[Music] open your Bibles again with me to Psalm number 23 we are taking a walk through Psalm 23 and last Sunday we talked about the Lord this Sunday I want to look at the next three words in that line is my shepherd thank you you may be seated the Lord is my shepherd we humans we members of lily Grove love to do things our way forget the easy way forget the common way forget the best way forget the right way forget God's Way we want to do things our way Isaiah chapter 53 and verse number 6 says all we like sheep have gone astray and we have turned everyone to his own way you would not know this unless you were a golfer as great as myself but the 1999 British Open was played in carnist a Scotland and that was a player of Frenchmen by the name of Jean Van de Velde who went into Sunday the last day of the tournament with a seven stroke Lee he was leading by seven strokes all he had to do was double bogey make a six and he would win the tournament it doesn't mean anything to you if you're not a golfer but indulge me he was on their way to the biggest payday of his life he was on his way to being exempted he could play in all of the of the major tournaments by winning the British Open all he had to do was get a 5-iron out of his bag hit it in the middle of the fairway take a wedge to the green putt for birdie if he misses his birdie make a par if he misses his par make a bogey if he misses the ball get make a double bogey and still win the tournament but John Van de Velde like many of us had to do it his way so he takes the driver and he hits a driver almost to the Eiffel Tower in Paris it goes way out of bounds lines up in the tall grass and in the tall grass is he's 240 yards away from the green take a wedge get out hit it right in the middle where you can hit it again but he had to do it his way he takes a two iron and he hits a two iron and the two iron hits the stands bounces off the railing of the stands and goes into some more tall grass he hits it out of the tall grass into the water he takes a drop out of the water and hits it in the sand then he finally gets it on the fairway on the green and he putts for a seven and he's even with the person who's second they go into a sudden-death playoff and he loses the playoff I don't even remember who won the tournament but I do remember who came in second place because he lost because he had to do it his way that's just like us Lily grow all you needed to do was apologize but you had to argue someone would help me treat you all you had to do was listen but you had to open your mouth and talk all you needed to do was be patient but you had to take control all you needed to do was give it to God but you tried to fix it yourself reason why God calls us sheep it's because sheep are not only dependent creatures sheep are also singularly unintelligent stupid dumb prone to wandering and unable to find their way to the sheepfold even when it's in plain sight sheep are defenseless they have no fangs they have no claws they can't bite you they can't outrun you that's why you never see sheep as a team mascot nobody names their team the st. Louis sheep nobody wants to be the Chicago sheep nobody really cares about being the Seattle sheep of the Minnesota sheep their Rams and bears and Seahawks and Vikings because nobody wants to follow after a sheep sheep are not only defenseless and dependent but they're dirty as much as I hate cats they can clean themselves dogs can clean themselves bears get in the river and clean themselves birds even getting the bird baths and clean themselves but sheep get dirty and stay that way I wonder sometimes why didn't David use another metaphor why couldn't David have used a better metaphor God the Lord is my commander-in-chief or the Lord is my inspiration or the Lord is my king David was all of those things he was commander in chief he was an inspiration he was a king but David was remembering how he took care of his sheep and paid attention to his father's sheep both night and day how he slept with them and watched over them and he remembered all of their names and when he's thought about the characteristics of a shepherd he said the Lord is not my commander-in-chief the Lord is not my inspiration the Lord is not my king the Lord is my shepherd I need a shepherd because I'm dependent I need a shepherd because I'm dating I need a shepherd because I'm defenseless the Lord is my shepherd is the Lord is is is is is the dialectical present tense first-person singular of the verb to be dialectical present-tense first person singular of the verb to be which literally translates the Lord be being my shepherd you wanna ask the Lord what he be being he just be being my shepherd when I'm dead he'd be being my shepherd when I'm defenseless he just be being my shepherd when I'm all alone when I'm by myself when I'm sick when I'm guilty he just be being my shepherd I wish I had somebody here this morning who needs somebody to just be being your Shepherd when you feel their day when you feel defenseless when you feel dependent you don't have to depend on anybody else the Lord is my shepherd David David could have used some other personal pronouns he could have said the Lord is our Shepherd he could have said the Lord is their shepherd he could have even said the Lord is your Shepherd those are all personal pronoun David doesn't even use a definite article before Shepherd because it is not enough to say the Lord is a shepherd but that only equates him with all of the other religious leaders of the world it's not enough to own him as V Shepherd for that simply it sets him apart from everybody else we must be able to say the Lord is my shepherd that makes him person I need two or three witnesses here who know that the Lord is your Shepherd and I'm shouting about that the Lord's been good to you and I praise him for that the Lord has made a way for you and I'm grateful for that the Lord has opened the door for you and I thank him for that the Lord has saved you and I give him the glory for that but that ain't got nothing to do with why I praise it I don't praise him for you I praise him for me because he is my shepherd my God my protection my provider my way maker he is my chef that's personal that's personal to me that's that's personal to me because because all of us need to know him in a personal relationship I've moved away from from trying to get folk to say him in and give God worship and praise in church I moved away from that because if he's not your shepherd if he's not your God if he's not your provider if he's not your protector there's nothing I can do to get you to give him glory I can holler till I'm blue in the face I can sweat until my claws are wringing wet if he's not your Shepherd if he's not your guide if he's not your keeper if he's not your provider nothing I say nothing acquire does nothing the devotion does nothing will leave you because you don't even know who we're talking about but if you have your own relationship if he's your personal guide if he's your shepherd if he walks with you if he pursued a bird at night if he wakes you up in the morning if he is your pals you don't need no preacher to tell you to give him glory [Applause] nobody gotta cooks you and pride you and push you and tell you to give God an amen if God is your guy God is your protector if God is your Shepherd that's person he walks with me he talks with me he saved me he made a wave from me he opened doors for me He healed me he showed up to rescue me he put food on my table he made a way out of no way for me he's been a mother for me he's been a father for me he's better sane for me that's that's that's person that's person and when God is your Shepherd when God is your guide when God takes care of you he gives you that spirit to take care of somebody else if you're not a loving person it's probably because you don't know God for yourself if you're not a caring person if you're not a alluring person it's probably because you don't have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ anybody who knows Jesus Christ can sit in the worship and not smile and somebody if you know God for yourself it's hard to hate the you're sitting next to he gives you his spirit he helps you to be a blessing to somebody else you go help me preach this won't you during during Hurricane Katrina some people stayed in my house six women stayed in my home old women not not not no not [Applause] Haeju bull women senior citizen I couldn't handle no six young women in my house and they they called and said that they won't away and I told him to come on and they came on down mrs. Dunn and mrs. Clark and their two daughters six of them came and stayed at my house until almost December and they were getting ready to leave and mrs. Clark and her two daughters and mrs. Dunn's daughters had already packed up they were they were doing other things they were away from the house in gallery or someplace doing something else and only mrs. Dunn and I were in the den and she called me to where she was she couldn't get in any of the beds at my house because my bed was too high I offered it to her it was too high for her to get in and she couldn't walk upstairs because she had congestive congestive heart failure and she slept in my recliner in the den and everybody was gone nobody was in the house but me and mrs. Dunn and she said Terry come here a minute I want to tell you something she put both our hands on my shoulders facing me with both of our hands on my shoulder and she said Terry I want to tell you something she said me and my daughter's and precious and her daughters called you and told you we were on the way and you said come on she said everything I own in this world is 8 feet underwater all my minks all of my shoes all of my bags all of my presses everything I own is gone she said we called you and you told us to come on she said we were hungry and you fed us we were outdoors and you took us in she said I want to thank you for that you didn't have to do it you shepherded us when we were outdoors she said with our hands on my shoulder she said I'm probably gonna get to heaven before you I'm gonna see my husband and I'm gonna see your mother and father but she said more than that I'm gonna see Jesus and I'm gonna tell him how you treated me I was hungry and you fed me I was outdoors and you took me in if God has been a shepherd to you you ought to be a shepherd to somebody else if God took you in you ought to take somebody else in if God made a way for you you ought to have lesser of somebody else but you got to have a personal relationship the Lord is that's person not only is it personal to me it's precious I'm not gonna let anybody get in between me and my relationship with God that relationship is the most precious relationship that I have somehow thought helped me appreciate we can we can fuss and fight Monday through Saturday but Sunday morning I am aired with nobody I don't want to cuss on everybody on Sunday morning I don't want to fight with nobody on Sunday morning cuz on Sunday morning I need mercy I need God to hear my players I need God to answer me and deliver me out of my distress is that relationship is so precious that I can't let you make me mad enough to lose my witness to ruin my testimony that that relationship is as precious as a father with a child again you got to be a parent to help me shout right here you got to have a child of your own to help you shout right here because sometimes your children disappoint you sometimes your children act in a way that you didn't raise them somehow don't help me preach it only focus out here has got some children who has broken your heart once or twice who has disappointed you who is who has acted away and you told them over and over and over and over and over don't do it because you're gonna get in trouble and they do it anyway and they disappoint you but when you are a parent in spite of your disappointment wherever they are you go find them whatever they do and you spend your last dime because you love them just that much my daughter my daughter said to me on one occasion daddy I didn't I didn't tell you so and so because I didn't want you to be disappointed and look at me differently and I said to her if you had committed triple murder I'd be trying to sell my house get rid of my cars to come to your rescue because there's nothing you can do let's go ever stop me from loving you I wish I had somebody to help me no lie you can tell no crime you can commit no sin no offense will ever stop me from loving you because you are flesh or muffling bone of my bone if I feel that way about my child what do you think my heavenly father feels about his children Lord is my shut up he's always on my side he's always coming to my defense he's always preparing a table before me he's always making me lie down beside green pastures he's always leading me beside the still waters he's always restoring my soul he'd always leading me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake he's always anointing my head with oil my cup is always running over when you know him for yourself when he's your Shepherd you've got a personal relationship with him and a precious relationship with him it don't have to be Sunday morning you don't even have to be at an integral just be in the office or just riding in the car sitting down watching television in the den or going through your clothes in the closet looking at how many shoes you got stacked up from the floor on up to the wall and going in the pantry and deciding what you're gonna cook open the refrigerator and you got more than you can eat God's just being your Shepherd God's just been your provider have a got a witness here and pretty soon some of us are gonna learn how to praise God not just for food but for an appetite because the day may come when you have food but you don't have an appetite but thank God for everything because that's my shop there's nothing I need to say it again one more time don't do it now cuz they're gonna be looking at you but but next Sunday if you can think about it get you a little post-it note get you a little sticky note or or make it 3 by 5 or or or 11 by 8 and put it by your seat here at the church and right on there in big red letters disclaimer if you're gonna sit by me I need you to know something if you're gonna get on this road you need to know ahead of time it's gonna be noisy it's gonna be loud my hands just I can't help myself I gotta give God glory I gotta give God my best praise I got to get my praise on I got to holler and tell God thank you cuz I've been through too much God has answered too many prayers God has opened too many doors for me to sit down and act like I don't know who Reverend Anderson is talking about let the redeemed say so if God here don't body say so if God made a way out of no way say so if God got your child out of Chapel say so that's person I'm here this morning with some personal pre because God has done some stuff for me that you don't know nothing about me and God has talked about some things that I can't talk about but nobody else have a kind of witness here God knows some things about me that I hope will never come out but he loves me so much he keeps all my secret he forgives all my sins he heals all of my diseases he satisfies my mouth with good things have I got a witness here like the heart patted after the water Brooks so planted my soul after the old God and brothers and sisters sometimes people don't understand you'll praise that's why they can't get with you when you start praising God because they don't know what God has done for you but I don't care if you understand my praise it doesn't bother me that you looking at me like something's wrong with me I lose my dignity when I come in God's presence I lose my pretense of self-importance when I come in the Lord's presence I don't care if you think I'm unsophisticated [Applause] because my relationship with God is precious and it's personal and sometimes I just lose my dignity you remember when David found the Ark of the Covenant I wish I had a Bible reader and they were on their way back to the temple and David started musing over how good God had been to how God delivered him from the paw of a lion and the paw of a bear how and Goliath was hurling insults in the valley of gasps he took five stones and killed that giant Goliath someone order helped me here when Saul was trying to kill him and God hit him in a cave and God just delivered him and and David was able to write many but the Psalms because of how God had protected him the Lord is my light and my salvation David Ruthie whom shall I fear the Lord is the strength of my life of whom shall I be afraid when the wicked even my enemies and my foes came upon me to eat up my flesh just before they got to me they stumbled and they fell one thing half our desire of the Lord and that will I seek after let me dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life for in the time of trouble he shall hide me wait on the Lord be of good courage he will strengthen your heart wait I say on the Lord then David thought about how many prayers God had answered he said I've been young but now I'm old and I've never seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging bread then he thought about when Nathan came to his house after he had sinned with Bathsheba and God had uncovered his sin he said have mercy on me O God according to your loving-kindness according to the multitude of your tender mercy blot out all my transgressions create in me a clean heart yeah you know it and renew within me the right spirit the reason you know it because you had to pray that prayer some time didn't David thought about when he was on his way to the temple after they got the ark straight on the cart because it failed and also tried to put it back and God struck him dead on the spot and then he was on his way into the temple and he thought about God just having mercy on him he said lift up your head o ye gates and be lifted up ye everlasting doors and the King of glory shall come in who is this king of glory the Lord strong and mighty the Lord mighty in the battle and when their ark was almost in the temple David started dancing and praising God and the Bible says he danced all out of his clothes and his wife misha l said you ought to be ashamed of yourself disgracing yourself before the Lord acting like a fool before the Lord David said you think I'm acting a fool right now you ought to be there when I get in the Lord's presence and you ought to tell somebody this morning you think I'm shouting right now you think I'm acting a fool right now come with me to my child's graduation you see me actin a fool over there come with me when I pick up my mama at the hospital you see me acting a fool over there come see me after God answers my prayers you Cologne an integral if you see somebody acting like they don't have good sense because the Lord's been good to me is there anybody here know the Lord's been good to you is there anybody here know the Lord is your Shepherd not only is that personal not only is that precious but that is also profound and the reason is profound you got to come on Whitman away from Psalm 23 and come on to Psalm 22 because in Psalm 23 the Lord is a shepherd but in Psalm 22 the shepherd becomes a lamb that takes away the sins of the world I don't think I got that over to you is my shepherd but he couldn't save me as a shepherd he couldn't redeem me as a shepherd in order to save me he had to become a lamb notice I didn't say a sheep because a lamb is more defenseless than a sheep he had to become a lamb because when he came to be baptized John the Baptist said behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world you're gonna help me close this watching in order for you to shout right now you gotta jump over to the book of the revelation and in the book of the revelation he's a lamb slain from the foundation of the world because the elder had a book in his hand written with seven seals sealed within and without and nobody was found worthy to open the book and to read their own and John said I wept because nobody was worthy to take the book out of his hand and to break those seven seals but John said I saw a lamb I wish I had a witness I saw a lamb slain from the foundation of the world he took the book out of his hand and he broke those seals in his hand and when he broke the first seal that was a Red Horse and when he broke the second seal that was a pale horse and when he broke the fourth seal that was a right horse when he broke the fourth seal there was a black horse when he broke the fifth seal that was silence in heaven for about the space of a half an hour because we have a lamb slain from the foundation of the world is there anybody here know who I'm talking about I'm not talking about a shepherd there the Lord is Shepard but I thank God he is my lamb because one Friday he was led like a lamb to the slaughter and like a sheep done before he see us he died didn't he die he died on an old rugged cross but early Sunday morning early Sunday morning he got up from the grave with all power in here the hand thank God this morning I have a shepherd but I thank God this morning I have a lamb we bad for my sin if God is your Shepherd and you're not ashamed to testify if God brought you out and you don't care who's looking at you if God made a way and you don't care what they say about you why don't you grab somebody Roberts your hug somebody tell them the law is the law is the law is [Applause] hallelujah you don't mind if I shout a minute do you hallelujah when I see Jesus i'ma tell her about my trouble but when I see Jesus i'ma tell him thank you for being my shepherd thank you for being my god thank you for being my protection thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you Jesus thank you Jesus you brought me come on my little way thank you so are you've done so thank you but the door is you open thank you thank you all right thank you shake somebody's hand grab your neighbor tell him I love to praise the Lord I love the tear gas thank you I've know he's all right [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] yes is my shepherd the Lord Jehovah Jireh say Hoover rohi jehova shamma jehova sitka new Jehovah M Kadesh Jehovah El Elyon the Lord is dialectical present-tense first person singular of the verb to be the Lord bee being my ship [Applause] everything I need the Lord just be being everything I have to have he just be being when I'm hungry he'd be being food but I'm thirsty being water when I'm hungry and tired and sick and alone he'd be being my shepherd [Applause] [Music]
