Top 10 Features of the Rivian R1S Electric Adventure SUV

[Music] even though rivien has not released a single car to the market it is building itself to be a formidable force in the ev industry the electric car maker is still about to start manufacturing and delivery for its adventure pickup truck the r1t manufacturing and delivery of the r1s electric adventure suv is expected to start sometime after the r1t deliveries the futuristic r1t is an all-electric pickup truck or rivien's first truck and the r1s is rivien's first suv the suv promises between 250 and 400 miles of driving range and lightning quick acceleration slated to start deliveries in august 2021 the suv is just a few inches longer than the tesla model xsuv the r1s will be amongst the first full-sized family electric suv with great specs and a spacious and futuristic interior the rivien r1s is going to be a seven passenger sport utility vehicle the 2021 rivien r1s takes direct aim at the tesla model x which is the only other three-row all-electric suv currently exciting features of the rivian r1s in no particular order most of these features are also found in the r1t electric adventure truck the company is making what's new for 2021 both the r1s and the rivian brand itself are new entries in the suv marketplace the company says it'll start delivering to customers in august 2021 it kicks off with a launch edition that starts at seventy thousand dollars but a more affordable explore trim level will join the lineup presumably as a 2022 model the r1s will be sold directly to consumers although rivian says that it also will set up a network of service centers and tesla-like stores tank turn the tank turn has only been demonstrated on the r1t but it's an almost guaranteed feature for the suv since the drivetrain and software on both vehicles are identical the tank turn will be more of a show-off feature for the rivian r1s same as on the r1t the suv's 4 motor setup gives it the ability to control the direction and speed of each wheel independently for instance both front and rear wheels of the right side of the car may spin forward while the two on the left side spin backwards this opposing tyre spin direction will allow the car spin in one spot like a tank real world applications for this for example may be when you get to a dead end on a one-way trail it's also fun it looks very exciting on the r1t built-in flashlight just like a rolls-royce that built an umbrella into the back door of the car rivian in a similar way has built a flashlight into the back door of the rivien r1t truck since both vehicles are meant to be hardcore adventure vehicles we suspect the r1s will have the flashlight feature as well this feature further distinguishes the r1s as the ultimate adventure electric family suv the flashlight is also powered by the same 21 to 70 battery cell that makes up the entire battery pack of each rivian suv the car will recharge the flashlight's battery when it is slotted in automatically so it's ready to go next time you need it alexa commands amazon is one of the most prominent investors in rivian the e-commerce giant invested 700 million last year and ordered 100 000 electric delivery vans from rivian which the car maker has already started shipping so it's no surprise that amazon's alexa smart assistant is so deeply integrated to operate many features of the truck and the suv some of these features include voice commands to open the front trunk or the front we don't yet know what those commands are subscribe so that you will be the first to know what the commands are when we do performance and range the 2021 r1s shares its battery packs powertrains much of its styling and many of its specs with its r1t pickup sibling the r1s will be available with 105 135 and 180 kilowatt hours battery packs with the largest of the three boasting a range of 400 miles according to rivian the base model will deliver 250 plus miles of range while the mid-range model will go over 300 miles the top horsepower 135 kilowatt hours model has a claimed zero to minus 60 miles per hour time of 3.0 seconds but even the slowest of the three versions should hit 60 miles per hour in less than 5.0 seconds every version of the r1s has an electric motor at each wheel giving it all-wheel drive and impressive off-road capability all models will ship with adjustable air suspension at launch and can vary their ground clearance from 8 to 14.5 inches towing and payload capacity every version of the r1s has all-wheel drive with an electric motor at each wheel this amount of available power will be able to carry a payload capacity of 1800 pound and be able to tow more than 7 700 pounds lower than the r1t which has a towing capacity of 11 000 pounds though smaller than the r1t it is still very capable for an electric car this towing ability will allow you to tow a pretty heavy mobile home a boat or anything else with ease we don't yet know how much of a hit the battery will take pulling a load like this if you plan to do this regularly you should consider the model with the largest battery pack seven seater interior like the r1t the r1s boasts a beautifully designed cabin with contemporary styling fancy leather wood trim and two large displays one for infotainment and one for the driver's gauge display a 12 cubic foot front trunk a large rear cargo area a split tailgate and a spacious looking third row only adds to the utility of the r1s scarange ceo of rivian posted a short video showing the flat folding seats of the three-row suv with the seats folded it makes for an awesome car camping setup scarange who is six feet two inches was able to lie down comfortable when the two back seat rows were folded down the fold down gives you a flat floor for a bed when you go out camping making camping purpose suvs with fold flat second and third rows has long proven an engineering challenge for automakers but in theory the flat floor of a dedicated ev platform makes it easier infotainment connectivity and software the horizontally mounted infotainment system uses expandable tiles for individual features with the main options navigation media and climate controls available at all times at the bottom of the display instead of delving into sub-menus options slide out of the side of tiles to reduce the complexity of the system rivian hasn't released information on other infotainment features but we expect apple carplay android auto and an onboard wi-fi hotspot also built to be the most durable to give you the confidence to go further regardless of the terrain or temperature is their bms or their intelligent battery management system the system learns your behavior or driving patterns to optimize performance and storage it will help maximize the life and the range of the battery which is some pretty cool technology rivien also incorporated four different kinds of sensors that the vehicle will use to keep you protected and to provide you with some additional features these sensors include cameras lidar radar and ultrasonic sensors and gps the car will see the world through these sensors and will use them to provide full auto pilot features to the car in what rivien calls driver plus safety and driver assistance the 2021 r1s hasn't yet been crashed tested by the national highway traffic safety administration nhtsa or the insurance institute for highway safety iihs rivian says every model will be outfitted with hands-free driver assistance technology key safety features are likely to include standard automated emergency braking standard lane departure warning standard adaptive cruise control warranty and maintenance coverage it to offer revie policies in order to take on rivals such as audi and tesla pricing the launch edition will be the only r1s available at first along with an array of standard driver assists it features everything from the adventure model as well as an off-road package together they include an all-glass panoramic roof wi-fi capability for over-the-air updates and a 1000 lumen flashlight in the driver's door a powered tonneau cover an on-board air compressor and underbody protection in its most basic form the rivion r1s known as the r1s explore or with the explore package starts at seventy thousand dollars so there you have it the rivion r1s the world's first electric adventure family
