[Music] nice what makes a sports car I think we might have lost sight of what makes a sports car I'm sitting in the toota gr86 and it's it's totally different to everything else that sports car language is telling me right now Instagram tells me that everything has to be faster more accelerative more expensive I think that might be bollocks don't you because this little Toyota has a manual handbrake a thing called a gear lever in six gears it has three pedals and a little thin steering wheel it doesn't tell me how fast is around the Nur green cuz I suspect it couldn't give a monkeys so we're going to drive this a bit on the road on the track and maybe celebrate some Simplicity some going back to what being a sports car is all about now I'm often accused of only driving these cars on circuits and then I don't acknowledge real world driving well here we are on the Clifton Downs doing 20 mph doing my real world driving but fear not I've done 500 miles of rigor testing in this car and I can tell you this the ride's quite firm you do sit just about low enough the steering wheel is wonderful it's quite noisy the mvh is noisy the difference between this and a normal car is on a Motorway Journey you get a bit of a thrum in the air after a couple of hours the quality is high there's nothing too fancy about it the surfaces feel quite ordinary but I just don't care this is such a sweet Road car because it has just the right amount of torque talk for the grip available so every time it's a bit damp and you accelerate it does a bit of a wiggle and a squirm and you feel special but that's about it it doesn't do great big slides there's no suggestion it's going to throw you off the road so there you go that's my onroad review the boot's big enough the radio is powerful enough the telephone is a bit quiet sometimes other than that she's a banger right here's a bit of uh very basic monkey Harris philosophy I do believe that the older we get the more accommodating we become I try and see the good in as many things as I can now I try to be adaptable but fundamentally I am a difficult bastard and I do quite like things where I like them I like manual gearboxes I like rear wheel drive and I do like normally aspirated engines I know I talk about turbocharging like I love it and I can love it but it takes a car like this to remind me that actually there is a recipe for sports cars that if you can deliver it you should and this is it I've driven so many supercars this year that have got steering wheels that are too thick that have paddles shift gear boxes I don't like that have steering that doesn't move around in your hands at all and yet this £ 32,000 Toyota Nails it all it's better than all of them does make you wonder doesn't it what a little [Music] thing have you ever wondered what car is fastest well we're going to show you I'm Chris Harris this is nandal laps got some gra in this new series we'll have five pairs of rival cars all of them to dive for they're going to go head-to-head in a series of Grudge matches and of course at the end we will reveal an Undisputed [Music] winner me this is a wild ride you got guys timing energy W this is going to be a quality Duster [Music] this is a car that when it was the GT86 I made lots of noise about because I loved the concept I love what it stood for affordability rear wheel drive it moved away from all the stuff that was annoying me about the car industry well this gr86 which yes you can't buy anymore because legislation's killed it typical story but you can buy used ones and I'm sure we'll have one on car soon is a step on a 2.4 L engine I've got 30 more horsepower I've got more than 13 foot PBS of torque but crucially whereas the peak torque uh output reached was reached at about 6 and 1 12,000 RPM in the old car this time it's below 4,000 which totally transforms the way it drives why have I not one of these things before it's absolutely superb right now I can apply everything in third and fourth and most of it in second as well so I don't need to leave the systems on to demonstrate anything I could just drive the car as I want to what have I got when I turn the wheel the car rolls yes the structure stiffer suspension's a bit stiffer but it's still ultimately quite a softly sprung car and I love that because roll roll is a message to your bottom that your cornering and how much Corner grip you've got and also helps you feel your way into the road surface this car is definitely giving me information about the grip levels as they change on the circuit you don't get that very often these days you used to get it the whole time every time I get a bit of over steer it happens quite predictably slowly so I can basically adapt with some steering input there you go lovely this engine is completely different to the one in the GT86 cuz it's got enough torque to get you up the road without you just flashing it and feeling that your efforts are not worthwhile doesn't sound brilliant I have to say but so much more effective oh I tell you what a lot of car makers have really have really got the wrong idea they need to go and drive these things cuz this is just fantastic disappointing part it's got a massive amount of flywheel weight on it when you back off the throttle it doesn't really want to shed revs so you have to be very accurate with your heing Towing and and declutching you got to get in there very accurate otherwise you'll find the car wanting to push on as you break which is not a nice feeling as we all know here's a question that I have been asked before if you couldn't afford a 991 touring GT3 what car would you buy and I've always said well you buy an M2 or you'd buy something with a manual gear box I think you need to put this on the list maybe above some of those other cars because even though it doesn't have the ultimate performance if you want to enjoy that sensation of normally aspirated rear wheel drive I'm not sure you need to look any further so this is a pound shop GT3 touring that's quite a nice thing to say about w
