[Music] welcome to acne quilt and November I'm here with Teresa hi everybody she's gonna help me today we're doing the three hour quilt with an a key quilt cutter I'm gonna be using the regular go because I've got muscles and so we're gonna start off with the block so this was called wish upon a star it started off as a peace block and then later on we converted that that quilt into a 12 inch and then we thought that we'd write instructions on how to do it the a key quote way so it has on this one it has flying geese show it Vanna blanks is right here by you doing with half triangles and the center oh sorry we should actually start use this with the 10 inch cube right right and just in case you guys didn't know the way that the cubes work is if you were to imagine this as a four patch this is 10 inch finished right so this is five and five so if you go across we're at 30 inches so it's a 30 inch block finished cool and didn't you want to show that shapes this is your shape one go ahead your Mike is your shave shape three the half triangles and the quarter triangles we're gonna use to you do this part right here okay so you're only gonna use three dies yep okay and then this one uses the scallops vines and waves and this one's a great one it actually turns out that this is a 44 inch quilt right think about 44 I think it's 44 inches and when you do the math it's perfect because there's six perfect scallops okay it could be it's just you're gonna measure it and here's our last one yeah okay okay all right so I wanted to start off with strips so here's your 10 inch cube this is what you guys are all gonna be using I wanted to show you a different way of cutting using this die here so this is the cutter number five five oh eight six and it is a six inch finished and it's going to cut six and a half inches strips the way that the your booklet is written it's for a six and three-quarters but if you're really careful you can use this at six and a half you just won't have as much fudge factor on on either side so she's gonna put you can show it right there right there yeah we're just gonna cut strips okay there you go all right so we're gonna first cut some strips and what she did is she lined up the I'm gonna move this back so if you don't want to snip your little edges this line right here is right where the blade starts so I think that one of the the the biggest problems is that people slide this too far forward there's lots of room at the other end so I moved it back just a hair and I'm gonna put it through my cutter and she's cutting six layers at a time right I believe I had a fight because I have more you push down and turn and lift all right so what we're going to do is we're going to start with squares so I'm gonna get rid of these yep in case you guys didn't realize I put the the label it always goes towards the power whether is a button or a hand-cranked okay and then I'm going to use my 45 or am i yeah it's a 45-degree right 90 yes thank you I can blame it on quilt timers but I think it's just nerves and what we're gonna do is we're gonna fold it over you might have too many layers why don't you just think to so you can do what are you doing I'm gonna do it but there was ten of him no you cannot do that okay fine don't worry sorry can you leave it leave it leave it it's okay all right so I should use the smaller Mac and then I can just feed it through and I don't have to worry about cranking it oh it's not don't worry let's just hope should there you go push turn that's sticking just a little bit good job weird but uh can you do these Housel seconds parade you sense then you're gonna sell wait sure so once again I don't want to go too close to my line because I have lots of room at the end or at least I should crank it through am i doing squares yeah you're going to I'm just separating what do you need alright ok put my hand on here twist turn and we're gonna get rid of that and get rid of that and then we're gonna make our squares and I'll go down at the bottom flip it over and I'm just hanging over just a little bit I do so they're telling me that I have a wrinkle in it did you see that on the close-up camera there - and use these men I need more of these squares okay thank you thank you all right all right so we cut off all the little bruised edges we can get rid of them this is fun and then you want me to cut these two sure so we start off with scraps and then we made strips and then now we made squares yep all with that die yeah now you're gonna cut you shapes that you need you wait what would you like to start with your shape one we're gonna start with shape one okay so now we're going to reduce this six and a half inch square down to I believe six and quarter find a cat five and a half yes five and a half that particular one so it's already twisted so when you put it in you do not need to turn your die so it's straight that will eventually ruin it and then it'll start jumping this is straight on it's no good so I'm going to keep it as it was intended and won't put it through and I think I'm cutting a lot more layers on this one than before and I should I think they're six on be there no mm-hmm so that's your shape one so shape one okay thank you now was that in the next one you next one is three eight three we're gonna do our half square triangles and what she did is she she held me and she smart stack them so they're right sides together and they're gonna be ready to sew so we don't really have to do much thinking all we'll do is we'll pick them up and we'll just sew them from there so smart stacking is when you put them right sides together and you cut them at the same time and let there's plenty of space even though I cut these things down to six and a half inches there is a good quarter inch on either side well that's what they told us well so she asked me why I put the label to the power and I think that the the reason for that is that the the dyes were designed a certain way and I think the way that they work is let's say the smaller area will get cut first then it'll move to a larger area that's just what I'm imagining so or that way on some dyes yeah they inserted that blades yeah so I don't know that's what I was told I think it works really well for the strip dyes because there's a space in the front and the back okay yeah we carry more yes from these dye this is this is now you can't renew green also for you geese which the right size together so once again she's smart stack them so I can just cut them straight through [Music] and then are we doing no more yeah you're doing one more over with yes no mostly just want to do that one alright so this one it doesn't matter because we're just gonna piece these things on so they're all right sides up the reason why I use this one is I wanted to kind of show you didn't need electricity you can cut when the power is out you know and you could do a camping you can bring it over to thank you your family's house over the holiday now you're gonna do shape for and this is the one is gonna be very close and measurements so make sure they since we all need to use an extension cord yeah you can have a good hunting party that's the quarter square so huh the quarter squares we leave them on there I thank you yeah all right and that's it for cutting that's for cotton I saw you units trace here so we're gonna start off with the green all right these guys whole big one-page we're gonna follow the directions yeah yes okay so am i selling yeah sure all right there we go there your assembly line two goats so I'm gonna be using this so straight these things already have the dog ears taken out it's been a long time since I've sewn since the last time I did a demo you could use your pick actually as your stiletto let's try that doesn't come off too tight so the cube is the newest or the the ten inch cube is the newest cube for a key quilt this may give you a reason to purchase it it's great for doing the four patches I think the four patches are more common than a larger block than what we're making but if you need to get your quilts done really fast they're really cool cuz it's not a lot of piecing it's really simple shapes with a large area medium color and she's gonna press I think in opposite directions right no this is to your medium copy he's gonna do it to the dark medium she's calling it the medium but we'll just say Orion will call it I'll call it dark okay there just lay it out now you are your heart so I'm gonna lay out the block your corner yeah they're squares and we're gonna flip it right sides together so done so any questions do you guys want to know where Eleanor is so Eleanor is in Houston every year around Halloween they have International Quilt Market Market is the the wholesale part of quilt I guess quilts Inc Quilt Festival is the retail end and right now she's doing quilt market today is a it's a learning like it's its pre-show and that's where we do a thing called schoolhouse and she's gonna be teaching everybody about the log cabin and she's doing a demo with benartex and it's gonna be pretty much 40 years of the log cabin and later on they have this thing called sample spree and samples free is super cool that's where you can buy 1 z 2 Z's wholesale and they used to the ladies used to run in and there was it was crazy because I was always afraid they were gonna step on each other they're running too usually the mode of booth that's that's the first stop and they buy jelly rolls in that sort of thing and then you bring it home and you can have ladies make samples of the the quilts before they come out so that's where a loaner is at Houston she's gonna be doing a book signing in the babylock booth are we swirling it yes okay so here we go sorry luck yeah it's pretty good you're getting the zoom in match yeah so you can do one of two things you can clip it and then you could pull it out with your scissor tip the little stitches here or you can use your stiletto I think I'm a stiletto yes sorry so anybody with big hands I think they can sympathize yeah so now what we're gonna do is we're going to push it it'll just pop yep and we're gonna push can I actually what look he did that I just wanted ik x he did his for patch which Elinor did it here that's the same way excuse me this is the same one as Elinor did oh look she prepared all the demo and she didn't do it with red thread huh we're gonna have to turn she did it anyway do you see his block is the same as these two they're going like clockwise and in these two blocks going the opposite on o'clock works so that means when you sew the other two your seam make sure the other two goes down okay I just wanted you to see that that then eventually you're gonna see everything is gonna align so it locks later on okay so these are gonna put in them this time well we can go for the next step ready oh good now is the flying yeah we'll make the geese there you can make and she's smart stocked them so they're ready to sew right yes all right so I I used to go to quilt market and when I had kids oh I vowed that I would do Halloween instead we're gonna do it let's just hope so enforce it whoo you want some of your scraps from the floor I risked it and it paid off it's kind of moving over so and neither one so I wish I would tell my my kids they ask me about breaking the law and I said well most people speed and they don't go to jail for fudging the speed limit but if you do something really bad you go to jail and that would probably consist of of me showing you that that would be breaking the law there's a lot of machines would break because of me so now he's so it and now that our directions chose you right here to press to press one towards your background and one in one towards you dark see and I might even be able to join them together for him right here let's do it then you'll come and then your lock do you seems a wiggle then your seams are locking okay that's what we call him so I'm gonna they're locking up at the top and I'm just kind of wiggle match them in they'll fall in there then there's my big finger let me press it a little bit nothing okay okay without a threat you need to threaded the machine no no I'll do it for you whoa did you see that on the course up it's okay okay I see yeah well what with big hands you have big feet okay actually before when I was doing those the quilt tribe I took off my shoe there you go it's ready they go all right I'm like getting over that little hump you know yes it's when you go slower all right I think I've got it got it cross your fingers hello good good job we'll put this aside as his flying wings good job now we're gonna make the making the fruit set of a star points and we made this this method was originally from our victory quilts we did a border using it and we called it a ribbon border so if you if you make a bunch of these blocks and then you turn them it's a really cool like ribbon goes up and down or am I saying you're just gonna sew these together see you basically know if you want to see it you've had it right this way right here okay mm-hmm oh but then turn it turn yes your background light so the light goes on the top yes and this way that's what I was going to check that and it looks like I'm going to press towards my right oh I'm sorry it is to the left look so you'll notice that left and it is too bad I laugh when you press your till my right where do you press my right and she said let's just say you said press to the left yeah she said press to the left that's my ride though it is towards the left okay alright now I'm going to press towards you towards the light-dark okay okay sorry around I'm pressing I was looking at the second one oh yeah so we're just going to okay now press towers down and you're gonna see these put in in top of your wrist yep okay so I'm gonna place my patches right on top and they're going to match and we won't have to fighter seems which is great because it's pressed down and I'm excited I haven't had to use a jumper scrap you worried that I'm gonna jinx myself yeah today is a good day it's Friday I'm going to Sea World tomorrow my daughter just turned eight years old and we were supposed to bring a group of kids down there but I don't know if it's gonna happen anymore so it might just be family is it gonna be hot oh that's great it's been cold so the coolest show at SeaWorld right now I would say is pets rule or I guess it's pet swirl they have all these cats and dogs that are rescue animals that they do all these tricks and then they have hammy the pig that comes out and he pulls like little levers it's really cute and then the same thing he's gonna do press one towards your quarter squares and then another one towards your half half triangles okay am I still sorry yeah you Wow now I have two two daughters six in an eight-year-old and they're a lot of fun actually we Elinor actually bought us tickets like your round tickets for SeaWorld I take them down there a lot we like to go and there's this right when you go in there's these fish that they eat your skin cells and you put your hand in there so that's that's kind of cool we have a boat down there it has it's on a Maureen ball and it's almost like beachfront property for $700 a year so it's crazy it's one of those San Diego those people don't know about it but yeah it's a secret it's really cool you do have to clean it like scrub the bottom and I used to dive down and you take like a Home Depot spatula he's grateful tell he didn't know her what he is doing he did it in that long side so I'm gonna have him so one more and you can tell myself no no no that's okay I'll do it let me take two seconds all right so this is on the bias so you want to be really careful but basically all I have to do is get it started we have today me you can just say yeah terrowin are like she's like what she does right there's no going there we go I was thinking about the boat yeah I know no you there's so if you go on Craigslist you can see all these people that are trying to sell their boats right now they're selling them really cheap because it's winter no wants to clean their boat and you can pick these things up for a thousand dollars and they're right on the beach ours is uh on the beach it's about 20 feet away from the shore you can take surfboard and paddle out or kayaks leave all your stuff on there it's pretty cool I have a ranger I'm not much of a sailor we we bought it without me ever having a license lesson in my life now these I'm going to press towards the light okay I will showed you the last one we press was we press towards the dark I can't see but I know but that's why I'm giving it to you right here this this is what we for will keep in there how about that now this is - you know what you were saying is that she press them towards the triangle and then some towards the half triangle right that night in dark the light in the dark mm-hmm yeah and then we're gonna don't take those yeah they don't match they don't no they got they they go from up left or right now you know we're gonna do another one he puts them right sides together and then so we're gonna have it going down so we're not fighting our seams so I haven't gone out into the real ocean yet well just the bay I I did did did once but that doesn't really count it was very scary the waves started coming and I had the motor going and kind of turned around he was very scary and I I wanted my kids to come out just in case we crashed but they they stayed inside the boat so I decided I wasn't gonna do that with them again they had their vests on so they're kind of ready to abandon ship any questions No what's that again for for yeah so she asks how many times do we have to make this patch for time for time uh-huh and he's only doing two but we just need to showed you how things looked okay it's common okay so these was pressed oh why don't we just finger press it you can finger press but this time we pressed holds the red now you press two down other other two pieces first I'm saying right here we're gonna press space and then when we put them together they gonna enough they're gonna lock so just a minute put it on the side to make sure there we go see there is your start point so I do but I think I should give you a little press here for you okay there you go so these going down and this is up and you're gonna sew them together okay and that and everything is locking even in the bottom you want to show them well as she just said the top is going up the bottom seam is going down we're gonna go wiggle match it together and it's gonna be the exact same on the bottom I'm only worried about this little corner because it's a jump so all I've been doing is go over that I've been lifting my needle up and then I've been cheating I push it just a thread forward and then step on the gas and now we can see how I did there goes join something together and you saw this you can press it you see it get it and then see you at the block yes I'm that your sign well you have a student on the design walk do we have can we more of them can we just show them no I just want to show you them depressing two different ways all right you want show yeah I need this see this is pressed towards the smaller quarter triangle and this is towards the geese okay and that's this goes on that side or right can I do it just like this yeah trying to do that and then these two and the opposite side okay and everything is lucky yeah so sometimes this square is not going to come out perfect so if your seam allowance is too big or too little you might have to adjust on here so it's not always gonna be a perfect ten and a half inch square so just you know make it whatever it is so let's just look at mine I'll move it to the right so you can kind of see see how it's just a little bit smaller well I didn't make this work you also saw me so in red thread answer right here all your seams are locking this is going this way and the picture tells you exactly this is going this way this is going up this is going down okay so when you saw your black together this is down this is so you know everything every every little seam is going to lock in page in Paige oh I don't have page but right in here if a Eric and show you really close up the scenes shows you what direction you're gonna lay it out so if you follow exactly how a rhyme did he's sewing and pressing everything should lock this way for you and that's the purpose they will he saw all the way to Charlie so we prepared to show how to use the scalloped ruler oh sure hey why do you guys wanna see I use a scalp roller okay alright there it is alright do you have your trusty tape measure yes I did not bring that calculator I welcome get it all right so how about I'll just show this block because this is really nice so she left plenty of space around for the border there's a couple of different ways we're going to show you how to do this use the scalloped ruler you can do the wave as well but this one is nice because it works perfect it's a square which you'll have even scallops on both sides so first what you're going to do is you're going to measure it we're going to use this and we get to do a little bit of math so this is a 24 inch mat and 24 plus 17 is what 41 all right so it's 41 inches all the way across and we're going to use the calculator so my book 41 and we're going to go that's right we're gonna go in from our from our edges so what we're going to do is we're going to take away 4 so 41 minus 4 equals 37 and then what we're going to want to do is divide that by an even number that lets say that let's say you wanted to do 7 so you would divide it by 7 but in our case I want to do 6 so we're going to divide it by 6 equals so it's six point one six so that point one six isn't that much and you can fudge that in the middle okay so it's not a lot and what we're going to do is we're going to work from our edges and we're gonna go in towards the center and that last scallop actually it'll be right there this last scallop will be a little bit longer okay so this good alright and then how about a rumor yes do you want to do it go for it alright so she's gonna draw a diagonal line and she's using the edge of the quilt tomorrow her 45 then I go in two inches in each corner so that was our sub we was subtracted by by four so I'm marking this okay then when you start from that side he wants to start like right-handed I wanted left-handed right it's okay so he can like already did the math so we did we did six and what L&R likes to do is so she doesn't goof up she likes to market with visit oh not in busy grips go align tape oh yeah you do so you can see the marks on this ruler you can see the up from here five six seven eight so we're right up there so if we go tear off the little piece of it we won't go past that line or less than on line mm-hm I think you're supposed to cut it ideas okay let you go from there okay so now I'm lining out my six that he marked there for me to my six there so I'm making a scholar from six to six see okay and then I do another six and she's using a water erased pen yeah I need to do those corners I'll hold it okay she's using a water erased pen I I stay away from the the friction pins I like to use something that's air race or water erase and I'll show you how cool this one is so what we gonna do is measure what you have here okay there is one two three four scholars with it so we measure from here to here and it is about 13 and a quarter divided in two so it's about six and a half in inside so I'm gonna make these two scallops six-and-a-half okay see how we are Justin so I'm going to go from my six in a quarter then I clean in a six in a quarter in the other in makes six and a half do you follow me okay good good there and then the next one will go because people gets confused with our number because one quarter from one side and one quarter for the other and look see how prefer that the math works see right there so oops I think I think what what happened is that we went in too far on this one did I you think I didn't do six in a quarter I think I did well I'll show you that this will be a little bit bigger than and it still is gonna work really good and you're not going to see much difference and especially in a bigger club look I'm going to mark them more for you even if they do win off a quarter of an inch or or half an inch you're not going to see them difference and them and and that what was happening I think is that oh oh that line it it's the very fruits mark is going to determine where you're gonna line it up in this case I line it up right and these a half an inch about this main line do you see that it depends how big your scallop is so wherever the first night that you line it up and the first one you can also mark it with your embassy grid everyone is gonna be that way because if you do a nine inch I'm gonna only line it up with these main line here but you line it up all these little marks here is depends where you want to line it up and it shows you in the very first scallop whatever size you did then you can put also a mark there very very detailed instructions and tells you all the math what did subtract and not do it's very very nice that main thinking everyone is that you mark you two inches from each corner you know in two inches to me I have not to do just your your your turn and there's a nice to be able to do your curve into it and then you're not wasting a lot of fabrics yeah so there would be no reason to mark any further I did but let me show you since this is not going to be the same this is like the biggest wave is nine inch in low comma lado you're gonna waste in here do you see what I mean if I make it I have we had a determined where we were stopped so we stopped on the nine inches when they develop these in there was hardly any waste if you make them smaller you have more ways than to your border and we were also trying to make it so there was perfect six inches another you have a question about it [Applause]
