(dramatic drumming) - [Inmate]l There's a turd
on the floor right there. - It's coming out our
toilets and our showers. - They are working on it! - You hear how they treat us. - You can't even flush this,
and it keeps backing up. - Bring your mat and your
blanket, and let's roll. - [Woman] I don't care
how bad ass you are, classification is
gonna scare you. (women yelling) (alarm buzzing) - [Sheriff] Moving 300
inmates is never easy. - Keep going. - I'm on the edge. These people here, they
make you wanna hit them. - I was smacking his
ass, I swear to God, bro. I'm not playing. (dramatic music) - This is complete
chaos right now. - Listen to what I'm saying! (intense fast music) (men yelling) - It is (beep) up in here! - I keep (beep) telling them, and they're not listening to me. They're not (beep)
listening to me. - They only
understand one thing. Violence. (intense rhythmic music) - About eight months ago,
they put a water line in, we don't know if they hit it, but the sewer line
actually crushed underneath the street here, somewhere. So that's why we got
the water off right now. That I don't know. - Having a sewer line break
anywhere is a bad situation, but having it happen in jail, that effects have the
inmate population, could potentially
make it dangerous. - Because it's a
hostile environment. - [Producer] Okay. - Don't go farther
than you have to, just be a little
bit more cautious. Please, at least
at arm's length. You know, you could
swing that if you had to. I'd stay close to the door. Here's what I would (mumbles). -Oh (beep). - At least go back
to the dorm and... - No. - And watch TV or...
- No, no you can't. - Not until the water's fixed. - You cannot go back
until it's all fixed, that's end of conversation. The Chief's said that,
that's the way it's gonna be. - They're in no rush
to take us back. It's less work they have to do. As you can see, they can
sit on the computer all day, get on the internet, and it's
pretty convenient for them, you know, they don't
have to do anything. (intense drumming music) - They told us to do
what we're told to do and shut our mouths, I
think that's the standard instruction around here. - It's a unique environment,
it's like a really bad camping trip with a bunch
of violent, homeless people with drug charges. No one had had a shower,
they smelled like sewage. - I will explain to
you the rules, okay. I only have to give you
a shower every third day. I'm doing my best, there's
nothing more I can do. - Having to use one restroom,
what I would consider a basic human right, they
consider a privilege. So maybe I'm just not up to
date on what human beings deserve, but they
should've given us water. - I'm dehydrated,
I'm light headed. (intense rhythmic music) - Everybody sit down. - (Mumbles). - Sit down. - I ain't never been
no place like this. I can't wait to
get away from it, because I ain't
ever coming back. - Sit down! (dramatic eerie music) Gentlemen, I'm gonna ask
you one more time, sit down! - As a state policeman
for 30 years, what really upset me was
the lack of leadership, the lack of competency, and
the apathy of the senior staff. (man laughing) - I'm trying to
heat up some water. - I would blame most of the
spikes in drama on stress. They didn't give us any definite
answers, any time frames, they didn't say anything, they were just like
sit in your bunks. - You notice, they'll
try to come to that door bare minimum, because they
know gonna get the same question asked, when
we gonna get it fixed? Well we don't know neither,
we don't give a damn. Ya'll just sit in there
and chill, hang out, bunk up and stink up. Everybody smell like the
same (beep) everyday (beep). - I'm not gonna lie, if
the inmates in this jail wanted to rise up and
take over the jail, and take out all the
guards, it's gonna happen. (intense building music) - Because these
bitches are (beep). (dramatic rhythmic music) - I was up all night
long, all night long. You're in someone else's
house here, they had to take you in like you're a
homeless pet or something. - I don't understand
this, it's ridiculous, it's like a daycare, get
the (beep) out of here. - We don't wanna be here,
they don't want us in here. - Shut the (beep) up. Oh my God, put your hair
up and don't touch nobody. 3F family, I've just
been informed, the bee hulls are here! - What? - Are you (beep)
serious, oh (beep) great. - And she's like,
the girl had lice. As soon as she said
that, we're all like, everybody search
each others heads. Everybody was so paranoid and
looking at each others head. It was nuts. - God. - Everybody was
freaking out, no, we're not doing lice in here. - It's like that everyday,
they wake up screaming, they go to bed, they
wake up again screaming. I'm so sick of it,
everyday, I hate it. - I'm not feeling this at all, good God could
this get any worse. - Until coming here, we
don't realize how good we actually have it over there. Like this sucks,
this is terrible. We don't know for sure,
but they did say that it was still flooded over there, and to not place our bets on
being able to go back today. (dramatic dark music) (fast rhythmic music) - We don't have anything
to give them to drink, what do we do? Guys here's the deal, they
brought the chow up, they didn't bring
anything to drink, because we don't have water. - Can we at least go
back to our pod then, so we can at least
get our phones. - No, it's got off there too. I can't move you, this is
where we're at for right now. - [Man] Can we get
the Sheriff then? - We're doing one thing at
time, we have nothing to drink, that's what I'm
trying to tell you. Well we're trying
to get something up I guess bring it on over. - Been up here for two days, we haven't been able to
shower for almost three days. It feels worse than a
refugee camp because a refugee camp they actually
give you bottled water and stuff, and they
refuse to give us water. - Okay, listen up and
I'll explain it to you! (men screaming) I keep trying to tell you all... - [Man] She got that
strap, she got that gun! - Who's got a mouth? I will light this whole
(beep) up in here, you understand me? I tried to come in and explain
to you what was going on, and you all wanna
be (beep) (beep). You wanna run your
mouth about something, we'll go out here and run it. - "So you wanna yell now?,
Yell one more time, say one more thing", aiming the
gun at every body and (beep), and so everybody like
oh, oh, oh, chill, chill. - Now they had to go in and
they had to shut it all off. And they have to fix it,
I don't know when they're going to do it,
it's not the jail, it's the Indiana Water Company. We don't have anything
to do with that, we can't make them hurry,
we can't make them rush. They didn't even work
through the night. There's nothing I can do. - Treat us like
grown ass people, and maybe you'll get
a grown ass response. They get mad at us and
stuff when we complain, like, it's unsanitary,
but you know what, ain't nobody give a (beep)
because we criminals. Sick of this (beep) man. - Tensions are high,
there's things that happen that are unpredictable. We'll do as best we can, and
we'll get the sewer fixed, and we'll go on running a jail. (light solemn music) (light sobbing) - Sorry. It's like you all ready
in a terrible situation, and they do nothing about it. Man, (beep) I gotta just
suffer through this. I don't know how much
more of this I can take. (intense dark music) (woman talking lightly) - I didn't realize that I
had been bitten by something, or something had happened
to the back of my leg. I was like that's
weird, I went to feel. I'm like there's
something there. Some sort of swelling or bite. And I'm like (beep),
something's not right. - [Jailer] Does it itch? - Yes. - Does it hurt. - It stings. The guard who
actually looked at it, wrote a note, put my name on it, said what it was, and said
I'll take this medical for you, but I'm gonna be
honest with you, she's probably not
gonna see you because it's not an emergency right now, and there's a million
other things going on. - That's not right. - That's not a settling
feeling, you know, it's very unsettling. (dramatic rhythmic music) - Go ahead and pack yourself. - Are we going back home. - You are, pack your stuff! - The sewers have been replaced, the water's back up and running. It couldn't have came too
soon with the inmates, when you bring them out
of their daily routine, you tend to have
certain problems. Now we get to get the inmates
back to their sections that they're originally from, and get back to normal
operations here. - [Man] Everybody pack
up, we're going back. - Yay, yay, yay. - Okay, 3F, let's go! (women cheering) - I'm so happy. - So happy. - [Man] Be quiet, that
means no talking ladies. (people laughing) - We are gettng our stuff in... - [Inmate] Whoa. - By the time they even
came in to move us, I was all ready depressed,
I'm like man, it's over. (men talking) - When you been here long
enough, and you come to the gym, and it's like you're ready
to go back to the house, you know what I mean? - Now we get a
phone and a shower, we should be real
excited about that. - This flooding incident,
not their problem, their response to it,
totally their problem. The inmates were
allowed to roam around and do whatever they're doing. And just happened that
taking over the facility wasn't on their agenda. - We're getting ready
to bus 300 inmates back down to their
sections after being housed in the rec room and
various parts of our jail. We're moving so many inmates,
we can't take any risk here. We're gonna search every inmate, and make sure no contraband
makes it back to the sections. (intense rhythmic music) - Hystone! Carroll. - [Man] Yeah. - Curtis! - There was a lot that
we could've done better in this incident, we
need to learn from this, and do a lot better
in the future. - When they said we were
going back to our pod, I can finally just breathe. It kind of feels like
home, in a weird way, a weird (beep) jail home. - I will never complain again, after being along with
that ratchet (beep), I will never complain again. - We're home! - After being taken back and
seen how disgusting that place is, where I'm at is like heaven. And right now it's nice,
but it's probably the calm before the storm, and I'm
definitely on the lookout. (dramatic drumming) - Before the sewer thing,
I had a theory about how people are getting
the drugs into the pod. I haven't laid my eyes to
actually see the product, but I know it's upstairs. Felt good to wash your (beep)... Right now, because
everybody's getting along, and everything is so low key, this is where I need
to go back to work. (women laughing) This is the perfect
opportunity for me to really start figuring and finding
out as much as I can, because evidence
that's what I need. (woman grunting) - No, I'm not. - Stephanie's been making
quite the theatrical show, making a lot of phone calls. My instinct says
what is she hiding, why are the theatrics getting
so big, what's going on. She's talking about
finger monkeys and randomly weird things. There's something that's
code for something else, and I'm trying to figure
all that out still. I know the vibe of
something's coming, so I've been up in
everybody's face, and I'm exhausted doing it,
but I'm pilfering in and out of every room, la, la, la - I love you. (women laughing) - [Sheri] I don't know
what they're doing, but something's coming, that's
what I need to find out, what is it. (women laughing) (intense fast music) - I don't really eat here. I hate sausage, the pizza's
dry, the fish sucks to me. In D pod, I'm not eating this anyways. And so I was giving
everything else to Garza. In C pod, giving things away,
that's an inherent weakness by many peoples opinion. So I was like huh,
unique opportunity. So I started just
selling every tray. I have an unprecedented
type of store. I have the only tray store. Yeah, like that, with the
topping on that, (beep). Eat a sandwich or something. (man laughing) Yeah. The more you actually
act like you're a player, the more you're respected. And then I also have
currency as a result. - Ryan's put himself in a very
dangerous place right now. If somebody owes him a debt, and he doesn't
collect on that debt, all the other inmates
in that section are gonna look at him as weak, and
he's gonna become a target. (dramatic drumming music) (phone ringing) - Hey. Ew. Well I've never been in
this situation before, I'm doing everything I know
how to do to get through it and deal with it. And he's like oh, you know,
it's no big deal, you're fine. I'm going through one
of the hardest struggles I've ever been through
in my life right now. And I'm reaching out to him, and he's kind of making
almost a joke of it. He's been to war,
he's been shot at. To him this is like a cake walk, but this is life
and death for me, just as the same as Afghanistan
was life or death for you, just a different kind. I break one night in here,
and I pick up a drug, or something like
that, that's it, there's no going back
for me, that's my bullet. This has not been an
easy process, I think, for either one of us, it's
actual stress on our marriage. It's tearing me apart, inside
and out, every single day. (dramatic drumming music) (woman laughing loudly) - So there's been some real
serious drama in the pod. Especially with Elena. - Yeah, oh, whatever, whatever! (women screaming) - Elena, that's the
one person in the pod that although, she doesn't
look like my daughter, her mentality is very
strongly, closely related to my daughter, so
I thought, you know, maybe give me the chance to
maybe mentor her a little bit, so she doesn't keep getting
amped up by everybody around here, and just
stay in so much trouble. And then Elena just
starts to invite me in, and somehow my daughter came up. (intense fast music) She would just come
home real loopy, and she would go straight
to sleep for three days. That's when I knew
something was wrong. I felt like I was enabling
her, so I went through a lot of changes in my
mind at first, you know. My family kept telling me
you're giving her too much to be in school, you're
paying for too much, and you're not making
her work hard enough, and you're giving
her open doors. And I was like I just want
her to have the things that I never had and
what's wrong with that? - You, for one, can't hold
that pain in your heart like it was something
that you did. - What you're saying
right there has got me really perplexed. How would you feel if
you knew for a fact you were coming
out to your mother, who's gonna be able to take
care of you, financially, and would you feel differently,
would you be more scared, or would you feel resentful? Because I'm thinking
she's gonna be like trying to be rebellious because
she doesn't wanna be taken care of
because of her pride. I don't know what I'm
gonna be dealing with. - She's gonna fight you
to the nail at first, because she's not gonna
agree that you're behind her, even though that's what
you're trying to do. But you know what I mean,
you're just gonna have to just hold her hand,
that's all I can say. I can't tell you until
that instance happens. But she needs to know that
this is not how life should be. - How she gonna be emotionally? You know, I mean,
am I gonna be ready? Thank you. - You're welcome baby. - It was so overwhelming,
to hear all of what I'm about to face, what I'm
about to have to deal with. It just broke me
down to my knees, even though I wasn't
physically on my knees, I was on my knees,
like in my soul. - You're gonna be ready, I
know you're scared right now, but you're her momma, you
know, that's never changed. (fast intense music) - Well the sewage issue
for me, there is a maximum amount of stress
that I can take, then some point you max out,
I don't know where that is, but it just pushes higher. In this particular
situation, my daughter represented the outside world. - [Woman On Phone] Thank you,
please remain on the line. - [Daughter On Phone] Hello. - It was good to hear her voice,
but then it's back to work. (dramatic rhythmic music) - I had been bitten
by something, or something had happened
to the back of my leg. It kind of continued to get
worse, continued to get hot. Itched, burned, and
I'm like (beep), something's not right. So I immediately grabbed
Monalisa, and I grabbed Sherie, and I was like hey, there's
something on the back of my leg, do you think it's something
be concerned about? Girls take care of each
other, I feel like anything medical that pops up like that, you're just better off going
to someone that's been there, that knows the drill, that
can tell you nix this, this, and this, and see if that works. It's like you have your
own little medical team inside the pod. - Where's Ashleigh? - Right there. - I'll put her in bed. - While Sara Bell, Candice,
Leonard, like they've all been here for a long time, so they've seen a lot of things. They were like let me see,
let me see if it's anything I've seen before. As soon as I heard it,
that feeling is terrifying. (intense eerie music) I'm like (beep), this
could be really bad. ) (woman sobbing) Maybe I got bit by
a spider over there, there's a lot of
bugs going around. I'm feeling weak, I feel
like I have a fever, hot flashes, cold and clammy,
I don't know what's going on. Sorry. - You're okay. - You're probably sick
of being in my butt. - Honey, I got kids, really. - Don't wipe it too
hard, because I don't wanna bust open the white heads. - Yeah, I'm trying to
get that out of there. - Yeah, I know. I feel like (beep). How bad can it get, what
if I actually picked up something serious? (fast rhythmic music) - [Woman] Are you okay? - I don't know. (sobbing) I've gone through so
much in three weeks, and of course, yes I have
anxiety, yes, I'm stressed. That on top of now seeing
something physical pop up, is like times 100,
now I'm just like, my mind is, I feel like
I'm just going crazy. I don't wanna back out of
something that I committed to. I've done that so
many times in my life. And I've put myself into
this as one of these girls. They can't just say
hey, I don't feel good, I'm gonna go ahead and
go home to my family. I need to finish
this out for myself like... it's it's like, this is part of
the rest of my life. Like, you know, I will use this
to be who I'm supposed to be, I need to be here,
you know what I mean like, I can't pull out now, I've
sacrificed too much at home. (intense drumming music) - Where that money,
where that sack? - Mucho commisaria! - What's your last name again? - Ryan. - All right, thanks. I have an unprecedented
type of store. It's a way to get inside
and gain information for this program. People like, oh,
biscuits and gravy, dude I'll give you
two honey buns for it, which is a large item here,
because it's a dollar each. I'm like, I'm not gonna
screw you over like that, it's worth $1.50,
not $2.00, take this, they're like dude, thank you. It means a lot to these
people to like have somebody not trying to
scheme them at all times. I'm still technically abiding
by all of the training rules. I don't wanna actually
end up in jail, but those are the risks you
run if you do run a store. (intense rhythmic music) - So Mona comes in and
you can tell that she's kind of shook up, and
I'm kind of like, okay, what happened here, because
I haven't seen her like this, not in a while. (woman sobbing) How do you release somebody
from this situation to a family, that
family needs counseling on how to deal with this. I'm gonna need counseling
to deal with this. (fast dramatic music) - A (beep) guy got him in
the back of the neck. Did he tell you about it? - Yeah, he got me in the
(beep) chin. - Once I come right
back in D pod, I'm like, oh man, I'm back in
hell, trying to like, get everything together. The world is starting
to change a little bit, now we've got a bunch of
new people in and stuff. And the dynamics of
the pod is changing, and so it kind of makes
it a little bit hard for everybody to
find a bathroom now. You in a 40 person
cell with 60 people, so it's all ready overcrowded, and now like, somebody sleeps
in the dayroom bathroom now. I had an encounter with
them where they tried to tell me I couldn't use
the dayroom bathroom anymore. The group of people in there,
it's a bunch of dope fiends, but they try to act tough
because there's a bunch of them. He like this ain't
the dayroom bathroom, and I'm like dude,
we grown ass men. I'm sick of people being
tough and acting like they gonna whoop ass but
really, they soft. I do wanna fight at this point, because it's chaos all around. I was about to put on
my shoes, I'm like, man, I'm about to go smack
every last one of them. Like they got me (beep) up. Ain't no dope fiend
about to tell me I can't use the bathroom. I definitely don't have a
problem defending myself. (intense rhythmic music) I got (beep) reall bitch. You are not gonna stop me
from using the bathroom. So I ignored them and went
in there and took a (beep). And I didn't flush on purpose,
just to piss them off, because I'm like dude,
I will come in here and (beep) if I want to. I never thought I'd be dry
docking in peoples bathrooms and stuff. I felt good about it
though, I'm not gonna lie. It's chaos all around me,
and once you get treated like an animal so much, by
the CO's and everything, you start to believe
that you are one. The days are
starting to collide. I feel like I've
been in here forever. I'm starting to get to
that breaking point. I'm starting to act a
little crazy, a little bit. (laughing) I'm so sick of this place. (intense slow music) - [Man] Play nice. - There's a new
inmate that's come in, she's very pretty, very
soft spoken, very quiet, very reserved. - She comes in, doesn't talk
to anybody, that's a no no. It makes people feel
really uncomfortable, like something's going on. I didn't think
that was an option, that you just couldn't talk, because I was drilled
about every single thing, every detail when
I first got here. (rhythmic dramatic music) - Given my line of
work, when I see inmates that have that mannerism,
there's usually the ones that are the bad ones,
the really bad ones, and I picked up
that vibe instantly. - Sheri, Jessi, and I
were all in my room, talking about Damaris. - I ask Jessi,
you room with her, and you don't know
what she's in for. (intense deep rhythmic music) She pulls the papers
and read the case report while she was downstairs,
and it's gnarly. - Oh, seriously? - I'm like holy (beep),
how'd she get in this pod? (intense deep music) - I feel like I could
seriously, seriously hurt someone right now. - Justin is
extremely vulnerable. - There is a lot of
intimidation and apparent fear. (fast drumming music) - Yeah, I'm like at
my breaking point. I'm counting hours now. (woman screaming) - What the (beep). (dramatic drumming)
