"Some of us are so ashamed of even the most inoccent aspects of who we are that eventually we run out of people to be"

This is painfully true. I shudder to think how much of my life was and is spent worrying what other people think about me and my interests.

Additional info from Twitter:

this review of TOKIMEKI MEMORIAL is the biggest video i have made. if you look at it as a "YouTube Video," yes: it's five hours, fifty-six minutes, and twenty-six seconds long. however, i encourage you to think of it as six one-hour videos produced over a period of eight months

for example: i know that a lot of my viewers have not, can not, and will not ever play this game, so two of the episodes of this "review-series" consist of let's plays of two full playthroughs of the game

i have intended every video so far on YouTube Dot Com Slash Action Button as a miniseries of itself, though i realize most viewers watch the whole thing in one sitting. consider the double length of this video an even more extreme encouragement than usual to Take Your Time!

if you liked my "let's mosey" final fantasy vii series even a little bit: this is for you. it's roughly as long and just as weird. back patreon dot com slash action button if you wanna see a fifteen-minute (terrible, "hilarious") deleted scene next week. cyberpunk is up next!!

Didn't Tim say episodes were going to get shorter after Doom?

Not complaining! I'm looking forward to his 24 hour long review of Pong.

I have not yet watched this video, but if I know anything about Tim Rogers, its that this isn't actually a six hour video about Tokimeki Memorial - Its a six hour video about life....through the lens of Tokimeki Memorial.

Tim Rogers produces some of the best - if not THE best - analytical content about video games as a whole. Its not just about "this is what game X does bad" or "game X: Y years later," its about how that video game shaped the lives of people who played it and the industry as a whole. And thats some truly amazing work that few people can pull off. Really hope that this doesn't get pulled down for being "primarily entertainment," his content really is so much more than JUST entertaining and should be shared.

This video better result in a damn translation patch for the main series. The only games that have gotten translations are Girls Side.

So has anyone here actually played any of these games?

I have TM2 and 3. Never played 1. 2 was pretty nice and had some funny callouts to other media and games and stuff. 2 even had a thing to use for a PocketStation, even though it consumed the entire 15 blocks of space on it. 3 was neat for how all the side hobbies you could choose to undertake would alter your endgame result after graduation. It also tried to let you have your own name be spoken by the girls, but that didn't work out too well.

It's been more than 15 years since I touched either of them. Maybe some day.

I love that he said this video would be way shorter than his last one and this one wound up being a quarter of a day long.

I will 100% watch all of it.

This is the first time i actually saw an English discussion/review about this game. This is one of my childhood memory. I first played TM1 on Gameboy when I was 9, had no idea how to solve bombs. So I end up being a hardworking nerd who gets no gals at all (lol). After a few tries I get a hang of the system and most importantly, I learnt how to S/L :)

I would recommend TM4 on PSP to anyone who want to play this series. It has done a ton of QoL enhancement and you can equip skills to help with dating/studying. You can also manage your social life other than dating, for example you can work part time job to get money for buying gift, and dating girls in a better place like ski resort. For skill tree, you need to get lower tier skill to unlock high tier skill, high tier skill are quite broken, some can help you get your relationship with girls almost never fall down; some skills allow you to only study two weeks per semester and still get high score in the final. Once a high tier skill unlocked, you can directly learn it in your next run, without the need to spend exp on low tier skill. So after you unlock the whole skill tree, you can live a high school life whichever the way you like.

I always see complaints in these threads about how Tim’s work is too self-indulgent, or that he talks about himself too much, and it always makes me think β€œuh, yeah, that’s the point.” He’s obviously influenced by the New Journalists like Tom Wolfe, Gay Talese, Joan Didion, etc and the point of these videos is not to provide a buyer’s guide, but rather explore the subject by immersing the self within it. It’s a blend of criticism and memoir, and as a fan of new journalism, I find that so much more enjoyable than most YouTube content that gets posted on this sub.
