flat along your fabric and then bring the ending part of your binding over top of it make sure your binding strips opened up so you can fold the bottom over the ending make sure everything is nice and flat and straight and then continue stitching [Music] I've got a nice edge on my binding I'm just gonna trim off the threads and those little pointy fabric pieces and now this is important you're going to turn this over toward the front of your quilt and make story that you press this get your iron out and press this edge so that it stays nice and straight when you do the final step so now we're going to press all the way around and this is where that mitered corner turns out so well your seam goes straight up into the corner of your binding and that's what you're looking for and then you can also flip it over and then just bring the folded edge of your binding strip right to the seam line on the Front's of your quilts and give that a good press too and that will help to keep everything nice and straight for step number five [Music] now do yourself a favor if you've got some little clips use them to hold the binding in place and it'll keep it straight when you sew so I at first so that it's nice and flat and then add a clip to hold it in place [Music] Step five is the most fun part pick a favorite decorative stitch and we are going to stitch this down now I'm gonna start not in a corner but it's a little further in and I'm just centering my stitch right on the binding I'm using the edge of the foot with the edge of the binding to keep it nice and straight and now we just stitch [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so there's a quick and easy binding in five easy steps now you've got a couple of different design choices you can play with different threads you can leave your stitching all the way on the binding like I did but it also looks really cool if you kind of Center it half way out and half way off looks awesome front and back and you can play with fun decorative threads alright now you're ready go buy a new quilt and thanks for watching [Music] you
