2022 Rivian R1T: Which One to Buy?

hey what's going on i'm jeff glucker with autotrader and today we're doing another which one to buy uh if you've been paying attention you know that the rivian r1t is making a bit of noise right now because all the first drive reviews are landing out there our own micah muzio from kelly blue book that side of the family he just drove one his review is extensive it's excellent the footage is great because it was shot in the rockies you should go watch that there's a going to be a title card somewhere up here probably but here on autotrader today we're looking at which one to buy so i would love to say by the r1s the suv because i think it looks awesome but that is not available yet so we are here and we're gonna click and let's dive in r1t all right you come to the page it's nice and big and bold there's a beautiful blue r1t staring you in the face and you come over here to configure now now we're dealing with an expensive vehicle this is not a cheap purpose this is not a cheap purchase the cheapest version of this is the sixty seven thousand five hundred dollar explore package and you can choose between adventure package and explore package the launch edition is sold out what do you get with the adventure package you get a nicer interior and you get the powered tonneau cover now it ribbon does a good job on their configurator and we are on their configurator page here of showing you the differences the large battery pack comes standard on both you don't have to worry about that you get heated and ventilated seats on the adventure package both of them get an air compressor which is awesome um but i'm going with the slightly more expensive adventure package because it does have a nicer interior it has a upgraded meridian sound system it just has better finishes and the ventilated seats are a nice touch as well because we're already spending money on these and there's about a six thousand dollar spread between the two to kick it off we're diving right in because we're going to spend more money as we go along this so we are starting with an adventure package truck now the next big option here is the battery pack it's funny the base battery pack is called the large pack but it is a healthy battery pack that gives you over 300 miles per the epa epa estimated that's awesome that's great that's wonderful however i was reading some reviews that rivien is estimating if you're running chunkier tires you can see a 10 to 15 range hit that's not insignificant even though we're dealing with an amount of range that won't give you range anxiety it's still a significant hit on top of that we don't know range numbers when you're towing and this can tow up to eleven thousand pounds and that's going to be a big hit to range so because we're already spending a ton of money there is a max battery pack a kilowatt hour battery pack available that extends range to over 400 miles so then those range hits are less significant they're still not they're not insignificant but they're far less significant it's 10 000 bucks however if you're buying this truck i'm gonna go ahead and say it's worth it now if you're not planning on if you're just buying this for an around town daily driver you're not gonna take it on trails you're never gonna tow with it you will be fine with the large pack i would buy this and i would love to take it camping i would love to take it on trips i would get the max pack 10 000 is a huge chunk of money but it's not like we're starting with something that's already crazy cheap to begin with so max pack for me now on to paint ribbon is offering some pretty solid colors right out of the gate uh the the base one the silver is free white's free and then everything else costs money silver or white are free the blue looks fantastic the yellow looks awesome however this color far is green which is cheaper than blue and yellow it's 1500 bucks is excellent especially with the slight gold tint around the badging and the yellow calipers and all that stuff forest green is where it's at now onto wheels and tires you get a 21-inch wheel as standard with what looks to be a pirelli probably an all-season um which is fine and here's why they do offer an all-terrain they offer a couple different all-terrains and the truck looks awesome it jumps down in size to a 20 inch so you get chunky tire in there there are three different versions of the all-terrain they range in price from 1800 on up to 3 500 not cheap there is a 22 inch sportier wheel that ranges from 1800 to 3500 i'm sticking with the standard 21 inch wheel because i'm going to go in the aftermarket and downsize to a 20 at a better price and get tires with it from there nice chunky ko2 maybe a falcon wild peak or a toyo open country i'd go ko2 i'm pretty partial to the bfg's however the fact that you don't need to get the you just get the the wheel that comes standard with the truck and then in the aftermarket put your own wheels and tires on it downsize to the 20 get some chunk on there the truck looks awesome with the chunk so we're saving a little bit of dough there you could save dough in the next spot too by not opting for the full-size spare because you don't want another 21-inch wheel there because you can just buy the 20 and the chunky tire and store it in the spot under the bed where that 21 would have gone so even more money saved well i mean it's not like it's a bargain but it's still nice now this one you could go either way and this comes back to what you're going to do if you're getting the battery or not as well there's something they call an off-road upgrade i wish it was a bit more to it but the truck seems like it's already pretty capable so the off-road upgrade adds two tow hooks in the front and it reinforces the underbody the underbody is already protected because that's where the battery lives but this reinforces it further so for that reason and because i personally would take this on the trails i'm adding it you can see it out of the tow hooks onto the interior so there's two colors that are included on the adventure package this black mountain which looks good the open pore wood looks fantastic this much lighter ocean coast which also looks wonderful and then the best choice of the three is the forest edge but it's two grand so i'm gonna save us a little bit of money here and go with ocean coast um hopefully my my child wouldn't mess this up if i was opting for this one if you're worried about that just get the black mountain for this particular build i'm going with the ocean coast and you move down the configurator to what they call the adventure gear section here's where it's going to get a bit more contentious as well one of the things that ribbian offers is something they call their camp kitchen it's a whole kitchen set it is amazing it is built in that storage tunnel behind the passenger compartment it slides out it has an induction cooking stove it has cutlery it has everything you need to cook out in a camp setup it's five thousand dollars that it's an awesome setup how well integrated it is however if you already go camping you already have all this stuff it's not going to be as neat and slide out like that as it does on this vehicle but you already have this stuff and you have it for way less than five thousand dollars um so as cool of a party trick as this is i'm going to avoid it five thousand dollars is it's i'm not saying it's not worth it because it's so well integrated and engineered and it's really neat it's not for me i already have all the stuff i need for for cooking and coffee and all that stuff so i'm avoiding that one next one the three person tent with the cargo crossbars for 2600 it's neat that they teamed up with the aqua for this i don't like rooftop tents um they raise the center of gravity of a vehicle granted the rivien is already really low so it would likely be okay but you're you're putting drag on the vehicle and this is an ev that needs you know all the range it can get all that stuff i do not like three person i do not like rooftop tents i'm sure this one is well engineered it's not for me saving money there open it up this one is tough for me because they make something called the gear tunnel shuttle which if you get the um the camp kitchen thing this is part of it because this is what this stuff slides out on so if you just get the tunnel i'm gonna click this so you can see it's really cool that's a really neat little table it's made from uh aircraft-grade aluminum it has spots to plug in for power so you could charge stuff while you're out there it's just a really cool little table and i like it a lot however it's fifteen hundred dollars and again if you already go camping you probably have a table that folds up really nicely so this falls back into that so i'm not selecting that either though that one is really cool um cargo crossbars i'm also avoiding because with if i'm putting my mountain bike in this i have a over the bed i'm just hanging it over the bed because that's a really easy quick way to do that on a pickup truck and your mountain bike so i don't need all the crossbars and the bike mounts and all that stuff i will be adding though unless you already have one of these and you don't need it ribbon sells a wall charger for 500 and then it says with this wall charger you get 25 miles of range for every hour of charging so sitting at home this thing will be fully charged all the time 500 bucks seems like a pretty good deal for that so i would opt for that and i've selected that um the last bit on this gear is they offer all-weather floor mats for 175 which is in line with what you'd find for any vehicle for all weather floor mats so i would add those so i'm not ruining this wonderful interior the off-road recovery kit for 600 it looks like a nice kit but if you're going off-roading you already have this stuff it comes in a nice bag it's got shackles and ropes and gloves and all this stuff it looks again like a really nice kit um but you don't need it if you already have it this last one though is kind of neat it's a field kit it's basically an emergency kit that fits in the door the passenger side door and it's 150 bucks and it has tons of stuff in it um you know basically if you came across an accident in the field or on the road you could really help out a victim before an ambulance and emts arrived it even has a life straw it has a rescue blanket it has tons of stuff um you're taking up space inside the door but that is so much stuff for the price which this at 150 bucks at this point i'm adding it because it's so neatly integrated and it literally is a really well thought out emergency kit so let's click summer look at that beautiful beautiful green paint we've done the adventure package we've added the big battery um the paint costs money we're keeping the wheels the same we've done the off-road upgrade and then the interior was not an extra charge but then we added the wall charger the floor mats in the field kit to arrive at a final estimated price of eighty seven thousand three hundred and twenty five dollars now expensive truck very expensive truck but potentially game changing first to market in the segment really really cool looking machine um with some really nice tech some standout styling that you know it's its own thing you know it's not copying anybody else's styling you can only do so much with the truck but ribbon has managed to make their truck stand out it looks good all reports say it drives real really well on road and off-road so you go you're going to expect these to not be cheap and this one doesn't look cheap and if i were building a rivien r1t this is how i would do it
