A BETTER WAY To Collect Your THATCH - Dethatching and Overseeding

that was a good idea [Music] all right the backyard projects continue today and i am going to be using this guy in the backyard this is a gas powered power rake or d thatcher scarf however you want to describe it it has been five years since i've done this in the backyard and when i did this five years ago i had quite a bit of material come out of the grass 17 55 gallon trash bags completely filled along with my normally used green waste recycling bin that the city provides me so got a lot of work to do today i've got this thing for four hours and i'm gonna oversee the backyard today too now speaking of backyard projects just a quick update on the putting green here you can see we've got some new grass growing in here five days after i seeded this this was seeded a week ago today's day seven so two days ago i came out here and this big thick area that you see coming in right here i saw that coming through on day five so that bent grass is no joke it germinates fast it grows in quick and if you get real close and look around and most of the areas you can see we're doing really well and i'm really excited about this this area here on this corner this one got washed out a little bit on day one i adjusted the sprinkler head behind that one and i adjusted the one on the other side so it would only go in this part of the grass there's a sprinkler head over here that was hitting the putting green and washing it out so i might have to do some reseeding there i'm going to give it a little bit more time there are a little bit of seedlings coming through but overall pretty exciting now normally i would just go ahead and take my sun joe d thatcher and scarfire like i did to my front yard knock it out get it done but the backyard is just so big i need something a little more powerful a little more freedom without having to deal with a power cord and something a little beefier so i rented this at my local home depot today and it was like sixty dollars for four hours so these things are pretty cool let me show you the underside of it and kind of give you a little bit of a difference between something like this and something like the sun joe's so here's what's going on underneath you've got these tines very similar to the sun joe the scar fire attachment anyways but these are loose and there's two sets of them they come around and they spin around and around and whip around with the momentum that the motor provides and they'll just dig in and clear things out there are 28 of these compared to maybe half of that maybe on the sun gel and the sun joe's tines are fixed and these are movable they get whipped around as i said so that's the difference there's a lot more power that comes out of this and it's wider than the sun joe as well so we can cover a little bit more ground a little bit faster so the sun joes that you've seen me use before in the past those are really good for smaller yards if you have i would say probably no more than three thousand square feet anything over three thousand square feet you want to get something like this and anything over probably 10 or 15 000 square feet you want to consider maybe something you tow along your lawn tractor or something like that so i have about eight thousand eighty five hundred square feet back here give or take and this is going to get the job done for me today i'm kind of excited to do this [Music] all right somebody left a comment sw i think was their username on my last dethatching video from the front yard they said how would a lawn sweeper work like one of these guys i don't know if you've seen one of these before but it's got these little plastic sweeps underneath that will sweep things up into this collection bag and then you can just dump it into wherever so i'll go ahead and start with this and give it a shot and see how it goes and anything that's left over time master will take care of it [Music] well all there is to say about this guy is wow that was a good idea shout out to sw for that idea i did go through five full bags and then i started a new one so i've emptied the toro bag once into that garbage can so about a third of the material that i got the first time i ever did this but still pretty impressive always satisfying to pull out all that material and get it out of the way and now i'm ready to have a nap but in all seriousness i do need to um overseed this and i want to fertilize it and i want to get some organic material out here as well all right got all of my stuff here ready to go i've got my seed and i've got some peat moss this i'm gonna use on spot repair areas kind of like that there that's grub damage and there's a couple other spots around the yard too that are just going to get spot filled like that i've got my fertilizer here that i'm going to use as a starter fertilizer this is pro peat it's a 7414 and that is gonna be nice because it's also gonna have peat moss with it because it's all coated in peat moss and then in addition to that organic matter i'm gonna have this biochar kin from yard mastery this is my first time using this curious to see what this looks like but this is just soil amendment it's all organic matter and that's gonna go over the whole backyard so all this stuff it's going down train [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right that is gonna go ahead and wrap it up for today big long busy day almost seven hours in the yard today and that was just the backyard i didn't even touch the front yard but we have the power raking done overseed fertilizer biocharging soil amendment
