today i want to speak to you on the subject of four ways that god answers your prayers we're going to go into the bible today and reveal each of these to you four ways that god answers your prayers and i want to thank you as always for joining us today and allowing me to be a trusted voice in teaching the bible and as we often do teach on bible prophecy but i want to say a sincere and heartfelt thank you for allowing me that place in your life and i appreciate sincerely all of our faithful students and also want to welcome the thousands of new students it's just so encouraging to read all of the messages of those who are writing to the ministry and messaging and emailing and letting us know that you recently discovered this ministry and the greatest of joys is to read the testimonies of people who have been saved and have found jesus christ as lord and savior and so as we begin another study in the bible today if you've stumbled across this broadcast on social media or our youtube channel or our podcast channel or wherever you may be listening i never teach or preach without giving people an opportunity to make peace with god and i would ask you to patiently stay with us because i'd like to have the privilege of praying with you today at the end of this broadcast and today as we enter the classroom of the bible we're going to learn that god always hears and always answers your prayers many people on the subject of prayer feel like well you just keep praying and you persist in praying and occasionally god hears a prayer and occasionally god answers a prayer but surely god can't keep up with all of the people praying around the world well today you're going to learn that that is not at all what the bible teaches and more importantly i'm going to take you into the scriptures and i'm going to show you that god always answers your prayers but he answers each and every individual prayer in one of four different ways for those of you that are brand new christians this study is going to be of tremendous value to you and will provide both knowledge and understanding that will increase your ability to pray with power and maybe a newfound confidence but i suspect that many of you who are seasoned christians will probably be learning these four biblical concepts for the first time or at least it may clarify some things about prayer that you had not had clarity on before in matthew's gospel in the sixth chapter let's go down to verse 5 and i'm going to be reading today out of the new king james version matthew chapter 6 verse 5 and reading down through verse 13. and when you pray you shall not be like the hypocrites for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets that they might be seen by men assuredly i say to you they have their reward but you when you pray go into your room and when you have shut your door pray to your father who is in the secret place and your father who sees in secret will reward you openly and when you pray do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do for they think that they will be heard for their many words therefore do not be like them for your father knows the things you have need of before you ask him in this manner therefore pray our father in heaven hallowed be your name your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors and do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from the evil one for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever amen as we begin this classroom in the bible today let's take a moment to pray together father once again as we open up the holy bible we confess our need of you i pray for every listener within the sound of my voice let the word of god today be planted in their heart and bear much fruit i pray father that especially those who are coming to christ and are new christians and new believers and just beginning to learn the truths of the bible that you will help them to become people of prayer and that you will encourage them to know that god hears and answers every prayer of his sons and his daughters you are gracious and you are good and you are merciful and kind and long-suffering and we give you praise i pray above all that not one person whom you've led to this time in the bible will be lost in eternity's morning but i pray that all of them in these last days would live ready to meet the lord i pray that as they're listening to the scriptures today that you would prepare their hearts and if there are those who are backslidden and away from the lord may they come home today and for those who have never repented of sin and received jesus christ i pray that today would be their day of decision and so give them patience as we come to the end of this time together i pray that they would have the humility to do what they ought to do may they turn from sin and turn to christ and receive both your forgiveness and your promise of newness of life for all things we'll be careful to give you the praise and the honor and the glory i pray that you would anoint my mind and my body and let my words be pleasing and true to the sacred scriptures that we hold in our hands for all things we give you praise and we pray in the name of jesus and all god's people said amen perhaps the greatest privilege that is available to all who are the followers of christ is the privilege to pray jesus taught us in luke's gospel and the 18th chapter and i believe it's the very first verse where jesus said men ought always to pray and not to faint and those of you who are ladies that are listening the bible is written often times in masculine terms but when the bible says jesus in luke 18 1 men ought always to pray that word men is generic in the original text it means person or male or female people men and women ought always to pray and never to faint can i suggest to you that the reason why many people who endeavor to serve the lord but have ups and downs and failures and fainting spells as it were may not always to pray and not to faint is because people don't pray and they don't pray persistently and consistently or they just pray when they're in trouble or they just pray when they have need of something and that is not really what having a life of prayer is all about as you're going to learn by the way this is one of many teachings that will be available to you in our series on the subject of prayer and i'll challenge you as you have time be sure to subscribe to our youtube channel and listen to these teachings until the concepts that are being taught from the bible are understandable but more importantly than just understanding these biblical concepts i want you to learn how to practice them perhaps the first question that we ought to answer is what is prayer and many people are just befuddled that the god of heaven and earth the creator of all that is with the billions of people that are upon the planet that he personally hears our prayers well the bible says that he does and god cannot lie but question number one in our study today let's answer what is prayer throughout the years i've often times simplified my definition of prayer by saying prayer is talking to god from a sincere heart now the passage that we read today as a foundational text includes what is oftentimes called the lord's prayer and in that prayer we are taught that god is holy and that there are things that he desires us in that model prayer to address in our life but the most simplistic definition of prayer is prayer is talking to god from a sincere heart in matthew 6 jesus warned us not to be guilty of just repeating vain prayers prayer is more than repeating a prayer that you've memorized and repeating it over and over you know sometimes we teach our children a simple prayer and you know my father which art in heaven or now i lay me down to sleep or whatever basic simple prayer that sometimes we pass on to our children or grandchildren and there's nothing wrong with teaching our children or grandchildren or family and friends to pray by offering model prayers but if you've been serving the lord for 10 years or 20 years or 30 years or more and you're still just repeating a memorized prayer then you really haven't learned about the true power and privilege that is available to you through prayer go into the book of proverbs and the third chapter and as always in our times together and in these bible studies i ask you to bring your bible bring a way of taking notes and bring a highlighter because in every study that we do together as you've learned by now if you're a faithful student we start in the bible we stay in the bible we finish in the bible and i offer to you many classic wonderful passages in the bible not that some passages of the bible are better than others but there are simply said some passages in the bible that just seem so relevant to our personal lives and needs it is almost as if god wrote them for us yesterday and this is one of those passages that i'd like for you to highlight it's found in proverbs chapter 3 that's in the old testament and verses 5 and 6. there the bible says in proverbs chapter 3 verses 5 and 6 trust in the lord with all your heart do not depend on your own understanding seek his will in all you do and he will show you which path to take in the king james version verse 6 says in all your ways acknowledge him that's prayer in all of your ways acknowledge him tell him talk to him communicate with him in all of your ways and he will direct your path one of the miraculous keys to your steps being ordered by the lord in every day today life is to maintain the communication lines to your heavenly father through prayer jesus said that we should always pray prayer is not something you do on sunday at a church service or on an occasion you should be talking to your heavenly father about everything every day now i'm not saying that when you get up in the morning and have your shower that you need to walk into the closet and pray and wait on god as to which outfit you should wait and see lord you want me to wear blue or pink i'm not being extreme but the truth is you would do well any listen anything that matters to you matters to god and you should acknowledge him in all your ways may you always remember this truth and here it is god always hears your prayer and he always answers your prayer and i know what many of you are thinking well i've tried prayer and it just doesn't seem to work for me or i prayed and god didn't answer and so he may answer your prayers but it's not working out very well for me well that's why we're doing this study today i'm going to teach you through the pages of sacred scripture that not only does god always hear your prayer but he always answers your prayer but he answers in one of four different ways i remember talking to an individual one time and that individual who was a new christian said to me how is that even possible if man who was created by god has the capacity to process 2.4 billion cell phone calls just in america every day then why should you struggle to believe that the creator god who is greater than the creation man can process every single prayer i'm not saying that it might not be difficult for you to understand this but i want to assure you that god hears every prayer and he answers every prayer let me give you a wonderful passage of scripture go into the book of psalms and psalm 139 psalm 139 and i'm going to read verses 1 through 6. psalm 139 verses 1 through 6. and just as a point of teaching when you refer to the book of psalms you refer to it in the plural the book of psalms plural when you refer to a chapter it is not psalms plural 139 it is psalm 139 and again not trying to be the theology police but even many times i hear ministers who have gone to seminaries or bible colleges make that error so psalm 139 verse 1 through 6 o lord you have examined my heart and know everything about me you know when i sit down or stand up you know my thoughts even when i'm far away you see me when i travel and when i rest at home you know everything i do powerful you know everything i do verse 4 you know what i am going to say even before i say it lord you go before me and follow me you place your hand of blessing on my head such knowledge is too wonderful for me too great for me to understand and so the bible teaches us that the omniscience of god is beyond our understanding there are always going to be things that are beyond you that are not beyond god and so i want to begin by giving you that confidence that no matter who you are if you're a child of god god taught us in the bible by his son jesus that we should always pray we should always acknowledge god about the things in life that we're facing and upcoming and talk to him about all things of substance in all your ways acknowledge him and his promise is that he would not only hear your prayer and answer your prayer but he will direct your steps that should give you a confidence about your future your employer is not in charge of your future your government is not in charge of your future some employee above you in a position of leadership does not have the ability to derail your future threatenings of all that's going on in our ever-changing wicked world are not in charge of your future your heavenly father is in charge of your future and in all of your ways if you will pray and acknowledge him he will direct your path let me give you another classic verse that you need to highlight in your bible it's in the book of james in the new testament the book of james in the new testament and the 5th chapter and the 16th verse it says the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results isn't that wonderful let me read that again james chapter 5 verse 16 the latter part of that verse says that the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results all right let's get to the very heart of the matter four ways that god answers prayer that's our bible study today four ways that god answers your prayers if you're taking notes number one sometimes god answers no you may not like it but sometimes god answers no well is that to be found anywhere in the bible well of course let's go and i'll back every single one of these up with bible verses and i'm just going to give you one i could give you multiple examples for all of these four ways that god answers prayer but for the sake of time i'll give you at least one and then you can do your own reading and research but go into matthew and the 26th chapter matthew chapter 26 number one sometimes god's answer is no because sometimes your prayer or your prayer request is in violation of the will of god and i'm actually going to show you a passage where jesus god's only son prayed and god's answer was no let's look at it matthew chapter 26 go down to verse 36 and read through verse 39 with me then jesus went with them to the olive grove called gethsemane and he said sit here while i go over there to pray he took peter and zebedee's two sons james and john and he became anguished and distressed he told them my soul is crushed with grief to the point of death stay here and keep watch with me or pray with me verse 39 he went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground praying my father if it is possible let this cup of suffering be taken away from me yet i want your will to be done not mine and as we read on through the process of jesus prayer in the garden of gethsemane and the final outcome god's answer was no though jesus did not want to face the cross and the suffering the humanity of who jesus was at this time did not want that any more than you and i would want that but he submitted to the will of god and though he prayed if possible let this cup of suffering bypass me god's answer was no and jesus went through the suffering of the cross and the crucifixion he died and was buried again and rose again and 400 times in the bible we are promised that this same jesus christ will one day return and i believe it will be very soon and so you have to understand number one sometimes god's answer is no because you're praying in direct violation of god's will the bible says his ways are higher than our ways god knows what's best for you better than you know and so sometimes because of our humanity and because of our limited knowledge and because of our frailty and flesh we pray for certain things but those things are in violation of god's higher way and god's better will and so sometimes god's answer is no number two sometimes god's answer is go slow sometimes his answer number one is no number two sometimes god's answer is go slow what do i mean by that sometimes we pray but the timing of our prayer is out of alignment with god's timing and so sometimes we're praying and we're headed in the right direction but our timing is off and so god requires us to wait or to go slow your prayer request is not god's will at the current time so number one sometimes god's answer is no your prayer request is not god's will number two sometimes god's answer is go slow because your prayer request is not in god's time let's go into genesis and the 15th chapter as always we start in the bible stay in the bible and finish in the bible and i've promised to you that i would give you a biblical example of each one of these ways that god answers prayer and in the 15th chapter of genesis we find a powerful way of illustrating sometimes god's answer is go slow because the prayer that was being offered was not god's will at the time genesis chapter 15 verses 2 through 6 genesis chapter 15 verses 2 through 6. but abram replied o sovereign lord what good are all your blessings when i don't even have a son since you have given me no children eliezer of damascus a servant in my household will inherit all my wealth you have given me no descendants of my own so one of my servants will be my heir then the lord said to him no your servant will not be your heir for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir then the lord took abram outside and said to him look up into the sky and count the stars if you can that's how many descendants you will have and abram believed the lord and the lord counted him as righteous because of his faith now in genesis chapter 15 this character that we're reading about abram a-b-r-a-m is the same character that you may better know as abraham because later in life he had a name change because of a new covenant now at this time we're able to see that abram is frustrated he and his wife sarah are unable to have children and he is frustrated because he is thinking way down the road and thinking when i die all of my work all of my effort all of my money all of my resources are going to go to someone by law who is not even a member of my family things were different then than they are now in most modern courts and modern countries but abram was frustrated and so he was praying about having a child now in his mind he actually had come to a place where he had almost accepted i'm never going to have my desire i'm never going to have my answer to prayer and so this will be the outcome but he was thinking in his timeline but was not thinking in god's timeline but as we read the rest of the story god not only promised him a son but gave him a son now sadly abram missed the will of god not only on this occasion but on another occasion he took the poor advice of his wife and impregnated which was legal at that time one of his concubines and a son was born by the name of ishmael but ishmael was not the promised son god gave sarah his proper wife a miraculous son late in life whose name was isaac believe it or not will not take the time to enter into bible prophecy but ishmael who was not god's promised son and isaac who was god's promised son became isaac the father of the jewish nation and ishmael the father of the islamic nations and god said because you were outside of the will of god and you were premature in your understanding and you were unwise in your prayers and in your activities without waiting upon the will of god ishmael the islamic nations will forever be at war with your promised son isaac the father of the jewish nations and we see this even carried out in world events as i speak but this is a classic biblical example of god was going to give him a son but god's way of answering prayer has a supernatural timing that you must trust and so sometimes god's answer is go slow because of timing you know the bible tells us the prophet habakkuk in the old testament one of the minor prophets all of the books of prophecy in the old testament are divided into two categories the major prophets and the minor prophets they're called major prophets because their books are longer and minor prophets because their books are shorter not because their messages were greater or lesser but habakkuk was one of the minor prophets and i believe it's in the second chapter of the book of habakkuk and verse 3 that god speaking to the prophet habakkuk had given him a vision and said though the vision terry wait for it for it is yet for an appointed time though the vision tarry wait for it for it is yet for an appointed time listen somebody needs to hear this there are things in your heart that you desire and it's not that your desires are ungodly or sinful or wrong god placed that desire in your heart but sometimes god places a desire in your heart but he has to prepare you and train you and tutor you before he can allow that desire to come to fruition that's what he told habakkuk the vision that i've given you is by god but it is for an appointed time and you must wait for it so sometimes the answer is god said go slow four ways that god answers your prayers number one sometimes god says no your prayer is in violation of the will of god number two sometimes god answers prayer by saying go slow because your prayer request is for a timing that you may not understand but god does number three sometimes god answers your prayer by answering you need to grow sometimes no sometimes go slow sometimes you need to grow well what do i mean by that sometimes your prayers are not answered the way you would like to see them answered because your motives are wrong you're praying from a point of view of spiritual immaturity and you're praying from a carnal mindset and you're praying from the temporary desires of your heart without knowledge as to what the perfect will of god must be don't miss what i'm about to say write it down your prayers must be in accordance with god's holy word your prayer life will grow by your knowledge of the bible the more you know the bible the more you know god and the more you know god the more you know god's will and the more you know god's will the more powerfully and accurately you'll be able to pray let's back this one up by going into the book of james at the end of your new testament the book of james and the fourth chapter and verses one two and three james chapter four verses one two and three what is causing the quarrels and fights among you don't they come from the evil desires at war within you you want what you don't have so you scheme and kill to get it you are jealous of what others have but you can't get it so you fight and wage war to take it away from them yet you don't have what you want because you don't ask god for it and even when you ask you don't get it because your motives are wrong you want only what will give you pleasure wow i mean that was written in the first century but that hits home in the 21st century just as powerfully james said sometimes you don't get what you want and your prayers aren't answered because your motives are wrong you are praying out of carnality you are praying out of jealousy you are praying out of want you are praying out of envy you are praying out of a world view of comparing your life with other lives and other people first of all you have to consider that the bible says in psalm chapter 1 that the righteous are like a tree planted by the rivers of life well anybody that understands anything about trees know that a tree that's only been around for a year is not going to produce the fruit of a tree that's been around for 50 years or a hundred years and many times in christian circles people get saved and they see god doing something for one believer and they get jealous but they don't realize how long that believer has served the lord they don't realize how long that believer has walked after the things of the spirit and not after the things of the flesh they don't realize what that believer may have sown i was listening to a major ministry the other night and if i were to mention it probably most of you would recognize the name but the name doesn't matter but they were sharing how that their father who was the more popular name in this ministry that when he started out in the work of evangelism this man who's now in his 80s his father has long gone home to be with the lord powerful ministry international ministry but he was sharing from a son's perspective and he said a lot of people only remember my dad because of his fame and because of his celebrity and how he touched the world he said but what a lot of people don't know is that from the time i was a little boy until i was about 16 years old he said my father because of his travels we didn't have a whole lot he talked about how they ate cornbread and beans six days a week for many years and only on sunday would the mother save and work so that they could have a little meat and potatoes and sometimes some carrots on sunday and he talked about how difficult it was the thing that touched my heart because i've been in evans list my whole life and i understand what it's like to be on the road and away from your family most of your life but i remember him saying something that touched my heart he said i only saw my father for about a week around christmas and maybe throughout the rest of the year the days added together maybe another week he said in the course of a year i only saw my father in the early days up until my early teens for about two weeks out of the year and i never did that to my children now i i'm not judging other ministries but i do know what it's like to be away from my family and to pray about certain things and to seem you know in those early days that you know is god even hearing my prayer why are things going so slowly but don't miss what i'm about to say because this is a great danger when you begin to serve the lord don't compare yourself with other believers who have been saved for a decade or two or four or five or six if you'll serve the lord faithfully and pray and acknowledge the lord in all of your ways he will take you from where you're at today to where he wants you to be tomorrow but sometimes god has to build your life and mature your life and construct your life before he can entrust to you some of the riches of the kingdom and i'm not just talking about temporary things we have to remember that sometimes god said no sometimes god said go slow sometimes god said you need to grow and lastly and number four sometimes god answers go sometimes when you're praying your prayer request your spiritual motivation and your understanding of the timing of god are all in divine order and when you pray there are wonderful miraculous immediate answers to your prayers let's go into the book of acts in the new testament and chapter 12 and go down to verse 5 and i'll read through verse 9 acts chapter 12 verses 5 through 9 but while peter was in prison the church prayed very earnestly for him the night before peter was to be placed on trial he was asleep fastened with two chains between two soldiers others stood guard at the prison gate suddenly there was a bright light in the cell and an angel of the lord stood before peter the angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said quick get up and the chains fell off his wrists then the angel told him get dressed and put on your sandals and he did now put on your coat and follow me the angel order so peter left the cell following the angel but all the time he thought it was a vision he didn't realize it was actually happening here's an example in the bible where peter is in a desperate place he's in prison he's going on trial the very next day and the church in desperation comes together in corporate prayer and prays for a miraculous deliverance of the apostle peter and their motivation was right and the timing was right and their faith was harmonious and immediately god answered the prayer how did he answer the prayer he sent an angel into the very cell the bible said that peter was handcuffed to two guards one on the right one on the left this was often times a methodology carried out in biblical days and not only was he chained to two guards there were guards outside the prison cell but god has the ability to put people in a deep sleep god has the ability to send an angel and take people who are in a deep sleep and wake them up and those who were in deep sleep outside the gates and chained to him on the inside of the cell the angel struck him woke him up get up quickly we must go and god miraculously answered the prayers of the believers and immediately answered their prayer and delivered peter and even led him to the very location where they were having prayer that is a biblical example of god saying go green light yes your prayer is in harmony with the will of god your motivations are right your spiritual intent is right the timing is right and god answers prayer and so there today in the bible we have a study that will help you to better understand that he loves you he hears the prayers of all who call upon his name prayer is talking to god from a sincere heart we've been instructed to acknowledge him in all of our ways and if we do that in obedience he said i'll direct your path but though he hears and answers every prayer god has four ways that he'll answer your prayer and i hope you've written these down i hope that you'll spend time reading and studying your bible and allowing the holy spirit to make these more personal i pray that you'll not only understand these concepts i pray that you'll understand them deeply enough to share them with other believers and other new believers but the four ways that god answers prayer sometimes god says no because your prayer request is in violation of the will of god sometimes god answers prayer by saying go slow because your prayer request is for an appointed time sometimes god answers prayer by saying you must grow because you're praying out of carnality you're praying out of impure motives you're praying out of jealousy and personal want and you're not thinking according to the divine measures of the lord and sometimes god answers prayer go because your prayer is in the will of god your prayer is in the maturity of god your prayer is in the timing of god and sometimes you'll pray and there will be miraculous and immediate answers to prayer that is the four ways that god will answer your prayer in conclusion i want to speak to you very carefully about something of utmost importance so pay careful attention many years ago i was doing an area-wide lost lamb crusade and it was in a neutral auditorium that had been secured and there were several pastors and churches involved and a larger audience and after it was all said and done and i was one of the last to leave the building and there were a handful of us and the people that worked in the building were securing the building and beginning to shut things down and as we were exiting that building there right by the exit doors there was a man standing there and i could tell that he was waiting to speak to me and so i walked up to him and shook his hand and a conversation ensued and the conversation was basically this he said tiff when you gave that invitation tonight to receive jesus christ to make peace with god to repent of sin i wanted to come forward i felt so strongly in my heart i wanted to go forward i said well why didn't you he said well i'm going to be honest with you he said there have been times in my life that i've tried prayer but prayer just has never worked for me and i'm not saying that praying for those other folks may not have worked for them but my experience is it just seems like god never answers my prayers and without even thinking of it it just kind of came from my spirit and out of my mouth i said to him have you ever prayed the first prayer because prayer doesn't work until you pray the first prayer he kind of looked at me and he said i've never been taught that what is the first prayer i said the bible tells us in psalm 66 that if a man regards iniquity in his heart the lord cannot hear him prayer is the privilege of the sons and the daughters of god prayer is a privilege reserved for those who have received jesus christ as lord and savior but if you have never received christ there is only one prayer that god can hear and it's the first prayer or at least that's what i called it that night when responding to this sincere man if i regard psalm 66 if i regard iniquity in my heart god cannot hear me let me put that in straight english if you are living in willing sin if you are living in violation of god his word and his will if you are living your life by your own dreams your own aspirations your own will and you've never acknowledged your sin you've never made peace with god the only prayer you can pray is lord i'm a sinner will you forgive me and he will the bible said that he's rich in mercy and all who call upon his name shall be saved if i regard iniquity in my heart the lord will not hear me what does that mean if i'm harboring unacknowledged unrepented sin in my heart or in my life i don't have access to the privilege of prayer until i make peace with god and he becomes my heavenly father because today there's only two relationships you can have with god in eternity's morning when you stand before god he will either be your heavenly father or he will be your eternal judge and the way to ensure that god is your heavenly father is you have to pray that first prayer lord i acknowledge the sin in my life but i'm trusting in your grace and mercy would you like to have peace with god today would you like to know that five seconds after you die that you'd be ready to meet the lord and know that is well with your soul the bible calls it the gift of salvation in john's gospel in the third chapter jesus jesus said marvel not that i say unto you you must be born again do you have a clear distinct memory of a time in your life when you've repented of sin and received jesus christ as your lord and savior maybe you once did but you're away from the lord circumstances in life and i'm not judging you but circumstances in life have led you on a path and you've wandered a long way from god but today you need to come home whether you're receiving christ today for the very first time or whether you're coming back home to the lord after a period of wandering will you pray this prayer with me today as we close wherever you're at and as i've promised you before it's not my promise it's god's promise god's ears are open to the cries of all who call upon his name pray this with me out loud wherever you're at just say heavenly father today as i was listening to the bible you spoke to me you reached out to me and i have a desire in my heart to repent of sin and to make peace with god i ask you in your mercy and in your grace forgive me for today i repent in childlike faith i turn my back on sin and i turn my heart to jesus come into my heart be my lord and savior i receive salvation now as the gift of god and not by my own works but because of your grace and through faith today i'm saved fill me with the holy spirit and give me the power to be what i ought to be now according to your word which cannot lie all who call upon your name shall be saved today i'm saved and i vow i will live for you all the days of my life in jesus name amen
