what's up welcome back to the channel my name's Sam if you don't today I'm going to teach you guys how I mix my rap rolls this video is brought to you by district it in this day and age independent musicians see multiple sources of income and streaming revenue is a great way to earn some extra money district it is a music distribution service if you're an independent musician this is how you get your music onto big streaming platforms like Spotify Apple music Amazon and much more this joke it starts at $20 and you can upload as much music as you want for the year I've tried a few distribution platforms and this one is by far my favorite if you're a producer making music for artists or just collabing with other producers this show kid has a really helpful feature for royalty splits once you sort out the percentages all the money that's generated will go directly into your account but easily my favorite part about distro kid is that it's so much faster than other distribution platforms as a youtuber after upload pretty consistently but it's super helpful that it can upload a beat on to distro kit and have it out the next day so it doesn't affect my youtube schedule now it's already really affordable but you can sign up with a 7% discount if you use my code in the description I just want to let you know that everything I'm gonna tell you is just a suggestion there's not really a right way to mix music the same way there's not really a definitive way to make beats there are things that work better than others but you should come to those conclusions yourself and these are things that personally work for me so before we start mixing the most important thing to have is a good vocal recording so I recorded my vocals with this ass and spirit right there so and if you look at my project you can see I did tons and tons of vocal takes to get it exactly how I wanted so this is comping and it's pretty much just cutting out your favorite parts of every vocal take that you did and I'm pretty nit picky so there's a couple but this is the final vocal take so for my vocal chain I use a lot of fabfilter and universal audio but today I'm gonna show you how to do all this with just stock plugins in FL Studio but if you understand the concept of these mixing plugins you can apply this to any DAW okay let's listen to these vocals dry first so the first thing I put is an EQ over this all sounds are made up of frequencies there's high frequencies and low frequencies and this EQ helps you adjust those frequencies really accurately so these red lights are indicating where the frequencies are most present the first thing I'm gonna do is put a low-cut just to get rid of this muddy bottom end so I'm going to listen to the vocals along with the track and when it gets too much then I'm gonna dial it back a bit the next thing I'm going to use is Maximus and I'm gonna use it as a de-esser if you don't know what that is a lot of the s-sounds that is really hard sometimes so all it's doing is turning that specific frequency down you just have to go to the s or narrow split end so whenever I say s on the vocals I'm looking for that frequency range bringing in the for sabe cut throat with the tub blows okay now I'm just going to turn it down it's a really subtle difference but it's gonna help a lot when you make the track louder okay so the next thing I'm going to put is a compressor okay so if you don't know what a compressor does at some point in an audio clip there's low volume and at other points is a high volume so a compressor compresses the audio to make it more even so the threshold is zero right now and since my vocals don't go to zero I'm gonna turn it down to maybe thirty five ish I'm gonna turn this ratio up like this much no everything's quieter so I'm just gonna bring up this gain a bunch I'm a knight I'm a noble I'm a cold folksy and no shows anytime I bring in the for sabe cut cut throat with the tough blows I ain't John snow but it's a ride so they call me King in the north got the whole squad business that's sounding that's sounding a lot better already the next thing I'm gonna put in some saturation and it kind of just makes everything more colorful this is a free plug-in called saturation knob is just one knob that you turn up like this no bull I'm a cold folksy and obviously if you go too high you're gonna distort it so I'm just gonna do a little bit no bull I'm a cold folksy and no shows anytime I bring in the for sabe cut throat with the tough blows I ain't John snow but it's a rod so they call me King in the north got the whole squad reason enough for banners that's one option but if you don't have that you can use fruity fast to start anytime I bring in the for sabe cutthroat with the tub blows I ain't John snow but it's alright so they call me King in the north got the whole squad raising up the banners we had to premiere you go see a Mike the Valor got the face also make sure you guys are listening to the vocals with the track because you know the vocals can sound good by itself but that doesn't matter as much as how it sounds with the instrumental the next thing I'm gonna put in is a little bit of reverb so I'm turning the wet up the dry down I'm gonna put a high cut all the way up I'm gonna bring the size of the room down and bring it the K down now all I'm doing is moving this dry/wet knob until I find that sweet spot and I'm not going for too much reverb in this one bring in the for sabe cutthroat with the tub blows I ain't John snow but in Toronto they call me King in the north that's a good amount so well I'm a cold bossy and no shows anytime I bring in the boss savvy cutthroat with the tub blows I ain't John snow but it's alright so the next thing I'm using is a fruity limiter to make a gate if you're not in a good recording environment little quiet parts like this might have an electrical buzz or some kind of hum and the gate is pretty much turning off all the sound when it goes under a certain volume so the gate is now zero so anything under this line is going to be turned off nobody the rock salt atomic taken so all I'm doing is making it really really low so I still have the vocals but just all that noise in between it is gone and John snow but it's a rod so they call me King in the north got the whole squad racing up the banners we had to permit you go seeing like the valley there's certain parts of my vocals where I take a really big breath like here I'm like it's like an asthma attack in those cases it's best to just delete them the last thing I'm doing is putting a second EQ over this we made the vocals a lot louder so there might be a couple of weird frequencies that stick out so we're just gonna look for them and kind of just duct them down I'm just making a band like this making it nice and narrow and then we're gonna listen for the bad frequencies I'm a knight I'm a noble Lama cold fuzzy and no shows anytime I bring in the four Sabich don't like that let's turn it down just a little bit I don't know about the whole lying palace take my talents head over to South Beach turn it to the Maltese y'all gonna know the feet when I said the frogs in locust tree all these leeches bought and feed and no one standing over me and that's pretty much it for the verses so when I'm mixing my hook I make the vocal chain pretty much exactly the same as the verse but I put one effect on it to make it stand out a bit more in this case I put in a bit more saturation and I also put in this echo I am The King I am the code I am the law I am DOS also I duplicated the vocals and pitched them down at some points and the last thing I'll show you is how I mix the ad-libs they're not really ad-libs I'm kind of just repeating the same line over just to emphasize emphasize if I if I got bars okay so this is what it sounds like dry okay so why did first is just put a bunch of reverb on it so it chills in the back I'm putting an EQ over it to get rid of the low-end very similar to the vs. I'm putting a really strong compressor on it I'm putting in the saturation knob as you can see the knob is all the way up but then I turned the dry/wet pretty much to half so it's not too harsh and then I'm putting in some delay which I automate with this and then the last thing I did was exported it with a lot of reverb so it has this reverse riser kind of thing cut throat with the tough blows I ain't John snow but it's a rod so they call me King in the North kinda yeah so that's pretty much everything let's listen to the full track seeing no shows anytime I bring in the boys sabi cut throat with the tough blows I ain't John snow but it's a ride so they call me King in the north got the whole swamp is enough to panis we had to permit you go see like the gala you got the fake sprain in between my talents keep the Iron Throne about the hole on your palace take my talents head oh but the South Beach turn it to the Maltese y'all gonna defeat when I set the function Logan straight for these beaches father Peter Noah standing over me fire-breathing Davis humans like a boat a compress toppy working half to death till I ain't got nothing left to my I see no more threats I'm about to end the game I'm gonna get the hands on deck we gonna take the sadness pain turns over supposed to my chest I'm a Kaiser I'm a condom the kingpin hand got another on the dye number Spartan I'm a sovereign of a sudden number sorry I'm the one true ruler of the mob boy I am The King I am the code I am the law I am The Boss the one on top by the phone this is the code now let it be known I am the mob I run the streets head of the state commander-in-chief I am the widette upon to their knees this is my deep dream thank you so much
