master of ceremonies it is an honor to welcome you to west point and the 2021 awards convocation and superintendent's awards for excellence and achievement and distinguished cadet awards ceremony we would also like to welcome all of those who are joining us virtually we appreciate you joining us this evening traditionally this stage would be full of generous donors who would present these awards themselves however due to current health protection guidelines we were unable to invite them here in person the superintendent and the board of directors will present the awards on their behalf ladies ask a blessing on this evening oh my god we are thankful for the opportunity to continue to celebrate to celebrate the excellence that we see all around us here at west point or the ancient text tells us if you see someone who excels in their work that person will stand before kings that person will not be unknown lord tonight we are honoring those who have excelled and we look forward to those days ahead as they are known lord bless them in their work their service as they take the lessons they have learned here and share them and lead others here in our nation we ask this blessing in your superintendent's character integration advisory group and mr mike buddy the director of intercollegiate athletics would everyone please join me in a round of applause in recognition of our official party [Applause] ladies and gentlemen at this time lieutenant general darrell a williams the 60th superintendent of the united states military academy will now give his opening remarks distinguished award donors staff and faculty ladies and gentlemen and members of the class of 2021 good evening thank you all for being here as we recognize the soon to be graduates for their exceptional achievement here at west point over the past 47 months these exceptional young men and women have undergone one of the most rigorous and challenging leader development experiences there is and that experience comes to an end in less than 48 hours from now as they graduate and assume the mantle of leadership in the united states army as new second lieutenants and leaders of character where they'll build and lead cohesive teams that will fight and win in the crucible to ground combat and who will be expected to live honorably lead honorably and demonstrate excellence in all they do we're here tonight to take a moment to celebrate excellence specifically the excellence these cadets have demonstrated throughout their four years at west point in every aspect of their developmental experience academic military physical and most importantly character first i'd like to thank our distinguished award donors watching this event for your generosity and support that makes this ceremony possible even though you're not here physically we're honored to have you with us virtually and we know you're with us here in spirit tonight many of you have supported this awards program for decades and many of these awards are named in memory of your family and loved ones exemplars of excellence themselves as these cadets accept these awards tonight they do so in honor of their namesakes and their legacy of excellence we all are extremely grateful to for grateful to you for your generosity which has had a tremendous impact on this academy and the united states army thank you for your incredible support would everyone join me in a round of applause to show our appreciation for our award donors to all the families friends staff and faculty joining us virtually thank you i know you're feeling very proud of your awardees they're exceptional young men and women extremely talented motivated and inspiring the best of the best they've achieved a lot of amazing things here but they couldn't have done it without your support and we're all confident they're going to leave here and achieve great things for our army and our nation to our awardees congratulations and well done over the last 47 months you have distinguished yourselves and excelled in a program that demands continual excellence all day every day you have demonstrated excellence in the classroom in the military program on the fields of friendly strife and excellence in character and tonight it's an honor for us to celebrate that excellence with you and recognize you for your outstanding performance recognizes cadets who have during their 47 months at the academy demonstrated exceptional achievement in leadership military development academics and athletics these cadets are representative of the values character resiliency and abilities that the class of 2021 brings to our army and to our nation our first cadet awardee will receive nine distinguished donor awards starting with the general robert e wood distinguished cadet award established in 1968. a silver tray is awarded to the cadet with the highest class standing this year's winner is cadet justin m gitemeyer next is the uruguayan army award established in 2004 cadet gitmeyer is awarded a medal and certificate for achieving the highest class standing our donor is uruguayan army next is the peruvian army award established in 1964. cadet guitemire is awarded a medal with a certificate for achieving the highest class standing our donor is the peruvian army the major general francis vinton green memorial award established in 1929 cadet guitemire is receiving a silver tray for achieving the highest class standing donor mrs francis vinton greene now being presented to cadet guitar is the brigadier general john r generon memorial award established in 1999. a silver tray is awarded for achieving the highest class standing in academics donor mr jack m generon [Applause] cadet guitemeyer is also receiving the brigadier general gerald a counts memorial award established in 1966 a silver tray is awarded for the highest rating in physics donor miss anne miner daughter of brigadier general counts and now cadet guitar is receiving the colonel herbert bainbridge haydn memorial award established in 1971 a silver tray is awarded to the cadet achieving the highest standing in the basic sciences the national ladies auxiliary jewish war veterans of the united states of america award established in 1963 a silver tray is awarded to cadet guitar for achieving the highest rating in humanities donor miss sharon williams and finally cadet guitar is receiving the sewell top and tinge memorial award established in 1979 a silver tray is awarded for the highest rating in nuclear engineering congratulations cadet get to meyer [Applause] the next cadet awardee will receive three awards the class of 1999 award established in 1962 is a silver tray awarded to the cadet officer commanding the fourth regiment this year's recipient is cadet mark h jescott donor class of 1999. [Applause] the colonel theodore s westchoozy memorial award established in 1970. a silver tray is awarded to cadet jascott for earning the third highest class standing the donor mr thaddeus west choosing and cadet jascott will receive the national organization american legion award established in 1935. a silver pitcher is awarded for outstanding achievement in chemistry donor american legion national headquarters congratulations cadet jascott [Applause] our next cadet awardee will also receive three awards the first of these awards is the lieutenant colonel len m hanniwal memorial award established in 1971 a silver tray is awarded to the deputy brigade commander of the united states corps of cadets this year's recipient is cadet tyrese d bender our donor mrs gloria h cantwell the brigadier general winfield s scott memorial award established in 1983 a silver pitcher is awarded to cadet bender for excellence in engineering management the donor major general retired bruce k scott cadet bender is also receiving the army athletic association special award he is receiving a silver tray awarded for exhibiting outstanding leadership in athletic competition our donor army athletic association congratulations cadet bender [Applause] our next awardee is another triple winner the deborah mackey mcdaniel award established in 1993 a silver tray is awarded to the most valuable player on the women's soccer team this year's winner is cadet sydney a casalia the donor lieutenant colonel retired robert m mcdonnell [Applause] cadet casalia is also receiving the women's army athletic association trophy established in 1980. it is awarded to the cadet who contributed the most valuable service to athletics during her cadet career the donor is the army athletic association [Applause] cadet casalia is also receiving the west point chapter daughters of the united states army award established in 1982 a silver tray awarded for excellence in women's physical development over the course of four years donor west point chapter daughters of the united states army congratulations cadet casalia [Applause] our next awardee will receive two awards presenting the first lieutenant david r bernstein memorial award established in 2003 a silver tray is awarded to the cadet for achieving the fifth highest class standing this year's award recipient is cadet marie e dawkin donor mr and mrs richard bernstein we will now present to cadet dawkin the military and security society award established in 1970. a plaque is awarded for excellence in operations research the donor professor patrick driscoll [Applause] our next awardee is also receiving two awards the men's army athletic association trophy established in 1904 a silver tray is awarded to the cadet who contributed the most valuable service to athletics during his cadet career this year's award goes to cadet anthony l giachen donor army athletic association now presenting the colonel russell p red reader junior award established in 1965 a silver tray is awarded to cadet giachen for being the outstanding player on the baseball team the most outstanding player on the baseball team the donor mrs dale e ruby congratulations cadet g option our next awardee is also a double winner presenting the colonel bainbridge reynolds haydn family memorial award established in 1973. a silver tray is awarded for achieving the highest standing in history courses this year's winner is timothy j rudolph [Applause] cadet rudolph is also receiving the thompson family memorial award established in 1973. a mounted cadet saber is awarded to the graduating cadet most distinguished in writing across the curriculum our next awardee is another double winner the brigadier general alvin r heiberg memorial award established in 1969 a silver tray is awarded for the highest composite standing in applied science and engineering this year's winner is cadet nathan a bata donor mr elvin r heiberg iv additionally cadet bata is receiving the suzanne and walter scott jr award established in 2015. a mountain cadet saber is awarded for the highest degree of excellence in mechanical engineering our donor mr walter scott jr congratulations cadet bata again for a cadet who has earned two awards the general douglas macarthur memorial award established in 1952 a silver tray is awarded to the cadet officer commanding the first regiment cadet tyler m sheckleton our donor vfw post 2362 cadet shackleton is also receiving the knox trophy established in 1910 a silver bull awarded for achieving the highest class standing in the military program donor sons of the revolution in the state of new york congratulations cadet sheckleton and our final double winner of the night has earned the olmstead foundation award established in 1970 a silver tray is awarded to the cadet with the second highest overall class standing this year's award goes to cadet riley m mcinnis donor major general retired bruce k scott [Applause] cadet mcginnis is also receiving the pershing sword award established in 1929. it is given in recognition of service as the first captain and brigade commander donor mrs cadet sabre is awarded for excellence in leadership and management studies this year's award goes to cadet cadet anujin gunwalk the donor military order of foreign wars the national society colonial dame 17th century award established in 1982 a silver bull is awarded for excellence in systems engineering this year's award goes to cadet rebecca a morel donor the national society colonial dames of the 17th century the national society colonial daughters of the 17th century award established in 1934 a silver tray is awarded for excellence in art philosophy and literature this year's award goes to cadet langdon r agbern our donor is the national society colonial daughters of the 17th century the order of the founders and patriots of america award established in 1992 a united states army officers saber model 1902 is awarded for excellence in environmental engineering this year's winner is samuel j houseman donor order of the foundation and patriots of america now being presented to cadet william j neville's is the society of the cincinnati in the state of virginia award established in 1970 a gold medal and a copy of the book the virginia cincinnati 1781-2011 is awarded to the first class member of the cadet honor committee with the highest class standing donor is a trustee for the society of the cincinnati [Applause] the ulysses s grant memorial award established in 1932 a silver tray is awarded for excellence in computer science this year's winner is cadet jacob m scriffany donor national women's relief corps auxiliary to the grand army of the republic incorporated military and physical it is awarded annually based on the cadet award score which is a combination of the three program scores with equal weight applied to each there are two levels of recognition excellence and achievement the top five percent of each class earns the award for excellence which is a gold star encircled by a wreath the superintendent's award for achievement is awarded annually to the top 15 percent of each class the award is a gold wreath the distinguished cadet award reflects achievement of a term quality point average of 3.67 or higher for the past year or cumulatively
