hello everybody adam savage here in my cave for tested.com and it's time for another one-day build and this one well i've done several one-day builds like this before and it's just been a while in fact i haven't done one of these builds all locked down that's right ladies and gentlemen oh i'm gonna wait before i pull this up it's time for a lego build but a really specific kind of lego build yes mando is coming uh if you've been living under a rock maybe one of the best star wars stories that's ever been told as being told right now on disney plus season one of the mandalorian was amazing amazing from a narrative standpoint a technical standpoint a old school special effects standpoint oh and amazing performances all around gina carrera pablo pascal i love this show it's coming back in uh this fall late october early november i believe and i'm going to celebrate its return with building the razor quest the mandalorians beautiful beautiful ship um i forgot a bit of set dressing hold on this is a novo's mandalorian helmet uh it is built off scans of the original it is 100 correct and it is a beautiful beautiful prop this is just lovely let's go um now i am going to try something in this build that i haven't done before with legos which is i'm going to attempt to build this without knowling i know it's like my signature move and yet i feel i feel like maybe i should try it without knowing what the hell what have i got to lose just a little bit of time all right let's open this up hi i'm uh i'm on page 91 i am about wow i'm only about 15 minutes in i'm doing really well here and i'm noticing something pretty cool i'm noticing that the directions are giving a little bit more elaboration here and there uh in some critical ways uh for instance there's this little doohickey here this little guy here that has to go in under here and it's a little bit of a difficult position to see from up top and the directions actually show it to you from up top and then they give you this beautiful view from the side so you're really crystal clear about where the part goes that feels like a new development to me that feels like a refinement of their direction process which is pretty freaking cool as i've said before i worked for a building toy company and we considered lego's instruction manuals to be the gold standard in terms of uh clearly leading somebody through a complex build all right time for bag number three earlier on on the time lapse you might have seen me i was actually as i was throwing a bag out it had a couple of extra little legos in it and i threw them in the trash so i had to empty out the entire trash bag because i was an idiot and lost like a couple of the tiny legos well one of the reasons i like putting on the time lapses is that i can listen to music so i've been listening to ah all sorts of good stuff listening to the little hairy styles listening to a little ed sheeran uh some lord some cardi b some uh yeah okay let's see here oh now we're gonna make ig-11 very exciting there's his feet uh i guess that's gonna be his torso yes and his arms are the wrenches great and his head oh wow his head is just that wait ah right it's got the um that's my giggy and then there should be yep there it is yeah and then he's got this backpack thing which is one of those and one of those it must be really really fun at lego to come up with a brand new part i that must be one of those one of those bucket list moments right where you like design a kit and then you realize you need one new part oh it's great and you like go to the management you're like we're gonna need to shoot another part and it'll be like takes a lot of resources how important is it like it's going to be this versatile et cetera yeah that's got and when you get it across the line it's got to feel amazing all right burn into it pretty quickly here i'm hoping to complete this build in a fairly short period of time i will announce my time when we're done so you guys can compete and tell me how much faster you are at building legos than i am which is probably incredibly much faster okay i'm kind of i'm kind of going by the seat of my pants here and i should probably stop and just reassess because i'm sort of just looking at the drawings instead of the part lists and that's that could get me into trouble i should double check how i'm doing here okay so let's see here oh look at that that goes apparently where like that oh yes it does and then this clicks in i love the way these technic sets help stitch together complex builds come on there we go all right so we're gonna do the same thing again from the other side excellent it's looking like the razor crest ah the razor quest was not just built digitally it was also built two times i want to put yep one there and one there it was also built practically um and my friend john goodson built the razor crest models i think there's more than one now i think they built one for season one and one for season two um yeah i uh i must say i'm a little jealous it must be fun to do some actual model work for the first time in a long time john goodson is one of the best if not the best model maker i have ever watched build models uh i i made a lot of progress when i was working around john by trying to match his speed which is impossible but it did improve my skills tremendously john goodson and john duncan the john's built all the prototypes for doug chang and george up at the ranch for episodes one two and three and totally like this hilarious workspace up there on the third floor building models making dust in a room not built for building models and making dust it was very uh they had a great setup all right that goes there that goes there and when i saw that john was building models for the new one i was excited i mean also because honestly you know real models are this is awesome okay okay i just hit an interesting spot there and uh a couple things one huh all right we just we hit a couple of things and i'd like to talk about them one is uh i just built these two these four wings for the ship and uh when you're building multiple parts of the same thing lego is great about telling you this is a 2x part a 4x part it tells you how many you're going to assembly line but when you have parts that are chiral that is that they are mirror images of each other lego instructions do not tell you oh you're going to do another six steps just like this a little bit later and i feel like it could i feel like it could tell you hey uh steps 96 to 102 102 are going to be the same as steps 92 to 96 something like that um so i'm just suggesting within your instructions that maybe mirror image builds could somehow be more clearly uh illustrated because sometimes it's actually really quite easy to lay something out and and build it uh in mirror images but the other thing i want to talk about is this instruction i just finished the the dudes in carbonite that slot right in here in the side of the ship and my difficulty was figuring out how this goes in because it doesn't look like it clicks into anything and it turns out that it doesn't click into anything it slides in there the problem is is there's no depth of field in this illustration i mean that's a very specific design choice you guys have gone with that i respect that and i respect that it probably gives you all sorts of options in other ways but one option it removes is understanding that some parts of this drawing are not on the same plane and when they're all the same color value they feel like they're on the same plane and i've gotten into trouble on lego builds like that before so again my suggestion might be for certain builds just a little bit of airbrushing okay uh i've just hit one of those mirror image builds starting at step 223 so i am going to pull these parts out and build them exactly as mirror images of each other so 224 this comes across it comes across uh 225 gets one of these and one of these yep uh 226 of those lovely s capper piece all right ladies and gentlemen what you are looking at here are imitations oh come on come on come on where'd you go there you go i literally just saw you fall okay we're sending out a search party found it all right uh where are we at we're here i'm doing that and then we're adding one more of those yes then oh yeah like that yep and then like that yup okay twink see doing these like this it's much less tedious to me because because i'm not going through the same thing a second time i'm just doing them both at once and would you like efficiency like i do well then okay so uh like that and like that see we're doing great these two pieces are exactly mirror images of each other i'm not putting the stickers on okay so now okay i guess the blue tick blue tick when i was a kid we were driving and we saw this sign that said blue tick collies puppies for free and we pulled over and uh i didn't have dogs going that was my dad was terribly allergic but um but uh they were beautiful those colleagues those collies they were lovely um one two three one and two and a three we never you know it's did i say this already we never did how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop we never did that on the show and we should have to be honest we had a whole we actually i designed a methodology for that and the methodology uh it uh it involved it involved making a cow's tongue or a pig's i think it was a cow's tongue uh a pig's tongue that would um that we could keep moisturized with fake saliva yeah this is gonna be a real gross one that we could keep moisturized with fake saliva uh so that you could see how many licks it took to get to the center of a tootsie pop and a counter right so the tongue would like it would moisten and lick the tootsie pop and the counter would go off by one moist and lit count by one moist and lick count by one and we would calibrate it to our own tongues yeah okay uh let's see this is that's that side right and so this is that side and that comes oh look at that like multiple attachment methods plus indexing and now i've done the other side so i've already ah dude this is fabulous okay i can skip from 249 all the way to 273. boom we are opening bag number five okay we have another character here he's got legs he's got a gun he's got two guns two short guns i don't know why i'm talking like this have you seen the movie free fire can i just say free fire with silly and murphy brie larson army hammer charlton copley is a mind-blowing masterpiece of a movie super super fun okay uh we are now moving towards the top of the race request there's a bunch of parts i haven't seen before in this kit little tiny triangle parts and some little detail pieces okay just two of those okay so two of these my only issue with this kit is that i want it to be shinier i love the silver finish of the razor quests razor crests outer hull two those little jumpers one and two the other thing that's nice about some of the star wars lego builds specifically is that star wars is a it's it's a beat up reused universe right where everything gets repurposed and that means that like you know in the star wars aesthetic two of those and two of those in the star wars aesthetic you would never have like five things all brand new lined up on the side of a ship one of them is missing and there's like a rust street and the way lego designers seem to deal with that within the lego design parameters is they use a bunch of different colors they use they use all the grays and they use like you know they make it sort of that kind of mechanical calico that is the star wars that is the star wars design aesthetic mechanical calico that's actually that's kind of a cool term we used to have long discussions in the island model shop about the aesthetic differences between star wars and star trek yeah okay two more of those they're using every hinge in the lego universe in this build and i appreciate about that about them because every lego design is not just about the aesthetics it's also about the aesthetics of the play that will happen with that set and you can feel that in some of these sets that someone's like oh this is gonna be fun to play with oh that is great that's really neat that's not the correct hinge to attach it to but it provides just enough that is super freaking cool okay moving on we're doing good we are two hours and 15 minutes in i am on bag number six actually bags number six because six has two bags oh two outer bags there might even be more okay like i said there was one more bag in the inside here this is gonna be awesome big engine cells i can see it happening you can see it all through the yellow windows evening train go okay moving on up i'll bet these are cairo they are okay uh i'm about to build the two huge side engines that sit here and um we're gonna build them chirally which means uh you know mirror images so we have two circles one and two and we have two black circles that go in the middle of those two of these and i'm going to build these as opposites of each other and then we have four of these there they are one two three won't fall that guy he's a little curvy guys that's a fascinating part okay so that goes like that that goes like that there and there this is a that is a super rare color i went when i sorted my legos i ended up with like eight of those pieces i mean it's really really rare one of each of these goes there and then these guys live right there of those and those right let me do that and that and that fits there and that fits and that is a really nice little little join there nothing that sticks on top of the green leprechaun piece oh and another green leprechaun piece these green pieces there's a lot of them in the yellow submarine build or at least more than usual um light gray on top light gray on top what that and that this is a really this is a lovely build it's very straightforward just classic this is like a classic lego build except there's some really cool engineering going in this i really like it pretty much right okay oh there's a third layer goodness gracious okay and that guy i see now i have another couple of those that one and that one and another one more there it is there and there that that is it that's just lovely engineering very excited we are close we are so freaking close we are about to put the engine of cells on here comes one ah here comes the other oh yeah and then oh right since i did those carly i don't have to worry about them so turn this turn this did that did that did that did that did that put all of those okay now where do those i see oh they actually fire ha ha how about that amazing they actually fire that's great and they gave me an extra laser beam just in case mando i think it's time to take your rightful place i don't think you need your gun in there i think you could actually go with the the baby yoda yep there we go baby yoda baby yoda store the extra lasers there the photon torpedoes that is gorgeous oh this razor crest is a lovely build it's got all sorts of wonderful functionality it's got ramps it's got photon torpedo storage oh it's got all of the parts of the ship that you can see in the show most of them are represented yeah this is this is a lovely platform for narrative play and a little handle here for the cockpit and there you've got your oh mando and it looks like he's snuggling baby yoda there we go there you have your mando and your baby yoda dude that was a super fun build i thought it might be doable this afternoon and i was right that is great oh lovely the razor crest ladies and gentlemen ladies and gentlemen please oh whoops there we go ah my razor crest is done my mando is ready for adventure oh he's got carl weather she's got a short trooper he's got the baby that's great um that was a super fun build thank you guys for joining me for this i've got some custom lego builds i'm gonna do soon but that was really really fun that was a fun establishment lego build thank you guys for joining me
