24hrs in Lufthansa 747 FIRST CLASS (South Africa to USA)

welcome on board first class on the most iconic plane in the world the Boeing 747 we're about to spend 24 hours in Lufthansa first class and we're sitting in front of the pilots along the way we'll eat drink sleep and experience all the luxury Lufthansa has to offer and best of all you're coming along hello jet Setters we're headed home from South Africa we're flying with Lufthansa on their iconic 747 the whole way in first class after an unforgettable few days on Safari it's time to say goodbye to the early morning game drives magical Wildlife encounters and unbelievable scenery and hello to Next Level luxury here's the plan we'll leave Johannesburg at seven o'clock in the evening and fly for 10 hours we'll arrive in Frankfurt in the early morning in time to savor the first class terminal for five more hours before taking off again this time for nine hours on the way to Chicago our journey begins at or Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg time get checked in and we're all checked in that was a really smooth process we were offered an escort to the Virgin Lounge but decided to pass up on that so we could kind of explore the airport a little bit it's happening there she is the 747-8 that's going to take us all the way to Frankfurt tonight came in this morning about 8 30 but we're leaving at seven o'clock at night so the plane actually has to sit here for a pretty long time all day but that's okay with me because it means we get to look at it from here flying first class is special of course but to do it on board what's arguably the most spectacular plane in the sky that makes it even better 747 is the most iconic airplane in the world by far completely no debate and we are so lucky to be spending almost 24 hours on this trip just feels like a dream on our flight here on Delta's longest flight you made the comment kind of controversial that the a350 is the most beautiful airplane currently in service I think it's the most beautiful now the 747 is most iconic and then there are these a380s that that are well only a mother could love it all right let us know in the comments below are you team a350 or are you team 747 regardless of your team your best bet for flying on a 747 today is with Lufthansa as they're the largest operator of the type Lufthansa business class passengers are welcome to use the Aspire Lounge here but first class passengers are encouraged to go to the Virgin Atlantic Lounge so that's where we're headed right now seems a little strange to go to a Virgin Atlantic Lounge before a Lufthansa flight but I'll take it the Virgin Clubhouse here in Johannesburg has plenty of seating now I've been to just about every Lounge here in Johannesburg and this is my favorite by far there's no Buffet here instead you can order anything from these menus and it'll be delivered to your seat thankfully the caffeine here flowed and the lounge even offers incredible views the clubhouse has a full bar and in order not to ruin our appetites for the onboard offerings while also honoring the venerable Heritage of this channel we shared the meatballs as nice as this Lounge issue just stand by for the one in Frankfurt that one that's going to be next level and just about an hour before departure a member of the Lufthansa ground staff appeared to take us to the plane got an escort an escort to the plane and at some point in the three hours since we last seen it the airport team here at Johannesburg towed our 747 to the gate it was ready for us and maybe even more importantly we were ready for it let's board this bird so exciting lufthansa's first class cabin is located on the main deck at the front of the plane there are eight seats in here now for this leg I was booking to seat 3K and Suzanne will be right in front of me in 2K there's no bad seat in this cabin but the next leg will be even more exciting since we're up there in row one ahead of the pilots heat is extremely comfortable and offers storage under the ottoman along with all the other bells and whistles you'd expect it's infinitely adjustable but it is starting to show its age compared to other first class seats that's why Lufthansa have announced a new first class seat they plan to introduce it in 2024 on their new a350s that being said few first-class cabins provide us welcoming and atmospheres you'll get on this one and I think that's because of this table up front it makes the space just feel special the flight attendants are ready to begin service before we even take our seats one criticism of the seed is that they're not very private but there is a partition that does a nice job of keeping things secluded I accidentally raised the partition I should put it down how easy is that and it's got we all received slippers and pajamas that I will expect a very long time Landing tomorrow morning there should be no problems for all but it's flat is here but all but one of the eight seats in first class were occupied and I think every one of us was excited as we turned out on the active Runway to begin our 10-hour Journey North to Europe within five minutes of leaving the ground behind our Pilots turned off the fastened seat belt sign [Music] which was my signal to say hello to Suzanne and check out the bathroom it's another Lou with a view there are plenty of amenities in here too back at my seat I checked out the in-flight entertainment now I don't want to come across here as anything but grateful however the screen is undersized given how far away it is from the seat further the selections they're a bit lacking compared to other airlines but the map is a definite highlight for this system and there are also cameras mounted outside the plane Wi-Fi was available for no additional cost of first-class passengers we were given a voucher at the beginning of the flight it was nice to have the service but it was a bit slow the Bose headphones provided a first-class passengers were great [Music] I'm not sure there's anyone on Earth who loves Airline pajamas more than Suzanne [Music] minutes after we left the runway the table was set up again and service began with a hot towel and in a moose Moosh a beef a menu and wine list were available I chose to start with a glass of the Bordeaux but they'd run out of it after the flight down now that was a disappointment but I was offered this South African red blend which I really liked appetizers were served from a trolley which made it easy to see what each option looked like Suzanne started with the prawns with tomato onion and coriander some ball and as for me how could I possibly pass up caviar [Music] our incredible flight attendant insisted I try the herb roasted chicken breasts with Sriracha yogurt I was not disappointed the butternut soup had a bit more spice to it than I expected and for my main I went for the honey roasted duck breast with orange and Thyme sauce I loved the polenta Suzanne went for the Moroccan tagine she said the couscous was very nice but it was the chickpeas that were the Highlight for her she finished things off with the apple crumb tart before having her bed made up and donning her new Porsche designed eye shade from the amenity kit this cabin is more open than other first-class cabins but the partition does a nice job of maintaining privacy the bed itself is really comfortable thanks to its large size and passengers are provided with a comfortable mattress pad duvet and a pillow and thanks to that bed I slept for six hours however very warm so that was not the best but that is extremely comfortable so I changed clothes and tried out the facial Mist just in time for breakfast which started off with fresh fruit then it's Suzanne woke up in the bathroom so it's like it's like sleeping on a cloud but there were no clouds over Milan as we watched the sun start coming up soon she headed back to her seat where she enjoyed the muesli with yogurt I had the freshly prepared scrambled eggs which were literally made fresh in a hot plate in the galley I saw the flight attendants cracking the eggs this is proof a good breakfast can be had on an airplane [Music] good morning ladies and gentlemen this is your first officer Speaking In This Moment we've left our cruising altitude and start the approach towards Frankfurt airport expect Landing in around 30 to 35 minutes and we enjoyed a picture-perfect touchdown right on time it into the world's most connected airport don't miss our video going behind the scenes here it's one of the most amazing places we've ever visited [Music] all right we're off the plane what'd you think I really never thought 10 hours on a flight would feel so short it went by so fast I completely agree as I mentioned it's a little hot on Lufthansa planes they keep it pretty pretty warm other than that really spectacular flight now my seat at the back of the first class cabin actually gave a great view at the front of the plane to really get a sense of how far forward seats 1A and KR which is great because that's where we're sitting on the next leg but for now we're going to make our way over to the first class terminal tough time still lots to come to be one of the most expensive fancy lounges in the world it's been on my bucket list for such a long time I'm so excited to check it out how about you yeah especially because you're a star alliance fiend so we're gonna we're gonna enjoy this it's a pretty easy walk here from terminal one over to Lufthansa first class terminal it is a separate building so you're getting outside which we're not complaining about after about 10 hours in the air if you have a tighter connection there are first class lounges in the airport but with our long layover we couldn't pass up the chance to head in here there it is our first sighting of the Lufthansa first class terminal if you're booked into lufthansa's first class and want to come over here during a long layover head out of Terminal 1 on the arrivals level make a left and follow the sidewalk around you can't miss it this space maintains the airlines warmth and clean first class aesthetic what the place offers in terms of tons of comfortable seating though it lacks and Views but I imagine most people are coming here in part to feel like they're not actually at an airport the Lufthansa first class experience leaving Frankfurt offers a completely insulated world the lounge is a full restaurant with an extensive menu including monthly specials there's a bar complete with cocktail menu and 130 different types of whiskey but maybe you don't feel like messing with the hassle of a menu it's a buffet too there are nap rooms if you're tired in small offices if you need to work there's reading material if you're bored and a cigar lounge of course because well why not but I wasn't in the mood for any of that I wanted a shower a great shower may be the best part of a lounge experience so I'm gonna try this one out right now [Music] much better let's be very clear about one thing this is what we came for she's right lucky visitors to Lufthansa first class terminal like us receive rubber ducks as souvenirs we're so excited to add these to our collection I ordered an espresso and Suzanne had a little snack from the buffet are you really flying Lufthansa without a pretzel I thought we saw everything here in experience maybe we only drive out to the plane about 40 minutes before our scheduled departure we were taken downstairs and was brought into a Porsche that took us directly to our plane this is pretty Swanky this is pretty swanky thank you and you better believe we felt connected to the airport experience we also felt like rock stars when we pulled right up next the 747-8 that would take us the nine hours to Chicago whoa whoa and right there in the nose the plane goes four windows in front of the Pilots That's my seat 1A and Suzanne will be right across the aisle in 1K these seats have all the same bells and whistles as our last one so I'll be a little bit smaller but who cares about that when you have a view looking forward and just as you'd expect the flight attendants were ready for us on the last flight the remote was on my right and the seat adjustments were on the left now it's switched this is a real challenge first floor problem for sure but a challenge nonetheless it's my pleasure to welcome me important for Chicago excellent weather conditions are forecasted for their whole flights so I would like to thank you for choosing for your turn and be over here foreign sitting in these seats at the very front of the plane ahead of the pilots provides passengers an unmatched experience [Music] the best part though was the turn out onto the runway it was crazy I mean the plane's nose wheel is behind us so we felt like we were turning beyond the runway but takeoff in any seat is always the highlight of a journey [Music] less than 10 minutes after getting into the sky the seatbelt sign was turned off and I was checking out that Lou with a view they're two identical dedicated Laboratories reserved for the eight passengers in first class but we never had to wait back in my seat I noticed my phone was running on empty but that's no problem here thanks to two dedicated USB charging points and a universal plug Suzanne stopped by to model her pajamas a different set than the last flight by the way oh and these slippers they're thick and plush it's like walking on a cloud [Music] service began exactly 20 minutes after wheels up I started with the Reese link to accompany the amuse Bouche it was quail this time I log back onto the Wi-Fi which I'm sorry to report was just as slow as before but thankfully the Bose headphones were just as nice as before the lunch menu was just as impressive as dinner had been and as much as I wanted to have a second round of duck between last night's dinner and the Ducks we got in the lounge I chose the beef this time I paired it with the decadent Bordeaux which I'd missed out on last night this may be my new favorite wine now the turbulence helped oxygenate it it was pretty bumpy as we made our way over Scotland I've noticed that pilots on non-us airlines are less prone to turn on the seat belt sign the pilots the United States in the face of turbulence like this any idea why let me know in the comments below I may have passed on a second round of duck but how could I say no to more caviar unfortunately I've never got any toast but still managed to enjoy myself here Suzanne started with a tataki style salmon and the carrot roulade my filet with its herb crust was perfectly prepared and it was this asparagus that won me over here though [Music] Suzanne chose the pecorino ravioli for her Mane the fried basil and pine nuts added a nice element of texture to her dish after lunch I checked out the amenity kits they both had the same things in them on last night's flight we got the one that's perfect for liquid since it's clear I'll be using this from now on they're both by Porsche Design and if you like Porsches you might want to check out my brother's channel it's called her Enthusiast I'll link to it in the description it's where he shares his love for the brand I decided to stretch my legs with a walk around the cabin Lufthansa 747-8s have economy seating arranged in a 3-4-3 configuration but if you head all the way to the back you can find it in 242 that's probably best if you're a couple premium economy is in a 2-4-2 configuration with additional legroom and nicer seats downstairs in business you'll find there two two seating but if you head upstairs you'll discover a really special World unto itself with 2-2 seating plus here upstairs in a 747 front of course see this incredible first class cabin that you've grown accustomed to incredibly each of these seats has not won not two not three but four Windows to itself in addition to this useful ottoman at each seat every passenger In First Class also has access to a dedicated Locker perfect for carry-on suitcases and even to hang clothes at this point Suzanne was ready for bed the flight attendants pulled out betting from the front of this cabin I just enjoyed watching some movies and eventually the flight attendants closed all the windows up here as everyone on board started waking up I lowered my partition time for second lunch Suzanne had the meze and a glass of champagne now this is not anything like what you'll see on Emirates of course but it was still tasty I tried the vegetarian burger and I really liked it the barbecue sauce and guacamole were really nice it also paired very well with the Mas La Plana Cabernet Suzanne finished off with some fresh fruit [Music] that's Sudbury Ontario right out there we went through there a via rails Canadian not to it it's home to the late grape extra back as this experience comes to a close it's time to talk about price and the Jeb score we asked for your feedback in a previous video about whether to include what we pay for our tickets and it seems like you'd like us to talk about that and since we always pay for our own travel using cash or miles we'll do it but first let's talk about the Jeb score we'll rate the lounge the seat the food the in-flight entertainment and the service first the lounges were both fantastic the Virgin Clubhouse in Johannesburg was comfortable and the nicest Lounge I've seen in the airport but it's the first class terminal that truly Wows it had everything you could imagine safe for airport views but it still earns 5 stars the seat is really great however it's not as completely closed in as other airlines even lufthansa's sister Airline Swiss has a better first class seat I'm absolutely looking forward to trying the new one when it's launched on the a350s but it's four stars here the food was filling delicious and for one of a better descriptor classy five stars here unfortunately the onboard Ife is not as good as I'd like it to be the screen's just a bit too small for the space the Wi-Fi was slow and the selections just aren't as robust as you'll find on other airlines unfortunately that's three stars the service was truly wonderful both Crews were attentive and proactive they made both flights feel as special as first-class flights should they were excellent and earn every one of the five stars I'll give them before we total that up I want to share what we paid for these flights it's important to note that prices are subject to change and they're based on the exchange rate at the time we booked them it's also worth noting that we tend to book one-way tickets so we can make more videos for this Channel and that's often a more expensive proposition than booking round trip anyway just flying from Frankfurt to Chicago cost more than eight thousand seven hundred dollars but by booking our tickets all the way from Johannesburg to Chicago the price was less than half of that at four thousand two hundred dollars that even includes the flight home to Greensboro North Carolina then sure that's absolutely a lot of money but remember just how special this experience was 24 hours in one of the world's best first class cabins on and this is the key the queen of the sky All In lufthansa's First Class earns 22 out of 25 possible Stars between now and the next time see you in the sky spending 24 hours on this trip on a 747 is such a dream pinch me oh wait I guess it's real it's happening as you can imagine uh we're not the typical customer um my seat the pilots
