ink ribbon it's one of the most iconic video game systems in gaming history shining bright before burning out and amassing a cult following in the process today I thought it'd be fun to look back on this beloved console and see what went into its Creation The Innovation it provided and of course what ultimately led to its premature death from its original name to an insanely expensive variant here are 50 facts about the Sega Dreamcast [Music] the Sega Dreamcast was released on November 27 1998 in Japan and almost one year later it was released in other countries with the us having the iconic release date of 9999 and October 14th in Europe Sega released a total of nine consoles with the Dreamcast being the final one but technically not since they released a 10th console in 2005 called the advanced Pico Bina which was an educational game system for kids on launch the Dreamcast retails for 199 dollars in Europe and Australia the logo for the Dreamcast was changed from Orange to Blue due to its resemblance of the logo for tivola a publishing company that had been using that logo since 1995. Dreamcast disk drives are notorious for being very loud and for failing over time where they will stop reading discs or in the case of mine they will only read some discs the modding Community has brought New Life to these systems with the implementation of a new drive that can easily be installed and allows you to play backups of your Dreamcast games from an SD card [Music] the Dreamcast was the first video game console to have a built-in modem and online support even having its own internet browser the cult classic game Fantasy Star online was made with the specific goal of creating an MMORPG for the console as Sega president isao Okawa believed that online gaming was the future he even went as far as personally paying for all dreamcasts to be bundled with free internet service there were a lot of games that were going to be released for the Dreamcast but were canceled as the console declined these included huge franchises like SSX Fable the Sims Max Payne and more after the release of the Mega Drive mini Sega did a poll in Japan to see what the next mini system should be and the results declared that the next mini system would either be an sg-1000 mini or the Dreamcast mini fingers crossed the composer of the startup theme is ryuichi Sakamoto who I was surprised to learn is a member of the band yellow magic Orchestra I was surprised because I have a few of their songs on my work music playlist you should check out their stuff their music all sounds like video game music and it's great check out the song Tong poo it's like music from a game that never existed or something one of the biggest downfalls to the system was its gd-rom format the discs not only held less than a DVD but were extremely easy to hack and piracy became a major issue for both Sega and its third-party Developers work began on developing the Dreamcast as far back as 1995 originally as an add-on for the Sega Saturn before ultimately becoming a new system and the project went by the code name black belt prior to the U.S launch of the Dreamcast Sega had a bad meeting with EA where the publisher said they refused to develop any games for the system due to Sega using new hardware that EA did not approve of EA was also mad that Sega rejected their demands of being the exclusive publisher for sports games for the Dreamcast which after recently acquiring sports games developer visual concepts for 10 million dollars Sega had no choice but to refuse to protect that investment the best-selling game for the Dreamcast was Sonic Adventure selling over 2.5 million units one of the coolest things about the Dreamcast was its memory card called a vmu or visual memory unit which plugged into the controller and doubled as both a screen that displayed extra information while also being a standalone mini console that had micro games for many games one company that had a great relationship with the Dreamcast was midway who had a contract to develop a minimum of 15 games for its U.S launch which included big titles like ready to rumble boxing NFL Blitz and Mortal Kombat gold another third-party developer that greatly supported the Dreamcast was Capcom who released about 30 games for the system including Resident Evil Code Veronica which was made specifically for Sega at the request of Shinji mikami the creator of Resident Evil the vmu proved to be very popular with Sega producing a lot of variants in total there were six in the U.S one in the UK and almost 40 in Japan for some reason the processor for the vmu is labeled potato I'd love to elaborate but Sega has never stated exactly why it was given that name but somehow it's so perfect the original name for the system was actually Katana but thankfully someone at Sego realized it didn't have quite the same ring to it as Dreamcast overall there are about 620 officially released Dreamcast games there are actually games still being released by Indie Developers for the system with almost 30 released for the Dreamcast so far the most expensive and ambitious game made for the Dreamcast was shenmue which was also one of the most expensive video games ever made to get into that would be an entire video on its own but it's one of the most noteworthy games to ever be made the Dreamcast actually had a ton of variants these came in a variety of colors like silver Pearl blue and black there were also several special licensed dreamcasts including Hello Kitty Sonic and not one but two Resident Evil themed ones with a red code Veronica console and a transparent dark blue stars variant the most unique Dreamcast is the drivers 2000 cx1 which has a Dreamcast built into a cool little TV shaped kind of like Sonic I went on eBay to see if anywhere for sale and found one for almost thirty thousand dollars before the GameCube had the Game Boy Advance Link cable the Dreamcast was able to connect to snk's Neo Geo pocket there was a Fishing controller that was specifically made for Sega bass fishing but some players discovered that the Fishing controller was actually compatible with Soul Calibur as well the Dreamcast controller is based on the Saturn 3D controller that was packaged with the Sega Saturn game nights into dreams the rarest Dreamcast game is a Capcom spin-off called Canon Spike it's a multi-directional shooter that features Capcom characters from various franchises including Cami Mega Man and more it has never been released on any other system and copies of the game go for hundreds of dollars today there are a few games considered some of the best games ever made that are still stuck on the Dreamcast including games like D2 c-man carrier and more when the Dreamcast launched in Japan it had a shockingly small launch Library releasing with only four games those games being Virtua Fighter 3tb pen pen Trill Salon July and Godzilla Generations the last official first party game released for the Dreamcast was the Japanese puzzle game puyo puyo fever released on February 24th 2004. the first online Dreamcast game was the puzzle game choo choo rocket its development allowed the team to learn about the networking capabilities of the Dreamcast and they used this new knowledge to help make Fantasy Star online in the UK there was one bizarre incident where on launch day at midnight a man was robbed and repeatedly stabbed by a 16 year old girl who then stole his Dreamcast he survived but understandably was shaken up the Dreamcast Hardware was based on sega's Arcade system called Naomi which used the background new arcade operation machine idea the Dreamcast actually has VGA capability allowing you to easily plug it into a computer monitor though it's worth noting that not all games actually support VGA one game that has gained a cult following is the game c-man which by using a microphone peripheral you are able to raise and eventually talk to a weird underwater creature who is voiced by Leonard Nimoy while it wasn't a big hit in the west it was actually a huge hit in Japan being the third best-selling Dreamcast game of all time the Dreamcast has become heavily associated with the Y2K and feudiger arrow Aesthetics for both the graphics it had and the system itself the name Dreamcast came from a public contest that got over 5000 entries and is a combination of the words dream and broadcast the two biggest reasons attributed to the failure of the Dreamcast were the anticipation and release of the PS2 and the lack of advertising and marketing in the US there was also the fact that online gaming on consoles was so new that it was very difficult to Market there was a camera peripheral called The Dream eye which allowed users to video and voice chat as well as send photos this was sold only in Japan anyone who has ever owned a Dreamcast can tell you that when loading from disk it is ridiculously loud and yes that is normal the Dreamcast has a reputation for being the center of a brief moment of remarkable creativity in games there were so many games with unique gameplay designs like Romania where you orchestrate a guy in an apartment to do things res which was intended to simulate the effects of synesthesia taking House of the Dead and converting it into typing of the Dead using a full keyboard and much much more the most recent game released on the system as of writing this video is a port of the PC game postal which came out for the Dreamcast in 2022 one of the reasons the loss of the Dreamcast was so significant to the gaming world was due to it also being the death of arcade game culture as most of the games were known for being daring and adventurous as well as the failure of the Dreamcast being responsible for Sega closing 246 of their arcades isawa Okawa the then president of Sega not only spent 40 million dollars of his own money to make the Dreamcast a reality but as it began to fail he donated almost 700 million dollars of his own money to keep Sega afloat he passed away shortly after sealing his legacy as one of gaming and sega's biggest supporters on March 31st 2001 the Sega Dreamcast was officially discontinued and Sega pulled out of the console market after dropping out of the console race Sega restructured and announced they would now be a platform agnostic third-party game developer and they are continuing to release games to this day and that's it for this video I hope you enjoyed learning about this amazing console I was so happy to make this video and just learn about all this stuff because the Dreamcast is still one of my favorite systems and it was fun to
