2021 Yamaha WR250F - First Ride

[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so adam booth upshift online i'm here with the 2021 yamaha wr 250f this is what yamaha considers their trail machine it's their strictly off-road bike here's the deal this bike is based pretty much 100 on the 250f motocross bike this is kind of a trend you're seeing across a lot of manufacturers so i'll have a 250 motocross bike of a 450 motocross bike and they're also offering like a cross country slash closed course off-road bike where they take it and they put an 18-inch rear wheel maybe a little softer suspension settings and they call it an x it's kind of happening amongst all the manufacturers well this is their trail bike and then instead of making a whole new bike this is even farther detuned than the 250 fx would be so the major changes are of course it's got the 18 inch rear wheel the motor is detuned a little bit through ecu exhaust is much more choked up than a stock open exhaust but that's of course so you can go trail riding without starting fires and disturbing the nature and wildlife so the other thing is it has a computer it's a computer you can adjust your mileage it has some settings for if you want to do enduros for your mileage up and down average speed and then it has a headlight and a tail light so overall this bike is so close to a motocross bike when you compare it to the way quote trail bikes used to be for manufacturers used to have you know yamaha honda and ktm would build these very specific trail bikes made that would suck on a motocross track they would start going fast well it's kind of the opposite now this bike is motocross at heart and can go off-road on the tighter trails generally what i find from this bike and riding it is it's still very aggressive it's still quick off the throttle you have to control it efi so it's pretty snappy so if you want to be on a real tight single track or you're negotiating some slippery terrain or rocks or roots that throttle's real on and off you turn your wrist a little bit it goes that's that's the benefit of efi and it's also the downfall of efi if you're used to carburetors those roll on really smooth so with this bike and technical stuff you want to cover the clutch as much as possible to feed the power out i struggled a little bit in the looser stuff and i was kind of on second gear and it was kind of pipey and i ended up going to third and forgetting the clutch and just rolling the motor on the efi doesn't let it die out and it's what you want to call jetting is super clean the mapping is clean all the way down to idle so i'm not saying this bike isn't good on single track or tight terrain it just takes a little more input than maybe a bike that's a little more designed for tight riding you have to cover the clutch cool thing is it has an electric fan to keep the motor from overheating that's a super big bonus on any motorcycle because once you start boiling over the radiator you can start causing engine damage and other issues and with the electric fan you know you're not going to overheat and you can still ride the tight stuff so as far as overall handling on this bike like i said it is based on the motocross bike it's also based on the fx 6-speed transmission which is really nice for a little more open a little more choice a little higher speed the suspension is detuned a little softer a little more plush it's still pretty uh pretty aggressive based over the small stuff it does okay and i actually found through the rock beds when i was picking at them slowly it was a little harsh but if i just relax and went faster the the kyb suspension really worked well i've always been a huge fan of the spring fork on the front the sss and they never went to air force yamaha stuck by their guns stayed with the spring fork and everything came full circle and people still love this so yamaha kind of was a pioneer of this reverse cylinder thing a while back and they really found that by having the air box above the engine they could get a straight shot into the engine and it really boosted the power on it the only weird thing about that is you do kind of hear the air box more than you would on the motocross or the fx because the exhaust is much quieter so when you're really cranking on it or you're getting on it hard you do hear the air box you hear the air box on the motocross bikes a little too not that big a deal it's just different so the wr250f is kind of good everywhere it's kind of this general bike that can go on the trails can go fast in the desert and go medium speed the suspension works on a lot of different surfaces but what this it has over other trail bikes bikes that are designed really like maybe a two-stroke for really technical riding is this bike will go to the motocross track because the heart of it is so motocross based that yeah you might be at the motocross track with a light and a tail light and a quiet muffler but the overall chassis balance kind of the feel of the engine it's so based on the motocross bike that you could have fun on it a lot of fun actually maybe change the exhaust and you'd be really good so speaking of changes some of the things that as any off-road bike should have is we would put in some durable kind of flag handguards or full wrap-arounds depending on the style of riding we're doing the grips they're okay but they are uh they can rip up your hands a little bit i'd go for a softer grip on that thing something a little more comfortable so for some people a reckless clutch might be what they're really looking for because if they can't manage that often on throttle or their hands get tired with the clutch covering the power delivery right off idle that kind of clutch could really smooth out the way they ride this and make it more enjoyable because it's got a headlight kind of has a tail light kind of looks like a dual sport there's a lot of states where there's people who are going to get away with slapping a license plate on the back and maybe some turn signals and this would make a really cool 250 dual sport it's aggressive enough to go fast it does the technical stuff with a little bit of clutch work but then man you could take it to the motocross track and be ripping around with the license plate on the back looking just like a motocross bike so overall the wr250f is a cool bike it's been a while since i really kind of rode 250s off-road or did any hill climbing or trying to go fast through the desert and 250f's have way more power than they did even five years ago so it's pretty cool that they're able to put that in a package like this and make it work so well everywhere kind of the general way manufacturers are going and it's kind of cool and it saves money hopefully that passes on to the consumer is they have a motocross bike and they're finding ways to tweak on that chassis and the improvements they're finding for motocross usually a year or two later for the model makes it into these off-road bikes like this bike the motocross version got all these updates about a year year and a half ago and then once that motorcross version comes out then they roll those changes into the wr so overall i mean if you're not a big dude and you want to ride everything the wr250f might be your option so that's the 2021 wr250f first impression this thing is going to be ridden a lot more by our staff we're going to change some stuff up this thing offers kind of some different options super off-road maybe dual sport maybe kind of beginner bike i don't know
