they came back with a vengeance and they tripled their revenue from 750 million dollars a year to 2.3 billion a year [Music] what's up guys my name's levi this is shred shop connecting you to skateboarding and today we're doing nine skate brands that came back from the dead here's the thing the skateboard industry is a fickle beast one minute you're hot one minute you're not some of these guys might have been the hugest brands and then died overnight other versions of them kind of sucked died and then came back even stronger and most of us can agree that some of the brands on this list left and came back the inbred versions of themselves we're talking cross eyes baby ten fingers on one hand three rows of teeth talking one-eyed people they probably had sasquatch back here and of course the worst one of them all audi belly buttons if you enjoy these videos make sure you like subscribe and comment it helps us give you the content that you love and we love making it airwalk this one's an interesting story because pretty much every business school teaches about the rise and fall of airwalk where they went wrong it's a cautionary tale of how even goliath can fall the thing is airwalk started as a very niche skateboard company they were focused on making skate shoes for skateboarders giving back to the skateboard community the very first ever trade show that they went to they pre-booked over a million dollars in shoes and the first two pro model shoes that they dropped were with jason lee and tony hawk both those guys first pro model shoot they had one of the biggest teams in skateboarding they grew from a 16 million company in 1993 to an over 200 million company in 1995. that's right they were the third biggest shoe company in the entire world right behind nike and adidas that means they were bigger than puma and converse vans reebok whatever you name it they were third in line they're pretty lucky that crocs hadn't been conceived at this time because they would have been first in line baby sadly in the late 90s they turned their back on skateboarding you don't turn your back on family they moved their headquarters from california to pennsylvania even tony hawk who was pro for them at the time said he could barely get a hold of them to get shoes to skate in them they moved into the lifestyle world and they didn't care about the mcsqueeze it didn't take very long for even the ugliest of people to not wear these stupid shoes they really diarrheaed their diapers and they got bought out by payless shoes payless had them on their back though for about five seconds went out of business came back from the dead payless did went out of business came back from the dead eventually airwalk got bought out by authentic brands group and they label themselves as a skateboard company we want to so badly believe it because we're talking jason lee and tony hawk but if you go to their website it is painfully obvious they have no clue what's going on we're talking people who are mall grabbing in the ads people are pushing belly button rings on dudes even guys with mustaches you know those kind where they don't trim their nose hair and it kind of kind of connects and goes over and then they're constantly eating their snot that's the type of people that are in these at the thing is they want to hang out with skaters but they miss the mark they're teaming up with fashion streetwear brands trying to market to skaters doesn't make any sense boomers much next up s footwear after the success of etnies in 1986 of being the first skater owned and operated shoe company they did so well that they decided to do a more technical shoe brand under the same umbrella s footwear in 1995. they launch it with a super team of sal barbier bob bernquist ronnie krieger tom penny eric costin and my favorite chad musco s came out and they were really devoted to creating technically advanced skateboard shoes which were really popular at the time although fast forward to 2011 you go to a skate shop the whole shoe wall black and white vulcanized skate shoes it all blended in like camouflage it was a really boring time for skateboard footwear and so it was a really tough time for any sort of technical footwear brand to be around no one gave them any love and so in 2011 unfortunately s skateboarding posted that they were gone skateboarding and they died shot by vulcanized we never saw s again bound up in a garbage bag tied up dropped off in the gulf of mexico psych dead bodies float baby s skateboarding coming back ripping off the garbage bags 2014 they decided they were done sleeping and their murderer vulcanized shoes are still out on the loose which team are you on murder mystery baby who done it was it colonel janoski in the ballroom with the candlestick or was it steve van doren in the study with the rope but either way s is back and the reason that they're crushing it is because of the two good canadian boys tj rogers and wade desarmo next on the list ccs ccs was founded in 1985 in san luis obispo originally called california cheapskates and they were one of the original mail order companies you could find their ads in the back of every skateboard magazine the thing is if you're over 25 you've been there you got the mag you're looking through it you pull out the ad steal your mom's checkbook forge the signature no big deal not illegal mail it off the duds over there they picked it up a few months later you're getting a tony ferguson pro model shoe and a ccs brand pair of tighty whities let's go i don't know if you guys ever did this but when you ordered the ccs catalog you could put a different name underneath where the address is so we all did it we wrote in there some really special names next thing you know your parents are getting mail for turd ferguson ivana humpalot and phil mccracken as things changed the internet eventually came around and ccs went out of business unfortunately and then in the year 2000 an internet company called alloy bought the name ccs for 53 million dollars pocket change and then eight years later in 2008 foot locker approached them bought out the brand for 103 million dollars in cash tell me all you drug dealers how many duffel bags is that and then after six years of properly managing their investment in 2014 foot locker blew it and said that ccs is no more 103 million lit on fire basically one of the major things that put ccs out of the business is that foot locker decided to open up stores they're used to selling jordans and big baggy old swishy pens but they decided to put vans in a mall store where people don't want to buy sand and sun shoes and it just didn't work later that same year daddy's longboards comes along gives a cuff up the side ahead of foot locker and says hey baby give me a kiss and they bought the brand for pennies on the dollar now the brand of ccs is extremely successful they do tens of millions of dollars worth of business every year and they've done a really good job at approaching skateboarders and skateboard culture to build back into the community next metropolitan metropolitan was a small wheel company out of deluxe they ended up not doing so well with sales and spitfire was absolutely crushing it so they decided to shut the doors on metropolitan and keep spitfire going many years later keith huffnagel of huff went and brought metropolitan back from the dead and made it into a really cool streetwear company out of new york next up plan b skateboards originally founded in 1991 by mike turnowski the team consisted of guys like danny way rodney mullen colin mckay mike carroll matt hensley rick howard and our guy pat duff they let out legendary videos like questionable secondhand smoke and virtual reality but sadly in 1994 mike ternaski tragically passes away in a car accident during that time and for the next few years the skaters and mike chernowski's wife tried to keep it alive they ended up releasing another video called the revolution in 1997. they had tried to keep it alive but everyone realized that its time had come and they moved on to different opportunities in 2005 danny way and colin mckay relaunched plan b skateboards under syndrome distribution it was the second time it launched with a massive super team this time it included ryan sheckler paul rodriguez ryan winning pj ladd ryan gallant pat duff and obviously danny and colin the thing is it's 2022 now and the brand is still going strong next up stereo skateboard in 1992 chris pastors and jason lee start their very own board brand on her deluxe it ends up changing distribution and eventually going under as both of them move on to different opportunities and then in 2013 jason and chris came back together and decided to relaunch the brand next up van originally launching in 1966 vans was quickly adopted as the socal shoe brand they also launched the first ever skater design shoe they signed stacy peralta with the first ever skateboard shoe deal and they played a huge part in skateboard history in 1982 fast times at ridgemont high is released you know that movie jeff's jess jeff piccoli is just jeff's oh my gosh jeff suggests um holy holy jeff spicoli is caught wearing vans listen listen up wait a minute there's no birthday party here advanced sales go from 20 million to 45 million dollars that year fast forward only two years and vans is filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy the firm declared super duper bankruptcy and that was in advance no one ever heard of him ever again and it's sad that bran died in comes kids psych they end up paying back all their debts in just three years which is pretty quick if you didn't know and the original owners ended up selling the brand an investment firm mccowan de luinco bought vans for 74 million dollars in 1988 in 2004 they get bought out by vf corp that's vanity fair corporation that's who owns them today they own companies like timberland wranglers north face even supreme vf corp bought it for 396 million dollars from 2008 to 2016 they tripled their revenue from 750 million dollars per year to 2.3 billion dollars per year so again who's ever heard of vans though right the thing is there's articles saying this is the fastest growth ever in the shoe industry again in comes crocs let's go he's gonna fill my crocs the thing is we are thankful because vans pour so much money back into the skateboard industry from non-profits to events they're going out they're giving back to communities all over the world people are wearing their shoes because vans is a dope brand next on the list nike skateboard shoes nike has kind of an up and down path they've tried to get into skateboarding more than once originally nike skateboarding shoes they kind of look like potatoes not even good like marshmallows like we're talking like tainted old potatoes you know the ones that grow roots and are in the back of your grandma's cupboard those type of shoes one of their models was even called the chode the shoes were so bad that even ben margera their star professional athlete at that time he said in interviews that he used to wear s excels and then he would glue a nike swoosh to the side nike skateboard shoes died pretty quickly and then in the year 2000 nike gave it another go and they bought out portland local skateboard shoe company savier skate shoes if you didn't know anything about those shoes they kind of were this urethane rubber kind of hybrid so they were meant to last for a while but with that some of the designs looked like plastic potatoes rather than organic potatoes so still not good the brand died really quickly in the words of the absolute goddess kelly clarkson what doesn't kill you makes you stronger nike taken after this singer and they're going back in 2002 nike sb start this is the one that works and sticks a lot of the success of the reason why it worked is because of sandy beaudecker he was an employee at nike and he turned the eyes back to where skateboard shoes started and that was with the dunks fast forward to today nike sb is still pretty strong but in recent years they have cut a lot of their team riders and 50 of the skate shops that sold them what does this mean i don't really know are they going to air walk themselves or are they too big to fail either way they still have huge team riders like nija ashad yuto shane o'neal tons of other big guys let us know in the comments below what do you think this means for nike and the shoe industry itself next on the list fallen footwear from america to audio to circa in 2003 jamie thomas decides to leave and start his own footwear brand fallen footwear he gets backing from dc to launch the initial line of shoes and he starts with a team of himself chris cole billy marks and josh harmony in 2008 they released their premiere video ride the sky and then after that they released a travel documentary called road less travel but with the huge push of sports footwear companies in skateboarding it became harder and harder for a core shoe brand to exist and to survive and unfortunately in 2016 fallen had fallen and then in 2018 their distribution brand in argentina bought them out and relaunched the brand and so it's back when they relaunched the brand they brought back a few of their heritage team writers like tommy sandoval chris cole billy marks and tony cervantes next on the list super footwear supra means above in latin the reason they called it this is because when they launched the brand they launched it with premium materials and kind of a brand that was above the rest a little bit more elite super footwear founder angel cabada had already launched a few very successful brands like tsa and crew he starts supra and he builds it with an amazing team including chad muska eric ellington jim greco tom penny antoine dixon and many more the brand evolved and grew a little bit you could see celebrities like jay-z justin bieber lil wayne and so many more wearing these shoes chad muska designed so many of his own shoes with terry kennedy eric allen's and all these other pro models that were on there that were iconic for the time it had moved kind of into a streetwear direction while still not leaving skateboarding behind they did both very well and then in 2015 crew and supra were sold to k-swiss five stripes if you remember k-swiss tried to break into skateboarding at one point with greg lutzka as their only team writer and then we don't really know what happened with the brand so in 2021 all of k-swiss gets bought out by a chinese holding company and supra comes back in a new different way and then fast forward to today they have a full new website it looks like they have influencers kind of repping the brand and they brought back a lot of the old shoe models while not designing anything new there's no skate team it is not skater ran that's for sure but on the website they try to involve skateboarding in some way or another basically trying to take their piece of the pie with doing literally nothing for skateboarding next up pal peralta when skateboard engineer george powell meets stacey peralta they get together and they form palparelta they build possibly the most iconic and memorable skateboard team ever with tony hawk rodney mullen tommy guerrero lance mountain frankie hill mike mcgill steve cab and many more this is the bones brigade steve kab said in a nine club interview that in his best year ever of board royalties it was 1987 on pao peralta he made over 250 000 that's at a dollar board and i'm not the best at math but he probably sold over a million boards fast forward to the early 90s just a few years later and george powell and stacey peralta have a falling out pal peralta is no more cap said at that time he didn't even have a pro board anymore with them because they said he wasn't marketable and the brand stayed around still but it changed from paul peralta back down to powell and then around 20 years later in 2012 they're filming a bones brigade documentary lance mountain approaches stacy peralta and george paolo and he convinces them to give their friendship another try from that paolo peralta has started once again and with the power of nostalgia and beefing up their team paolo peralta is one of the biggest and best-selling board brands out there especially with us canadian homie andy anderson changed the game [Applause] that's it for the top nine but before you go there's an honorable mention for the brands that came back from the dead but they didn't make it on our list ghetto child wheels new deal skateboards action footwear eltamont clothing dc shoes habitat an alien workshop mystery
