to our official party other distinguished guests our distinguished donors ladies gentlemen and last but not least our amazing awardees from the class of 2020 good evening I am lieutenant yzma colonel Jennifer Hicks McGowan they used emoji one it is my distinct pleasure to introduce to some and present to others the leader of the world's pre-eminent leader development institution and the world the 60th superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point the one the only Lieutenant General Darryl a Williams [Applause] let's go let's go alright alright alright alright are we gonna electron laying out there - alright and before I start I just want to say thank you to the class of 2020 give yourself a round of applause Oh [Applause] tomorrow night we'll be back in here I just want to for the sergeant major myself the Commandant the Dean athletic director thank you for coming back and showing the world what discipline looks like I'm really proud of you all a lot of people were like you know I'm like I got him this is my class this class of 2020 and in less than 48 hours you're all gonna throw your hats up in the air and get out of this place what do you think about that [Applause] I'll miss you now we will miss you so let me get them into the formal remarks here so I know we got folks out there watching distinguished award donors staff and faculty ladies and gentlemen and members of the class of 2020 good evening thank you all for being here as we recognize these newly minted second lieutenants and soon-to-be graduates for their exceptional achievement here at West Point winning matters I think you're going to hear that tomorrow night from the chief of staff in the army but equally important excellence matters and at West Point we're all about winning doing the right things the right way and we're all about continually pursuing excellence and all we do but it's not enough to say that winning and excellence matters it's important that we celebrate it even in challenging times such as these and that's why we're here tonight to celebrate winning and celebrate the continual excellence these outstanding young men and women have demonstrated throughout their four years at the United States Military Academy firsts I'd like to thank our distinguished award owners watching this event for your generosity and support that makes this ceremony possible even though you're not here physically we're honored to have you with us virtually and we know you're with us here in spirit tonight your foresight and generosity have a tremendous impact on this academy and indeed our army many of you have supported these awards programs for decades and many of these awards are named in memory of your family and loved ones exemplars of excellence themselves as these newly minted officers accept these awards tonight they do so in the honor of their namesakes and their legacy of excellence again thank you all for your incredible support would everyone join me in a round of applause to show our appreciation for our donors to all the families friends and staff and faculty joining us virtually thank you I know you're feeling very proud of your our awardees they are exceptional young men and women extremely talented and motivated the best of the best they've achieved a lot of amazing things here but they couldn't have done it without your support and I know we're all confident they're gonna achieve great things for our great army so our awardees congratulations and well done in less than 48 hours you will receive your diplomas as your West Point journey comes to an end and you prepare to head out as the newest leaders of character in the United States Army preparing to live honorably lead honorably and demonstrating excellence over the last forty eight months you have distinguished yourselves and excelled in a program that demands continual excellence all day every day you have demonstrated excellence in the classroom in the military program on the fields of friendly strife and excellence in character and tonight we are here to celebrate excellence and recognize you for outstanding performance class of 2020 you have truly led the way during your time here and inspire those who will follow in your footsteps however as you leave here don't rest on your laurels excellence and learning our continual pursuits be confident but be eager to learn and to grow in the wise words of my battle buddy command Sarge AK love attitude effort and discipline all the way again the Brigadier General Elvan our Heiberg memorial award established in 1969 a silver tray is awarded for the highest composite standing in Applied Science and Engineering the donor is mr.
