well good morning welcome back to gp outdoors we're going to do something totally different today a few subscribers have noticed this is a brand new pickup truck and several of you are probably wondering why i have a brand new one when i just bought a brand new pickup truck a year and a half ago if you have a vehicle that has a key fob that looks like this keyless entry and a push button start probably like myself you thought there was no way anybody was going to steal this truck because you didn't have a key no ignition to pop no slim jim to pop the lock on the door that couldn't be further from the truth i'm going to tell you how my truck got stolen and i'm going to tell you what i did to stop it from ever happening again i hope you'll stick around cheers the risk of car theft has always been around since probably long before i was born but when i was growing up in my day the biggest concern of the risk was that a couple of kids maybe in the neighborhood you know had a coat hanger or slim jim would sneak up to your car pop the lock and either hot wire it or pop the ignition and take your car for a joyride or maybe just take your car so at 56 years old i decided i would spoil myself a little bit when it came time to buying a new truck instead of just getting you know the base option on the vehicle i went all the way out and decided to go for the top package the 4x4 off-road which included keyless entry and a button start and this little key fob and i quickly fell under what i soon found out to be a false sense of security because i thought with no key no ignition to pop and having to have a key fob with a push button start that the risk of auto theft would be absolutely minimal i found out the hard way it's actually the complete reverse having a car with a push button start and one of these radio frequency key fobs actually makes it more susceptible to theft these days so i'm going to take a quick minute i'm going to tell you what happened to me i'm going to tell you how they stole my truck and i'm going to show you what i did so it never happens to me again as a disclaimer i just want you to know this is not a sponsored video i'm not getting paid for any product sales or any type of promotion in fact the company that makes this product i'm going to show you today doesn't even know i'm doing this video the reason i'm bringing this video to you is that hopefully you and your family don't go through the same chaos that we had to go through when my truck was stolen let me begin about six and a half months ago woke up in the morning it was a day like any other day except it was garbage day went downstairs i put a pot of coffee on thought i'd drag the cans down to the curb while the coffee was brewing threw my boots on i went outside grabbed the first can at the top of my driveway and started my way down the driveway to the curb part way down the driveway i started to get the feeling like something was wrong by the time i got back up the driveway to grab the second can i began my track back down to the curb and my mind was reeling there was like an alarm telling me something was wrong but for some reason maybe it was too early i couldn't figure it out until it hit me like a ton of bricks stopped me dead in my tracks i looked down i looked up and i realized i was standing exactly where i parked my pickup truck the night before instant adrenaline rush i start looking around i've never in my life had a car stolen from me and i refused to believe that somebody was able to steal this truck especially given the fact that i had one of these fancy key fobs with a push button start i thought there was no way you could steal this truck i looked left i looked right i went out to see if it was parked on the street i thought maybe my wife moved the truck no truck i immediately ran in the house and checked and sure enough my key fob was on the counter where i left it the night before but my truck was gone i went back outside i'm looking around and all of a sudden they're in front of me are four tire tracks right across my neighbor's front lawn out onto the curb in the street bottom line i had to call the police they told me basically there was no chance of me ever seeing that truck again and told me what they thought happened to it called my insurance broker they said the exact same thing the police did got a call from the claims adjuster from the insurer told me the same thing told me what they believed happened and that i'd never see the truck again and in fact even my car dealer told me the exact same thing hit the internet started doing some research after a number of days this is what i found and this is what i think that we all need to be mindful of if you've got a car that's got radio frequency fob and a push button start it's no longer a couple of guys in the neighborhood with a slim jim and an ignition punch that you have to worry about you have to worry about organized crime in fact in this area from my research and from discussions with the police and the insurance company the number one cause of the auto theft claims they're seeing are being perpetrated by organized crime and it's a slick and thoughtful process detailed step-by-step very quick very efficient your car is gone and it's overseas as quick as possible let me tell you how they do it this little fob that you hang with your house keys is what triggers the car to allow you for keyless entry and push button start it's not the car sending out a radio frequency this little fob every second of every day as long as that battery is in there never stops sending out radio frequency signals so that when you get within a couple of feet of the car the car's receiver picks it up and that's how you get in the car so fast when you touch the handle and that's how the car starts it's not the other way around whether you're home whether this is on your night table whether you're traveling in europe and the keys with you it doesn't matter it never ever stops sending out that radio frequency signal looking for the car i wasn't aware of that how these thieves do it basically is they have a device that is able to look out and find radio frequency signals from these fobs five seven years ago the devices that they had would only be able to reach out 10 to 15 feet from the device and that's why if you look up you'll see sometimes there were news stories over the last few years and you'll see the thieves with wands standing at somebody's front door in the middle of the night because they're trying to pick up the fob signal not true anymore their devices are so far advanced now that they can literally pick up this signal from 300 feet away 300 feet here's the general scenario which i learned from speaking to all those various sources i mentioned earlier as well as some other research basically your thieves are driving through neighborhoods day after day they also park at big malls and they just drive down the streets through suburban areas urban areas and they're waiting until their device picks up a fob signal they can literally pick up that signal decode it in as quick as two minutes they copy it and record it to a blank fob they now know where your car is in the driveway and whether they come tonight two weeks from now or a month from now they've got a fob just like yours and very simply as happened to me in the middle of the night while you're sleeping somebody walks down the street they walk up your driveway they've got a fob they open the door they start the car they drive away and as quick as possible they drive that vehicle into a shipping container it's locked it's transported down to the nearest docks and as soon as possible they've got it on a ship heading across the ocean true story i kid you not the police confirmed it my insurance broker confirmed it the insurance company confirmed it and so did my dealer it's a very well known and it's a huge problem so you might be thinking gp you should have put in security cameras at your house i have security cameras and so do several of my neighbors but remember these folks are professionals all they do is steal cars they walk with their heads down they never ever look up they're always wearing a hoodie they have black glasses on and i also noticed they also have some kind of fluorescent striping on their hoodie and what that does of course with night vision and cameras is it causes a glare as it refracts or reflects back at the camera so let me tell you how i've solved the problem and i wish i'd known this before i bought my first truck i picked up what they call a faraday pouch there are probably 50 or 60 of these being sold on amazon if you took electricity in high school you'll remember who michael faraday is but basically this is what they call a faraday cage but the pouch is basically lined with a conductive material and what its job is is to block the radio frequency signals that this fob is setting out and it works it literally does work it's been just over six months which is why i waited to do this video because i wanted to test this pouch out still works to this day cost 11.95 canadian let me show you how it works okay the door is locked there's my key fob door is opened and i can lock the truck key in pouch door won't open key outside of pouch door opens key in hand car starts key and pouch it's literally that simple 11.95 canadian and i never knew if you're interested in picking up one of these pouches stick around for another couple of minutes and i'd love it if you stuck around for the kind of twist at the end of this story when you go on amazon you're going to find that there are literally 50 or 60 different types of faraday cages or faraday pouches they're often called are basically key fob protection pouches they come in different sizes different shapes some will say there's one lining some will have a double lining some will have a place to put credit cards some will not some will block the rf from the credit card some will not i spent several hours on amazon looking at all these different pouches and i just wanted to offer you the following to consider out of all of those pouches i researched some of them have fifteen hundred or two thousand reviews on them and they have a four point five out of five or a four to five rating but what you're going to find if you're not careful is you will find similar or exactly the same pouch on different ads throughout those 50 or 60 pouches and literally one of them will be five times the price of the exact same model in a different ad so you want to be careful when you go through it second thing i would recommend is read the reviews that's what i did you don't want to read the reviews where somebody says hey got it yesterday open it up put my key and it worked you want to sift through the reviews and find the ones where somebody says i've had this product for three months or six months and here's how it performed those are the adds of value and when you start to sift through all of the negative comments on each of these pouches and you find those types of comments you're going to find that this is one of the better ones on amazon i've had this pouch for just over six and a half months works like a charm i have one that i keep the spare key in at home and i keep this one in my pocket i like this one in particular because it fits in my front pocket my back pocket my jacket pocket it's nice and compact fits the key and it's a lot easier for me to carry around what's the brand the product i chose is called a wisdom pro it's called an rfid key fob protector it's item number w is in william p is in paul 4694 i'll put a link in my description down below to the amazon.ca website where i found it once again it's not an affiliate link i'm not getting paid to show you this and i have no commission or any other type of financial incentive except to hope that your family doesn't go through all of the things i went through hopefully this will help you a little bit and for 11.95 i pre i think it's pretty cheap insurance i'm glad you stuck around for the ending bit of a twist to the story police my broker insurance company dealer and many other sources told me the same story that i told you today stolen most likely by organized crime copied my key fob stole the car got into a shipping container and out onto a ship to head across the atlantic the day after i picked up my brand new truck i got a call from the police they found the old truck any guess where they found it in a shipping container on the docks in lake ontario about to be loaded onto a ship they wouldn't tell me anything more than that they just said it was part of an ongoing investigation but i've got a new truck i hope that's been helpful to you if you found the video of value please click subscribe hit the like button and if you want to know when i'm posting more videos just click that little bell have a wonderful and safe week with your families please be kind to one another and i'll see you again on the next one cheers
