Such a nice interior on a polarizing exterior

What I find infuriating with BMW is that ever since the e46 era, they are incapable of getting the interior and exterior right together

E92 M3 and F80 M3 great exterior, average interior

G80 Interior, finally made a great interior, donkey shit exterior

I tried to stay away from any talk about styling, because I feel like as much as it seems awkward today in 5 years it will be normal. Other than adding AWD there is not much left to do to this car anymore. Making it faster wont make it any better. Its has a manual, good auto, good interior. Feel like thats it. They could add "feel" back but thats not why people buy these.

Man that interior is really something else, even for BMW, and I love it.

Too bad the front end is so controversial because every review has pointed out how great of a car this is.

The M3 looks pretty good. I wouldn't mind a black or dark grey one. M4 looks awful.

Aren't these selling quite well, despite what everyone says of the grill? Considering the massive chip shortage?

I'm curious if the internet hate really reflects the actual product sales performance.

This car is such a beast. I test drove it the other day and was blown away by the capabilities of the car. And the iDrive system is arguably the best infotainment in the industry.

[Music] oh i know you're excited for a bmw 2 for one just as much as i am we have the new g80 and g82 generation m4 competition with an automatic and the m3 sedan with a manual transmission we're going to drive it on the street we're going to talk about all the changes from the f80 generation if you can remember all these numbers and then jack's going to go absolute monkey mode on the track to talk about what this car is and what it isn't [Music] wow inside the new m3 and m4 honestly from a purely practical perspective these interiors are largely the same outside of course do you want a four-door or a two-door personally in my opinion i think this car is far as better suited as a four-door the m3 form factor because the joy of an m3 or an m4 is the fact that you can use it every single day and it's a do everything vehicle with a jekyll and hyde personality and the current generation 3 series fortunately or unfortunately as is as big as ever dimensionally it is the same size as the e39 m5 thereabouts which means you can fit four or five adults in this car the trunk in the m4 is basically the same size as the m3 the front seats forward in both cars are also identical the seats themselves are unique to the m3 and m4 the base seat is a leather seat that can be optionally cooled however they do not massage but you can get them to fit basically any body type if you are on the track they don't do the best job in holding you in this car however has the carbon buckets they are a very expensive option but i will say they are worth it if you plan on doing any real track driving they are still electronically adjustable they do still fit a wide variety of body types but once you make it over their carbon bolsters they are very comfortable not to mention the fact that they really do make this interior feel rather unique they look genuinely cool again this is a regular three or four series in here which means you have good cargo space in the doors idrive is still excellent to me at least it's the best infotainment found in a german luxury car outside of maybe porsche everything works the way it's supposed to there's a good mix of physical and touch controls and the idrive rotary knob works really really well not to mention the redundant touch controls that's up display works well and all of the m gimmicks including the m drift analyzer and all that other stuff seem to work well but overall this is a rather large downgrade at least in my opinion again styling is subjective when compared to the prior generation car i think that car had more presence and most importantly it did not have the giant buck teeth so with that said let's head into the shop welcome to the in the shop segment with the bmw m3 and m4 you're going to see footage of the g82 which is the coupe and the g80 which is the sedan this is a competition model with the torque converted automatic and our four-door or sedan is a manual so there's a good option there for you however underneath basically they are largely the same all the suspension components all that other fun stuff at least looks the same however there are some tuning differences so for this generation m3 and m4 it is as big as it has ever been in fact it's larger i believe it's like 1.6 inches wider and 4.5 inches longer so this is a much bigger car than it was in the past it's it's like the m5 it's just like an old m5 now everything's just gotten bigger everything's gotten bigger except me and uh what are the major talking points so this is sol on a variation of clar because this is based loosely on a three series which you get in the front is strut suspension and in the rear you get a multi-link the front subframe is aluminum where the rear subframe is steel they have done cross bracing throughout the car to increase its torsional rigidity if you notice in the engine bay as well you still have rigidity beams in the front however they are no longer carbon fiber they don't need to be i mean it looked cool but it was really just a beauty piece more than anything else the suspension control arms at least in the front on the strut suspension are all new they're still all aluminum you have a magneride damper now they are adjustable three ways the big changes in the front though is that they've gone to a break by wire systems you now have a programmable pedal you can go from comfort or sport brake feel wow i know it's to be honest you can't really tell and even on the track it leads to a pretty consistent pedal feel we did not get the brakes hot enough to fade them out or or to give us at least a brake temperature warning but honestly the pedal if you did not know their brake by wire it feels pretty decent what do you think almost every major manufacturer going forward is going to be doing this it's the future of it and it just depends again this is one more thing we're going to have to evaluate and look at is it transparent to the driver in normal conditions and then when you're driving it hard where you don't want to be distracted in this car there is no distraction from it you really can't tell so we're going to be talking about this a lot the more things become electronically controlled or every aspect of the electromechanical systems are have some type of software layer and those break that break by wire system is connected to two different brake options on this car the m4 competition you get optional carbon ceramics however the coupe the sedan we have is on the base steel brake however the steel brakes do have the m compound at least under our lapping conditions on autobahn south four or five laps they did not seem to fade out yeah i mean there's there there's an advantage to this there's a more immediate more firmer more confidence inspiring brake feel but to be honest if you're tracking this car which most people are not the steel out the steel rotors are gonna be way more affordable you can just scrap them be done with them whereas this is gonna be a small fortune or place probably well over twelve thousand dollars replacement for the set so they're very very expensive lastly before we go to the rear mark they've gone to a different eps unit it's just a adaptation to their m servotronic steering so it's basically a adaptive steering rack so it's supposed to lead to more front-end stability and be an easier car to drive day in and day out so let's head to the rear well i don't want to go in the back i want to look at this m-powered engine design jack so tell me a little bit how this is different from the f-80 generation m3 so this is an all-new engine mark this is from the x3m or x4m that we did earlier and this engine requires apparently this enormous front snout because it acts as the air intake for the cooling system and the intercoolers and the engine itself so what's interesting about this car before we talk about the engine specifically is all the cooling that goes into it has both a high and low temp system for the oil cooler radiator and intercoolers the low temp system uses a electronic pump where the high temp system uses a mechanical pump for the competition cars because they're automatic they get a separate transmission cooler however the non-competition cars do not and the difference between the automatics from previous generation to this is they went to a torque converted zf automatic and got rid of the dual clutch correct yes so we'll talk about that next before we talk about the engine so you have two different transmission options you get what is probably largely identical to something like the m5 you get a zf 8-speed automatic because this car later this year for the first time ever the m3 will have optional all-wheel drive and that will specifically only be on the competition models the manual car gets a revised 6-speed manual it does have red matching which you can turn off but the bell housing itself is revised for that transmission which drops 55 pounds the main reason why the manual transmission cannot be had with the competition is the torque output differences between the competition engine and the regular car so why would they go through revising the bell housing and shaving weight if they couldn't add the extra torque capacity to i have no idea and bmw didn't tell me so okay that just means they don't want to do it probably and i'm sure the take rate for the manual is going to be extraordinarily low but every enthusiast says a manual is better jack yeah we'll see and apparently bmw's doing a wagon as well in this body style which i'm sure so we'll sell five of them and people will be like oh why did they kill it so let's talk about this engine so it is the s-58 this is the all-new well not really only but all new to this car engine it is based loosely on the b-58 engine platform what makes this interesting is the engine construction itself so it's a forged crankshaft it has a 3d printed cylinder head it has all new turbos one for each bank and it has a integrated oil sump in the competition spec cars it makes 510 horsepower and that is wildly underrated according to basically any dyno this car is making that almost at the wheels and in the regular spec it makes things like 470 or 480 horsepower but the big difference between the two cars again is torque the regular m3 gets 405 foot pounds of torque and this is 479 and that is very very noticeable and one of the things that's worth bringing up is the way the torque hits now so in the prior cars the torque came in around 2000 rpm this comes in around 3 000 which makes a big difference on corner and corner exit and this has a 10 way adjustable traction control was not found on the prior generation and that's just that controls all the electronic systems in terms of braking and the differential yes okay yeah this car when you drive it which makes me basically pitch a tent definitely has that waft of hellcat right you kind of you kind of smell them the way it doesn't put down power of course the starbucks green paint job is perfect for you and your latte addiction well mark this is uh this car with its big sniffer can smell it all the bullion yeah well now speaking of that i think we've talked more than enough about this and we'll do another video in the future when they get the all-wheel drive version hopefully we have a little bit more technical information let's head out to the street and check out the manual transmission regular m3 first all right [Music] oh boy mark we're in the g80 m3 for a street drive on our favorite farm road genesis yeah genesis mark no this is the m3 mark the true driver's choice and look at this we have a manual [Music] i have you back in the car i'm going to show you why this is a rewarding experience i have a manual rear wheel driving almost 500 horsepower in a street car [Music] well i know that fake engine noise sounds real i was hoping you weren't gonna dump the clutch at 7000 rpms dude [Music] that's proper that's real proper i i 100 agree with you aside from the shitty engine fake engine noise that's coming through the speakers yeah that's not so good it's a does a really good job hooking up you know it's for how tail happy this car is you would think that would be you'd get no traction off the line and it does a good job even at a higher rpm dump yeah it's surprisingly a decent street car i'm gonna go go through this very quick because we're about to do three other drives in both the m4 and then we're gonna take both on the track the car rides well it's fairly quiet though you have a problem with how it puts down power when it's not under load i'll go into that in a minute and i'll go more into that in the track drive as well but honestly man if you are just going to drive this on the street which i feel like most people are going to does a good job this fixes a lot of the problems from the prior generation m3 it's even more usable it's a bigger car which is both a pro and a con depending on who you are it seems to ride way better it seems to be a quieter cabin and everything works really really well my only small complaint that i have with this car is despite this being the manual i don't think it's geared particularly well if you're going to do a lot of highway driving when you're in sixth gear doing between let's say 85 and 90 miles an hour you're turning well over 3000 rpm which yeah that's a little strange for like a street from the streetcar perspective yeah if you're doing a lot of highway driving i can see how that could get annoying but past that i mean this is kind of what you're expecting it's but you could alleviate that with just going to the automatic gearbox yeah if you were really concerned about that and that's not a problem the audit but past that mark i think now is a very good time to take this out to audubon country club so we can get some real speed sounds good jack [Applause] [Music] all right jack we're in the regular m3 sedan with the manual trans so i have to take back some of the things that i complained about driving this car on the street on the street it seems like much of my problem was you know you can't really put power down you're always having to breathe on the throttle but when you get out here in more progressive corners this thing is just unbelievable how fast it is yeah i uh this car's got a really good jekyll and hyde personality on the street it's kind of all over the place and the way i like it you want to go sideways all the time you want to be an you can fulfill the full bmw stereotype and out here on the track it's a lot more i'm trying to think the right word for it well-behaved yeah it is i think part of it maybe is is once you load up the suspension a bit and you get this kind of more progressively where you're not using a lot of steering angle and you're being a lot more careful the throttle and the steering match up more positively to the point where i'm like okay i'm just gonna keep a steady state turn here through this whole corner i don't have to mine the throttle as much and granted i completely screw up that corner but i don't feel like i'm constantly having to to be so careful here like i do on the street and part of that for me gives me a lot more confidence to drive this and then when you're really in the groove this thing is it's really well set up it's so balanced there's still enough suspension compression and travel uh it's it's not hopping over the corners it's not pogoing it just feels like it sets up and grips and even when you make a mistake with everything off it's really forgiving and neutral to slide and all of that do you notice a big difference in the sheer speed between the two cars the torque is very noticeable it's very noticeable the other car pulls a lot harder out of a corner whereas this is it feels more i'm not i know this is really stupid but it feels more naturally aspirated it feels more progressive the way that it builds power out of a corner so i think that's partly why it's a little bit easier to drive fast but the other car feels phenomenally quicker there's a there's a huge wow factor to the competition over this so with that mark i guess you've driven both how do you feel about the gearbox compared would you would you take the manual well would you take this out i would take the manual i think the the other car is geared better for all conditions but there's a lot more engagement here this is not a race car you're not competing in a car like this so you still get the enjoyment of a decent manual transmission you feel like you're more engaged driving this and that's part of the fun of this car to me as a sedan as a daily driver and then you come out here and you can still work on the craft of driving versus just you know letting the car do everything for you um what are the negatives then before we hop into the m4 comp and go flying in that car uh i don't know i think some of the negatives are it might be a little bit too soft for some people even in the sport plus setting i think uh i don't know dude honestly they've refined the hell out of this car but they still haven't stripped every single piece of it out it's still really fun to drive and other than like maybe the m2 to me at least mark this has to be the best modern bmw we've driven in a long time yeah it still feels big i mean it feels like a big car you know there's not a lot of feedback through the front end of the wheel but i mean basically what your hands if you if you pay attention to what my hands are doing the smoothness of the inputs match up to the way that the throttle is the brakes are everything's really well balanced even though you don't feel a ton physically through your body but you know this is it's m car stuff you know these the perception of what these cars are versus the reality are two different things and the main thing is people are going to be driving this on the street 99 or 95 of the time so i've enjoyed this car jack let's check out the competition see how that does all right so mark we're now in a c session in the m4 competition you've driven the m3 on track now we're going to keep this a little short because you've done a pretty good job breaking down what that car is like to drive the very first thing i'm gonna talk about is how much more torque this car seems to have it upsets the car a little bit but the exit speed you get in this vehicle is serious this is a very fast car we're doing about seven tenths probably we're not hustling at that much and the kind of back uh speeds you're seeing on the straights or sorry the speeds you're seeing in the back straights in this car you're only like five maybe 10 miles an hour off the 911 turbo west we drove i mean it is nowhere as fast as that car but say from 100 to maybe 130 this thing has real speed behind this vehicle the car also has really good body control it feels a little tighter than the sedan even though they basically weigh the same does a good job managing this car's weight the steering though being entirely dead is very very direct and these carpet ceramic brakes on this car which i don't know if i would pay for are very strong as well i yeah you know i think the big thing jack is i kind of complained how this car just feels like it always wants to get away from you on the street and it makes it a little bit more it makes it a little less fun to drive because you know you can't really keep that power down but out here this is so impressive it really is i mean how fast this car is for what it is you know we talk about m cars being kind of like faux motorsports to me this kind of takes back some of that and when you go out here and how how crazy fast you can take this thing i mean this is this is serious this is on another level it really is on another level and then you take this back out in the street and daily drive it that's amazing one thing i did do is i turned off the exhaust mode that's tied to fake engine noise because it's so belligerently annoying so i'm gonna turn it on i'm gonna turn it on when you start driving here all right [Music] i hope you have the casio keyboard oh my god dude it's just so obnoxious so at least you can turn it off with one touch but you also kill the exhaust tone so mark i guess with all that's been said in this video i do think it's a good time to get into the final thoughts agree jack let's do it [Music] final thoughts on the all-new bmw m3 and m4 and before i get into that i want to say special thanks to autobahn country club in joliet illinois they are a member race track where if you join you can take your race car any day of the week and pound it all day long however if you are not a member and you want to make sure your teen is a safer driver they do have a teen driving school there where they use bmw vehicles provided by bmw usa and their local instructors to make sure your kid is safe behind the wheel so with that said let's talk about the m3 and m4 if you can get past the looks which are extremely polarizing it's a pretty great car objectively in almost every fashion it is better than the m3 and m4 it replaces there are some negatives though the first is it's not necessarily the most exciting vehicle in the world does not sound the greatest and you could argue it's a little bit sterile to drive the car itself if you are not the most competent driver as well has a tendency to go sideways i love that about this car but again it could be a problem for you it's pros are it's unbelievably capable it's as practical as it's ever been in nearly every possible way mechanically it's been improved versus the uh the older vehicle so with that said thanks for watching and i hope to see you soon [Music] you
