Ryanair the airline people love to loathe maybe more than any other but what's it really like we're about to find out hello jet Setters I'm Jeb Brooks from greenergass.com about to fly on Ryanair for the very first time join me to find out what it's like to fly this infamously basic carrier on a four-hour flight today's Journey Begins in roads we'll fly the 1700 miles to ryanair's spiritual home at London's stanstad Airport as Ryanair first timers we spent a lot of time reviewing booking options and fees and we still made mistakes here's what we learned along the way go first if you book in advance and travel only with a personal item under your seat you can fly from roads to London for as little as 55 and our trip ended up costing 190 per ticket I'll tell you why first the base price on the day we were traveling was 97 per person we also chose to add the plus fare bundle for 54 more dollars each because it included a checked bag a reserved seat and the ability to check in at the airport we then tacked on another 9.50 each to reserve exit rows and that was money well spent on this four-hour trip you'll see we decided to pass on the up charge for Fast Track figuring Rhodes airport probably didn't offer it that was a smart move pardon the interruption but we've just gotten the alert that it's time to check in for our Ryanair flight and we realized that my backpack is just too big to fit in what their requirements are so let's use the greenergrest.com tape measure to realize it's uh it's 60 centimeters that's 20 centimeters too long looks like it's time for an upgrade and that's just what we had to do to the tune of 26 dollars in order to take our oversized backpacks on board with us and that brings our total to 190 dollars per person still a pretty good deal to cross an entire continent but despite all of our preparation we were a little nervous about what might happen at check-in I don't think I've ever felt so nervous I just expect all these like surprise fees to pop out so let's see what happens but of course everything went smoothly we dropped off our checked bags we've got our boarding passes and headed through security that check-in process took about 35 minutes and low-cost airlines are really looking for Savings in terms of time and also labor which is why they encourage passengers to check in online and get their boarding passes there we of course wanted to maximize the experience and see what it's really like to fly full boat Ryanair the moment of truth yeah this was never a small cabin bag I'm glad I paid extra to make sure that this could get on because uh it's got some important stuff I don't know that we could film this video without this bag this is for you on most U.S carriers these backpacks would easily count as underseat personal items but here on Ryanair they're larger than cabin bags so we needed to pay extra to carry them with us got to pay up pays to pay for these fees in advance if you had to go to the airport it's a lot more expensive Ryanair is famous for all of its rules and regulations and extra fees there's actually one rule that a lot of people don't realize you're not allowed to board a flight from Greece to the UK unless you have a slight sunburn fortunately I'm good to go not exactly sure what Ryanair offers in terms of food on board we chose to grab a bite and some coffee on the ground in advance so this four hour flight better safe than sorry we're counting on the Buy on board program but just in case we thought we'd have a slice of pizza here on the ground before we board it'll come as no surprise that Ryanair does not operate any lounges but this is a really nice restaurant a good place to kind of relax before our flight I think I'll have um I think I'll have some espresso kind of get energized for Ryanair boarding time had arrived but our airplane was nowhere to be seen now my experience that usually means there's no need to rush to the gate but they do things differently here at Ryanair our airplane was still at ten thousand feet at least 10 minutes away all of the passengers on board had to get off and the cabin had to be cleaned but warning began anyway to talk about a vision no airplane [Music] eventually through the palm trees there it appeared the Ryanair 737 that would carry us all the way to London 15 minutes after we started boarding the plane has just landed one of the most incredible Feats in the aviation industry I've ever seen is the speed with which the ground handling team here turned this airplane around a key part of the low-cost carrier business model is to keep airplanes flying the more time they spend on the ground the less Revenue they're generating an efficient ground handling operation is essential [Music] can't tell whether that's a an airport or a busy intersection in London I wasn't already sunburned this would do it [Music] and Incredibly thanks to the hard-working ground crew and of course the Ryanair team on board we were cleared to begin boarding a mere 15 minutes after this airplane parked on the stand unbelievable one of the many ways Ryanair saves money is the fact they don't need to rent or buy air stairs at the airports they serve instead much of their fleet has built-in air stairs like these on board the seats are virtually all the same which is to say tight they're 189 of them on board most of which have 30 inches of pitch like this however we booked exit row seats which offer four more inches of pitch now this is probably the greatest gem on board despite the fact that my windows seat was missing an armrest and no one on this row is allowed to store anything under the seat but I was able to distract myself with a seat back entertainment in the form of a fairly morbid cartoon strip none of the seats on board offer in-seat power or recline and about 30 minutes after this plane parked everyone on our flight was on board and the captain offered his welcome this afternoon I hope you had a great holiday the weather looks fantastic uh and the good news is we're on time almost for a trip back to Stanford vs 55 minutes through cruising at 36 000 feet [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] as much as I was enjoying the built-in Ife I was grateful to have my own the loyal viewers will be glad to know the team at the Gan in Australia were kind enough to offer to replace the one that met its demise on that trip as I mentioned we're Ryanair newbies but they charge to use the lavatories I decided to put the rumor to the test turns out it's free Wi-Fi access was also free in as much as there is none at this point between the safety card the lavatory and the non-existent Wi-Fi we've exhausted everything that's free on board it's time to spend some more money now the menu was massive if you can't find something appealing here it's not looking hard enough onboard service is offered in stages first flight attendants pass by with drinks and cooled sandwiches and Ryanair is a cashless Airline so don't forget your credit card next passengers are invited to order hot food and if it's available flight attendants will be happy to heat it up for you we were enamored of the idea of eating chicken tenders on board so after a pretty thorough back and forth which involved pretty much everyone on the cabin crew they decided they did have it and they'd be right back with it a few minutes later the chicken curry arrived we weren't in a position to complain it had a nice flavor to it that would be at home on any grocery store frozen food aisle where I assume it had been splendidly selected by experts [Music] we had a great view of Venice as we continued our Trek Westward it's interesting to note that British Airways also operates between roads and London in their case to Gatwick tickets there started around 130 dollars and include a carry-on and a check bag plus seat selection that said on the day we flew their flight was a late night departure while Ryan Ayers left it a much more reasonable time before I share my final thoughts about Ryanair which may in fact surprise you I'd like to look at the experience through the lens of the Jeb score now this unscientific tongue-in-cheek approach to raiding flights is always imperfect but particularly on a low-cost carrier like this one but naturally that's not going to stop me from giving it a go and hoping that you will also share your thoughts in the comments below first there's no Lounge nor would you expect one but this is the Jeb score and we're not going to make an exception for ryanair's business decisions zero Stars here the seat was perfectly nice and I was grateful we splurged for the exit row Ryanair makes it clear they offer a basic seat with no reclining which means everyone has pretty much the same space unless you buy one of those premium seats the seat is worth four stars in-flight entertainment was really weak there wasn't any you'd better pack your own on Ryanair it matters zero Stars the food was okay I mean you know what you're getting if you order food on a low-cost carrier but it sure is nice to have the option especially on a four hour flight and yeah we didn't get what we ordered but it still tasted good the food earns four stars finally the service well the crew were efficient and did their best to help everyone on board in a friendly way and our Purser talked so fast on his announcements that we had a hard time understanding it which made figuring out how the service worked a bit challenging for us Ryanair newbies but overall I know Ryanair Crews have one of the toughest jobs in the air five stars to them and that leaves Ryanair with one of the firmest Landings I've ever experienced and also 13 out of 25 possible stars but that's certainly not the whole story there's a lot of value for money here I'm going to tell you that was a really Pleasant flight I have nothing bad to say about Ryanair it promises an experience and that's exactly what we had will I fly again yeah probably if the conditions are right to have something remarkable to say about the experience absolutely not like I said it makes a promise and it delivers on it it's Ryanair and about an hour and 20 minutes after we left Stansted we're finally in central London at our hotel so I guess that's kind of a downside for Ryanair depending on where you're going in London but whatever we're happy to be here between now and the next time see you in the sky we just wrote a travel poem and I wanted to share it with you so uh here goes no cops no hospitals no toilet passed up washing your clothes is always a must by train or by plane or even by bus these are the rules for traveling with us
