welcome to extra throttle house I'm Thomas and I'm James and this is the Subaru BRZ Zed yes he said yeah sorry quick disclaimer in Canada and actually the rest of the world other than the states the rest of the entire world we say Zed yeah but we'll say Z because we want to accommodate everyone exactly you're probably wondering why we haven't got around to this car yet because it's been out for a minute I'm wondering that as well uh don't know anyway here it is we did it we brought it up and you know what I don't want that to take away from the fact that this is an incredibly important car in fact between this and the 86 or the gr GT FRS yep the twins yeah half of our team either owns or has owned this car yeah I used to own a 2013 of this you did or Sound Engineering tool Manchester Harrison owns a 2013 BRZ as well he's knighting 2013 BRZ and Carson are genius editor and racing man also has an FRS that he's badged a Toyota cheeky which is cheeky bus and our cameraman Dan is thinking about buying one that doesn't count but half of the team has owned or owns this yeah that's how special it is and that's because it follows the proper sports car for me oh yes because it's one of those cars where our team and us are lucky enough to drive a lot of cars and we're filming them and testing them and everybody always ends up just going I might as well buy one of these yeah it just drives so well A wise man once said the true measure of a great sports car is not about how much power it has but about how many pounds it doesn't weigh and this at 2800 something pounds Jason Camuto is in the under 3 000 pound Club how many cars are in that club right now for new cars Civic SI this the 86 the Miata winning at 2 400 pounds whatever it's the size of a peanut of course of course it's like the newest Lotus on sale the Emira is like 33 34 pounds yeah even a Lotus so this is more true to the Lotus philosophy than a Lotus is so visually here this is an important discussion we might be near a school ground um to where the cameras are pointed this way I'm not allowed Within 500 yards so the front end of this is happy it's a happy frog face happy frog face yes and the in the uh oh my God what's the name of it now it's not an FRS it's not a Toyota C6 the gr86 has the angry sports car face and it has a more Angry uh duck duck spoiler duck lid I do this for a living dog tail the tribe is a special edition so I even had crazy stripes and stuff yeah and I like the I like the rear end of this there's a few slight changes aesthetically and people have either decided they like this or the other one there's also some other things of choice is the important thing here sure and well in Canada we get this for a slight deal this is two thousand dollars cheaper than the 86 in Canada that's weird whereas I think in us there's a price parity so this is the sport Tech it's the fully optioned manual and it runs about 35 000 Canadian or this in the US which is a good price for for for how much car you get now especially considering we know after testing the 86 gr86 that they have fixed a few of the key issues like the torque dip and obviously when we drive it'll be reminded of these this even has some mechanical differences though to that car it does shall we investigate them yeah I've been driving this a lot did you want to drive okay okay all right little chirp a little chirp 228 horsepower from a 2.4 liter boxer engine that has had no problems at all zero things have happened to the Twin car on the track where the manufacturer didn't honor the warranty that wasn't Subaru no that was Toyota that was Toyota you know a lot of a lot of stuff is coming out about this people are concerned about this fa engine because they there's you know there's an issue with apparently oil pickup at oil pressure on Long right-hand sweepers on the track even on the stock tires that level of stickiness and but that is one of the key differences between this and the 86 yes is the suspension so the 86 or 86 has a stiffer rear end and a softer front end this is the opposite it's the opposite of that so it's kind of on brand right the Toyota want it to be more drifty more tail happy yeah just like the Supra which is so tail happy it's the mostest tale happening where is this yeah Subaru yeah it's more understory and friendlier to the Daily Drive yeah it's not just the sway bars well the sway bars in the front actually this this one has got a hollow sway bar yes save some weight and it has some aluminum suspension components I don't know exactly but I believe it's the it's the knuckle it's a knuckle right steering knuckle which is iron in the Toyota right so we save a little bit of unsprung mass which is nice we still don't love the sounds no I just don't love it I've never liked it powerful it feels quick it feels it feels definitely quicker and there's no more torque dip which we've obviously gone over before basically every issue that I had with the previous gen of this car they have pretty much fixed including this armrest right here I don't know if you can see that in this camera but it's soft and there's a spot to put your elbow there literally wasn't before it didn't exist it didn't exist there was a cup holder or a gap and you just had to float your arm it was stupid can be driven very gently if we've driven a lot of cars lately on long distances that are just loud all the time and this is really not that it feels like a modern car no question right it's still sports car and it's demeanor yes and it feels Back to Basics in here like it's not none of the materials are particularly fancy the steering wheel I don't like this thing I like the old one better the thicker one not the not the old one but the old old one versions on the wheel right it was just simpler yeah do you remember when that came out they were like we didn't put buttons on the wheel it's a driver focused car two years later they're like we put buttons on the wheel it happened it's got better tires than the previous one this is yes Michelin PS4s which it was always criminally under tired and this is weird usually the ram is going up your bottom you're not going up his bottom and I intimidate him you don't know it's playful it feels soft yeah I've always said this is a more serious car than the MX-5 and it it is in some ways but it still maintains that sort of Joyful turning it it's still yes no matter what you do to soften one of these the center of gravity is still low it's still light it's still stiff right the chassis not the suspension that's quick it is it is quick enough it's naturally aspirated so you get to feel it this is this is a a quieter front end on this yeah so like when I drove I drove the on these exact roads I drove the 86 uh recently or sound man Harrison had it for the week and the front end was like a little dirty it was a little sharp it was fun but this is a much calmer experience overall I I honestly love these seats I know they've been a topic of controversy because well using it too narrow Harrison thinks they're too narrow yeah the the the thing was was that the previous gen did that really good thing that the the Type R did which is make the bolsters vertical and put them far apart so that you have a nice big spot to sit this one has done the bolsters on an angle so you're kind of sitting on the bolster a little bit I feel alive I feel that I don't mind it though I I drove when I bought my VR said I bought it in 2015 I bought it used and I drove it immediately from Toronto I bought it on a Monday yeah and on Tuesday I drove to Texas where you got coraled this is so funny it was emasculating it's so naturally The Next Step was to buy a Miata if that hadn't happened maybe I wouldn't learn an MX5 we'll still do that yeah so I still have traction control on there that was what traction control was because this like the MX-5 has a very what's the word well I don't know what is it what is the word a substitute teacher or a babysitter lets you get away with stuff um cowardly this has a very cowardly traction control system where it does that it makes you a mess about it can actually mess about unless you get away with a lot but this is the one thing that these cars have always done that are even the best sports cars sometimes don't do when the rear goes in one of these It Feels So flat you can really you can really feel it it's so obvious the way that it moves and it's so stiffness that is just the best part about this car is the weight of the rear it breaks away and for me these cars were always a perfect starter car to learn how to track a car but just ripping it around these roads it's just fun well they're still fun it's a perfect learner car the clutch is light it's easy but then you know what you're doing with it the shifter is it's a short feeling shifter even if it's got a long uh knob along with all the words I've never heard that phrase before no it's got a long knob it's satisfying the satisfaction at every touch point of this car I don't know I don't know if I can see like I can we can pick and choose bad things to say about these cards but it's pointless frankly it's pointless there's nothing else there's nothing else that touches this right yeah yeah that's it so don't listen to anything we say this is a pointless video go buy one of these if you want a sports car that's affordable period And if you want to sign yourself the version of the 86 then you get this one yeah and if you like the style of the 86 we were talking about it can you just put the front of an 86 you can probably swap them if you were either to like wrap it afterwards and I'm sure the parts would be expensive but yeah you can do whatever you want it's like Lego fixed right fixed one of the best looking best driving cars not just under 40 Grand but under 70 grand even under 150 Grand in terms of the way it feels there you go this is 150 000 sports car that's quite a conclusion and that is what some dealers will charge
