this is the new 2025 Hyundai ionic 5n and it's the high performance version of the regular ionic 5 which is Hyundai's fully electric crossover or SUV or hatchback or whatever you want to call it doesn't matter this thing is fast with over 640 horsepower and today I'm going to review it and show you all of its quirks and features [Applause] [Music] today's video is brought to you by cars and bids my online Enthusiast car auction site that recently sold this and this and this and this and this check it out at carsand bids.com all right time for the quirks and features of the new ionic 5n and oh boy is it quirky and feury but let's start with an overview so the ionic 5 this is Hyundai's all electric SUV crossover that's what they call it kind of seems like a hatchback but regardless fully electric and it came out for the 22 Model ge now there's a high performance version the ionic 5n and they call it the N because that's Hyundai's performance line there's the Elantra n and the Kona n and the veloc n and now there's this with up to 600 40 horsepower in a compac dis crossover that competes with the Toyota Rav 4 now I've already reviewed the regular ionic 5 actually twice when it was first revealed I did a full walk around and then when you could drive it I reviewed it then so in this video I'm just going to focus on the n and the changes from the N compared to the standard model which works because there are quite a few we start on the outside where you walk up to this and it's immediately clear this is no regular ionic 5 there's a lot of revisions let's start with the wheels bigger Wheels 21 in Wheels in fact I'm not entirely sure they fit with the ionic 5 sort of square pixelated design language as well as the regular Wheels on the standard model but they do look more performanc and exciting this also has pelli P0 tires which are aggressive high performance tires that add extra grip and behind the wheels you can see much larger brakes obviously for enhanced stopping power which makes sense because like I said this has up to 640 horsepower now you go around to the front and you can see the entire front end is different more aggressive more exciting there's a lower front lip spoiler with a little Thin Red Line going across the whole thing it just looks more muscular and strangely enough there's a a little red vertical line strip right in the center not exactly sure why but I guess that emphasizes performance in its own special way anyway next we move down to the side where the rocker panels have been changed they're lower they're more aggressive and they also have a Thin Red Line going the entire way down the car and into the back where you can see the rear wheel Arch has flared out a little bit and there's little aerodynamic holes in front of the rear wheels I guess for air to pass through and improve the aerodynamics of this car you also have the end badge emblazened into the red when it grows a little larger on this rear wheel arch in back so there's something special on the side but undoubtedly the biggest exterior change to the ionic 5n comes in back where there's a lot of stuff going on we'll start with the rear spoiler which is unusually large you can see it's quite big on top of the tailgate and it has holes in it that allow air to pass through for aerodynamic benefit I suppose you also have in the center of this rear spoiler a triangular third brake light that looks cool and performanc and some of the other Hyundai in performance models have had this feature as well down below you got a massive rear diffuser absolutely huge surely also intended to improve aerodynamics but also make the car car look more aggressive and more exciting and faster and it certainly succeeds in doing that two interesting details and back that are kind of unusual number one this checkered pattern red reflector it's on both sides and back almost looks like a checkered flag but it's a reflector it has function and it's a little funky and weird also you will notice once again a little red vertical strip in the center and back just like you had in front I guess that's the ionic 5 n's version of a racing stripe instead of going down the whole car it's 3 in in front and 3 Ines in back and next up we move up front to take a look under the hood since this is the performance model but since it's an electric car it has no engine however that has not stopped Hyundai from putting a plastic engine cover under here with the N logo on it as if it does have an engine that they're covering up but indeed it doesn't and in fact there's no front trunk under here as well as you can see you don't get any extra cargo space up front but you do get a lot of power the ionic 5n comes standard with all-wheel drive and 600 horsepower however if you go into a special drive mode which is called n Grin boost so end like the Performance Brand grin like you're happy and then boost you unlock 640 horsepower for a brief 10c spurt so this thing has 6 140 horsepower in a compact electric crossover now the drawback of all this is range the normal ionic 5 goes up to 320 M on a single charge this only goes 200 miles such as the price you pay for the performance and of of course pricing is a factor as well this starts around $67,500 which is big money compared to the standard ionic 5 which ranges from the mid $40,000 range to the mid $50,000 range although the standard ionic 5 has only 170 to 320 horsepower depending on the version you get this has 640 it's a lot more power but considerably more money as well and next up we climb inside where you immediately encounter probably my least favorite thing about the entire ionic 5n which is the seats not the way that they look which is cool these sport bucket seats with extra bolstering to keep you in place on the track not the way they feel which is actually very nice on your back your butt your hips your body they're great seats not the materials they're made out of leather and Alan ter seat centers perforated it all looks very nice and I even like the light it up end logo go in the seat back which is a cool touch that adds to the excitement factor of this car inexplicably these seats have holes in them for a racing harness if you want to install that so you can take your electric Hyundai crossover to the track but that's not the problem I have with the seats either my problem is they're manually operated you have to pull a lever throw your weight pull a latch on the side to move the back rest it's ridiculous at $60,000 to have manual seats to be clear it's not like these are crazy bucket seats in a race car they've made a manual to save weight this is electric Hyundai crossover get over yourselves and give us power seats it's what people obviously want at this price point absurd to have manual seat controls but anyway next up let's move on to the other end touches in this interior you open up the door and you're greeted by a checkered flag pattern on the door sill as you can see along with the N logo which is of course very cool compared to the standard ionic 5 you have a different steering wheel it's a thicker steering wheel Rim it says n in the center and there are extra buttons to do extra things on the left you have the drive mode button which is finished in Hyundai's performance blue it shifts between Eco regular and Sport Drive modes on the right the orange button marked NGB that is your nrin Boost button you press that and you get those 10 seconds of extra power but the real fun comes with the buttons on the bottom of the steering wheel on the left you have one marked n and on the right you have one marked n but they're different the one on the left the N is black the one on the right the N is white and it's the one on the right that you want to press to unlock possibly this car's most bizarre and unusual and quirky feature the simulated engine okay get this you press the end button and you can see tachometer now appears in the gauge cluster and if you listen closely there's a sound of an engine idling well if you press on the accelerator in this mode it actually revs and you can hear an engine revving sound inside the car whenever you tap take a listen [Music] and amazingly this sound isn't just inside the car it's on the outside of the car where it sounds like an engine revving even though this is electric car again take a [Music] listen now the crazy thing is this mode doesn't just simulate the sound of an engine but also the shifting of an engine when you go into this n mode you get the engine sound but you can use the paddles to shift simulated gears and like go up and down in the Rev range and you can see me driving a simulated gear shifting electric vehicle right now now I'm going to cover this more in the driving part A little later but I have to say I love this feature it is fantastic and works wonderfully and it takes some of the sanitized feel out of driving an electric car it really makes it feel like a performance car with a dual clutch transmission that it's shifting gears it may be stupid it may be a gimmick but I love it and I wouldn't be surprised if this is the way that electric performance cars go in the future this simulated gear shifting it really is an excellent way to drive the car and it really wakes up the performance the fun Factor even though you're in an EV better than basically any other electric car I've ever driven again more to talk about when I drive the car the only drawback of this whole feature situation is the sound they've chosen which apparently comes from the Hyundai Elantra n but it's just a little turbo four cylinder with a high-pitched exhaust it's an electric car the sound is fake it comes in through the speakers you could have given me anything a V8 a V12 why did you give me that I guess they wanted to keep it on brand but it's a little dis disappointing however the potential is clearly there now the other end button on the other side of the steering wheel that goes into the racest drive mode possible it keeps all the engine sound stuff but it also turns off your traction control and your stability control for some real high performance driving you're not going to want to do that unless you know what you're doing but anyway beyond all of that other upgrades in here for the N model compared to the standard ionic 5 on the door panel you have this checkered to flag pattern which adds to the performance feel and that Checkered Flag pattern is also repeated on the pedals you can see the dead pedal is huge and it has the pattern and then the accelerator and Brake also add this Checkered Flag performan pattern probably the biggest n upgrade in here though aside from the drive modes activated on the steering wheel in the infotainment system you can go into an N specific screen and there's actually a lot of different things to choose from in here in various readouts and displays and when you go right into this n mode on the info detainment one of the first screens you're shown over on the left side lets you toggle on and off various different end features including there's a drift mode that you can turn on and then obviously power will be more applied to the rear wheels that'll probably lessen traction and stability control so you can drift around you also have a feature called n torque Optimizer and this allows you to personally select where you want the torque to go between the front and rear the power for this car this is something you only want to do if you know what you're doing but you can do it and you do it on this screen and sort of use a slider to choose where you want the torque to go there's also a feature called n pedal which apparently enhances regen so you're driving around the track you only use a single pedal and there's a feature called n race which you can turn on and improves cooling to the battery obviously this will help the car keep going lap after lap on the racetrack since the battery can stay extra cool now beyond the toggle switches that let you configure various n items you also have a lot of other options and displays in this n infotainment screen for instance you can select a circuit that you're racing on and then I guess the car will optimize to the Circuit or at least it'll know where you are and show you on the screen the track map there's also a lap timer in here as you can see there's a readout that shows the percentage you're on the accelerator versus the brake pedal on the next screen it allows you to configure all sorts of different things from the accelerator pedal responsiveness to the steering responsiveness the suspension the limited slip diff you can control all of that right here and there's even a gForce meter that can show you in real time and historically how many G's you're pulling when you're driving your ionic 5n hard now it's worth pointing out that some of these displays will also show up in the gauge cluster directly in front of the steering wheel if you scroll through the configurable center screen you can turn turn up like the G meter a lap timer and a few other displays in addition to your usual regular stuff like the trip odometer and your tire pressure some of those displays are in there but I cannot get this gauge cluster display to give me a digital speed readout instead it shows an old school analog gauge with no digital readout so I have to look down and try to interpret it which is actually kind of annoying I've gotten so used to these digital gauge clusters and digital speeds that it's a little hard to do with that said the ionic 5n still does have one of Hyundai's great party tricks which is blind spot cameras integrated into this gauge cluster you put on the turn signal and the blind spot camera activates to the side where you're signaling so if you're changing lanes you don't really have to do a shoulder check you can just look down between your mirrors and this camera and see pretty much whatever is in the lane next to you whether you're going left or right it works both ways and it's a fantastic feature that other automakers should Implement and next up we move on to the back seat in the ionic 5n where there aren't as many changes for the N model as there are up front but there's a few things worth noting the most important is the sheer amount of rear seat room this isn't different at all from the standard ionic 5 but it's definitely worth talking about because there is so much space back here this car is magical in terms of its packaging even though it's a relatively small size similar to a compact crossover the interior is much bigger because they were able to pull it out since it doesn't have an engine in front to contend with so you have a lot of space in this interior it really is clear in the back just how big it is in here but beyond that changes to the N model are pretty limited you once again have the checkered flag pattern on the door sill with the little n logo there when you open up the door and you have the checkered flag pattern on the door panel itself that you can look at while you're riding along you have Alcantara seat centers again the same perforated alcanta that you had up front although the seat itself is a traditional flat bench there's no changes made to it to make it more aggressive and bolstered so you'll stay in place when cornering that's limited to the front seat now speaking of the front seat you look at the seat back and you see this hard contoured sport seat you don't exactly have a map pocket hanging off here where you can store stuff that's not the purpose of this car and you also have the N logo staring back at you from the seat back just a reminder of what you're riding in and finally we move on to the cargo area in the ionic 5n open up the tailgate and you can see the cargo area no real changes here compared to the standard model you have a wide flat space where you can actually put a lot of stuff although just like in the standard ionic 5 you are hindered a bit by the sloping roof design which will keep you from putting big boxes or transporting a massive desk in the back of your ionic 5 still you do have decent space back here and of course when you close the tailgate you take a look at the back of the ionic 5n you can see just like the regular car it keeps this cool pixelated tail light design which goes all the way across the entire rear of the car and when you have the headlights on it turns on these cool Square pixel tail lights that light up even more with the brake lights it all just looks very cool and certainly very distinctive up front you also have a pixelated Design This Time In The Headlights these squares that certainly look different from what you get in most vehicles with their sculpted angular headlights here it's just pixels and also like the regular ionic 5 you get this cool key fob which looks like a normal if oddly egg-shaped key fob at first glance but when you look closer the negative space between the buttons is actually the Hyundai logo which is a fantastic Quirk that I suspect a lot of people don't realize it's a wonderful little touch although for the ionic 5 n one upgrade you flip it over and you have the N logo there reminding you that you got the cool one so what's it like to drive this massively powerful compact electric crossover hatchback very eager let's find out all right driveing the ionic [Laughter] 5n wow that's FL that's fast wow that is pretty impressive it's especially impressive if you go into the NGB red button I'm going to press it here it says Ready 10 9 8 woo it doesn't really feel all that much faster to be honest not that it needed to it is incredibly fast this car is quite something it is uh it checks a lot of boxes actually um and it it impresses me in a lot of ways I already showed you the tech which is which is pretty good it's got excellent technology it's got nice luxury I mean you have nice equipment in this car you have nice you know leather seats and heated cool all the stuff you'd want great Interior Space by virtue of being an ionic 5 which is a well really well packaged car and now you combine it with acceleration that Rivals some of the great supercars of our entire history as human beings and it's a compelling package I will say amazing acceleration nice styling I like how the regular ionic 5 looked it's a little polarizing U people loved it when it first came out I've started to hear more negative opinions um now that it's kind of becoming more common it was a cool novelty and now it's like hm but I like the N I like the nend updates and touches uh that make it a little bit more interesting and exciting the ride quality is pretty good I'm actually kind of surprised by it you don't really feel the bumps like I would expect considering we have you know a 640 horsepower throw it around bigger Wheels thinner tires grippier like it's actually a pretty compliant riding car which means that you don't even really have to deal with the major drawback that a lot of these cars have which is that that rough ride thanks to the stiff suspension that helps it handle better now I will say the result of that is that it actually doesn't handle tremendously well um it's good it's fine but it isn't incredibly sharp around corners now in its defense none of its Rivals really are either so that's kind of okay but it definitely doesn't feel from a performance perspective in terms of going around corners like the hot hatchback that it kind of presents as um you know CU that's kind of my dilemma here is it a hatchback is it a crossover I think they would say it's a crossover an SUV for marketing purposes but when you look at the ground clearance the overall shape of it it kind of looks like a hatchback well it doesn't handle like a Golf R it definitely is a little bit lazier in terms of you know the way it the way it feels going around uh Corners worth pointing out uh regenerative braking is excellent in this car really good you can you can mostly do one pedal driving uh on the highest regen settings and self-driving or driver Assist Technology as they want us to say is also pretty good you do have really great Lane centering and Lane keeping as you go around and it does a good job of balancing the distance with the car in front now I'm currently in this drive mode that makes it shift gears and feel like a car with a transmission and I got to say it shifts gears and feels like a car with a transmission like in kind of a cool way um one of the drawbacks of electric car is you know being able to downshift and get high in the Rev range to prepare for an acceleration burst that's kind of a nice thing it's kind of a cool thing about having a you know a car with a transmission EVS have many many other benefits but that's one place at least from a from a mental performance perspective where they fall a little short this thing you can do that and actually kind of like get access to that power in sort of an interesting way you can downshift a few times and then you know go into the higher RPMs I I actually thought it sounded gimmicky and stupid but now that I'm driving it I really like how that system operates I'm not entirely sure about the piped in fake sound that it makes um you could make any sound at all why choose what sounds like kind of a a badly modified you know turbocharged four cylinder like a badly modified 500 of bar but but from a from an actual usability perspective I'm shocked by just how much I like it and how fun it is and I gotta say I think I would probably drive around using it it's kind of [Music] nice it even does like a little exhaust bural I don't know it's not so bad it actually works pretty well it really does a great job of simulating a transmission and gear changes like you really feel like that's what's happening there's a nice downshift and then I step step on it and go it actually takes some of the sanitized Driving Experience out of an electric car I wouldn't be surprised if other electric performance cars use this sort of thing to make themselves feel more engaging and more exciting I have a suspicion I I I think this has been executed surprisingly well and and I suspect it's going to be something that catches on especially among Performance electric cars that just dropping your foot and going is not thrilling enough for a generation of drivers who you know learned how to shift gears and this actually adds adds to the fun in in kind of a special way and for like a Ferrari you could always throw in the soundtrack of a 275 GTB 4 cam that would be pretty cool but anyway overall I think there's a lot to love here and I have really positive opinions of this car I like the regular ionic 5 I really like this one there's a few things I would change I don't think they're going to sell a lot of them I don't think there's a lot of people interested in a high performance vehicle at this price point I think the regular one has enough performance for 98% of people um but this really does check a lot of interesting boxes and it's yet another car that makes me feel a little bit less anxious about the coming EV Revolution when they can kind of do it all this well and so that's the new 2025 Hyundai ionic 5n wow this looks cool it's a thrill to drive it's loaded with great modern technology there's a lot to like it's a really impressive vehicle hicle now for the end specifically it has a pretty high price point but it delivers on basically everything from practicality to luxury to Performance there's a lot to love here and now it's time to give the new ionic 5n a Doug score and the Doug score is here 69 out of 100 which puts the ionic 5n here above the Ford Mustang Mach e GT and the Tesla Model y performance which are both fantastic EVS actually I think I prefer the Mach e and the model y for overall General use but the ionic 5 is simply more engaging and more exciting thanks to its simulated shifting sharp handling and amazing acceleration the ionic 5n is really shockingly fun and exciting I suspect it won't be popular but I also think the simulated shifting should be a benchmark for future performance [Applause] [Music] EVS for
