A New Animation System Is Coming!

[Music] so sometime November 2022 the fola blender Foundation presented an animation proposal titled the future of character animation for blender this was to address the stale state of Animation in blender as the last time there was a major update in regards to animation was back in 2009 for blender 2.5 and yes since then a lot has changed and it's time to review and Revis the animation branch of blender and this has given birth to blender animation 2025 which has since introduced a good number of principles that have been laid out for the new animation system with an interesting demo which has to do geometry node system to create procedural Rigs and today we have a glimpse of what the future of Animation would look like with a side quest project called project back laava so why this name well everyone enjoys baklava as it consists of two ingredients which deals with layers and deliciousness and with deliciousness the folks are blender Foundation actually mean multi ID animation and with these two layers and multi ID they are set to form the pillars of the new animation system and as much as this is a side quest project this is a major new feature project which would be similar to non-destructive animation system like Maya 33 Max and motion Builder as it is planned to replace the existing action block as a major animation container in blender making it possible to have multi characters and props animated from the same animation data block rather than relying on individual actions and as they've mentioned in the blog post that we want to be able to keep animation of related characters and object together in one animation data block and this should include those constraints that are specific to the shot and this is quite interesting because as much as the rigging noes are coming having this entire layering system would save a lot of time and for those who are wondering how layers actually work for animation this is basically how it works so with Mya simply opened right here we can go ahead and animate this Cube traveling from one point to another now if we like to make alterations to this we can simply throw in several layers and make alterations and we can watch this animation change over time based of the layers and this is more like what they're trying to do although from the snippet that they have here the design looks slightly different if we take a look at the markup for project back lava you can notice that we have layers the mix mode and inflence so influence should actually control how much influence that layer has towards the overall animation and I also believe that the mix mode is more like the adictive replace and also offset so that should also control if you like to replace the entire motion that is related to whatever object you're animating or if you would like to Simply offset that based off the key frame and hopefully all of these would make sense when it is finally available and for sure if you're thinking about blender animation layers there is actually one that you can get of blender market right now which is pretty cool but then if project backover finally makes it to blender this would be a very welcome development although they are setting steps that the folks at blender Foundation are also looking at that is tied to what you have with Maya making it possible to key things is definitely one thing which I would like to see as in Maya as well you can also key the layers if you want there's also plans for showing the animation in the dope sheet and graph editor and there's a multi ID and no layers yet some further steps includes migrating these tools having a new editor for layered animation tools for maging and splitting which I think would be really cool and also tools for baking there's also some plans for making these things manageable and for when you can test this they're looking at integrating this as an experimental feature in the Q2 of 2024 for blender so hopefully we will have our hands on this when this mix it to the experimental branch of blender sometime in the second quarter of 2024 more so there's a couple of other things that they looking at which includes creating rigging noes which will keep the shot dependent constraints with the animation data for that shot there's also the bone picker system so that animators can work faster with less clutter and there are a few more ideas that they're looking at exploring as include the multi-res post per rig the custom bone axis editable motion path which would definitely be super cool to have as this is something that always existed in Maya having ghosting that are super editable animation retargeting tools dense animation workflow motion capture Wranglers and so on so all of these are ideas and plans that they have for 2025 although there's still a few things that they've been putting together to Simply make blender better before then which are pretty good and for those who
