the Dreamcast may have been a commercial flop but we're gonna flip this flop upside down and install some mods I'll show you how you can swap the shell play games off an SD card and restore it to its former glory in 1440p [Music] retro is cool I agree today we're gonna fully disassemble this Dreamcast we're gonna swap the shell and even put a new CD drive in it it's not a CD drive it's a SD card reader we're gonna go pretty heavy on the tutorial mode today because there really isn't too much to do for the ultimate Dreamcast at least without doing the HDMI mods even then there's really not that much there's stuff out there but you know it's the Dreamcast so I'm going to show you how to take this apart swap the shell and install the GD emu there's a screw right here I'm gonna guess there's gonna be one in all four corners the screwdriver is like barely long enough I'm gonna assume there's gonna be some screws in here right there's one right there there's two right there and we'll take that apart later but there are one more screw over here maybe there's a hidden screw somewhere nope that is it okay four screws we're in set this off to the side I don't think there's anything we need to do with this I'm pretty much just gonna take out all the screws I see here because we're gonna have to take it apart but let's start over here with the controller ports looks like there are four holding this down I just pulled this ribbon cable out so we can pull all of this up maybe you gotta push out the controller ports from the holes in the plastic then you can pull up and it looks like our fan is attached to the controller port instead of just pulling that out I'm going to unscrew the fan because we need to get that out anyways and that's a smaller screwdriver why I don't know where that screw went oh there it is I'm just going to keep these four screws in their spots but make sure you separate all the screws so you don't get them mixed up when we have to put it back together next up we got two more here for this power button I think it's the power button it's either power or eject I'm gonna assume it's power and I'm gonna assume that we're gonna need to take out the rest of the power supply so there's one screw right here one screw over here which actually we can take this plug out for the power switch just unplug it for now and then we can get that screw easier but please be very careful when you're messing with a power supply try not to touch anything but the sides of it there's a plastic tab right here that's holding on to it carefully press back on that then I recommend pushing up from the power plug then you can push up on the board from the other side it's going to be a little stiff because that's where it plugs into the motherboard and there is the power supply carefully put that off to the side and then don't lose this piece then we can take the power button out we're going to take the three screws out for the disk drive there's one right here one over on this side that's wow really stuck there's one back over here that's also nice and stuck in there and that thing just comes right out that is it this whole thing is just one plug that's why the GD emu is so awesome it's a drive replacement that really anybody can do we have eight more screws down here that I'm just gonna blast through real quick and I just lifted the holes for the controller ports up I was gonna try and take the whole thing out at once but I was struggling to do that I just lifted the top metal shielding out with all the screws in their places so I don't lose them since there are different colors of screws I'm assuming they're slightly different in some way then oh yeah so much easier to pull the rest of the sport out this is the Dreamcast if you've never seen the inside of one that's what it looks like and then the last piece of metal shielding now we can get out the new shell and it comes all together comes with two long screws there are no instructions with this so I don't know what those are for I really really appreciate that the disk drive is already fully put together grab that metal shielding again and set her down grab that motherboard slide that into position there we go it's a little bit of a tight fit but make sure all the ports line up the network adapter isn't perfectly lined up but it'll probably be good enough once we got everything screwed down and I'm just gonna put those eight screws into their new homes honestly I don't know how much I'm gonna actually show every screw on the way back through all this unless it's something new for the gdmu GD emu but let's do that let's do the GD emu stuff right now first things first I got this off of an AliExpress listing it comes with the plastic stuff so it looks all nice together also it has the extender for the SD card and this whole thing will make the SD card easier to take in and out of this and the first thing we're gonna do is slap this in here so this is just gonna slide in here like that the metal side will be facing this part of it and it should look like that and this thing comes with a ton of screws that are not organized but these guys right here are going to be the screws that you need to secure the SD card reader Drew one down on each side and you're good to go this part's a little confusing so you're gonna take this extra plastic piece right here you're going to line it up like this on the gdemu and all three screw holes should line up with the holes in the plastic and this is M3 by five this is not the easiest to screw in once you get those screws in you're going to want to take your Dreamcast looking button put it in there and before you put these two halves together like I just did you're going to want to put the SD card reader in there then you're going to want to line this up like so and get those other four screws like the two we just used into these screw holes on the side and I'm just going to tuck this over here but I think that's it they just gave a lot of extra screws since this is a raised Edge yeah you're going to want to use the long screw over here now I'm just using the other screw from before that went in that spot and those are the only two screws we need to secure that down I think now we should move on to the power supply again and like I said before try not to touch anything on the power supply if there's any electricity still flowing through this thing it can hurt you and don't forget to put this plastic piece back down this is to protect your power supply from shorting on the metal that it rests on but before you stick it down fully like I just did get that power switch line up and actually I'll I'll screw those down real quick so we're just lining up those pins on the motherboard with the pin holes that they were in originally then you can just push down very kindly gently make sure the power cord hole is lined up in the plastic and you should be able to just push everything down and then we can get those power supply screws out again now we can go over here and put our controller ports back in coming at it from an angle just kind of fit into place there then we can screw it back down then we can plug that ribbon cable back in it's kind of hard for me to show off and do it at the same time then we can push our little Dusty fan back in there but remember these are the smaller screws so be careful with these ones then we can take this apart finally because we didn't do that earlier so just pull it out from the side and it should kind of pop out like that they should be able to just pull it out of the I guess it's ethernet line or telephone line because it looks more like a dial-up connection grab our new piece this one seems a little bit trickier I really don't know what I did I did the whole separation thing and I just kind of fidgeted until it went in I'll link the shell swap video that I just watched to try and figure it out but he said to just separate the layers but the bottom metal shielding in first then line up the ethernet and then it should all go in together I don't know but we're here let's finish this thing up I guess we could have put the top half on that whole time huh everything should did line up if you did it right but we can slap this in here and it didn't come with the sticker I guess I'm supposed to reuse mine I just I just gave it a big old gash there that's not fun and we're all done now he's got to do the software side of things I honestly didn't know how tedious the software setup was and I don't really want to bog down this video so I'm going to link to Blaine Locklear's tutorial because he already made a great one plus that's what I followed to do this one once you get all of your games backed up and on your SD card you can put your disks in storage and put your SD card into that slot we just installed no more worrying about bad lasers or scratch disks all of your games in one little rectangle let me know what your favorite Dreamcast game is down below and like with my ultimate PS2 instead of an HDMI mod I have the Retro Tink 5x Pro well very pricey it's a great upscaler that works on a ton of different consoles so I just need one of these instead of buying a bunch of individual HDMI mods with that being said I would definitely do a video on all the HDMI mods if they were sent my way and once again retro tank makes all of my games look phenomenal I've been waiting to play Sonic Adventure until I finish this mod and boy am I glad I did one thing I did have a problem with is the Dreamcast does not support support composite video instead you can buy the scart cable and it works beautifully one thing I unfortunately can't seem to upgrade is the controller I am not the biggest fan of the Dreamcast controller in fact I'd rather use this monstrosity so I look to the company that hasn't let me down yet I love their PS2 and N64 controllers but I honestly can't get behind their Dreamcast controller while the shape is more comfortable and they give you the option for analog triggers or clicky bumpers I really didn't like the feel of either pair of buttons plus with it still being wired this one just wasn't for me so while the Dreamcast brought Sega to its knees in 2001 there is still a lot to love about the Dreamcast in 2023 unlike stadia who is now nothing more than just a generic controller so like subscribe and I will see you guys in the next one later guys [Music] all of your games in one little rectangle is anyone gonna notice this is just Madden 09 for the DS I should probably get an SD card huh thank you
