Abandoned Highrise Mental Hospital in the Middle of NYC - Operating Rooms and Padded Cells

in this episode we're exploring the former buildings of the Bronx state hospital opened in 1964 this campus was New York State's first mental hospital in three decades the centerpiece of the hospital was the 680 bed medical surgical building featuring state-of-the-art medical facilities and housing for the general patient population adjacent to Medical surgical was the reception building this housed offices and provided more space for patient treatment a few Wards of this building were reserved for Disturbed patients that needed more safety and a higher level of security there was also the Bronx children's psychiatric center which was constructed in the 1970s by the 1980s the hospital was severely overcrowded a sensus showed that bronxy was over capacity by more than 100 patients on some words there were two to three wom employees to handle 30 or more young men it was reported that room temperatures could go as high as 87° with no central air the hospital was severely underfunded explored this place was in the lobby and they were sitting on the step smoking a cigarette wow trouble group zero no other arms okay let's just not touch these let's leave that where we found it and these uh where they would keep all the medicine probably still patience they breide all these shells would have been filled with drugs drugs only no food inspected was 1992 well they didn't leave anything behind in there yeah expired 2011 there are one single pill left in the entire Pharmacy that's kind of funny it's a good amount of Decay but still having power it's just strange The Best of underneath this water is uh electricity yeah this was definitely a pathology building morg if there is one is going to be around here o the smell in there oh bu must be a dead that's an old Auto clave it's in here for storage but oh it's like ripped out of the wall [Applause] yeah probably if you hard enough but it's just going to be empty what's that blue machine down there it it says syringe destruction oven oh wow smells about everywhere in this placea sh it's in a weird location but yeah blue tiles this is all upgrading probably let's see if there's power on in here conductive Hospital accessories conduct a meter here's the uh the wash bay with the leg controls very old style another oper room ooh there's a light these are old this is cool it's a little it's a little jammed up even these lights up in the corner are so old looking got your X-ray viewer right there General Electric Man yeah I mean if you could turn any of the stuff on here it would be sick you trying switches uh this whole floor has power cut I think this one's very [Music] similar this autoclave is still here so I wonder where the other one came from oh yeah same autocave though no it's not it's a little ink I mean this place was built in the late 60s I believe so we've done older hospitals that have newer looking lights but I think these are just the original lights from' [Music] 60s more Labs oh yeah we saw the Slime before right here's some biry showers outside of every room these look stripped this one hasn't been stripped not much left this is a big centrifuge that is dated and when there's a fire you're going to be like yeah where' them hose at okay this lights going to be like the hand painted fire hose sign how did you get this open oh wow this looks retro the pastel green that space Agy ceiling here's a little map so there's four three stairs in the main building and two in that one let's just walk around and see if we see any rooms that have stuff in them yep there's a chair just chilling indeed there is God oh look at this we have an object an object it's one of those uh assistive tubs the chairs right there yeah these are quite common I've never seen an old instruction thing for it though navigate the whole Maze of these things area behind the St is used by revite team keep out it's locked look at all the colors this place has been there's even like what is this you see that wow it's like a black green yeah it looks original that's like the base cuz concrete's right behind it yeah plaster you never see these anymore no dial toone a motion sensor right similar yeah just ceilings in better shape we'll do a quick walk around see there's some of those old divider things without the actual divider yeah it's an open Ward this wall is looking very crusty right here the light being on makes it look even better the Shadows from all the crusties [Music] yeah [Music] this room has a really creepy Vibe the fans it's like the old looking fans with a modern Space Age ceiling yeah and then these random circles that were probably they had wood paneling on the wall or [Applause] lights we're at the elevators again Department of Psychiatry intensive cases this staircase has the uh classic Asylum grate might as well go up it's creepily lit this Hall staircase would have been awesome when it was the original green color with these really warm lights sure they were something else originally different lights this floor is different no it's not oh got some different colors here yeah also look all these fluorescents were installed over the original incandescent that's interesting these still have some Originals it's always [Music] colorful counseling room it's a little weird yeah it's pretty creepy and small they didn't finish this drawing yeah that's just a little unsettling zip the lip Okay that's some knocker [Music] counseling nothing looking interesting check out this one says the quiet room it's got this thick door probably would had a window there it's just another small windowless room with similar drawings on the walls zip the lip once again all is said and done too many people just keep on talking jeez there's a a time off schedule with dates from 1994 on it why does it feel like so many of the New York pych centers are 13 floors magic number isn't Kings Park 13 floors too I think it is we're not even halfway to the top it looks the same as the other floors what look at this we're on floor six and there's a great you're right they were isolating those floors yeah maybe it was Uh something's different about them these into offices this says bedroom so they would have had patients here so they stopped using the lower floors first these look more water these used more recently for sure new door knobs no original locks yeah new exit signs ler all the original locks mhm let's peek into the lobby area where the main elevator bank is washroom over there this was definitely like patient living yeah resident name Halloween party we were on fire lol there's some stuff down here gym equipment wow it's a fall gym damn lot of stuff in here huh that's a lot of drips and there's more floors above here quite a few this is what the 10th floor yeah so it's pipe leaking or it's just dripping through all of the floors above us we'll find out I mean there's power here that exit sign is [Music] lit [Music] this looks heavy pick it on my left hand nope probably would need both hands it's one of the biggest dumbbells I've ever seen oh my God is this thing way jeez why covered in duct tape one of these is 80 lb I guess both together would have been 80 okay so then this is probably at least 100 lb yeah why are they duct taped probably cuz if you dropped this it would fuck up the floor so they tried to cushion it a little bit yeah maybe I don't know [Applause] that's a big flake this might be the single largest paint flake I've ever taken off a wall in one piece this is all connected although it's about to break wow it's like all noed over here this is schol what is it and look no they did not they did not draw that it's drawn oh my God it's drawn why it's the ward number 39 mural project I wonder which one of these names is responsible for that only got a few more floors left is it open yeah cool second to last floor did they strip the floor yeah there's no espressa tile they were doing work up here this floor looks extra Barren compared to the others you want just immediately go to 13 yeah sure okay let's just go up how's this one looking I don't know has power in here there is power yeah the last few floors didn't yeah this is stripped this is maintenance stuff why would they bring all of this stuff up here yeah I don't know like this is so weird this is a new LED Street Lamp like that's an LED panel yeah the elevators had to have been working when they brought this stuff up I mean maybe they still work we don't know this floor is shorter than the others I believe yeah so the upper floors were actually the less interesting ones they seem to have been used more recently something is a little different with this floor CU there's stairs here and I did not see stairs in this location on any other floor we're not going to get locked out right it's just a connection to the next floor this is the colorful yeah okay let's let's go to the other building let's head down to the first floor oh yeah check for the go to the other building okay has to be this room then right where the fuck does that elevator go was it this that's sealed right here oh it was I think it was it was there's the button for it this was the morg there's the drain you're right it was tiny little or like this wall was added in or something I don't know I feel like this was it man it was painted white too it was better before huh oh well yeah this was the morg at least we know now maybe freezers would have been here I think freezers could have been here all right let's head to the Breezeway that goes to the h-shaped building you could see the light against the window right here what do you mean in that office Oh Yeah from the [Applause] outside it's walled off so that's this was abandoned before the other side of this wall and here's where I said the C was oh that thing is that what they were worried about yeah they were that's the thing they were worried about there's I'm not worried about on that I am not worried about that yeah that's by a door that's like literally for the hospital yeah that's nothing yeah this area seems just as a abandon is the other part I don't know not even any power yeah I don't know what he was talking about dental Department here's an x-ray Shield it is um check these rooms for an x-ray machine or a dental chair empty they look pretty empty though empty I think that might have come from somewhere else chairs are gone yeah these are not x-ray rooms this would have been the dentist's office you could see where the chair was and there's a there's a smile on the wall That's sealed but we're in the Breezeway now so we are in the H shaped building now light here okay okay here's stuff here's a dental chair or something this is just storage they put in here but there is stuff yeah this was the main lobby but they have kitchen stuff in here now there's x-ray stuff in here too some art yeah they definitely just moved this year from the dental yeah look there's an x-ray machine right there like taking off the wall jeez there's like a dishwasher machine I think it's a dishwasher shoved right there so weird get here this is the X-ray table Yeah an elevator another one of these exam tables all the stuff in here is just randomly place I don't know getting closer to the source of that alarm oh it's definitely in [Music] here that's a motion sensor yeah well that's a motion sensor yeah lighting up it's not lighting off it did look yeah whatever it doesn't matter yeah whatever going off where's the be here I didn't see anything in here sounds like it's this room there's the box right there oh it's in the [Music] corner probably yeah it's that box well that was going off before we got here so I'm not that concerned very similar stairwell to the other building yeah oh there's a car pulled up right to this building nice where right at the gate that's a little weird isn't it dock we're just facing the building yeah can we waddle over what's to the right I it's dock I they I think they can see us if they're looking for us okay oh he's out of his car car what he's out of his car he got in the car yeah cuz he got out of the car there's more cars parked down there there's a silver car right there I don't think it's anything to worry about unless they're trying to surround us no if we go to the left left we can maybe get a better view on him like down the hallway if these aren't locked there this is open oh we can get a side view on this guy he's gone okay cool it's a thick door it's not really padded but this is definitely some kind of a seclusion room yeah it's not soft but I guess it's softer than like a normal wall yeah there is a slight bit of give to it yeah you've got the mirror in the corner too just like the other seclusion room we've [Music] seen even the floor is the same material hiding in a corner and there's [Music] no seams in the wall completely sealed in here it's probably a speaker on the ceiling no door knob on the inside these are more seclusion rooms they look identical we're on the yellow floor now I think it's like the fourth floor or something not much in here but we did find these nice desks very mid-century it's like an acupuncture oh there's a stretcher that's cool yeah I'm glad we came in this here well [Music] F's going January 2016 this building was used somewhat recently so padded room called the quiet room you can see the padded floor is coming up from moisture I think [Music] originally there were high hopes that the complex would be redeveloped with an approved proposal to convert the buildings into a hotel and Business Center unfortunately as we're long past the estimated development time frame and no progress was made it looks increasingly more likely that plans fell through recently the complex has seen waves of vandals and Scrappers and the electrical service has been fully disconnected the buildings have seen more damage and Decay within the past year than the previous 6 years combined currently there are no further updates on the future of the buildings [Music]
