#485 Blown Engine time for a CAT Platinum Rebuild The Life of an Owner Operator Truck Driver

all right real quick let's see what a flow motor looks like i think i uh i think i blew a head gasket not good go outside or maybe we'll go outside i think my door's frozen there it goes we'll go outside we'll go outside take a look see all the ice on everything i'm sure it'll bust my butt here oh look at the truck sell the ice that's all ice right there everything a tire's got ice on it everything look at the ice across the front there take a look what we got here um we loaded inside today so most of the ice is off the truck came off the truck we got uh metal um conduit like electrical conduit it's heavy too we got 46 000 pounds so um looking good uh today's video is sponsored by dorsey traylor all right real quick let's see what a blown motor looks like i think i uh i think i blew a head gasket not good all right so uh today is not a good day um i'm uh this happened earlier today and i've kind of calmed down a little bit but uh i'm camped out at the hotel here i think i blew a head gasket on the motor today um hopefully guys saw a little video there while it was running but you can see all of the coolant the the truck blew the coolant out of the radiator plus it sucked it up through the exhaust um i did check the oil and uh there's uh there's no oil so far on the dipstick or in the dipstick and it's not milky so i don't think the coolant went in the bottom of the motor [Music] but uh that's what happened today i don't know what i'm gonna do yet so you can see it all down there but it ended up pushing it out of the radiator this is the overflow hose for the radiator and pushed it out um it did not spit sputter bang make a bunch of noise i actually i just happened to look in the mirror and i saw the smoke coming out of the exhaust plus it started coming up from underneath the hood so so i don't know what i'm gonna do i don't know what i'm gonna do yet but uh just give you an update figure out it's saturday so i won't have any answers till monday and then even then it'll take him a day or two to figure out how bad it is and uh whether or not to rebuild the motor or not um i was hoping to get a little more out of it before it let go so uh i'm not too sure what caused it all to go wrong but on the bright side the dorsey trailer is doing really good [Music] so anyway all right i just wanted to give you an update so i'm gonna be dealing with this for the next couple of days all right um as you guys saw i blew the motor in the truck so um i'm getting a a full rebuild a platinum cat overhaul from caterpillar um i really didn't want to say anything because i knew kind of what was going on today i finally got um exactly what we're gonna do uh cost and stuff like that so i'm gonna get a platinum rebuild from caterpillar um i'm gonna pay a little bit extra and get a four year unlimited mileage warranty with it um with the platinum rebuild i'm also going to get on top of um i'm getting a new cam new lifters a new turbo new oil cooler and new main bearings the platinum kit covers everything else under that comes with a uh oil pump water pump um and rod bearings but it doesn't come with main bearings and yeah i just had those done but there was a little bit of coolant in the oil and just wanted to make a chain make make certain uh nothing else so the reason i was replacing all of that is the more i replace the better the warranty is for caterpillar so um and my turbo did go bad whatever so from what we can figure out and the mechanic took the head apart um i blew the head gasket between what is it four and four and six four and five it's about i blew about an inch and a half of head gasket out between the two cylinders and the metal ring that's on the head gasket went through the motor too so um that was why i'm going ahead just do everything i know the truck had a lot of miles on to begin with so uh i was upset but i kind of figured it was gonna happen but i was hoping i could get another couple years out of it why it failed i don't know uh it didn't give any warning it wasn't using coolant it wasn't uh acting funny it was pretty instantaneous when it happened um i was just cruising down the road i had about forty six thousand pounds on the trailer um it let go i saw steam and everything else coming from up under the hood i was about a half a mile from the exit i immediately pulled through the shoulder got out and i thought the truck was on fire actually i got out make sure the truck went on fire and then drove up to the top of the exit ramp um by the time i got to the top of the ramp i had to look around figure out where i was going to go now remember this weekend it was bitterly cold like minus cold and you know the truck wasn't going to run so luckily there was a motel nearby they had truck parking and um right at the top of the ramp and that's where i went and that's where i stayed saturday sunday monday tuesday wednesday i had the truck towed i finally got the truck towed on wednesday and today is friday so i've been down here wednesday night thursday night going on friday night um they did start taking it apart on thursday and today is what they figured out and figured out what we're gonna do so um so i'm gonna be here for the next week or so at this motel i'm at a really nice motel so i've got room service uh in the morning for breakfast and all kinds of stuff and i treated myself to a nice hotel since i knew it was going to be held up for a while and i got me a rental car um so that's where i'm at with the engine um i got some i took some pictures i took a little bit of video in there it would be nice to really you know film in there but i don't want to do that to the mechanic i just want to give him a chance to do his thing so the mechanic is really good it's going to be the same guy working on the motor the whole time it's there uh it's caterpillar shop so it's all cat work um and the guy was real good about explaining what was going on the head had a couple cracks in it the platinum overhaul does come with a new head but it does not come with the new cam or rockers and that's why i had got cameron rockers he said the cam was worn but it wasn't worn you know so it wasn't usable but he was like you already got it out go ahead and let's put another one in so i was like all right um the block the uh liner protrusion was all within cat specs so um they'll warranty the block and everything else uh real quick i'll talk about how the process i was loaded i had a load of conduit on my trailer that was supposed to go up by omaha uh and it was kind of a perfect storm with all the bad weather and everything else i was supposed to deliver that on monday so with the bad weather they weren't too worried about the load getting there so the way it works at mercer mercer will help find somebody what they call repower the load but that falls on the driver's responsibility he's the driver and the other driver that's going to repower your load to determine what the rate is going to be you know when you take a load at mercer every load is like a little mini contract and you the owner operator are agreeing to get that load from a to b so if something happens between a and b you are still responsible to get it to b um so mercer will work with you and they'll help you know put the word out so the way it works is i gave up some of the revenue on that load to get it covered so he made money i made money he's a good guy he brought my trailer down to me and everything so he took my trailer delivered the load brought the trailer down to me but to the shop anyway it was kind of a long ordeal but he did a good job he's a good guy so i think he'd been he was a 16 000 number he'd been a mercer for what six seven years i think ah i had my ten year anniversary at mercer this week this week was my 10 year anniversary at mercer so i will definitely remember my 10 years at mercer so that's where we're at there's not a lot going on um there's just uh sitting around waiting for them to do the motor so hopefully by friday they think they'll have it all together um if uh if everything goes right they got all the parts uh all the parts will be in monday you saw him pulling the um the liners out the piston and liners uh the platinum comes with a uh i think they call it a cylinder pack which everything is already compacted into the liner and they just put the liner back down into the motor and all the parts already in there makes assembly a little quicker um let's see what else is going on anyway that's it i'm just hanging out um it's cold this next week is supposed to be a little nicer this hotel has kind of i just went check they got a weight room exercise room i just got to do something i got a walk or something so i do have to walk but anyway that's it that's where we're at um other than that i'm just rambling so i'll keep you posted i'll try to let you know what's going on but pretty much not much is going to
