hi there thanks for joining me today I'm Jackie now if you follow me on my youtube channel you know that I create sea glass mosaics and I really like to work big the bigger the better when it comes to sea glass mosaics but I will work small on requests so sometimes people will ask me to make a piece for them and I do so today I came down to the beach to take a few pictures of a few small mosaics that I've recently finished and I'm going to give you five tips on working small in creating your sea glass mosaics so I have four small mosaics that I'm going to show you today and all of them are 5 inches by 7 inches which is as small as I go I don't think I would make any smaller than that and you might think if you've never made sea glass mosaics before that this is a really good size to work in when you're starting I would not recommend it because working small is actually much fussier than working big when you're working big and you create a great big mosaic of all sorts of pieces of sea glass if you make any mistakes in your design or you don't have things lined up right it doesn't really get noticed because it gets lost in the big mosaic whereas when you're working small if you make any little mistakes or things aren't just right it really stands out so there's really a few things you need to keep in mind so that brings me to my five tips tip number one before you start your sea glass mosaic glue your piece of glass into the frame so run a bead of silicone all along the back of the glass so that it sits in the frame and then let it sit overnight before you start working so before I started doing my sea glass mosaic I took the backing off the picture frame and then I ran a bead of silicone with the glass still in all the way around the edge and then let it set overnight and that way when I flipped it back over the glass stayed where it was supposed to be and I could just go ahead and start doing my design tip number two do not skimp on design so even though your piece is small your design matters and if you make some mistakes in your design it's going to be far more noticeable than in a larger piece so if you look at this see glass mosaic even though it's very small I've been very conscious to make sure that the horizon line is straight that's a really important design element and I've also wanted to get a really good balance between the white and the green and the brown just so that it doesn't look out of balance in the whole piece and also by setting off the lighthouse on one side and the Inukshuk on the other and a little sailboat out in the out in the water it just gives those design elements that really do make a difference tip number three use small pieces of sea glass because when you're doing a mosaic the more pieces of sea glass you have the better mosaic effect you get and if you're working small there's not room for a lot of pieces of sea glass so the smaller the pieces you use the more pieces you can have in your piece so here's another lighthouse and sailboat piece and even though it's a small piece with not very many pieces of sea glass because I've used small pieces I've been able to fit quite a few into the frame and it really helps add to that mosaic effect tip number four clean off as much silicone as possible before you set your piece aside to dry what happens when you're working with small pieces it's a lot fussy of putting the silicone on so it's a lot easier to be messy and messy is going to show so really take the time to clean off as much of that excess silicone as possible so I don't know if you can see it but I can see it that I haven't been fussy enough and cleaning away the silicone around the pieces of grass here so I'm going to have to go back with my little glass scraper and my tweezers and try and clean off some of that extra silicone whereas if I had done it at the time when I was creating the mosaic it would be far less work but you really can notice that extra silicone so really take your time when you're doing a small piece to make sure that you don't get a lot of mess going and my tip number five display your finished piece hanging on a suction cup hook in a window now you might think that the suction cup isn't going to be strong enough to hold it but these are small pieces they don't weigh very much and the suction cup really does work and that way you can have the sun shining through your piece and it acts like a Sun catcher and it's really attractive so when I finish a small piece like this and I'm ready to hang it what I'll do is I'll flip it over and then I'll put two little hanging hooks on either end and just run some hanging wire across the top and then it's ready to hang in the window on a suction cup I'll take it home and I'll show you how I hang it in my window you can see this one isn't quite done yet because some of those pieces of sea glass are still showing the white silicone behind but that will dry clear and it'll all look very clear like these ones where where it has dried thanks so much for joining me today I hope you found these tips really helpful if you have any questions or comments be sure to post them in the comment section down below and I'll get back to you and in the meantime I hope you get to the beach and I hope you have some great luck seaglass hunting so until next time happy secret hunting [Applause] [Applause]
