but this is one instance where I'm gonna stand there and be like if you didn't like fallout 4 that's great if you like fallout 4 that's great but to call it a bad game is honestly disrespectful not only its fallout 4 a bad game it's an objectively bad game that's a pretty harsh way to start this but I have my reasons for it when you say something is bad most people will respond with well it's art it's subjective it's just your opinion that it's bad which is true in most cases but I believe there's an argument to be made for the fact that something can be objectively bad particularly with storytelling books movies games any of them can be objectively bad if they're poorly written namely plot holes taking the definition from Wikipedia in fiction a plot hole is a gap or inconsistency in a storyline that goes against the flow of logic established by the story's plot such an consistencies includes such things as illogical or impossible events and statements or events that contradict earlier events in the storyline there are countless plot holes across all storytelling media but that does not necessarily mean that a plot hole will make a piece of media bad for example one of my favorite movies is the Shawshank Redemption and it has a plot hole listed when the warden comes into the cell the morning after the escape the poster covering the holes fastened down on all four corners impossible to do after squeezing into that small hole and apparently in the commentary the director himself confirms that this was an error but it's still a good movie essentially it was just one little logical inconsistency that happens in an overall great movie the more plot holes there are in a story the more significant issue becomes however and that's what I'm here to talk about today with fallout 4 a game so absolutely flooded with plot holes and errors and insane nonsensical [ __ ] that it drags the entire experience down now not everything I talked about in this series is necessarily going to be objective plot holes there is subjectivity in this video of my own opinions on how followed as a franchise has been treated by Bethesda in addition to what I was saying about plot holes and storytelling media being objectively bad I don't think you could say something is good just because it's successful the quality of a piece of media and its success are two different things look at many modern horror movies for examples of this there are plenty of instances of plot holes or characters acting completely stupid just look at how many jokes are made about stupid horror movie characters and yet a lot of these movies are still successful somehow anyways before getting into the meat of this analysis I had a couple other points - making a quick spoiler warning as this is an in-depth look at fallout 4 this video will obviously contain spoilers for fallout 4 as well as fallout 1 2 3 and new Vegas and there might be spoilers for Morrowind oblivion and Skyrim as well also I think it's worth being upfront about I'm gonna be playing the game just for the sake of honesty my first playthrough it's legitimate for the most part I use 0 cheats and only lay into the game - I use exploits to give myself resources for my settlement building because collecting them manually they're waiting for vendors to restock was so mind-numbing ly tedious I want to blow my [ __ ] brains out the following 3 playthroughs I use cheats to level up and for god mode as these will not affect the story in any way I know some people might have a problem with this I honestly see no point of playing the entire game over again I got my fill of it the first time I will also use some random clips from some side save files whether I use cheats on them or not it's kind of variable the main point here is the fact that the majority of actual gameplay will be without cheats on the ones I do use cheats it's purely to reach a story content now the footage will contain mods without being mentioned I've written and rewritten and strapped it started over with the script a number of times trying to figure it the best way to handle this analysis to make it as clear and cohesive as possible I figure the best way is to just start to begin with the intro and opening section and then focus on the first half of the main story followed by the faction paths then the ending to the main story after that I'll just hit each point outside the main story such as RPG mechanics luring consistencies settlement building and everything else I feel a good time to talk about them would be and trust me I'll be going into you as much as I could possibly handle here that said there's still maybe some things I miss I can't possibly find every single terminal or piece of dialogue in this game now that I've got this intro of the way it's time to tackle fallout 4 itself [Music] war war never changes [Music] the issues start right away with the intro this first part subjective and a personal complaint of mine let's make sure my feelings on this but Ron Perlman shouldn't have been dropped as a narrator folk good reason he's been the intro narrator since the very beginning of Fallout war war never changes it's almost like a tradition at this point even fallout 3 despite its many countless glaring issues and seeming disregard for Fallout kept this tradition true now I understand he won't be able in their rate fallouts intros forever but they still had him voice of character in the game it's not like he was unavailable or too expensive they had a record lines for the game anyways this would be like having a main line Star Wars movie without the iconic intro music [Music] the other issue at the intro is the fact that it's a playable male character Nate who's narrating it as a result a couple issues arise first of all this automatically puts an inflection on to the character you play as if you decide to play the male character it gives tone of personality to who he is without letting the player have a choice the strength of a silent protagonist as in the previous games as well as other series it's a fact that not only allows people to project themselves onto their game character but for the people who like role-playing with their role playing games allows them to craft any kind of character they can imagine and play within the rules they've defined for that character the self play can add a lot of enjoyment to the game for the people who play this way you cannot play this way in Fallout 4 because fallout 4 establishes who you are for you and I'm afraid [Music] for myself for my wife for my infant son because of my time in the Army taught me one thing [Music] instead of war war never changes its habits for both the playable characters Nate and Nora but it's more severe with Nate because in the intro he tells you some of his family history as well as some of his personal history he tells him he fears for his family's safety as if he's read the script of this game and notice the world is about 10 minutes away from nuclear devastation he tells you he's a veteran and fought in a war if you decide to play as a male character aka Nate regardless of whatever name you give them you can only ever be a veteran that seen combat and cares deeply for his family you can't be anything else Nora is a little easier to build your own backstory for that's just because her backstory is informative at you in a cutscene but still there regardless secondly if you do decide to play as a female character there's something of a disconnect from what the narrator is saying because the narrator is a character instead of just being the narrator not to be confused with a voice actor voicing narration and the character and this is a character we spend all five minutes with and we don't know long enough to really care about the intro being given by this character loses a good deal of its impact the intention of Nate narrating the intro is to tell you what he thinks in feels to try to put you in his shoes for when you play as him he fears for his family's safety only the parents leave watch his wife get murdered and his child kidnapped his fears are realized but when you play as Nora his fears don't get realized by him because he dies now you've done an intro given to you by a character you have no real reason to care about but your character does these aren't games where you play as a character written for you these are supposed to be games for you create the character written by you a neutral narration voice is important in this situation because the narration in the context of these games exists to fill you in on the history of the world and is kept separate from any actual characters in game especially your own to allow you a canvas to build your character not to tell you the history of the role and tell you who your character might be depending on which one you decide to play as and follow it one Ron Perlman doesn't say the world got Newt - [ __ ] and also I'm the overseer and we're all going to die if you don't get the water chip in Fallout 2 Ron Perlman doesn't say resource was tight and we nuke each other because of it by the way our [ __ ] village is dying and you need to find a ghek and fallout 3 Ron Perlman doesn't say the outside world is irradiated and no one ever enters or leaves to fall by the way I'm your [ __ ] father and I left the vault come find me the neutral narration voice tells you the history a non-player character presents your goals and gives the urgency to the situation and you are presented with a canvas fallout 4s intro failed some moment you hear the voice because it either builds up a character that ruins any chance for you to build your own backstory or it builds up a character that dies five minutes into the game and is never seen again what's worse is they don't even do anything interesting with the backstory they do give you it's just there for some reason this whole issue it's too pounded by the fact that reaching the end of the main story playing as Nora your end slideshow is narrated by her so now you've got the story that's weirdly opened up and finished by two different narrators and characters when the whole thing is built to be a personal story because of my time in the Army taught me one thing [Music] instead of war war never changes I can feel it wash over me the heat the force radiation the fear it's the end of the world all over again I closed my eyes I see my life before all of this before the bombs I'll talk more about your lack of ability to decide who your character is later when I talk about the dialogue system and as a result the voice protagonists go a way with the voice of the opening air of the way and considering how negative most of us will be I should say something positive at least visually the opening cutscene looks great and I actually think it's a really interesting idea to start a Fallout game before the war so we can get a glimpse into the world before it became the wasteland we all know now the narrative of being a pre-war citizen could also be really interesting and having to either adapt to or embrace the morality of the post-apocalyptic wasteland but I don't believe Bethesda handled either of these things well besides the reasons I've already mentioned it's the fact that clicking on objects in your house makes her character sound like someone acting in a commercial nobody talks like this nuka-cola i scull saddle up sounds pretty steak grated eight-plus mm-hmm I sure do love me some brand name Oreos there's a right jab at the Christmas of the fallout 3 being full centuries-old food that is still edible insta mash fancy lad snack cakes blam Co mac and cheese expires in never besides that you don't get to experience much of this pre-war world your heart locked into this house until you have to flee for the vault you can't go anywhere but towards the vault now I don't expect with us to make an entire pre-war version of the map that'd be insane but seeing just a little more the pre-new 2 world would have been nice also everything about this presentation of the world before the new struct seems a little too perfect yes we know it's October 23rd 2077 and we know for a fact that nukes dropped on this day but everything about the small section of the world are presented with aka your tiny [ __ ] house seems like a stereotypical setup for a sucker punch oh look how perfect an idyllic my life is I've got a nice house and a nice neighborhood beautiful wife and baby life couldn't be more perfect la-dee-da I sure hope nothing happens to ruinous it's like in a bad TV show where a background character is certainly given a backstory it gets a lot camera time before dying that's character no one gave a [ __ ] about so only has a story that was cheaply thrown on five minutes before they died now you've got to care about them fallout 4 our treats to pre-war worlds just like this there's hardly a hint of the world being as bad as described it's like we're looking at slice of some other world here and the interest in a macro shown people charging at the fences of a power plant and why I can only assume as desperation as if they expect to just be able to loot energy from the place there's a war going on Nate himself fought in the war but no forget about all that look at how perfectly peaceful sanctuary Hills is and your life is I don't expect riots outside your house but this just seems really strangely presented it's hard to take a game seriously when it feels like you're playing a caricature in a dopey cartoon world [Music] your perfect life is suddenly interrupted by salesmen who couldn't have more convenient timing if he tried let's fight these games being about choice but this apparently doesn't care about that go a way you cannot tell this guy to go away no matter what yes I understand you need to be approved to enter the vault those who've been handled in so many different ways it would have worked better seriously anything will have been better than this have the confirmation papers somewhere in the house or have it brought in conversation with your significant other it could be on the coffee table on the fridge in the mailbox but no it just so happens you have the absurdly and immediately convenient timing of signing up for the vault three minutes before the bombs drop gee whiz that sure is lucky and why can't you tell him the [ __ ] off even if it's a simple choice the player should have that option the newscast talks about the bombs dropping your character goes oh [ __ ] maybe we should try the vault anyways and the representative is there with the checklist and allows you in at the last second I mean for [ __ ] sake the act of signing up for the vault and actually getting there early a couple minutes apart it's not like the paperwork was processed by the guys at the gate and the vault tech employees inside the vault in that short span of time and I realized this is private character creation where you choose your special and your character's name like if represented in a different manner confirmation papers on the table your character can look them over you the player get the name and special prompt and modify those as you please and when you're done your character says yeah everything seems to be in order it gives the same result without the immediate convenience of the current way it's done that's much more believable not to mention better writing to have been approved weeks ago rather than to sign up literally a minute before the newscast reports the bombs are dropping we get a brief moment with this plot device before being called to the living room by our robot the unthinkable what's happened the bombs are dropping we've got to escape to the vault our front door magically opens and we get to leave our house for the first time there isn't anything to do here except to run to the vault if you try to go elsewhere you either get dead ends or the bombs will just drop and kill you we see the vault tech representative tried to get through the fence only to be threatened and he runs off I sure do hope he wasn't so concerned over his own life that he forgot to give them our paperwork oh wait no it's fine never mind so we run up the hill to find a platform that will lure us into the vault and I've got to play about this too briefly I'm not saying every vault has to have the same kind of entrance but there's no way you could tell me this wasn't specifically designed so he could see the nuke going off in the distance we love you too hold on we just see it with our unshielded eyes and are lowered in as a shock wave reaches us now I'm not an expert in anything to do with anything nuclear but when at that shockwave have contained some radiation if the power of the bomb going off sent out a shock wave and the bomb is responsible for massive amounts of radiation when it radiation have traveled with the shock wave of the explosion I don't know this is just an assumption on my part again I'm not an expert on anything nuclear by any means if that is the case and Shawn would have been tainted by radiation making him useless for the Institute's purposes and on top of that I'm pretty sure we would be blind but [ __ ] logic apparently the rule of Kools more important the initial impression of a fault is handled pretty well for the most part I'd say so the fact that before release it was revealed you would be a pre-war citizen cryogenically frozen kind of routes attention here as you already know what's going to happen otherwise knowing what we do that fault tech that's killed been a really good set up for their deaths or deletion Anakin's every other game you've learned about what happened in a vault long after the fact here you're at their mercy it still handled fairly well and I'd say I'm generally okay with it the deception of the decontamination pods really being cryo pods was well done and I honestly believe if someone was both new to the series and didn't see the promotional material this would be a good setup for them to experience the sinister nature of vault-tec you're frozen only defied an indeterminate amount of time later this is the one here Oh [Music] [Music] the mercenary kilts her life looked into your pod saying we've still got the backup and leanness refreezing you if the parents are so important to them why can't they just trick your wife into handing over the baby there's plenty of spare volt suit since we see once we get control probably boxes full of them why was it's not an option for them hell this chick has already dressed like a doctor or something which might have been enough on its own these people are still traumatized from watching the nuclear Armageddon firsthand this could have been done in ways that don't involve murdering one of the two whole people are apparently important backups to your plan you thought it again at random and swear that you'll find your son you also find out that everyone else in the vault is just dead because reasons what I'm gonna have to come back to the specific issue later on anyways we make our way through the fault find the skeletons of the people who froze us earlier so it's obviously been a really long time since we were frozen and make our way to the elevator and this is the last chance to change any details about our character at least the details were allowed to Cheers so your appearance name and special as I've already explained your backstory is already poorly written for you and on top of that there are no skills and there are no traits I'll be talking about this as well later in fact get used to me saying that because there will be a lot of things out glossed over through the main story they'll have to come back to later simply to keep focus on the main story with final confirmation you're sent up to the surface and let loose in the world [Music] [Music] upon reaching a surface you more or less have the option of going anywhere you want but I already said I'd be focusing on the main story for now and this is also likely the first step someone would take on their first playthrough anyways you return to your home in sanctuary hills and find your robot is somehow still active and he tells you it's been 210 years since the bombs dropped he has you searched the immediate area of sanctuary hills in case your son and significant other are playing hide-and-seek within the ruins of your neighborhood which is ridiculous but you don't have a choice before we go any farther I should get this point hammered home right now the entire main story is on Rails I can only assume Bethesda wrote this story with a twist in mind and built everything else up around that and by god are they not going to let you go off the rails I have to find for you it's the only way the actual creation of this story makes any sense to me I can't for the life to me come to any other conclusion well this quest couldn't possibly spoil the twist in any way you're still forced to search sanctuary with codpiece even though you know for a fact or significant other is dead you can't tell codpiece no you can't pressure him to tell you more regardless there is no way around doing it's completely inane tasks for your robot sure you can just skip this part of the quests and head straight to Concord but no one is going to know this on their first time playing there is no other way to get the info to check Concord after searching sanctuary and not finding your son Cuffy suggests you tried the nearby town of Concord where he met people that attacked him great advice I don't know if this was changed or not but I seem to remember him saying people shot at him from my original playthrough in 2015 now he just says they hit him with sticks you arrived in Concord to the sounds of gunfire and without knowing anything about the situation you joined the fray and start killing people left and right well if this town was full settlers trying to rebuild and Preston's crew were a violent gang that got cornered by the townsfolk doesn't matter those since you just so happened to be killing nameless Raiders it's also a really good thing your gut instinct worked out this time it's also a really good thing that your character it's a paragon of virtue and didn't just join the Raiders so you meet preston garvey and his crew of rejects and they need help dealing with this Raider gang so they immediately trust you enough to tell you about a free suit of power armor on the roof complete with minigun so you can use them to wipe out the Raiders to add insult to injury here you actually do get the choice to tell them that you won't help them but the game actually [ __ ] updates your quest log anyways and points you at the power armor making the decision to say no entirely worthless so here's a deal that armors out of juice probably has been for a hundred years it can be powered up again but we're a bit stuck the answer's no I'm out just like that huh you come this far then condemn these poor people to die alright have it your way stay safe maybe at least one of us will survive this Wow this is actually amazing I didn't think the Fetzer could give a bigger [ __ ] you than they already have by turning fallout into a linear game of their choice but here they managed to do it they gave you a choice that completely ignores your choice I'm actually amazed it's like playing a [ __ ] telltale game I can think of no greater example of what the FETs has twists have followed into than this very moment as it represents have choices handled fairly well oh and there's the other issue 20 whole minutes into the game and your gift wrap to set up our armor and a minigun it's typically a bad idea to give really powerful equipment to a player early on in the game first of all this D value is actually getting this equipment for something that's supposedly rare and powerful gang it this early into the game makes an actual achievement of getting it meaningless and fallout 1 you're sent on an actual suicide mission you even find the bodies of the previous people they sent all just to join the Brotherhood of Steel and even then they didn't just give you suit of power armor you need to work to get that and fallout 2 you find it in a heart to access area of the game and while you can get it at level one I've done it myself you aren't going to know about it going into the game blind and it's a really [ __ ] nice surprise when you do get it even fallout 3 had the good sense to not allow players immediate access to power armor due to the fact you could just loot the armour from NPCs like any other NPC you actually need a training first this is not only incredibly rare equipment but it's also very powerful it turns you into a walking tank getting it this early offsets both the balance and pacing of the game because now you're an unstoppable killing machine that can shred enemies to bits without much of a care to give an example from another series this is why the mechanic exists within the Pokemon games if they make using traded Pokemon extremely difficult beyond a certain level they'll ignore you or fall asleep or hurt themselves or use an attack you didn't tell them to use all instead of just following your orders this is because getting a really high-level Pokemon early in the game means you could just steamroll your opponents with their to care in the world completely nullifying the challenge of the game this is also why high-level distribution event Pokemon have different original trainer than your character this is also why legendary Pokemon are usually reserved for late or post game encounters not only are they powerful but they're supposed to be incredibly rare or one-of-a-kind if you just found them in a wild with no problem and were able to catch dozens of them the title of legendary becomes meaningless the same applies of power armor in this situation incredibly rare powerful and sought-after equipment is just sitting there waiting for someone to take it and this is far from the only example there are dozens of sets of power armor just sitting out in the open in the world [Music] [Applause] this work site has gone zero days sure some are locked up but you're telling me in 210 years no one has unlocked any of these cages for the super equipment getting it to the hole 210 years the thing is another can of worms it will have to wait for later though anyways back on the subject this whole encounter is topped off with a sudden appearance of a deathclaw further strengthening my point you get the super gear and fight one of the most powerful and deadliest creatures in the game and lore only for the whole thing to be an incredibly underwhelming experience this turns deathclaws is an enemy into a joke The Enclave was so intimidating and Fallout 2 because of how powerful they were if you were unprepared they to decimate you with ease and it was sup how powerful and ruthless they are even then the post game of Fallout 2 a few turbocharged your character and max out your all your skills and everything several of these soldiers at once can prove challenging you don't get to kill one with ease in the first 30 minutes of gameplay because that would be stupid the deathclaw in fallout 4 is a joke because unless you're bad at the game you can complete this flight on very hard difficulty without taking a hit and this is while you're slowed down by the power armor thus making the encounter absolutely meaningless it's just another baddie to shoot so shoot it until it stops moving don't think about it just shoot the scary monster with that oh the way me returned to Preston and explained our situation and this walking tumor begins to speak prepare for another tangent because here it is mama Murphy is quite possibly one of the worst characters in the history of follow yeah yeah make all the jokes you want a bit Preston I know I have and I hope you don't mind but I've got another favor to ask I've had word from a settlement asking for help mama Murphy should not exist her big thing is something she refers to as the site which I guess is a vague psychic ability she has except it only works when she's on drugs for some reason it's here I feel I should mention this review will retread ground that other youtubers have covered already it's simply impossible for me to talk about aspects of the game that other youtubers like Joseph Anderson or Mr caption have talked about especially since what I'm gonna be talking about right now both of them have covered individually in their own videos mama Murphy is supposedly a siker which is essentially a person with psychic abilities of some form or another they've existed within Fallout since the very first game the master as well as a select few of his test subjects for psychos each with their own unique ability there's a couple and fallout 2 the village elder super mutants and mutated rat fallout 3 kind of had a couple I guess Fallout New Vegas had a few as well some like Ken who could comment on certain things as well as a kid named the forecaster who wore psychic nullifier to restrict his power as it caused some headaches the common presentation of all these psychos in the series so far is that their powers can't just be turned off especially due to the lack of a resource in the case of the Masters few test subjects as well as a forecaster it's a fact they were psychic nullifiers which even then didn't completely disabled or psychic abilities it just listened to their intensity and strength mama Murphy goes against us for seemingly no reason her abilities just appear and vanish based on her use or lack of drugs [ __ ] why what does this add to the world of fallout why does nonspecific drugs give her this ability yes I said nonspecific because it isn't one single drug that affects her power it's any kind of drug she just so happens to feel like taking sure in the game code there's a set list and an order you deliver them to her but you'd think that if her powers are based on what Kim's were in her body that her powers would rely on one type of Kim brain chemistry is a very fragile thing so you'd think of taking drugs altered that brain chemistry so she could see into the future it would rely on one specific drug that alters her brain chemistry in the appropriate way instead of total art and G so she has a psychic power that just decides on its own to work based entirely on seemingly random of different drugs at least if it was just one single drug it would make a little more sense in this just stick with me here for a second imagine if psychic abilities were real in the real world but your usage of them was based on a random craving for a random drug hey I want to look into the future I need to smoke some meth hey it's a few days later and I want to look into the future again better shoot up some heroin now it's a month later and I want to see into the future again better smoke some pot do you [ __ ] get how ridiculous this is and if you go to hell before you die on top of that to just have it be some kind of profit is lazy writing that's literally just using the script itself as a plot device now prophecies can exist in fiction and they can actually work really well if done right like in Morrowind then there are Vereen prophecy has basically except trials you must complete to become Venera Vereen this is basically just the events of the main story of Morrowind for example while the parts of the prophecy is that you become immune to age and disease your immunity to them isn't some holy blessing bestowed by the gods it's a [ __ ] horrible and incurable disease that can potentially turn you into this the only difference is that you try and experimental cure and madge to survive when all other previous test subjects have died and on top of that it's not even really a cure it just negates the negative effects of the disease leaving you ageless and immune to all other disease this is how a prophecy can work well in the game and it's another [ __ ] Bethesda game except it's a good one it wasn't some dumb [ __ ] saying ho ho you're important and are going to have an impact on the wasteland you're a hero boy here helping us what's your story me oh that's simple lead these here people to a land of safety and sanctuary now your tale that's whining then asking for drugs so you can find out more Marlon's prophecy worked because it actually had a place within the world and made sense within the context of that world mama Murphy is just some [ __ ] who can see into the future because reasons we finally reached the necks of many points in the story where professor railroads you as far as I found there's absolutely no other way to find out that you should check Diamond City the biggest settlement in the Commonwealth than by hearing it from mama herpes and to add insult to injury she throws in a line about not even needing her powers to tell you that I repeat the only way to find out that you should search Diamond City for your child is to hear it from a psychic who didn't even need her power to tell you this basic as [ __ ] information I can't see him not clearly but I feel his life force he's out there and even I don't need the sight to tell you where you should start looking the Great Green jewel of the Commonwealth diamond city the biggest settlement around the only good thing about mama Murphy is the fact you can kill her by giving her too many drugs unfortunately she's the only member of Preston's crew you can kill I usually like mixing psycho and with something else but I'll need it straight this time I've got it oh that's pure gonna be an interesting trip Oh No shoulda seen this coming [Music] [Music] are you kidding me what are we going to do without the sight we're heading for that place mama Murphy knows about sanctuary it's not far she knows about it you mean she had one of her visions while she was stoned out of her gourd sir Preston and his crew of [ __ ] move the sanctuary hills and set up shop in your home without even asking you in case you missed it on the first time through sanctuary as I did on my first playthru back at 2015 if you follow them back this will likely be your introduction to the settlement building once again I'll come back to this later another thing I'll be coming back to you relatively soon it's a minute minutes a faction as well as the other three factions so you get the diamond city and see what but does is Kodak moments as I call it these scripted events to feel kind of forced and clumsily implemented a woman named Piper screaming at an intercom but be led into the city as you walk up she lies to the security guard on the other side about you being a traitor he opens the door and the mayor of Diamond City who tried to have Piper locked out he's just kind of standing there so was he just waiting there to talk to her after the guard he ordered to not open the door opens the door for her and it's also standing right next to the mare there's a different issue coming up in just a moment but that will also have to wait for later what exactly was the mayor's plan and locking Piper out did he expect her to die there's a battle supermutants and diamond city security forces just a few metres away what happens if they need to retreat and the massive door is closed because the mare is pissed at Piper they'd be screwed what would happen if the security forces died because of his petty grudge towards Piper what do you mean you can't open the gate stop playing around Danny I'm standing out in the open here for crying out loud if she did die how would the residents of Diamond City react it's a pretty heinous act to lock your own townsfolk out of your nice safe town and leave them in the dangerous wasteland just because her pissed off at her did no amount of thought go into writing the sequence once again this could presented in a different way you could have entered Diamond City to find the mayor and Piper yelling at each other in the street outside her business he could be threatening to shut down her newspaper inside the town and would get the same point across without making him look like an incompetent sociopath by trying to get someone killed not caring about the safety of his own forces and potentially restricting trade into the town since that's a excuse eventually gets the gate open you tell them about your missing kid and paper suggests you hire the town's private detective Nick Valentine it's here we get railroaded by Bethesda once again you can talk to every NPC in this town and the most info you'll get from any of them is talk to Nick I'm lost pastor I need help please well I don't want to get your hopes up but there is someone who might be able to help Nick Valentine he's a detective saved a lot of lives over the years but so many more stay missing and trouble as a habit of sticking to him people going missing in the Commonwealth is such a regular issue that I can at least understand the perspective the people that grow jaded and weary of hearing about missing cases but you're telling me that there's only one single person in all of diamond city that allows you to elaborate on the kidnapping and that's Nick this becomes especially ridiculous with the revelation that's coming in a few minutes you go to Nick's office and find a secretary packing her bags because he's gone missing aren't you giving up a little early how long has he been gone a few hours or for like three months oh it's just a couple weeks you talk to her and now you've got to go save Nick you have to save the private detective that you're hiring to help save your son maybe I'd rather take my chances on my own but unfortunately we can't go off of mr. Howard's Wild Ride and we're still on Rails so off to save the detective we go Nick should be easy to spot he's always wearing that old hat and trench coat get up please hurry had and trench coat get up eh I wonder if there's any other distinguishing features that could be used to help find him you fight some bozos LARPing it's the old world mafia and make your way through an unfinished vault to find Nick and surprise a prize he's a synth wait a second why is this guy taunting Nick about needing food he's a [ __ ] robot this really sets the tone to show how far pathetic writers have gone to preserve their twists the twist here being Nick is a synth when you're expecting a human the entire line are you feeling hungry seems to be there to support the assumption that Nick is human as this is a line no one would ever question existing if it was presented towards a human character most people would be surprised at the revelation that Nick is a synth that they might have forgotten this throwaway line of dialogue and not question it but with the knowledge that Nick is a synth this really breaks down why would this be an effective taunt who would honestly think they're pissing off a robot by teasing it about having not eaten unrepeated the cracks really begin the show you rescue him and explain your situation he agrees to help you once he wraps up business here you can't exit the way you came in of course because that would be too straightforward see there's a [ __ ] hole in the ground maintenance shaft you have to jump through preventing you from leaving the same way you came in [ __ ] why so you follow Nick Oh Danny and lock the door for you twice do I even need to explain why this is a bad thing this is a [ __ ] RPG having an NPC perform an action that you are perfectly capable of it's ridiculous and serves only to treat the player like a child and take away from your ability to play the game yes it's a little thing but it's also a [ __ ] feature of gameplay you can't unlock it yourself you can't fight a key or terminal to unlock it an NPC shouldn't perform such an action unless it's a command given by the player because instead of allowing you that piece of gameplay you've just gotta wait for someone else to do it and for their animation a player for no reason and this happens twice so you exit back to the front of the vault and this mob boss his girlfriend and it's beans are just kind of standing there waiting for you what how did he knew you'd be leaving how'd he know you didn't already leave what was he expecting he's just standing there out in the open as if he expected to talk to whoever was coming out of the vault did he read the script hey here's a thought what if it was a pack of angry super mutants who wanted a new home or an army of synths looking for resources and stripping a vault and killing anyone in their way what if it was a group like the Brotherhood of Steel or The Enclave yes I just found all my men slaughtered so I'm going to stand right here dead center and from the only exit to this fault and hope this doesn't backfire horribly on me I guess if he read the script he stopped reading at this part or else he'd see we kill immediately after or maybe he thought we'd take the branch I allows him to live which ultimately does nothing he either stands at the vault entrance forever which you have no reason to return to or he'll sometimes go out into the world on a attack caravans either way he immediately becomes irrelevant since he served all the use he's had to this game so much for choice we meet Nick back in Diamond City and sit down to talk with him about our case he has us described the kidnappers and after an extremely basic description it comes to conclusion that's a man named Kellogg one of them came right up to me bald head scar across his left eye wait it couldn't be you didn't hear the name Kellogg at all did you no they never said their names way too big of a coincidence hey I guess it's a good thing there's only one man in the entire world who is bald and has a scar oh all right then remember how just a few minutes ago I said the scenario would become ridiculous well here it is as it turns out Cal it just so happens to live in town how convenient except for the fact as I already explained I cannot ask a single person about this in diamond city sure not ever again PC is going to know Kellogg but someone has to have seen him well I was finding this out from literally anyone else such an impossible task hell you don't even need Nick for this you could have asked the secretary because she has a case file on Kellogg Ellie what notes do we have about the Kellogg case wait what hold on there's a case fell on Kellogg already for [ __ ] what looking suspicious what possible case could they already have on him why could we not learn more about this case why isn't this case filed an actual quest within itself if there's a case file on him there could be some relevant information in there that could help us why can't we investigate this lead any further what is the case what's in the case file it doesn't matter shut up but stop questioning our overly convenient plot devices stop trying to go off the rails - and the rails direct us to Kellogg host next but first Nix s at Kellogg and the boy vanished a while back [Music] which raises another issue who live and fight if he didn't say these exact words if he said anything else because now there's a discrepancy with the setup here arriving at Diamond City pipe words locked outside arriving at Nicks you hear he's been missing for a few weeks and later in Kellogg's memories we can hear Trevor on the radio talking about paper its latest article accusing the mayor of being a synth which is the reason he locked her of the city what's the connection here it's the fact Nick said Kellogg and the boy vanished a while back so the very fact he knows at the very least means they're gone before Nick went missing and we don't even know for how long obviously God long enough for Nick to have noticed they were gone and that's we're to assume that the mayor just waited several weeks lock Piper of the city that is anyways once inside Kellogg's house you search the place and find a secret room there's a rare Brandon cigar which is our next clue before I get to that what's a secret room really necessary I mean it just seems like a pointless speed bump to me what is in there that Kellogg needs to hide as far as I'm aware there's no contraband to Diamond City so what the [ __ ] even if they do have a list of banned items when a brass cigars really be on that list you can't tell me he's afraid of diamond city security finding its weapons or Kim's because other characters in the city have their own with no problem does he have a secret room because he's an evil bad guy do all evil bad guys have secret rooms because it's cool anyways the cigars apparently enough of a clue to find out where he went choice is a thing that has been Fallout games since the start you have different options of handling different situations and once again even fallout 3 understood this to some degree something changed though instead of looking back on the history of fallout instead of taking lessons from obsidians new vegas bethesda instead decides to continually strip everything out of Fallout that made it what it was strip out or dump down that is one of the victims is choice and something I've touched on a little already and we'll be talking about in greater detail later but for now just keep that in mind as we're still a hard block to these rails you see even if you decide to ignore the dog at the start of the game he still shows up for this segment instead of you already knowing dogmeat Nick does and he calls them you absolutely need dogmeat to progress the story here which raises yet another issue they'll get back to at the end of this whole segment so you follow dogmeat as he glitches through a series of rest stops Kellogg made on the way to his hideout which is an old military base it's here we get definite proof that the plot device was taken by the Institute as a place is swarming with synths with Kellogg at the end there's a lot of fighting but you reach Kellogg and talk with him briefly you murdered my husband took my baby you're a dead man your husband that was a regrettable accident don't worry Shawn's fine maybe a little older than you expected huh but I can't give them to you because he ain't here [ __ ] you Kellogg let him go he says Shawn it's a bit older than you're expecting but that doesn't matter as you're gonna die here anyways copy Kent and you kill Kellogg and loot a piece of his brain this is an important item for the next quest it's a really good thing your character has the foresight to take this random body part in case it comes in handy later it's also a really good thing you didn't completely destroy Kellogg's head and potentially damage this component it seems really ridiculous to me that you would just loot this part of his brain with the component in it apparently this guy's full of tech which really only serves as a lazy excuse to preserve the plot twist but if he's full of technology to keep him alive then what makes this piece of brain standard as unique why would you take some guy's brain whatever you're not supposed to think about a story in an RPG it's just supposed to get you to on to the next plot point so off we go returning to Diamond City you discuss the next step with Nick and Piper Nick suggests it's a place called the memory den where people go to relive memories of theirs he believes we can plug into Kellogg's brain piece and go gallivanting a boat through his memories for the answers we seek so murderer and kidnapper gets his brains blown out by an avenging parent gets his brains blown out huh his brains you know we may not need the man at all you're talking crazy here Nick got a Fault in the old subroutines look there's a place in good-neighbor called the memory den relive the past moments in your mind as clear as the day they happened if anyone could get a dead brain to sing it'll be dr. Amaury dr. Amaury he looks over the brain piece and says the tech in it is entirely unique and will only work with other Institute equipment for this purpose we have Nick it's a really really lucky coincidence it's the only robotic synth in the entire Commonwealth that isn't under Institute control it's not only friendly but also willing to help us with this task so now it's the time for Kellogg's memories we all know the best way to handle story in an open world RPG is a chef but player into an overly extended 20 minute long interactive cutscene where they can't do anything well story is just vomited at them hey remember what I said earlier near the start of this video I've had a character on a bad TV show suddenly getting backstory and a lot of screen time before dying welcome to the horribly implemented video game equivalent something interesting could have been done with this segment but instead you're disarmed and forced to walk through the disjointed corridors represented Kellogg's memories with no branching paths well you hear MPC's talking and callek conveniently narrating his own memories for you how thoughtful of them at showing he had a girlfriend at a baby and soon followed up by the heavy implication that something bad happened to them this seems like a lazy attempt to connect the Kellogg to the players character having gone through a similar hardship only to have failed in saving his family which it can be said ultimately happens to you your character is powerless to prevent their significant others death or the kidnapping of their baby and once you do meet Shawn there's nothing you can do to change his mind about anything I suppose the expected implication here is that you could very well be going down the same path as Kellogg losing your morals along the way for the sake of vengeance and becoming the monster you've viewed Kellogg as from the moment you saw him threatening your family yet none of this is explored at all no one cautions you about your actions if you are falling from the path of morality and no one commends you on sticking true to doing the right thing you're voiced character doesn't question their own actions either way and there's nothing to check in the pip-boy regarding this because as I've stayed in many times this game is on Rails and we're still stuck on them there is no real option to do good or bad or anything besides fall the rails were on there isn't even the Karma system that fallout 3 had despite being a lazy downgrade from the more complex reputation - fallout 1 - in New Vegas they're still better than nothing as a result this attempted connection to Kellogg as well as the implication that you're following in his footsteps is ultimately meaningless we kill an antagonist gasps entire story thrown at us postmortem in about 5 to 10 minutes and are expected to care or take something away from it like the rest of this game it's Hollow and does not carry the weight it should it's the same lazy writing a lot of entertainment media does and through as a family unto a character to make you care about them more and it falls flat like most other times it's done oh no his father was mean to him as a kid he had a family and lost them he's suddenly a tragic character I feel emotionally connected to you it's an extremely cheap way to try and make the audience care when there's really no reason to and when it's handled this way these characters are basically props introduced at the last second to try and make you feel something unfortunately this crap works on a lot of people you could connect an audience with a properly developed character let's hard to have any real meaning and connect with a character when they're generic bad guy man oh but wait now he has a tragic backstory shortly after we get to see the kidnapping again this time from Kelloggs perspective there's a couple things to note in this segment that we can't talk about right away I've got to save them for the right time which is in the near future first is his mention of the old man who I assume was the leader of the Institute the other is the fact that all the other frozen people are intentionally killed by the Institute because they were supposedly loose ends I never knew why we didn't just read freeze the rest of them but we had our orders get the old man didn't want so many loose ends I did mention this one earlier and I can actually talked about some of this right now I'm just saving part of this for later so these people are loose ends a [ __ ] how how is leaving the parent of the child who kidnapped not to loose end too bad it left alive the one person he shouldn't have but the rest of these people are why would any of these random [ __ ] care about your kidnapped kid how many of them would really risk their lives to save this kid I'm sure at this point they'd be more worried about staying alive in the [ __ ] post-nuclear wasteland from their perspective it's been about 10 minutes since the world was newt not 210 years we know nothing about these people how many of them are going to have the military experience of Nate why would the Institute with its army of robots and completely inaccessible base ever fear a bunch of random pre-war citizens they probably pose less of a threat to the Institute from the average wastelanders do at least the average wastelanders have experience living in the wasteland they're almost guaranteed to have more survival experience than some pre-war softies that have never even heard of a deathclaw before and don't expect Raiders to exist you're worried about loose ends but a one person you give an actual reason to hunt you down it's also the one person you leave alive and in the case of player choosing Nate it's a single most capable person in this vault of being a threat with its built-in military experience we're never given an actual reason besides the old man while them dead because mo loose ends even though this is actively counterproductive to his goals and the Institute's goals as a whole got a hold back here got a hold on this for just a little later it'll be more impactful then moving along to the last sequence here we see Kellogg in his home in diamond city with a 10 year old Shawn and we learned that Institute uses teleportation this is how they get in and out of their base which explains why no one has ever found their base of operations before it's because there are no entrances or exits fair enough I guess I don't really have an issue with teleport existing within fallout so considering how broken the rest of the Institute is this is likely just another plot device to make the more secretive or something Kellogg's narration again mentions the old man another fact we'll be bringing up later but was one of the old man's pet project so here we were this whole set up and diamond City was part of some elaborate plan of the old man's maybe a sign that the old man was losing his grip before you leave you learn of a scientist who has escaped the Institute as hiding out in the glowing sea and you eggs Kellogg's brain chunk is your next lead you said it for the glowing sea and meet the scientists turned super mutant Virgil piece of biologist and turned himself into his super mutant The Hideaway from the Institute in the glowing sea I'm not sure that's going to deter them the way you think it might last I checked robots are unaffected by radiation in fact Nick personally confirms us literally moments after dr. Amaury says the radiation might have to turn the institute from going out there for him that's why he's there to make the Institute think twice about following him that must be it he's using the radiation in the glowing sea like a shield or a cloak a way to throw them off and be at an advantage we have to head into the glowing sea any advice mm I'm a synth so radiation isn't much of an issue for me but an old suit of power armor might just be the guardian angel you're looking for Virgil agrees to help you get into the Institute on the condition that while you're there you find its cure for being a super mutant [ __ ] what hey is anyone prepared for another tangent because I believe we're about due for one right [ __ ] now having the [ __ ] do you cure being a super mutant do the writers of possess a not realize the impact this has on the world of Fallout do they also not realize the fact that something could change a normal human into this is it as [ __ ] simple as curing a cold which even now the Institute cannot do all this advanced technology and we still can't cure the common cold but we're expected to believe that severe genetic mutation on countless levels can be completely reversed with this random serum in just three days wait a second we'll have it to all that extra body mass will happen to all that extra skin you cannot unbaked a [ __ ] cake it is impossible worse yet is the impact on the world of fallout that I mentioned this may not be a retcon like other issues we'll be discussing later but just having a straight-up honest-to-god cure for being a super mutant in this game meets it we'll have to make an appearance in future games why because if it's only used this one single time and never comes up again that's a really cheap and pointless plot to fight that makes no sense within the context of the fallout world if Virgil dies between this game and the next game that's an excuse to just end this plot thread which already existed for no reason the implication here is that Virgil survives and would know how to make more of the stuff as a result now that there's an established cure it wouldn't make sense to just have a new entry to the series that isn't a prequel has super mutants in it it just drops us plot thread like it doesn't exist a followed fiver to come out and we're in a new wasteland infested with super mutants everyone would be asking but what about the super muted cure from fallout 4 and if the reason really is virtual died before he can make more than it really is the ultimate kapu what if a concentrated effort arises among the human secured super mutants there is a full decade between the events of fallout 3 and 4 assuming there's as much of a time gap between 4 and 5 it's possible virtual could create more in that time span he's done it once after all hell he might even have a sample left over to work off of a once horrible an irreversible process is now hardly a threat at all and sure the super mutants themselves won't be lining up for a cure but the syringe er exists you could shoot at long range or alternatively you could just do what the Enclave tried to do and fallout 2 and just gas the entire [ __ ] planet both the intent to cure rather than kill this effectively eliminates any reason the super musics have to exist as a race beyond the next few titles because they can be completely eliminated by being cured why the [ __ ] would you do this Bethesda at this point I can only assume they don't care just make a shallow story and hope no one knows it's how [ __ ] awful it is if they do notice just ignore them anyways you talked to Virgil and despite being an Institute scientist you cannot like any means ask him about your son [ __ ] why shouldn't an Institute scientist know something about him in some capacity hell even some calling words would be nice hey yeah shine is safe you could still get him out but he's in no harm and likely won't ever be where he is or even know I don't know anything about a kidnapped child just [ __ ] something but no you cannot ask basic and obvious questions because rails I know I've talked a lot about the rails at this point but trust me it's for good reason when I say Pathet says railroading you I [ __ ] mean it Virgil tells us he'll draw up the blueprints for the teleportation relay I sure am glad this biologist knows how to build a [ __ ] teleporter I wonder how many hearts are they're qualified to work as rocket scientists in real life we also need the relay code from the coarser chip so now we have to finally kill a quarter agent basically an elite synth model designed to track down and either capture or eliminate escape zones once again something to talk about later I actually kind of like this crust because not only do you actually have to track him down without the goddamn map marker but the game also provides a means for doing this what what is this what could the strange alien feeling be could it be game play holy [ __ ] but that's actually did it it's us I put some actual [ __ ] gameplay into their video game amazing you did it well done congratulations I'm so proud of you so you kill them and get the chip and you end up returning to the memory dead and you're told that you need to find the railroad and [ __ ] [ __ ] but this stuff now it's gonna look like I'm contradicting myself here seconds after praising you for not using the goddamn map marker you're told to follow the Freedom Trail to find the railroad and are directed to an area of the Fossen ruins where there used to be a tourist attraction about following the Freedom Trail and learning of Boston's history it's what been more interesting if there are actual clues to fly it but no it's just a red path from the ground least you straight to the railroad secret base it may not have a map marker but this is somehow even worse the longest trail are several giant Freedom Trail emblems with a number and an arrow point to get one of the letters once in the old church you make your way down in the basement are presented with a tough puzzle to enter the railroads base so I know I gave a spoiler warning at the start of this video I'm good do another one quickly right now because I'm about to reveal the super duper secret and definitely intelligently thought-out password to this major factions headquarters in three two what the password is railroad as in the very name of the faction who set the password no really I'm not joking anymore the spoiler warning was a joke this is a hundred percent serious the password to the railroads base is a railroad so the combination is one two three four five that's the stupidest combination I ever had in my life that's the kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage even now over two and a half years later I still find this mind-numbing Lee [ __ ] and it doesn't get any better on repeat playthroughs imagine walking into Microsoft's headquarters going up to the CEOs computer and entering Microsoft as a password to enter his personal computer with all of Microsoft's most important information on it that's how dumb this is the railroad has to be careful about basically everything they do because Institute wants them exterminated they cause issues for the Institute and help escape since as far as the Institute is concerned the railroad is public enemy number one in fact as we learned in the railroad path the Institute has previously raided and wiped out several of their bases including their former headquarters so these geniuses decide to make their hideout and not only a public monument but a public monument with a highlighted trail through the [ __ ] city leading straight to it and they also marked down their password in the most obvious way possible besides just straight-up writing it out and in case that didn't make it simple enough already their password is literally just their name on top of that it's a tidbit of information they've put out is that if they need to be found you need to follow the Freedom Trail which you can hear from nameless and PCs in the world meaning that the way to find them isn't even secret these [ __ ] may as well be living in [ __ ] Diamond City at this point with a giant flashing neon sign saying secret railroad HQ am I the only one who sees how [ __ ] stupid this is I'm like going crazy am I losing my [ __ ] mind here or are we supposed to expect the fallout takes place in a world full of people too stupid to use the most basic [ __ ] logic if this puzzle is intended to challenge the player this is infantile and insulting how [ __ ] dumb do you think your audience is pretty [ __ ] stupid if Skyrim's puzzles are anything to go by puzzles that amount to quite literally matching a picture of an animal on the wall with a rotating statue beneath it I'd call it child's play but I'm pretty sure five year old me wouldn't have considered match the picture to be a puzzle if this is not intended to be some kind of puzzle that could have been presented in a way that doesn't make literally the entire world look [ __ ] stupid because right now the railroad is looking pretty [ __ ] incompetent for making it easiest shift for Joe random to find you without effort when you're supposedly a secretive group and face death if you're caught and the Institute is looking equally [ __ ] incompetent for not finding this crew of brain-dead bozos when there's so many [ __ ] obvious clues hey here's an idea geniuses have a course or pretend to be an escaped synth now Jessica meant I'll kill everyone when he's in there hide Oh a single-core sir takes out dozens of gunners who are basically trained soldiers like it's no problem in the previous quest I don't think he'd have much issue with the railroad most of them aren't even wearing armor there's more to say on the railroad but I'm gonna have to save that for when I talk to it the rest of the factions for now let's just get back to it this [ __ ] comes out of nowhere and vouches for you for absolutely no reason newsflash boss this lady is kind of a big deal if you're done interrogating her you might want to show this coarser murdering machine a little courtesy anyway say decode the coarser chip for you just like that literally only takes a minute so is this guy an expert on institute technology despite having a lack of access to it you can just do this with a random pre-war computer terminal wait a second I thought Institute technology could only interface with other Institute technology so how is the railroad doing it here this entire terminal luxury oh right so maybe they built it from what wait they don't even directly plug it into the terminal just this thing I read to expect they built this from a strapped old model synth or something I mean the Institute seems pretty protective of its technology if it's actually built from old-world tech then how would they know how to interface it with the Institute tech it seems like they'd have the same problem either way they've never seen a quarter ship before so how do they know how to plug it into their computer I guess it's just really really lucky they figured it out and a minute right you get the relay code and return the Virgil he gives you the schematics and well this part is kind of weird see we're coming up on the part of the game where we have to align with a faction but we don't have access to all of them yet we're still kind of sort of given a choice here on who we should side with for building the teleporter to answer the Institute you could go with the Minutemen the railroad or the Brotherhood of Steel yeah I haven't talked about them yet you know I'm going to say at this point later you so we build our teleporter and enter the Institute this is what the entire main story so far has been building up to I expected to be dealing with security forces but enter to find a room devoid of man and machine well man and robot I should say and then simply named father began speaking to you over an intercom and you enter an elevator you get to see the Institute in all its glory it's presented as a sort of paradise it's clean and safe and there doesn't appear to be a worry in the world for the people here everything horrible you've heard about them begins it sound like a myth created of fear paranoia and hatred you eventually reach a room and see Shan sealed off with glass walls despite this you and him could hear each other perfectly fine no matter how calmly you handle the situation Shan freaks out and shuts down revealing himself to be a synth and the man named father walks in it's here I have to restate I don't intend to copy other youtubers in this video in particular Joseph Anderson's fall out for analysis because we had a similar reaction at this point in the game though for different reasons in his own video he states that as a father himself he played that role in the game and eliminated what he considered to be a direct threat to his character son in my case in games that allow this sort of freedom at least I like to attack characters to [ __ ] with her just generally act like a [ __ ] to my character even if I reload a save there's something cathartic about an [ __ ] of getting what's coming to them so as soon as father appears I kill him with the intent on tearing the entire Institute apart until I find the real Shaun as well as the fact that what just happened was both an incredibly cruel thing to do to a parent missing their child there's all it's kidnapping Shaun in the first place the game seems to have break at this moment all the NPC's in the Institute turn hostile and try to run through locked doors you can't do anything else but leave this actually legitimately pissed me off the first time through it's tough living I decided to reload a save and actually talk to father this time I've gotta bring up those damn rails again here because this is the exact moment the entire first half of the game is leading to all the inconsistencies all the lack of options all the poor choices and decisions of every character we've met so far has been built around this one singular moment I could think of no other reason for such a horribly written story to exist in this way other than to preserve this absolutely god-awful twist it's me I am Sean I am your son father is Sean this old man leader of the Institute is your son you weren't refrozen for 10 years you were refrozen for 60 years if there wasn't enough problems with the story as it is this is where the whole thing begins to collapse upon itself this is the exact moment fallout 4 begins to [ __ ] implode and it's going to be hard to keep track of all the reasons why this game is a [ __ ] rabbit hole with no [ __ ] end in sight the deeper you go the worse it gets in case anyone is tired of saying I'll talk about that later well here's some relief for you because a lot of fire is referring to you I'm going to be talking about now Kellog I know I've called Shawn a plot device so far but Kellogg is an actual plot device given a voice a name and a rush and incredibly lazy backstory with a lame attempt to pass his plot device off as a character he exists to preserve the twists and all of 60 years he hasn't aged a single day the explanation for this can be heard from Shawn in a throwaway line and it's also tucked away on a terminal inside the Institute apparently he's got cybernetic implants or something but shows absolutely zero signs of it cybernetics do exist within the world of Fallout but it's often obvious signs of it even if his life has dramatically extended as a result of this it's powerful enough to completely negate the effects of aging and looked exactly as he did the day he kidnapped Shawn maybe he's a neuro Vereen I realized he's also this badass mercenary who could handle situations but he managed to not accidentally get himself killed in all this time either he didn't get this figured or gain additional scars or anything he shuts a picture-perfect version of himself from 60 years ago none of his electronic components are showing so to Luke the brain chunk earlier did your character just randomly decide to crack open colored skull like a melon there are no obvious signs of a cybernetics so we have to assume that's the case the [ __ ] is basically presented as science magic why do we need him to have cybernetic implants the very same Institute computer that tells us Kellogg has cybernetics a straight up calls him a cyborg also tells us the project was halted by Shawn even as I'm sitting here writing this review I'm still finding issues some of the major issues and it's just [ __ ] endless more and more keep coming up and keep in mind the one I'm going to talk about right now is it the first major one since I've started writing this another one is coming up shortly as well I started writing at the previous section about calyx implants and it just kind of [ __ ] dawned on me I had it actually read this terminal since my first playthru back in 2015 when the game was released i only skimmed over it on while my recent playthroughs done for the review so i had to go back and check and there are a couple important pieces of information on this terminal first of all Kellogg is more than 100 years old at this point he hasn't aged a day in the sixty years since he kidnapped Sean also in this terminal Sean says he personally eliminated the cybernetics project at what point did Sean become the leader the Institute that he'd have the power to eliminate this project furthermore in this terminal it talks about how he sees the other scientists are jealous of college dramatically increased lifespan did no one else receive these augments was Kellogg the only one considering Kellogg slack a visibly aging it can be reasonably assumed he had his augments at the time of the kidnapping 60 years ago at which point Sean was still a newborn baby less than a year old even if you were to assume he became the unquestioned leader of the Institute at the age of 18 that's still nearly two full decades for others to receive the cybernetic augments or even improve upon the existing ones when they've proven to be successful with Kellogg to top this all off he then says in these logs that the Institute is about preserving humanity not some bizarre and Automation of biology and technology [ __ ] what then what the [ __ ] are the since we literally see their creation the current generation model since appear to be made from flesh blood and technology every single synth in the game that passes as a human has a synth component on them when killed but also explode in a shower of gore like every other human NPC how is this not a fusion of biology and technology what the [ __ ] is going on here can this game please just make some kind of logical and cohesive sense for just a few minutes I feel like my head is going to [ __ ] explode from dealing with all this [ __ ] so again why does Kellogg need to be augmented why does Bethesda's writing team have to fall back on [ __ ] science magic to explain why this guy's still alive are there not better options available let's try to figure this out hmm what might have worked better and not directly caused additional plot holes well super mutants won't work because they're obviously vastly different from humans and appearance not to mention Bethesda seems to think that 99.9% of super mutants are just angry orcs that want to destroy the world I guess the ghoul could technically work if you were to give him cosmetic surgery but that might also be as much of an as pole two augments and also the fact that the Institute might not want to deal with ghouls hmm what else what else oh I thought of something the one thing is it too is known for more than any other [ __ ] since it's already established they can make sense that easily pass off it's human to the point that they actually replace people with since it's already established that they can apparently scan a person's brain and literally just transplant their memories into a synth so why the [ __ ] couldn't the original Kellogg be a human that has since died and the Kellogg we faced off against be a synth copy so it's Shawn that's tricking you instead of the [ __ ] writers well it has to be the original Kellogg despite how many errors this causes because you need to dance through his memories to get to this point which itself brings me to more of the plot holes I said I'd to talk about late I said take note of a couple things during his memory sequence the fact that all the frozen vault dwellers are killed except you but also the fact that he talks about the old man twice let's first finish talking about the vault dwellers in addition to posing next to no threat to the Institute as I previously established I said this is actively detrimental to the Institute's plans and here's how the reason they kidnap Shawn is because they need a pure human untainted by radiation this is so they can make him more accurate and true to life since without the corruption and mutation caused by the radiation that now seeps into every corner of the world so in their quest to find pure untainted humans they not only find a vault but a vault full of cryogenically frozen pre-war humans this is quite possibly the absolute best sampling of pure human DNA they could have ever found it must have been like winning the lottery for them they could not have had better luck in finding exactly what they needed if they tried these people have probably the most valuable DNA being specifically pre-war humans as it can be argued that the sentence in a vault might be corrupted to some extent depending on what the experiment was in said vault or if the vault was opened and vault dwellers were breeding with the dirty outsiders the experiment in your vault is clear cryogenically frozen people there are no ifs ands or buts about it not to mention pure humans could be valuable test subjects for other experiments of the Institute is actually working on and even if that wasn't the case you'd think pure pre-war human DNA would be a vital resource to keep on hand just in case so obviously the logical thing to do is kidnap a single child and put it Leslie murder doesn't two people for absolutely no reason ladies and gentlemen I give you the Institute the absolute greatest minds of the post-apocalyptic world hey know what else might have also worked recruiting them or leaving them frozen for later nothing says they all have to be released at once I really have to stress that they hit the jackpot with prime subjects here they could have done anything instead they decided to do nothing how the [ __ ] would these people be a loose end am I supposed to just take this throwaway line of dialogue as the absolute gospel I've always had these throwaway lines for the sake of plot convenience in any entertainment media this isn't the only time that's happened to fallout 4 either when you first reached the railroad Deacon comes out and backed you up somehow he already knows he killed a courser when you ask him he gives a roundabout version of I have my ways by instead saying it's my job to know things spectacular writing before we get to the next issue regarding Kellogg talking about the old man I've got a quick comment to make about the memory sequence since we're back on this subject isn't it awfully convenient that there are absolutely no memories between the kidnapping itself and the final area in the sequence we get bits of his memory from the first 40-plus years of his life then a really convenient random gap of 60 years between that and the present day in Diamond City it's almost like this entire story was built up entirely around the lazy twist it wasn't fully thought-out a scene of Kellogg talking as Shawn would really mess things up here anyways during Kellogg's narration of the fault Doyle is being killed he mentions the old man then mentions him again in the next part of the memory sequence if you don't know where I'm going with this and strapped in so by this point you should be well used to stupidity of the writing in this game the old man he's referring to during the kidnapping of Shawn is 60 years ago in case you forgot the old man he's referring to in his diamond City apartment immediately after that sequence is in their past few days which means the old man he's referring to there is in fact Shawn this means when Kellogg says the old man he is objectively talking about two different people that he's referring to by the same name what the [ __ ] am I supposed to take away from this am I supposed to assume Bethesda's riding team are just utterly and confident I cannot write a story that makes even the bare minimum of logical sense am I to assume they had a laser focus on this plot twist and just sacrifice the integrity of the entire rest of their story not to mention the player's freedom of dealing with situations all for the sake of that twist my to assume they just seriously did not care in the slightest about the game they were making and threw together a lazy story and called it a day did no one on their [ __ ] writing staff question or even see any of these problems how the [ __ ] was this approved on any level we're talking about a massive triple-a game and one of the biggest game franchise from one of the most well known game developers on the planet we're talking about a game that very well likely had a budget this at the very least a hundred million dollars at least on the best estimates I could find since games don't publish their budgets like movies do can you see why I say fallout 4 is an objectively bad game I'm not even done with all the profits of plot holes this game has yet either I've barely scratched the surface it just continually gets worse the more you look at it I'm not even done with the main storyline of this game yet never mind everything outside of the main story a good story does not require a big budget a complex story our story with a twist are not inherently good stories just because they are complex or have a twist both of these things are only good when they're actually written well are consistent and make sense in the context of the world are presented in and none of this has done well in this game crafting a good story only requires thoughtfulness care and attention to detail fallout 1 and 2 stories weren't overly complex and by that I silly mean the main storylines because the rest of the world building was fantastic but they allowed players choice and they told their stories well they built up a world in the first game and expanded on it in the sec it was interesting and made sense all the elements of the stories and side stories and historical events all work together and fit in together excluding the obvious Easter eggs and keep in mind fallout 1 came in a time when isometric RPGs were dying out and wasn't really backed by interplay at the start it was just Tim Kaine working on an engine because he felt like it and he ended up bribing his co-workers with pizza' to work on this game with him in the office after hours because no one was assigned to this project and he couldn't take time away from their own projects and that single-handedly spawned one of the biggest and most widely regarded RPG franchises of all time fallout 1 was about having to find a [ __ ] computer chip for your vault and in the process of finding it you learn of the super mutants you plan on converting all the normies into super mutants as well it's a well written story and fits in with the context of the world that's been created there isn't any massive issues that ruin the story or cause logical inconsistencies and it manages to build up his unique post-apocalyptic world really well now I just basically ultra simplified it there since there is a lot to the original fallout a lot of thought and effort and attention to detail went into making this game fallout 2 is about you setting off to find a ghek which will save your village during your travels you learn about the Enclave who kidnap your entire village and you learn about their ruthless plan to kill everything that isn't pure like they are but ultimately these games were about choice and about this intricate and interesting world they presented there's an entire alternate history that's built and makes sense within the context of the world that exists within this is why these games have so much respect from not only the longtime fans for a year since the beginning but from the fans like myself who only learned about follow-through Bethesda but came to respect the originals far more than to festus attempts at fallout your actions had meaning and consequence the stories you were told made sense within the world they represented there was care put into making these two games in my personal opinion Bethesda is not only squandering one of the greatest RPG franchises to ever exist but they're actively damaging its leg see at this point I'd even go as far to call it an actual desecration the original Fallout Plus New Vegas and Bethesda's fallout are essentially two different series at this point the former being a series of plenty of choice and well told stories and attention to details of the world the latter being a cheap mimic that will never live up to what made the originals good mostly being a worthless knockoff cashing in on an established series and all of its iconic imagery without a care for what came before it just making these fallout themed games with no substance I can only assume that's their intense because what else is there what else am I supposed to believe am I supposed to just accept that Bethesda truly wants to build a good Fallout game I can't assume anyone at Bethesda truly gives a rat's ass about the history and lore of Fallout when they're so willing to disregard and violate a constantly now I understand writing stories isn't the easiest of things for just anyone to do but if we're talking about the fifth major entry into a long-running and popular as [ __ ] game series of 20 years of lore and history behind it a triple-a budget I assume is no less than a hundred million dollars that I kind of expect of writing to not be absolute [ __ ] that's comes off more as a bad fanfiction put into game for him than a full-price triple-a game again a good story doesn't require budget just someone who truly cares and pays attention to the detail then there's this guy that particular snippet ends with Elm saying the player will take any story Bethesda writes up Rip's two pages out and make paper planes it'll be amazing and you're gonna give this book this great American novel to the player and what are they gonna do with it they're gonna rip out every page in make paper airplanes out and they're gonna throw the wrong room and they're never gonna see your story because the story is there right but they are going to spend 30 hours making shacks in that the most important story is the player story and we're okay with that problem is he's failed to describe how this affects his work if it doesn't why bother at this point why is being conscious of this part of your formula when I try to fill in the blanks myself the conclusion I'm left to draw is that since the player will potentially ignore your stories don't bother with too much care or detail again alum doesn't even answer this or explain his point it's left without conclusion I highly recommend watching it's a Gundams video on this but basically what the lead [ __ ] right or a fault for is saying here is that no matter how good a story is written in a game the player is just gonna dick around and [ __ ] all over it how the [ __ ] is this man a game developer on a quick side note Amell has been relegated to writing jokes for bubblegum wrappers so maybe this problem is solved now and that I have another question who gets to write the jokes in the gum wrappers that is my role oh are you know he does all the master of the yes there are gonna be plenty of people who just stick around in a game and don't care about the story that's the entire point of a video game but that's not an excuse to write a bad story or just not give a [ __ ] because there will still be people who care I played morrowind a ton as a kid you know what I did not the main [ __ ] story i [ __ ] around in town to killed random NPC's for fun because I could making paper airplanes as email calls it you know what I did when I grew up I played morrowind again I deeply enjoyed the experience this game provided and respected the well delivered story that existed within scam I forget where I heard this quote if I remember if someone reminds me I'll update the description in this video with a link to the source but the context it was said in was in relation to movies and that quote is special effects age stories do not I feel this applies largely here one of the things fallout 4 is praised for us how great it looks that is in fact one of the few positive points to fallout 4 it does look really great sometimes but I've got another quote for you here about special effects one of those fatal mistakes that almost every science fiction film makes is that they spend so much time on the settings you know creating the environment that they spend film time on it story is not the settings the story is the story's plot and the first film we had maybe 20 colors to paint with and this time we've had 40 colors to paint with well it doesn't mean it's gonna be a better painting special effects are just tool a means of telling a story people have a tendency confused and there's an end to themselves a special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing now I know this was obviously set in relation to movies but can this also not apply to videogames as I've said the reason people still love the original Fallout games it's because I told good stories really well allowed you choice no bullshitting around no massive inconsistencies or plot holes and while there are some longtime fans who probably just hate the pathos of Fallout games because the format is different for most it's less to do with that and more to do with the fact that it really doesn't seem like Bethesda truly has any care for followed as a whole it's just a product for them to produce and make money off of rather than a world they truly care about developing and expanding upon fallout 3 was a poorly done rehash at both fallout one and two stories the super mutants have been reduced to mindless killing machines and shouldn't be in this game [Laughter] the Brotherhood of Steel took a gamble on a rumor that there might be highly advanced tech on the east codes without fully knowing if it was true and traversed the entire country based on that rumor which is just stupid but along the way they've decided to become saviors of the people instead of the xenophobic technophiles they've built themselves up to be again that quote I mentioned a couple minutes ago special effects age a story does not the stories of the original Fallout games are long lasting even if it's graphics have aged the story of morrowind is long lasting and still enjoyable even if the graphics have aged the story of fallout 4 will never be long-lasting not a single person with the slightest amount of critical thinking skills will look back and fallout 4 and say it was a truly well-written game it is a product for a company to make money off of and while the same is true for every game out there and in fact every product some games actually make it worth your time and money to play fallout 4 does not why should I invest my time in a game that says it's a deep RPG with a good story but in reality it's an insulting ly shallow action shooter with a piss-poor story that is completely nonsensical why should I care even the slightest about this game let's clear the people making it didn't care at least as far as the writing goes why am I going on so hard about this because some of us actually want to enjoy a good well-written story if you want a game about mindlessly shooting people I'd like to remind you that Call of Duty exists followed us about the world and the people within that world the history and lore of that world as well as the stories were told forums our fundamental understanding of how this world and its people work even if it doesn't take place in the real world the world of Fallout sets up its own an internal consistency which Bethesda has horribly failed at living up to with their own games to the point that Fallout 4 is so massively inconsistent with itself it's actually stunning at how bad it is to show the radical difference between what fallout was what possess has turned it into I'd like to present you with two quotes my idea it's to explore more of the world and more of the ethics of a post-nuclear world not to make a better plasma gun Tim Kaine the Creator follow we have to build a first-person shooter and it has to be a really really good one Todd Howard the fundamental design philosophies of the originals and Bethesda are drastically different some may point out that the Todd Howard quote is incomplete that starts off with him saying we can't apologize for being a role-playing game but the problem with that is they stripped out almost all the role-playing elements anyways the entire point of saying something like we can't apologize for being a role-playing game insularly say we're not going to sacrifice being an RPG for the sake of people who aren't interested in RPGs aligned like we can't apologize for being an RPG it's what you say when you stick to your guns make an RPG even if it isn't going to be the most successful thing ever but instead we get this watered-down tasteless mush that's desperately trying to hold on to the RPG genre tag despite not being an RPG in any sense anyways let's get back on track Shaun says he wanted you to find the Institute so he can meet you why not just bring you here they have [ __ ] teleporters why would he risk the life of his only surviving parent by throwing them into the wasteland with no guidance he said allowing the player to kill Kellogg allowed some amount of vengeance for both of them but what if the hundred-year-old cybernetically enhanced professional killer somehow got the upper hand on the pre-war citizen not even counting that what the [ __ ] with his planner gang you to the Institute let's do a very quick recap of the story so far bullet points to keep it as simple as possible so to go over all the coincidences it'll have to talk a bit more on the points yes I know it's tedious since I could talk about the ship since the beginning I'll try to keep it short one you exit the fault to make you wait a sanctuary - who talked to codpiece and he tells you to go to Concord 3 you meet Preston and his crew before a plot hole tells you to search diamond city 5 here each time the city and have to hire a private detective 6 you find this P I and just so happens he's a synth 7 you search Kellogg's apartment and find a cigar 8 a dog sniffs a cigar and tracks down Kellogg 9 you kill Kellogg and his face and take a piece of his brain 10 you go to the memory den and with the help of Nick access Kellogg's memories 11 you learn of an institute scientist who's escaped to the glowing sea 12 said scientists tells you to get a cursor chip so you do 13 you take the cursor chip to the sworn enemy of the Institute to be decoded 14 said scientists draws up blueprints for the teleporter for you 15 you built the teleporter and enter the Institute and meet father this entire sequence of events relies on a series of insane coincidences to work otherwise you'd be left out a total dead end so I have to once again restate that the Institute has been impossible to find up until this point and have been so secretive about their methods that no one even knew they used teleporters to enter and leave the Institute and Shawn now expects you to find an institute and make your own way in first of all he expects a random pre-war citizen to survive in the wasteland with absolutely no knowledge of how things work now even Shawn himself has never stepped outside of the Institute and till you side with them I'm sorry but no amount of I'm gonna save you son it's going to keep someone alive with a bullet to the head this is a video game so things work out of course or we reload a save but from the perspective of these characters this is the real world they live in and Shawn just releases someone who is inexperienced with the wasteland expects them to conquer it not to mention achieved something no one else has been able to before we get some advice from our robot servant copies but he had been destroyed or ran out of power gone insane some point in that 210 years our character would have no real guidance for a first step but codpiece it's a okay so we take his advice and go to conquer to meet Preston and his crew mama Murphy tells us to go to Diamond City this part isn't really a coincidence since you should be able to find this in Flute by other means but the game won't let you because of reasons so let's just skip this you reach Diamond City and have to rescue the detective that's going to help you the unique thing about him is the fact that he's a synth in fact he's the only old model synth in the entire game that I'm aware of that has a personality and is friendly and before anyone says anything no I'm not counting the DLC yet that travesty comes much later on we'll come back to Nick in just a moment now we search Kellogg's house and find a cigar dogmeat sniffs it and tracks down Kellogg based on this now keep in mind in Kellogg's own memories sitting in this very apartment he says that he's realized he's just bait for your character here meaning Shawn is specifically intending for you to find him on top of that shawn himself says he planted it this way so the both of you could have some level of vengeance and closure by having you kill Kellogg vengeance is a good desire it's a good theme to write I really like it but how the [ __ ] did he expect you to track down Kellogg if you just so happen to not have a dog as I've explained if you don't meet dogmeat the story actually changes and it's Nick who calls dogmeat fine whatever but the point here is still a fact that without a dog does friendly to your character you'd be left at a dead end there is no alternate path that Shawn know you'd meet a dog in your travels did Shawn know the synth detective knew the dog it is stated for a very hard and undeniable fact that he wanted you to find Kellogg so what was his [ __ ] plan for you to find Kellogg if there was no dog at this point it's a dog itself a synth no no I don't even want to go there did they find a pre-war vault full of frozen dogs to face this dog off of it's not like you could just wait for Kellogg to return home he's prepared at us for it and notes you're coming I guess it's just really can you match the fight a dog that could sniff out Kellogg like that you face off against the human enhanced by cybernetic augments and has had literally a century to perfect his craft and you somehow come out on top and take a piece of his brain as a prize I guess Shawn would have known Kellogg basically all of his life and I assume for a large part of it he'd be ordering Kellogg around surely he'd know Kellogg wouldn't reveal Institute secrets right then what is the plan for you to go from dealing with Kellogg to getting inside the Institute besides simply killing this guy for vengeance how does this help us plan at all did Sean expect you to take the frame piece and access its memories does even know if this is possible or not was this part of his plan - wait hold up the Shawn knows about the memory den which is my assumption here why don't he also know that the railroad uses it to help escape sense and therefore know how to get to the railroad since your only lead is dead you've got the prance through his memories for any info you can find the VR loungers at the memory dinner powerful enough to do this on their own so Nick plugs into it as well to lend extra power it sure is a good thing the only friendly sim from the entire Commonwealth is not only still alive still intact enough to do this but also completely willing to do it if Nick wasn't around would there be an alternate way of doing this so you go through kelex memories it sure is a good thing the single most important memory is still intact the one with your only lead forward it's also a really good thing that no memories exist from within the Institute itself you know maybe Cal are talking with Shawn at some point or something so now you go to the glowing sea to meet virtual it's a good thing he's still alive - considering he's on the Institute's hit list and managed to avoid all the various wasteland monsters on the way especially the deathclaw sleeping outside his cave it's also a good thing he's willing to help blah blah Blee killer courser and get the chip and now we need it decoded something virtual can't do but the railroad can did Shawn planned for this - I I really don't know anymore I feel like my [ __ ] brain is melting from having to deal with all the stupid [ __ ] Virgil's a biologist so maybe Shawn expected him to not know but did he know the railroad had this knowledge and ability if so why didn't they already kill a course or a chip all right it's important to them after all and the lead-up to the fight with him he's basically presented it's the [ __ ] terminator just tearing through Gunners like they're nothing so you'd expect them to be tough but the rule road hasn't found a way to counter them yet I guess not I've been trying not to skip ahead I have to here if you side with the Minutemen Institute we'll attack the castle without Koz no less and send in an army of synths including numerous coarser agents yet they don't do nearly as much damage to your forces here as one did against the Gunners anyways Shawn platter Phyllis how did he know the railroad would even help us what if they couldn't what if they're obvious hideout got raided already and they were all dead what if this guy hadn't randomly vouched for you when he has no real reason to do so wait how does he know I killed a courser again wait if the Institute is really careful through tech but why do the gunners and railroad even know what a courser is wait one walk through Diamond City apparently no one noticed this what if the railroad turned you away or worse yet killed you for knowing their location what was the plan here you bring the relay code - Virgil and he has the blueprints drawn up for you how does a biologist know how to drop highly advanced technological blueprints for a goddamn teleporter did Sean know this guy could drop blueprints like this what's this part of his plan did he know one of his scientists would go rogue and leave the Institute finally you teleport into the Institute and confront leader he plays a cruel trick on you by presenting you with a ten year old Shawn who turns out to be a fake before appearing face to face with you I think the most amazing thing here is the fact a dinner expect to shower bullets at this point he didn't try to explain himself from a place of safety he just walks out in the flesh before you and expected everything to turn out well this really varies on person to person but really I'm also surprised this game actually allows you to choice even kill him here since bethesda has the obnoxious trend of making Hasler NPCs unkillable it's one of the few actual choices you can make in this game but even then there isn't any real impact from it either way if you don't side with the Institute you go to war with them whether you like it or not but no really the only reason any of this is possible is entirely through coincidence what was the plan to get you from the vaults to the Institute if there's what's his actual plan and that means Shawn had to have planned all this out to the smallest detail getting all the pieces in the right places Nick dogmeat Virgil the railroad Kellogg Kellogg's piece of brain everything if he can do all that and he's really playing some 10 dimensional chess here has far greater influence and power and foresight than should be possible especially since none of this being planned out is ever mentioned he just says he released you from the vault in hopes you'd make it to the Institute an impossible task in literally any other situation as well as killing Kellogg it is not unrealistic that he may have set up a series of breadcrumbs to lead you to the Institute if you're smart enough to find them it is unrealistic for a massive series of coincidences to take place to reach the same point despite there being seemingly no thought put into this beyond Kellogg is bait which itself isn't fully thought out he somehow has absolutely every possible element in the perfect place for you to eventually reach the Institute despite how easily everything could have gone wrong or how you could reach a dead end if a single thing were out of place hell Nicholas held prisoner by the Mafia what if they decided to kill him no dog no way to track Khalid from his apartment no rogue scientist no way to find out about the course or chip and build the teleporter relay blew up Kellogg's head no brain chunk tantor left Kellogg learned of this plan to kill him and went rogue what if he teleported into the Institute and killed Shawn for trying to trick him into getting killed it's a really good thing Shawn exists in a universe where logic doesn't exist and characters just do things to progress the plot in this very specific way and with that I'm gonna end the video here there's still a lot more to cover we've really only barely scratched the surface but I do not know when the next video will be out thank you for sticking with it to the end further as we did [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
