[Music] you're watching throttle house I'm Thomas and I'm James and this is the Hyundai ionic 5n [Applause] [Music] James you're here because you know something which you know you can't explain but you can feel it you felt it your entire life that there's something wrong with the world this this isn't this isn't working what why because I told you to be Morpheus I I am Morpheus like you gave me one evening to put the costume together this is the best I could do doesn't have a condom on his head it's a bald cap and the glasses with the no it's it was hard okay all the stores were closed right but the whole point is it it's got to be movie level because then we have to believe that the blue pill equals the ionic 5n no I know I brought the pills that is disgusting what's happened well the M&M M they got a bit melty they are M&M's aren't they okay the idea there was if Thomas was a proper film level Morpheus he would have explained that this is a giant blue pill this is choosing to be tricked and to be fooled because this is a car that has an end badge and in our experience there are sort of three pillars to Hyundai's n card affordability agility and flatulence but they've all been four-cylinder compact petrol cars so how can Hyundai's bloated family electric car possibly be agile or flatulent for that matter and if it's 20 grand more than the regular ionic 5 well then it's not affordable either on paper this thing simply cannot achieve endless which means it's going to have to attempt to redefine it so what could Hyundai possibly have in store that will persuade us to choose the blue pill and accept an artificial reality well let's start with the fact that Hyundai have given the ionic 5n dual personality disorder because right now it feels like a normal ionic 5 and I've been living with this and apart from the noticeably stiffer suspension and the sport seat which are wicked by the way supportive not too firm it can feel like a normal ionic 5 and then you press a bunch of buttons and it is massively over complex system and suddenly you have a fake 8-speed transmission with fake engine sound the execution of which is so good it feels properly like an 8-speed transmission it sounds good it does fake burbles when you come off throttle first gear is tall if I go into fifth gear or sixth gear it it lugs it's fake luggy that's a fake lug and I feel so normal I'm just my brain is trigged this is when I realize I am just a monkey in shoes because it shouldn't be that easy to trick [Music] me slap my ass and call me Sally I'm solded and I can put different sounds on that's this is the ignition sound this is evolution that sounds a lot more [Music] electronic and then there's Super Sonic [Music] [Applause] which has an explosion at the end and even crazier is I have stuff like I can hit the rev [Music] limiter that's not real it's not real did you see how the car moved it moved as though I hit a real rev limiter I don't understand I'm so confused and I'm so impressed is this red pill or blue pill territory if it's done so well what difference does it make if if beyond meat tastes exactly like me and I save a cow why wouldn't I do it this is the first car in a long time I have picked up and live with and the just driving at home I've just laughed people at hyai are just having fun engineered fake fun the last engineered Korean thing I had that was really good was a bibing bath but it turns out their Joy extends to cars and man does it have some performance performance that needs some room to stretch its legs so I headed over to our drag strip where thanks to our friends at car Hub here in Ontario there was a nasty but rather unexpected competitor waiting for me oh look another fast utility vehicle that has almost 5,000 curb weight and a real 8-speed transmission and allhe Drive except he has 641 horsepower I have 601 unless I activate enrin boost or the launch control in which case we both have 641 except the difference is his has a Lamborghini badge 5 4 3 2 1 go neck and neck neck and neck and he's off where's where's the Uris G that wasn't even a race that wasn't even a race the Korean Eevee box beat the Raging Bull okay let's let Thomas have a little play on the track all right let's see what she's got oh that sounds like a real car that's weird all right this is the most confusing thing I've ever used on a vehicle so I think I've got it in the most aggressive modes and I've got the traction control off oh Jesus y kicks the rear out right away all I care about is that it doesn't show its mass too much and it is engaging to drive if it can do those two things it's an EV that interests me and like immediately first turn in to any of these Corners I'm I can feel that outside front tire I can feel it digging in I can feel it starting to skid and slide telling me where the under steer is and there isn't much under steer because any amount of throttle or even off throttle as well it rotates really nicely oh that's good why is this so good to drive what's happening all right high speed on the brakes turn in oh pogoing a little bit on its suspension there even though I'm not in the stiffest mode but yeah oh that's fun that's fun okay look at this just dabs of opposite lock oh my God that's good all right let's let's you know let's stop messing around let's see what she's got all right we're going to turn on this n drift Optimizer thing you oh my God use the end drift India only on dedicated RAC tracks India may not comply with the laws of the country and is responsible for complying with laws the country using this function may cause premature tie wear and damage no sh ndo is available when all the following conditions are met motor and Sport Plus mode in end mode or n custom mode so sport motor yes ESC is off while pressing while pressing the brake pedal hard in drive neutral or pressing the brake pedal hard okay end drift Optimizer is on the operating conditions for end drift Optimizer have not been met okay I I'll watch the tutorial's okay it's only available and rear wheel drive I wish we had staged this scene but we didn't I literally couldn't figure out the modes eventually James came over and after some incar and YouTube tutorials we managed to get the ionic 5n in its rear wheel drive only drift mode which an knowingly as it turns out means turning off all the fun sounds and fake transmission who okay it's a bit it's a bit Lively okay I see I see okay that's a new experience feels different feels different I mean I wish I could have it in the in the Shifty mode when I'm doing the skids cuz I want to hear the engine I I I use the those gears as like a reference point to you know how much throttle I need to give it I like that it was doing that why can't I have both at the same [Music] time there we go getting the hang of it it's different it's different to it's different to a normal ice car other than the fact that it it seems to decide when you're done a drift as opposed to you it's quite quite excellent definitely one of the best I don't know I guess fake drifts I've done in a [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] car I will say though that on entry and mid drift you are on your own which thank you y day that's that's the way it should [Music] be okay time for the lap time as usual these laps were recorded at the beginning of the day when the tires were still fresh and this is the fastest of three laps allowed now the ionic 5n weight is really the only downside to this car you really feel it under breaking and slowing the car down is very challenging and often it gets unsettled on midc Corner bumps even though I didn't have the car in the stiffest suspension mode I did have it in Sprint mode though which is designed to be the fastest for lap times like this but unfortunately you don't get the cool motor and shifting sounds but that's okay because the rest of the experience is more than engaging enough it feels really well balanced the steering is surprisingly talkative when loaded up and I could steer the car easily with the throttle once I got it slowed down and settled into the braking Zone properly finding apex's was super easy hardly any under steer at all but it is quite a wild car to drive you can see me constantly using the steering to settle the rear end it's a very active car tons of fun and quite quick midc corner and Corner exit but it does feel a bit let down overall by the grip level of those tires let's watch the rest of the lap okay here we go from the sidelines that L like a little bit of a handful you scared the crap out of me when you were breaking on the straight the uh well the cars are right off what you I all over the seats that even then the end can't come in light colored seats no just dark just for that reason yeah because you even War me you're like careful you're going to go off and turn one I was like cuz I felt it on the on the drag race of the breaking Zone I felt it but then you know what I did I break way earlier than I thought I was going to and I still almost lost it it is a serious hand for this car lot of I saved a life today I saw it ripping out the corners though it is a very quick car I'm guessing I'm guessing all right you're going to guess what do you got I'm thinking despite its power because of its weight yep it's somewhere in the fl5 Civic typar area the one mid 113s so just ahead of a Tesla Model 3 Performance okay but just behind something like a model S pla or an M2 comp okay or must GT yeah that was pointless that was a waste of everyone's time us you're wrong what it did a one 1244 whoa so I believe it's in between the ct4v Blackwing and the model S PLA and the model S so this tracks as quickly as a non-track pack model S plaid yes that is well the model S plaid out here was a steaming hunk of crap without the track but I I really wasn't sure how this was going to shake up well it's just okay so I don't really know exactly what part of the car the performance came from whether it was like just obviously the insane power coming down the straights or the I but I'd like to I'd like to accredit it to the handling balance cuz I felt like I really could get it to the Apex it's like there it is and I and I made it there every time I could rotate on the throttle I rotate off the throttle it was great fun we haven't been disappointed by an n n car yet no honestly no it's it is a seriously spicy little car to drive and I enjoy little it's not little it's not little and it successfully successfully tricks you into thinking it's an ice car yes it does I'm going to put this in here now we don't like I watched a video last week on the internet where else the specifying while I was watching I was watching one horse but it wasn't they were doing that thing where they collect it they trick it and they move it but the whole time it thinks it's so I felt in this car that I was that horse so I still got off okay do you know what I mean well I do because we're going to have to censor all of it they won't have any idea I'm going to stop browsing Reddit by all just GNA just getting bit Yeah okay uh yeah anyway thank you for that uh this is a great looking car by the way fantastic you know it is though it's 10% too big in every Dimension I would say 20% it photographs like a hot hatch and it's it's massive and it's it's deceiving it's deceiving however looks so good though proportions are perfect the end stuff is great with the red and the and the air duct and the you know the performance blue little end bag this comes in fun colors as well there's something satisfying about how thin this badge is by the way I don't know if weight savings weight saing 100% yeah that's where that's where they say a giant spoiler it well it doesn't look like a spoiler but like the car starts here the car is here that that's all spoiler right there I already look it looks like a toy it absolutely looks like a toy you know it's been sitting in my driveway and it just like nothing says toy like this color combination but they have other fun stuff they're Soul tronic orange you can get this in like a gloss metallic orange I saw that it looks good you can get it in a matte gray yeah black normal gray I think I would do this on the matte gray I honestly I like it in every color I've seen it but I think that the the the matte colors suit this little design bit here better yeah matte color yeah the matte paint like this little like angle crunchy side that's true that's true for the normal ionic F that's exactly right but nice I'm not I'm not over the Retro tail lights or headlights or anything I think it's still super fun and it's it's got a noon marker it does that's not new marker so you so you can figure out your apexes on the front end um should we pop inside and have a look what they done yeah okay okay oh look it's a super computer I I still don't understand how to work this car because not only are there a million different screens and menus like there's performance stuff here but then there's also performance options here and then you scroll down there's more there and then you go back here but you can do those things in that menu as well but if you if you don't have certain parameters that it won't let you go into them and you can't activate them from here I still actually don't know the scenario in which you can use this toggle for the end drift Optimizer conditions not met is something we've been seeing all day and then we've somehow managed to jimy yeah because you got to have it like in this mode so that thing's on but you can't have the sound on and then you can do it's just you'll be pleased to know I watched a 3 minute tutorial to how to get into the right launch control stressful man and that starts with make sure you go to the end mode press uh oh oh see no you're out this yeah and then press the tutorial right it's like it's like a video make sure you watch a tutorial on how to work your car yeah so see where am I now how do I get to the oh turned the engine on that give a REV [Music] yeah just hold it just hold it down give my mechanical sympathy says that I shouldn't do that that's fun though it is really so much fun it's just so silly so we got some end stuff going on obviously we got end amounts of buttons on the steering wheel yeah yeah yeah yeah Batman's over here per the steering wheel we got these bucket seats which are I think pretty good I've done long Journeys in them now this armrest is a bit hard uh I suppose it's a bit hard yeah does it move at all no just no slidy console thingy yeah no slidy console that was one of our favorite things yeah well still most of the ionic 5 stuff is present tons of storage rear seat passengers have tons of leg room oh and you yeah so you can and you can also still move forward recline it Harrison who's 6'6 also can fit super comfortably y that's one of the benefits of it being an absolutely massive car I will say that this is one of my favorite shifter designs I like it right like it's really easy it's like you just knock down you go boom and you put it in put it in drive or they're doing that on their ice cars now they do Happ what happens when you push it up and down what does that mean oh nothing happens it's just a twisty okay good backup cameras by the good great backup camera fun head- up display with really great graphics yep you know we don't we lose sun roof privileges it gets dark yeah but I mean I suppose save weight well where you can because I I think this has been such a lovely I don't know we I feel like we've done a slew of good cars recently because I'm just I just or just something's right with the world but it just feels happy and this is just hope in a car yeah well because yeah this absolutely is hopeful because if we can find a way to make these a little bit lighter and have a little bit more range I I'm fine with this as as a potential future like I do want to be able to drift in the cool Shifty modes that's depressing yeah yeah make it fun everywhere but like but I mean otherwise this has just been yeah the keys light that's a bit boring very it feels cheap yeah but my question to you is I don't think this is priced terribly no but it is so expensive though no I agree with you it's but but it won't be in a in a week but like in terms of the yeah know I know in terms of the performance like like what would the the what were the cars that were right near it on the leaderboard in terms of raw performance yeah um be an Urus in a drag race first of all be anur Mustang pp2 track uh ct4v Blackwing how much are those similar similar price to this right would you get between I get C4 the back that's a stupid question don't ask me that what about FY what about a BMW m340i um if this had an extra 30 40 50 60 100% more range than it does really suffers from that really sucks really suff 350 km range then I would consider that and we were talking about this you you you were saying like I don't think no one's going to it's not a track car but we have drove we drove it here from a supercharger or a fast charger we tracked it all day long and now we're at 17% % you probably have just enough to get back to the charger we did a tal lapse I don't think I do have enough you might not be able to get home yeah but it's okay that's not relevant to me I'll be home in my bed cozy comfy warm and you're on the side of the road with a tow truck that's you know that's the life you've chosen if you have an EV and especially this one yeah the question is though that the big one that I have for you Mr Engelman is would you take the red or the blue pill I have to speak to my office about that James this is it this is your last chance you take the blue pill the story ends you wake up in your ionic 5 believing whatever you want to believe you take the red pill you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes thank you oh it was blue [Laughter] okay honestly did not plan that at all it could have been any color from that bag but Jokes Aside that is most likely the pill we would take after much discussion we agreed that allowing the ionic 5n to trick us into a good time is a reality we are willing to accept also there's precedent for it in the car World almost all modern petrol sports cars manipulate sound and feedback to make the car seem more exciting than than it is so why can't an EV that does mean it comes with EV drawbacks though and gasoline sports cars still exist and are still being released and revealed so while we aren't embedded deeply in an EV only future yet why not get one of those instead of one that fakes it even if it does fake it really well but if you look at it from the perspective of it being an already good EV that has been molded into something that can give you a speeding straight line performance a frankly incredible lap time and genuine n levels of fun then it is a wondrous success in making the ionic 5n Hundai have proved that the future for car enthusiasts is a little heavy okay a lot heavy but no less bright thanks for
