Boeing 747 Business Class on the MOST ICONIC Airplane!

there's nothing so iconic as a boeing 747 it's instantly recognizable let's get on board head upstairs settle into business class and enjoy an international flight together hello jet setters there's only one thing in aviation more exciting than flying on a 747 and that's flying upstairs on the queen of the skies i'm jeb brooks from greenergrass.com and i hope you'll join us as we do just that from here in frankfurt over to new york's jfk today's trip takes us from copenhagen to frankfurt an hour long flight and then onward from frankfurt on the queen of the skies for nearly eight hours to new york's jfk all in we'll cover 4 279 miles in copenhagen we battled long lines characteristic of travel in summer 2022 from there though we picked up a short flight onboard a lufthansa a320 neo to frankfurt even this hour-long flight included a small snack in business class on a flight this short in the u.s you'd be lucky to get some water after landing in frankfurt we made our way to our departing terminal the secret to any successful transfer in frankfurt is twofold first give yourself plenty of time second always trust the sides no question who the main player is here at frankfurt there's plenty of appealing shopping here but we had a specific destination in mind what is your first memory of a 747 flight i think it was when i was in eighth grade we flew from washington dulles to paris on our friends if you've flown on a 747 let me know in the comments what's your first memory of flying on a 747 my first uh 747 flight was actually on board a klm 747 from amsterdam over to hong kong i'll never forget that flight it was so special you see we were on our way here to see some of lufthansa's fleet of 747s today's transatlantic trip will be on board a 747-8 like this one this is such a special airplane the 747 was the first jumbo jet and its size changed the world by making it possible for even more people to travel more broadly than ever before sadly though these dash 8s are among the final 747s boeing will ever produce with 19 of this variant lufthansa is the largest operator of the type it's easy to spot a 747 thanks to that characteristic hump upstairs and again we feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude and excitement about having the chance to sit up there and to share it all with you two or false the 747 is the most beautiful plane in the sky today true by a long shot in my opinion you know a lot of people think the uh the a380 is beautiful i don't think so actually nobody thinks that look the 747 is iconic it is one of it is one of the most beautiful machines not just airplanes one of those beautiful machines ever made and we are so fortunate to get to get on board today but uh for now lounge time we made our way through passport control upstairs to the z gates you know it's not an airport experience without a walk-through duty-free is it absolutely not we discovered a massive line to enter the lounge it only took 10 minutes to get through it though and once we did we were directed to the senator lounge which we accessed thanks to our star alliance gold statuses we never got to check out the business lounge next door but despite the line there were plenty of seats in here and in my experience there's not really too much difference between the two types of lounges anyway this is a solid lounge with a typically german aesthetic there are nice views of the ramp and a pretty robust buffet we found coffee stations staged throughout the space you'll even find shelves full of newspapers and they're phone booths so your important business calls don't disrupt the quiet environment suzanne visited the buffet with what turned out to be one too few hands i didn't think it was through you can't come to a lufthansa lounge and not have a pretzel am i right isn't it still breakfast time it's any meal time in a lounge there's no such thing as breakfast time lunchtime or dinner time it's anytime [Music] we left the lounge at 9 55 ahead of our scheduled 11 a.m departure plenty of time we thought but we did not count on this massive humanity at the final u.s passport check this requirement unique to flights to the united states requires passengers answer a few additional security questions before boarding despite the crowd we did make it but this line would force a delay it took us 20 minutes to get through it ourselves it's almost that time you ready to walk up those stairs i am so stoked so stoked can't wait to take you with us we had no idea just how many stairs we'd be walking up [Music] when we arrived at the gate boarding had just begun we were directed to keep heading downstairs and once we were below the jet bridge i realized this would be a much longer than anticipated boarding process but we would be richly rewarded for it we were going to a remote stand and would be boarding the queen of the skies by air stairs we made our way across the ramp at frankfurt and enjoyed plane spotting the entire way four engine planes like the 747 are becoming increasingly rare as airlines retire them in favor of planes with two engines they're easier to maintain and require less fuel but we're lucky that lufthansa currently maintains a fleet of 27 747s including eight seven four seven four hundreds we arrived at our aircraft and were soon making our way across the ramp toward the front of the plane we paid so much attention to the size and scale of 747s we sometimes forget there's beauty in the details too that said the size of this machine is impossible to miss i mean the 747-8 is massive and everyone was taking pictures [Music] we knew we'd be upstairs but not this many stairs as i mentioned earlier any flight is special a flight on a 747 is remarkable and the opportunity to climb up this set of stairs to the iconic top floor of one of these birds well it's an opportunity to be treasured up here you'll find a 2-2 configured business class cabin and this is what's so special about sitting up here there may be 332 seats downstairs but up here there are only 32. it feels like your own semi-private plane on your seat you'll find a pillow and a blanket along the sidewall of these seats upstairs you'll find extra storage which was fantastic for my backpack the seats are of course infinitely adjustable in front of you is a small cubby with a water bottle in the amenity kit lufthansa opted not to have air vents in the ceiling here which is too bad they keep the heat pretty high on their planes there's a power socket down here unfortunately it never worked on our flight you'll also find a tray table remote more storage and a usb charge point here unlike that universal plug the usb power source did work and pre-departure beverages were on offer to kick off our trip in style welcome report almost ready just loading the last piece of package as soon as it's done meanwhile i do hope you enjoy staying here because of those crowds at the u.s security checkpoint and the delayed remote boarding process we pushed back 24 minutes late even still there was a sense of excitement and anticipation that swept over everyone on this airplane as we finally began our taxi out to the runway there's simply nothing like flying on a 747 the seats on most planes are just on one level so having this view from up top is something pretty special [Music] and our climb out of frankfurt was just iconic it was everything you'd imagine a lufthansa 747 departure from one of their hubs to be [Music] i settled in and pulled out the tray table the lufthansa amenity kits are great because you'll be able to take the bag with you easily and use it in the future they also encourage you to take more lufthansa flights so you can collect them all they're filled with the basics you'll find more amenities like eye shades and combs in the lavatories if you need them the in-flight entertainment system is challenging even at its brightest setting and with the window shades drawn it was difficult to see the screen and when i used the touch screen feature it often caused the movies to just jump around that said please don't ever mistake criticism for a lack of gratitude at the end of the day we make these videos to help you decide whether you'd like to take a trip like this and for us and maybe you this trip is about the airplane not the ifv lunch began with drinks as we approach the english coastline and while i check out james bond why don't you check out the menus lufthansa's food program was pretty nice at the time we flew i began with the tuna tataki which was very fresh and simple suzanne had the veal which she enjoyed and being up here in this smaller cabin upstairs really felt like our own semi-private plane there were two flight attendants supporting the 32 passengers service was attentive during lunch as we continued over the united kingdom our main course came i chose the beef tenderloin and it was perfectly cooked suzanne had the prawns which she said was one of the best meals she's ever had in the sky we planned to share just one dessert but the friendly flight attendant insisted we try both that was really nice of him [Music] the tutu configured seating is fine when the passenger in the aisle is sitting down it's easy to get out then but when suzanne settled in for her nap i was pretty committed to my window seat for the duration the bed was okay it was reasonable we were both grateful this was a daytime flight that said suzanne had no trouble grabbing a nap as for me i rarely ever sleep on daytime flights so getting out while she slept required a careful move that tested my skills as i don't know a gymnast or ballet dancer downstairs business class seating is arranged in a two to two configuration so solo travelers can book a seat in that middle section if they don't want to deal with a seat mate about 90 minutes before landing we were offered a pre-arrival meal while i wanted the cold option a salmon fillet they'd run out so we both got the eggplant parmesan the flight attendant told us it tasted better than it looked and you know what he was right i never would have selected this in a million years but i'm really glad we ended up with [Music] with cape cod and view it's time for the much anticipated jeb score we'll rate the lounge the seat the food the in-flight entertainment and the service first the lounge well it was comfortable and spacious and is exactly what you'd expect from a business class lounge but there's not really anything unique about it well except for the pretzel i guess four stars here as i said about united's 2-2 configured 757 anytime you're in a live flat seat in the sky you're doing something incredibly special and rare that said the tutu configuration is far from industry-leading lufthansa has been teasing an upgraded version of this seat for years now here's hoping it comes out eventually because this seat it's worth two stars the food was great suzanne said hers was one of the most delicious meals she's ever had in the air she's still talking about it i like the pre-landing snack and it's way more substantial than a lot of airlines would give you on a transatlantic flight so this earns 5 stars the ifv was difficult to use frustrating and hard to see this is worth 2 stars service was great during meal times but the crew were largely absent between them i like to see flight attendants checking on passengers throughout a flight even if that just means a walk through the cabin every 30 minutes or so unfortunately this crew didn't do that but again when they were there they were fun and very friendly they earned four stars before we total that up it's 100 worth saying flying on a 747 is something in a category of its own if you're looking for a must-have aviation experience it's this for sure and neither the seat nor the food nor the ifv matter what really matters is the magic of being upstairs on the queen of the skies the lufthansa 747-8 from frankfurt to new york's jfk earns 17 out of a possible 25 stars between now and the next time see in the sky
