Twilight night asks if I still have Jaime's hat that I shot with a shotgun during The MythBusters episode shooting a hand grenade out of the air yes I have that hat it was non-trivial to get it from Jamie um first of all this episode one of the most fun episodes we ever filmed on MythBusters um the question is if you have a shotgun and someone has pulled the pin on a grenade and thrown it at you is shooting it out of the air viable and the answer is oh yeah to totally give it a shot pun intended um the fact is that if you are skate shooting something flying towards you is absolutely the easiest thing to shoot because it's coming in a line and you really you can dial it in and pull the trigger when it's time and um we started producing that episode we started the pre-production of the episode and of course the first thing we said to uh uh uh the producer on it was find us a grenade we we want to we want to open this episode holding a grenade pull the pen throw it watching it blow up this is like it's narrative 101 you set the terms of the narrative and if it's a narrative about grenades you show one right up front or so we thought um over the years of making MythBusters we used tens of thousands of pounds of explosives and it was almost all for free um we we we we would go to the bomb squad primarily County Sheriff's department but also Matsu Alaska and others around the country and the world and we would say listen we want to do this thing we're going to blow up the safe with C4 and they would Supply us the C4 because you can't you can't buy C4 and there's no permit you can get that you can use it you can only be present when C4 is being used by a bomb squad as a training exercise now that sounds like a sort of ha tongue and cheek workaround for the law but the fact is actually that that is not true every bomb squad is a bunch of contingency planners trying to figure out how to deal with stuff they've never encountered before and consequently the Alam County Sheriff's bomb squad is one of the most experienced in the world because of the 15 years of crap MythBusters threw at them um they have learned all sorts of crazy things and we've done things they didn't know how it would turn out now they know how it turned out um so we like I said we used thousands of rounds of explosives it was always given us to for always given to us for free it was always always easy to get explosives but not grenades um every every every single Avenue we chase down for a grenade no no no and no ultimately we never got a Grenade um you saw a grenade blow up in that episode and that's because we bought an inert grenade from which the blasting cap and the powder had been removed and then we filled it back full of C4 and a blasting cap and we blew up that cuz that was okay but we weren't allowed to pull the pin on one um so here we are shooting this episode uh will a grenade thrown towards you can it be shot out of the air and then we need to practice and so uh we decided to practice with water balloons and Jamie built this the most wonderful mortar which is a piece of PVC tube with an air tank behind it and a little pneumatic valve and we loaded uh water balloons that were the same weight as a grenade and we put them in the back and we you know put it at an angle and it would shoot out the water balloon towards us with the shotgun and again super super fun we Ed colored paint I mean JB and I got good enough at ski shooting something coming towards you which again is not hard to get good at um until I I shot one really close to me until I was covered with paint like that was really fun um oh right uh but the thing was was that this when you put a water balloon in a numat in a in a PVC tube that's about 2 fet long and you fire it with air it makes this sound coming out of the barrel that is like the funniest thing that any of us on crew ever heard that day it was Jamie you if you're a fan of the subreddit contagious laughter I want to describe to you like when Jamie Hinman would find something hilarious and iterate it and keep on doing it and he'd get redder and redder as he laughed and like Jamie having a great time is a particularly hilarious thing to to witness um so we're out there we we learned how to ski shoot we went out to this location we're shooting we're doing all sorts of scenarios and then Jamie was like if I throw out my hat and you hit it if I throw my hat from behind a building and you don't know when it's coming but you hit it with a shotgun you can have it he said that on camera then he threw his hat I shot it and he was like he didn't give it to me and then I asked him for it a few weeks later and he didn't say I'm not going to give you my hat but I still didn't get the hat and years later years later someone asked about it on stage Jamie and I were doing a Q&A as part of our science tour and someone asked about it and I said I've never gotten that hat from Jamie and Jamie said something like I don't remember saying that I was going to give it to you and the entire audience about 3,000 people corrected Jamie I can't even tell you how satisfying that was as a person to have an auditorium full of people confirm my experience and when we got back to San Francisco he gave me the hat so I do still have Jim's shotgun shot Beret and it like this was this was not like a beret he pulled out of storage this was his regular day wearing Beret so it is like 60% Jamie Hinman skin cells we could clone an Army of Jamies from this hat even today oh you're welcome for that image everybody mix Darwin life says what advice would you give for someone about to take up airbrushing for the first time buy a cheap airbrush you can learn most of what you need to know with a crappy airbrush that's my first thing secondly um you got to learn the the the painting overlap so the painting overlap goes like this uh you spray down a line and you spray following a path like this and the spray kind of fills that path like this right now you let's say you want to you want to fill this card the next line you paint isn't here it's like here your goal is to kind of overlap the edge of each line that you've painted each time you're going down and when you do that you'll get a really nice amount of overlap now often times if I'm filling a whole space I'll go from top to bottom and I'll come back and go back to the top and do top to bottom again um that's just really good to practice to get nice even coats now the reason you're buying an airbrush is not often to get even coats it's often to do detailing coats um and in that regard uh one of the primary things one can do do with an airbrush is ADD subtle weathering gradients to the edges of things like car doors and details on models and so for that I would say don't airbrush a model kit for your first airbrush go buy a kids toy buy something big and cheap that costs like five bucks from the Goodwill and airbrush and paint that mask it paint it use it as a platform for learning watch some YouTube channels and then use cheap toys to practice the techniques until you feel comfortable enough with them to execute on an actual miniature model um all that being said every time I fire up an airbrush I'm a little afraid like it has always held this air of mystery since I my the very first airbrush I ever handled and used was a intricate pernicky finicky theer and Chandler that my dad had for like Photo retouching this thing had this like the parts in this thing were ridiculous when you compare comp it to like a modern day iada or Posh um which are have been rendered incredibly simple machines and simple is better when you're running paint through it because they'll gum up really quickly um yeah that's my uh my tips for firsttime airbrusher uh uh Nathaniel Saltzman wants to know uh if I can recommend a conv vincing DIY material for stand as a standin for Ivory um I wanted to tell you I think it's here yeah so I found this I found this stuff called imitation Ivory uh I can't remember where I got it it is a urethane based resin and it's it's been made with a you can't see it on camera but it's got a grain to it it's actually quite lovely and I believe it polishes up to a high polish I was going to use this for the a handle of a stiletto knife I found a picture of from the 19th century that I thought was really really beautiful um and I thought oh I wonder if anyone makes synthetic Ivory Googling synthetic IV Ivory yielded this which was maybe 20 bucks in about five minutes um there's also animal horn works great as a natural material like that someone recently gave me some bison horn dice that are gorgeous they just look fantastic um there are there are some real bone things that you can buy that are sustainable and reasonable um working with bone is not pleasant it smells horrendous it's evolutionarily horrendous but um yeah so I can't speak to how good this synthetic Ivory is but the pictures on the website made me think it was U terrific and if I can find the place where I got this I'll include a link in the description but like I said Googling synthetic Ivory yielded it very quickly thank you for watching that video are you as sick of the tosses to membership as I am good because here's a brand new one that I recorded today and it's nice and short there are three tiers to tested membership and they all offer awesome stuff find out about it by clicking the join link below we'll see you there
