welcome back guys how are you my name is amanda from plant arena and i am going to do a little bit of plant care today i am back in my plant studio slash garage being being pushed out by plants and i have some work to do i did organize a lot i did kind of get rid of a few plants i didn't make it but now i'm here i'm the state the plant savior is here for some of them the plant destroyer is here too for some of them but i just want to start like looking at some of the things that i have and things that i need to do and one thing i discovered is that i had i have i still have it i have this stromanthi trio star and it was in the bathroom upstairs my son's bathroom and he was in charge of watering saying it didn't really happen a lot so there was quite a bit of loss in that bathroom it's unfortunate i put a lot of effort into that but it wasn't fair to have him to be to take care of it sorry about the glasses i'll just leave them there because otherwise i lose them so this poor thing i did he took out a bunch of of the brown leaves and i thought you know let me try to rehab this see how it goes but then i had a kind of a better idea i thought i'd just replace it with a better one but let's just talk about this type of plant before i even get into doing any of the work it is kind of one of those plants it is one of those plants that is never perfect it's and i've said this before but it's like a monet it looks a lot better from a distance and then when you get up close you realize that it's a lot of nothingness it's just kind of like a lot of brown a lot of brown edges there's a lot of this going on the brown leaves this one is really root bound so but it still looks good right looks good from a distance so anyway don't expect them to be perfect don't expect any of your plans to be perfect because it's just thinking way that's this expecting too much from everything from nature so just try not to do that and don't be disappointed if you see brown because these guys always have a bit of brown edges anyway so i think what i'm gonna do i feel like i'm sitting so low in the seat i feel like it's like a little child in school or something but so i'm not sure how you guys feel about this i'm thinking about taking this out and just replacing it and i have a better idea i'm going to take this out put it in a smaller pot see if i can make it look better and then put this beautiful one in this pot so that's what i'm going to do the first thing is first you need any help out there are you all right out there okay let me know if you need any help he's doing working on the truck uh first thing i'm gonna do hope you can see this okay is i'm just gonna pull it out this is in a pot that has a drainage hole uh i had it in a saucer and it probably just really it just probably got too dry and then it got too wet and that plants don't like that so i'm just going to pull it out and see what's going on with the roots the roots are the first thing you kind of want to look at i'm trying not to make a mess oh i know what i did i think i planted three smaller plants in this in this pot and this planter because this is coming out as just one single plant look it's pretty in good shape why am i saying things in reverse it's in pretty good shape oh what's happened to me this one not so much this one's just like a little oh it's so pretty though it's still pretty i like just gently put it down and this one the third and final not so pretty you have oh that's a pretty one though i'm gonna see what i'm gonna do maybe i'll make a bunch of different ones so i'm just gonna set this aside and look at the damage and assess the damage here you wait your turn i know you're very excited but i'm running out of table space so you just stay right there so this one look at this it's not so bad this is just very pretty on its own so this might go into a little four inch grow pot and be like perfect again no one would ever know no one would suspect that this was that so i'm gonna do that i gotta find a girl pop i'll be right back i'll be back i wish i had my mics like my wireless mics not the alcohol mics what kind of wish i had all right so i have the grow pots they have four i washed them you should wash your grill pots if when you reuse them because you don't want any that stuff to get like if you had to throw a plant out because i had a disease or insect definitely want to wash it and sterilize before you use it again okay and you're just gonna keep transferring that disease around nobody wants that i'm gonna smell the soil that might be weird to you but if it smells funky i try to change the soil so i'm gonna smell it oh that smells good it does not smell funky doesn't smell like a swamp if it smells like a swamp throw it away look at that just boop done except i have one brown one here i've lost my scissors there we are one little one that's looking not so great maybe i'm gonna give this to steve i'm filming i'm going upstairs okay do not fall asleep okay bye have fun getting your work done it's kind of cool right so that's kind of cool that's going in the cool pile and look at this is this salvageable you know what i have another idea instead of just putting this one in there i'm going to put the two of these together so it looks a little fuller get rid of all the spent stuff you go there you go in the compost pile in a little bit when i feel like going back out there and look two two sometimes are better than one they'll be less lonely what is my husband doing out there let's shove them in this orange pot and pray and pray i just let the roots gonna get a little more established they're okay actually the roots are pretty fine boom boom boom let's see how this does now i'm a little nervous i should have just kept one and then this kind of so pretty it's so pretty what am i gonna do with all these plants i don't know what i'm gonna do with them all so okay i'm gonna do this one later so you get the idea you can separate them make smaller plants from one that was kind of failing it was failing it's green it's plant grade okay so that's that now kind of the easy part is just putting a new plant in this planter and it's going to make sure everything's okay in there it looks good take out the debris listen you can completely change the soil out but i don't really do that anymore because that's a lot of soil and this soil is fine and i could always add a little bit of uh slow release fertilizer to it if i wanted to but i don't really want to do that right now so let's look at what's going on here first let me remove the pot this might be a little difficult and again i'm gonna have to cut the pot because i don't think there's any way i'm gonna get this off i'm gonna try oh don't think it's gonna happen so i'm gonna have to cut it i don't like cutting them because i like reusing them so i'm gonna do it in a way that you can see and i can do it without hurting myself and just here you go i really can't see anything anymore my eyesight is really bad really really bad okay and i'm bad with scissors i'm bad for scissors there we go this is like really cheap plastic but recycle it when you break your plastic recycle it okay does not go in the trash we'll okay you want to see something super root bound this is root bound and you know in this case i'm going to cut the roots i tend to not do that because it can make the plant suffer a little bit and it takes a little bit longer for it to recover this is kind of is begging for it this one was saying like thank you first of all for getting me out of that pod because it was really confining and this plant started to feel like it was needed to go on a diet maybe i don't know i don't think you need a diet i think you're beautiful but your your pant your plant pants were too big or too small hi steve so there i cleaned it up a little bit this is so beautiful steve do you think this is a beautiful plant i do do you know what it is nope this romantic trio star that's what i was going to say very good so this is what i'm going to do now i'm going to swallow the spit that was just and then i'm going to slice it can you see this i'm going to slice a little bit what this is going to do this is so dull this knife sorry if i can bludgeon but bludgeoning it slice it so it'll encourage the roots to start growing out rather than around and around and just you make little cuts which is kind of mean i really need like a box cutter you get the idea of slicing it and placing it slicing it just enough so listen even if i didn't do it these roots are going to find their way into the soil i know they will i'm just showing that you can do this because sometimes this scares me a little bit when i see it's so dense this is so dense but guess what it's doing pretty well which tells me don't plant your plants in pots that are too too big because what happens is that it retains way too much moisture in the soil therefore allowing you to to over water your plants can you even see me like that remember that like 70s thing with the eye with the big nose that way anyway so i'm just gonna use this oil i have and push it to the side a little bit because there's plenty of soil in here and i don't want to plant it too up to the top because when you water it the water comes pouring out on the floor and then that's bad for wood floors or not so much for tile floors but what instant okay so here's the trick replace your plant if it looks really bad with a better looking one no one will know the difference like wow i remember that looked a little bit smaller now at the same time it's like the goldfish thing so that's it steve remember this plant that was upstairs in the bathroom it's just saying no it's the same plant it looks bad see i tricked you it's funny all right that's one sunday care thing done i'll be right back i don't know where to put this now definitely not going back in that bathroom it's my childhood do i even bother cleaning up in between nope nope nope okay a little bit i do i have to clean up a little bit it's gonna take me long just get the leaf blower to blow this thing out to the driveway all right so you are there you're there so now oh geez another type of thing i just did another method of making more plants from one plant here is here's a star this is going to really hurt my eyes out you know what i need to sit up a little bit i need like a bench whatever this is a starfish sansevieria right dracina really aggravates me this is a starfish snake plant and as you can tell there's a couple of different plants in here like this is completely dividable you know you can leave it like this because it looks kind of cool but i'm thinking it's gonna look a lot better in three separate planters that kind of match hold on a second i gotta close the door because the heater's on and i have the door open and everything's confused hold on okay back where was i so yeah i think this is going to look a lot better uh separate separated because the forms are so so cool and interesting and you kind of lose it you lose the feel of it by them being squashed together so let me just do this i don't know if you guys can see what i'm doing i really really hope you can i don't know the camera guy doesn't want to work today he took the day off this i might be able to save this pot i actually need this pot but you can tell you see how bulged out the plants are part plant part roots i think that's making a bulge i think i can get this off without damaging the pot or the plant no way i'm only gonna know if i try so here we go so this i'm just gonna turn it upside down yeah here we go here we go oh okay don't drop don't drop it or you can't curse even in german you know cursing on youtube interesting interesting it's not very root bound as you can tell it's not very root bound at all which is going to make it easier to separate so i'm going to separate it carefully because when you separate a snake plant you want to make sure you get enough roots you don't just snap it off and then yes you can propagate a snap to leaf but if we're trying to have achieve kind of an aesthetic thing here we just want three instant plants you don't want to break the roots up too much so ready you see this you see how it's kind of formed on the outside i'm going to work my fingers in there and wiggle it a little bit wiggle it hold it like this it doesn't topple over and it's completely snap off loosen some of the roots that are on the outside this is just what you see on the outside i don't know what's going on inside there so i'm going to just do that i'm going to break a couple of roots i'm going to have to i'm gonna have to do it no choice in the matter oh yeah and then it's definitely connected inside here so i'm gonna have to snap it ready where am i snapping you i can feel it like a big chunk of celery or my sizzies okay careful with scissors don't ever run with them nice and slow okay this one is number one i think come on come on leave the nest let's go you're gonna be fine on your own guarantee it i can't guarantee anything he stays back okay we got roots we've got some roots it's gonna be top heavy but that's one you stay there okay i like doing this but it stresses me out too and i got another one let's get rid of some of the dirt see what i'm dealing with here because it's really embarrassing making mistakes publicly getting used to that though you get quite used to that so i think we're going to have to do here is i want to find out where these guys meet see and i can oh see there's there's a root going right right there i want to i want to separate that nurse sutures oh boy that was holding it up and i lost and i lost one and now i need to get enough root system so this is going to survive you stay there just a new line a new thing okay shoot i don't know if i got a lot of roots on this i'm really trying hard i'm not rushing just to get this done because it's pretty pretty snake plant and it's gonna be three pretty snake plants oh gotta hold it up with my stomach muscle i don't even have any stomach muscles my stomach rolls there we go oh that's a good root system two number two you just lost another leaf whatever there's always going to be some casualties and then just number three is left you're a giant this is a whack this is wacky is a wacky one but i'm just gonna leave it like that now i need to find some pots for it so i'll be back sorry that video was interrupted by a political call get them a lot a lot they're asking for jeremy they're asking for my grandfather like there's no german here i wish there was jeremy's gone wait a minute that wasn't my grandfather's name i forget everything same as irving jeremy i don't even know jeremy number one i'm putting them in these short azalea pots six inch diameter i'm hoping that's going to hey chubs i'm hoping that's going to be enough i'm just going to shove those roots in in there as you know or you might not know but sansevieria roots they like to be a little bound hey chubby come on what's going on why are you so sad and i'm gonna reuse the soil because i saw nothing wrong with this oil and i have a lot of it here it's okay if there's some roots still in the soil it doesn't matter you got to use what you got especially when you can't get out to go get stuff easily use what you got and if you got dirt use the dirt if it's clean if it's sterile right this is fine nothing's crawling around in it it doesn't smell weird i might smell a little weird but the soil smells good and look at this so that's uh to me a success pretty easy right once you get past the fear of breaking the the roots especially those like tap roots the roots that are connecting these sansevieria snake plants together i'm never going to stop saying it and now this is seems to be sturdy if i use too small of a pot this is definitely toppling over but you are not and especially when i put it in a cover pot it's going to be fine so there's the one number one number two oh i'm gonna propagate this and see what happens okay number two same principles same procedure same you know oh that got buried in there i need this anymore so i'm just gonna kind of stick these roots in the bottom of the pot wrap them around a little bit like that and talk in a different voice pretend like it's not even me doing it i don't want to take responsibility it doesn't work so no this is gonna be fine it's gonna work and you're gonna be amazed at how beautiful it will look hoping i have to figure out where i'm gonna put them but i have pots i have plenty of pots so just sticking that in there don't wanna bury it too deep because you can uh you can have a little bit of crown rot we don't want that we want these guys to survive because they've made it this far how beautiful that is look at that number two and number three is what i'm a little worried about because i didn't get a lot of roots but that's all i can get but that's gonna be fine that's absolutely fine put a little soil on the bottom a little bit a little bit of soil and then what i do when i'm repotting i don't just shove it all the way in i hold it up a little bit so the roots aren't just sitting flat on the bottom and then i kind of layer in some soil taking out the extra roots because i don't know if it's good or bad it's going to create any kind of problems with like bacteria i doubt it so anyway i do that i don't want to stake this i don't want to stick it so i might have to bury this a little bit deeper than i normally would like to do but and also get all the air pockets out because the if you have air pockets in your soil the water might not actually hit the roots so you just lightly tap it down and that's that's that okay i think this looks pretty good is it leaning it's leaning a little bit it's leaning i'm gonna have to do this a little pack it a little tighter just to keep it up without having to use stakes boom okay number three i'm gonna be back i'm gonna clean this area up and put them nicely so you see what i'm talking about okay i'll be right back see what i'm talking about very pretty very very pretty on their own i mean i can't believe those these three were in that one pot it's kind of bizarre but now they can do the same thing they did in that pot just get big start expanding and then you can divide them again so that's my second project i have another one i have another one okay hold on okay i have more something else to do i think i might do i guess there was always something to do okay so i'm just gonna tell you guys something i haven't had an allocation of poly in a really long time because i feel like a failure i always they always died on me they had just issues they i think maybe spider mites i don't remember when i first got it but i saw this and i'm thinking it's time to try again let's just look at it i mean they're not the most unusual plants in the world but they're just like there's something so beautiful and elegant about this particular one it has it's flowered the flower but i'm just going to cut that flower off right there get rid of that flower and just looking at its beautiful form and here's the trick i think is let it dry out between watering and give it bright indirect light that's kind of the trick pretty much if you go to the nursery or a greenhouse all the plants are kind of in the same environment getting the same amount of water kind of and they're doing great when you bring them home it's a whole other story because we don't have that influx of light constant light all the time and the temperatures maybe change i don't know there's not a lot of airflow and i think airflow is another issue with this it needs put a fan in a room if you have a lot of plants because i'm telling you it really does help and it keeps the bugs at bay it keeps their foliage moving a little bit which i think makes them a little bit stronger anyway i know i'm talking about but i'm going to repop this i think i don't actually know i can see there's a root that's coming out of the drainatol and that doesn't necessarily mean it's time to re-pot somebody here no but it is a cue to take the pot off and look look under the hood so i'm just gonna get closer i think just i don't want to break that little root because it's very very sweet and i don't want to break it so i'm just going to kind of gently squeeze the pot a little bit i don't want to loosen where the plant meets the soil because then this is going to be floppy and i'm gonna have to stake it and i don't wanna do that i'm gonna happen to have a stake right now but i don't wanna use it so let's see if i can do this maybe i'll stand up and act like i'm doing something hard challenging it's not it's not just removing the pop not really root bound there's just some nice beautiful roots on the bottom and so i'm not even sure if i'm gonna you know what i am gonna i'm gonna upsize it just you know why because when you keep them in a smaller pot you're gonna have to water them more often and i'm not here that much anymore i think i will be i'm not really sure what i'm doing but i plan on being around a lot more to take care of the plants so i'm just gonna put it up one pot size one pot size this was i think a five this is a five inch yeah you should maybe go up two inches but i'm just going up one inch because it's really not rebound just gonna put it here i don't even think it needs any soil in the bottom and just backfill it repotting is so easy i mean just be prepared to be a little dirty but it takes seconds when you're when you're prepared that's that's it it's repotted it's repotted and i'm gonna put it in a container i gotta find a container but i'm giving polly a try i will give you an update we don't need this little guy down there it's goner i'll give you updates i hope i can keep you alive i think i have more plant knowledge now about you that's what i'm thinking so that was it that was that was really fast and easy and um you know i'll just talk about a couple things i did yesterday and i'll show you some footage if i slide over here i'll put the footage here i transplanted this philodendron pastas and pastasm and put the pastasm anyway it was growing like in one direction and it was gonna fall over and i said to steve i gotta get i gotta get a planter a heavy planter put this thing in a heavy planter so it doesn't fall because i love that plant i love that plant the interesting thing too is when i was transplanting it i've always noticed these little uh forget the name of it like why can't i remember anything but they there's these little droplets like sticky droplets on the stems and under the leaves and i keep thinking it's some kind of insect but i never see any insects but it's something called here's the name because my brain doesn't work anymore uh i've said it a thousand times anyway it's natural it's basically it's a secretion that the plant puts out to attract ants and the ants help kind of keep the plant pest free so like a symbiotic relationship so that's really cool you'll see it on some of the other ones like the gloriosums and the melanocrisms and varicose veins you'll see the little droplets so don't freak out like i did and think you have pests that you absolutely can't see it's nature's way of protecting it's itself okay anyway so i had a transplant that i put in this big terracotta planter and it's a little it's a little wobbly still i have to figure out how to get it off the floor because i need a bigger stake there's always issues that you can't address at that moment but that was a project i did and then i also had this beautiful kind of this topiary uh pothos like marble queen i think jade mixed together and my son didn't water it i'm sorry i don't want to blame him i don't i put a lot of pressure on them to keep stuff alive and they did some things didn't make it but this one actually was salvageable so i pulled out all the brown leaves and kind of rewound the growth the extra vine growth that was crawling on the floor i rewound it up around the pyramid and it looks better and the leaves are gonna start facing outwards and it's gonna get watered it's gonna get cared for so that was just like a savior type of project i had to do and then another one i did was i did this okay i love monster deliciosa but they get really big and if you have a lot it just takes up too much space so i i whacked back hold on i whacked back a big plant and i started properly i did this like three weeks ago too i didn't i did it twice i whacked it back started propagating it and then i'm gonna have lots of little little monsters that i can plant and give away to people when they come to visit or something i don't know like for halloween anyway that's another project i did i'm just trying to keep my plant collection like a little tighter i had way too many plans and i realized that once i wasn't here able to take care of them it wasn't fair for other people and quite frankly oh that's the horrible sound of scraping on metal quite frankly you just don't want to be inundated with chores and you don't want your hobby to become a chore so it's good to kind of thin the herd and just keep what you really really want and and it's okay if you lose plants and it's okay if you give plants away because you probably can replace them unless they're irreplaceable like some of them like my monstera my variegated elbow that i'm going to cut i'm going to cut it i'll probably make a video about cutting it because i definitely think it's time to propagate it anyway that's just some of the plant care stuff i've been doing today and yesterday and that's it so enjoy enjoy your plant care enjoy your relationship with your plants because it's pretty special i mean it's a pretty special thing i'm pretty lucky to have that like i'm and i'm lucky to have you guys thank you so much i'll talk to you soon bye that was a long one sorry bye
