of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit as we continue our journey our land and journey we are reminded that we need to do our own part in this in proclaiming our devotion to our lord and at the same time doing little things little steps to respond to his call as we celebrate this mass we also continue to pray for peace in the world especially in ukraine that peace justice may reign we pray for people who are suffering and all those victims of this war to celebrate worthily this eucharist we ask god's mercy and pardon have mercy on us o lord for we have sinned against you show us our lord your mercy and grant us your salvation may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray show gracious favor o lord we pray to the works of penance we have begun that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the bodily observances we undertake through our piety to express their devotion to god they have these three pillars now prayer fasting and almsgiving and we find in the bible the teaching and practice of these in both readings today we find the teaching about fasting abstaining from food in isaiah fasting is not seen as a kind of a parenthesis in one's daily life nor an occasion to pay in merits for oneself from god and with which we can demand a better treatment later on from god rather he attaches a new and deeper meaning of this fasting the fasting that is authentic according to prophet isaiah is that which leads us to an encounter with god with the god of love through our brothers and sisters who have been reached by our charity our love it is that which makes us experience god's providence through the needy we have helped it is that which is translated spontaneously in gestures of fraternal love and thus it leads to a continual discovery of god the fountain of light that soothes our spiritual wounds that is how the prophet isaiah understands and proposes this kind of fasting to his contemporaries we normally associate fasting with the reduction of food intake which is our world even recommends today from health and other aesthetic reasons that we reduce eating our eating but isaiah understands fasting in this new way that we need to reduce the things that damage and oppress others and promote justice on behalf of those in need jesus in the gospel like isaiah proposes a new understanding of fasting jesus said that fasting is not done when the bridegroom is with them no one abstains from the joys when the wedding is being celebrated it is a way of saying that fasting is seen only as is seen not only as an abstinence of food it should be experienced should not be experienced only in a negative way the true fasting is that which makes us desire and long for that encounter with jesus the savior who ignites and intensifies in us the hunger and thirst for god's word the desire to know christ more and his power to give us life therefore an authentic fasting according to jesus is that which brings us to a personal and intense encounter and communion with christ which will enable us to face the temptations of everyday life in summary fasting is a way of reminding ourselves of our need to cultivate this closer and deeper encounter with the lord who alone can satisfy our longing for a meaningful life and ultimately who can save us and this season of lent is a journey reminding us of this essential dimension of our life our need to encounter the lord i do not know if you are aware that we have still the the so-called eucharistic fast meaning one hour now it is only one hour before holy communion that we should abstain from food again with that idea of creating a space in ourselves in our hearts for christ even in short in simple ways like fasting for an hour before the reform of body can do i think it was 12 hours now you have to fast but they have reduced this to make it more accessible for people especially those who have been difficulties because again to remind us of our need for christ in our life and may our lenten observance bring us closer to christ to encounter him and also in our encounter with those who are in need amen by fasting we give god space in our lives let us ask the lord to strengthen us in self-denial that we may set our minds and hearts firmly on him for every prayer let our response be lord our true joy is in you lord our true joy is in you that as a follower of christ we may conform to the precepts of our heavenly father we pray lord our true joy is in you that god's people may persevere in their land and sacrifice us we pray lord our true joy is sinner that all who deny themselves for the lord's sikhs may find happiness with him we pray lord our true joy that the sick and the dying and those who are spaced with life's sorrow may be filled with god's grace we pray lord our true joy in you that our disease relatives and friends may freely share in the life of god we pray lord our true joy is in you and for peace justice in our world especially in ukraine and russia we pray to the lord lord our true joy is in you and for our own personal intentions we pray lord our true joy is in you heavenly father grant us the strength to devote ourselves to a life in the spirit that we may rise now above our weaknesses and
