right now Madison Wisconsin is the home of fitness [Applause] this event is all about how fast can you go rivers of Matt Fraser being humans have been greatly exaggerated there is nothing fancy about this it is just pure work and it's gonna hurt to carry that let's weigh on your tailor you must have a steel core somebody until these woman she's our wookie Madison Wisconsin it has become an annual destination for the fittest men in the world just a few miles away from the state capital building will endure the most complete most challenging and most grueling test of fitness ever devised the prospect games [Music] culmination of a three-part season more than 200,000 men began the journey to get to Madison the world wide open narrowed the field to 360 nine regional competitions around the globe yielded the final 39 fielding from the elite the CrossFit Games do not showcase athletes they test them the men will face a total of 14 events and the toughest date game's history opens the competition or events over to pass the test to be good at everything they have never done before flag is right Irian by Chris luckily some professional riders were on hand earlier in the week to show the athletes how it's done the fourth corner is a little little Trixie but I think I think the herd will spread out more than I initially thought following their lesson the men got some time to practice a time trial determined the starting grid the day before the event invent one the men will compete in a criterium race around the Alliant Energy Center the fastest man to complete ten laps around the 1200 meter circuit wins the event all 39 athletes will be on the force at the same time this right here was the lunchroom run last year the criterium race is going to be along this course you guys are going to use ten laps or turn welcome to the cross to get done a lot of work to do and I think this morning's gonna be a little more fun cycle something a little different people are excited to go do it and try not to crash they want to cross the games and that's the bottom line people are a little less friendly I would have printed like sudhir Owens but I take the ten gonna be a different race I think little bit different tactics but 12k still like going hard and try to hold on for like the whole ten rounds the bikes are ready the athletes have been breathed it's time to ride this the final stop on the road to the fittest Madison Wisconsin and the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games thanks for joining us everybody I'm Sean woodland alongside bill Butler for the opening event of the competition a 10 lap criterium race around the Alliant Energy Center and we're going to find out really quickly who can adapt to an event most of these athletes have never done before you know there's just no limit anymore when you talk about the CrossFit Games and what kind of tests are gonna be thrown at these guys but yesterday there was a single lap Time Trial that set the positioning for today and if you're look at your leaders up at the top we have Adrian moon velar he had the fastest time overall which is what is expected with his past cycling experience number two position is Rasmus Anderson in the blue tank and then Matt Fraser in the pink jersey came in third overall no shock Fraser is out front the guy can pretty much do everything the last two years he has won the CrossFit Games by record margins in fact he's had the title locked up before we even started the final event director of the games Dave Castro on the yellow bike wearing the black shirt he will lead the 39 men out as we get off to a rolling start athletes starting to build up speed as they approach the beginning here at the opening event of the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games the critérium 10 laps around a 1200 meter course and we are underway as Matt Fraser and Rasmus Anderson take the early lead in the opening part here of the first lap it looked like Matt hopped right up to his legs to get some good driving power to get himself out into the front that is its strategy to put yourself out in the front so you don't have so many people to deal with however in cycling we talked about drafting and you know and being in the lead doesn't guarantee you the win all that doesn't mean that you're setting the pace for everyone you get everyone else to kind of hang out back there and that's gonna be a nice position to sit in you were out here on the course yesterday you got to watch these athletes go through their qualifying laps what do you think the keys are now as they actually find themselves in a race setting well I think the first thing these guys really have to do is be comfortable with their equipment they have to understand those clips and be comfortable being locked in and not have the fear of falling feel comfortable on that bike and these bikes are light if they if they don't have any kind of a high-tech piece of equipment like this but mostly it's gonna be efficiency efficiency in your turn meaning you come out wide so you can come in nice and tight no windbreak check your speed before the turn in the gearing is gonna be hugely important you wouldn't be able to have a lot of power coming out of the turn and not spinning your wheels going too fast or wasting a lot of energy going nice and slow on those drives Rasmus Anderson in the blue will be a popular man to draft behind cuz he's 215 pounds and now Matt Fraser has moved himself into the lead ahead of Anderson the Anderson will get a chance to do some drafting off the two-time defending champion as we close out the first of ten laps here in the opening event now this is the weird thing with Matt we know that he's a competitor he likes to he doesn't like to sit back and wait that's not really his style he wants to get out there in front but in this sort of event it's really not gonna play to his favor to do that so yes he's out in the front the only thing I can think is that he's trying to rabbit everyone to push harder than they want to Oh Patrick Felder has dropped a chain the felder had a bad start to the games last year was able to work himself up the leaderboard after the opening event get yourself a new bike he is back on but velder wound up on the podium he finished in third place overall pretty bad finish to start the games he was 36 last year after the opening event and after that mishap you might be looking at the same sort of start here in 2018 yeah that's not what he wants no I mean it just a mental thing at this point to start off and a hole that deep Patrick Felder does have nine laps to make up the ground he lost Matt Fraser is your leader early on we'll be back with more coverage of event number one of the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games the critérium back at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison Wisconsin event one of the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games the critérium rolling on we are closing out lap seven of ten and we have a change at the front of the pack both Adrienne Googler in the black and Federer to Guinea's in the pink have moved into the lead while we are away bill Olson running into some problems as his right pedal breaks and he would have to stop and get a new bike and lose even more time just trying to knock that thing off his shoe an insanely tough break for Noah it just seems like every year there's a big mishap or mistake or something that keeps him from getting onto the podium good news for him this is the first event we got a lot of the games left to go Rasmus Anderson has moved out front Frederick the giddy as a second followed by Lucas Holberg and Matt Fraser and that's looking like they will be content to draft off Anderson for now so no one wanted to move up no one wants to take the workload here because I want to have that rest before they go into the final lap so their forest here Rasmus out into the front you saw him try to wave some people up and it didn't happen so here all said now it's like okay we might start to see a breakdown of those alliances if they work for who's gonna start to make a move they're all lined up see Matt Fraser trying to make a break but again Matt looks like he's working on he's working solo on this hole on this whole race versus all the Europeans that are all pasty trying to work together as much as possible that's Pablo child food who was in the back and in danger of getting lapped he is the first Brazilian man to represent his country here's an individual to cross at games and now that lead pack starting to jockey for position as we are no longer single file behind Rasmus Anderson Adrian goon Willer has moved to the outside and is making a break and wound viler has moved himself into the lead as we close out lap 9 of 10 and now Adrian Miller is really starting to pull away adrian has been so technically impressive so far in this race look at the way he handled that turn now the question is did he make his move at the right time wound viler has now left Marquand jones and adrian Boonville ER is way out in front of the pack here and this is the biggest lead we have seen as we are now in lap number 9 two laps remain here in the opening event of the 2018 Reebok cross at games of criterium and Adrian moon Baylor is all by himself Josh bridges is gaining ground he is now in third James Newberry out of Australia is the man in the blue shirt behind moon Bellary Newberry was able to make a move at the end of lap eight so now we gotta see if he's just gonna be content to draft on the adrian he can serve some of that energy you can see him getting tight up on that tire as they get into this turn and look at the effect of that draft he's not even having to pedal conserving that energy has he made that push from the pack up to the leader here with Adrian now James Newbury looking like he is gonna make a move on Adrienne moon Miller and Newberry has moved into the lead and the two of them working together to get way ahead of that pack this is a look at how far ahead the two of them are his AR dollars a little more than halfway through the second to last lap now James Newberry in the blue shirt has yet to have the type of performance we expect to see from him here at the CrossFit Games now this is his third appearance and he's never finished better than 24th overall he did win the Pacific Regional to get here to Madison and I really expect him to challenge for a spot in the top ten this year Cody Anderson Patrick Felder Scott panchik and Brandon Luckett are in danger of getting laps James Newberry number 26 light blue top he is your leader behind him is Adrienne moon viler and we are closing out the second to last lap fact that James came up there caught him and now he has somewhat of pace office so again we've seen this separation from the rest of the pack these guys are gonna have to kind of fight the Penske fighting for third Adrian just gonna hang out nice and tight and now let's see what happens to the lead both of these men looking to win the first event of their careers here at the CrossFit Games the Newberry trying to make up for what was a disappointing performance for him here in 2017 when he finished 26th overall and now moon Miller and Newberry have to deal with the men who are lagging behind here and this is where it's good to get very technical those guys that are getting lapped they need to get out of the way the guys that are approaching them happy very smart they have to use their communication and let them know where they're coming and whether on the right or the left but for Newberry now he's in the lead and has an opportunity to draft a totally but this is the thing and we've seen how hard Adrian can push we've seen the drive so he's gonna look to make a breakaway on one of those currents but he's looking to see exactly where James is every single time you see him looking back a lot Adrian moon Villa is your leader followed closely by James Newberry they just passed Brandon Luckett who is finishing up lap number nine but these are your two leaders Adrian moon viler who had the top qualifying time leads James Newberry into the home stretch James Newberry's Pryor best finished 5th place and run swim run last year now Newberry trying to push moon Miller for the lead now the next turn is hairpin so efficiency is gonna be key we're looking for a wide entry checking the speed right before they get into that turn and then a powerful drive out with their legs as they come out of that turn moon Villard is through safely as is James Newberry and now it looks like Adrian moon filler on the final stretch is going to lock up his first career win at the CrossFit Games landed hundred points consistency is key at the CrossFit Games finishes in the top 10 keep you in contention finishes the lower than that puts you in an early hole Noah ohlsen came to Madison looking to make the podium for the first time in his bid appearance at the games he takes 30th in you bet one after breaking a pedal it felt like my shoe kept unclipping and then the whole thing started wobbling and I think I'm like that fifth lap I was going and the pedal just came on his boss like out of the thing Pat Bellmer fares even worse he had to get a replacement bike after a collision with another rider caused him to drop his change bail nur finishes 35th the derailleur came off my bike I had to run out with change out for a new bike yeah you're running him back again dude wish a lot of time Adrian Munda pillar picks up his first career event win at the CrossFit Games it starts out atop the overall leader for Sweden's Lucas Oberg starts out with a third place finish and two-time defending fittest man on earth Matt Fraser takes for the fans are looking forward to the next event when athletes are still looking back at the first one we thought if we teamed up we get break away from the old pack like we were communicating like if someone was on the inside outside on turn but and then just flat nine I think the guys that were good cyclist they they just put the pedal down and they just finished way ahead some pipes speeding a field drop down a bit and then I realized okay it's going to just I'm gonna break off around 7 or 8 and I know I knew my capacity and you I can hold that for like three rounds the first test is over a much different challenge awaits coming up after the break Noah Wilson opens up the early lead Knowlton is the count rah ability Matt Fraser fails a rep that might open the door for Cole's Arabic razor trying to minimize his rest the CrossFit Games are more than a competition they are an annual celebration of fitness the fittest spectators on earth take time to enjoy good company and all of things fit there was no time for any of that for the 39 men competing at the CrossFit Games the second test of day one was quickly approaching a classic CrossFit workout 30 muscle ups for time there is a strategy I don't think it would be smart to go for your max SEC but I think there's gonna be a couple of people who try try to hit very unbroken I mean it's a good one for me I guess but thirty foot straps or whatever they are it's going to be a little different so it's got to be smart I think everybody I'll have a little bit of a game plan coming in but we'll see who sticks to it watching someone else do muscle ups faster than me isn't gonna help me at all like if I try to eat up and go and get off my cadence then I'm gonna be out of my comfort zone so just trying to control what I can control can't worry too much about everyone else um I'll do my best but I mean it's like I'm not gonna win this event so just got to go out and execute my strategy get no no reps and hopefully sneak up on a few guys that are you know pushing the limit and I'm seeing smart known as a benchmark 30 muscle ups for time as a test often repeated in CrossFit gyms around the world as athletes measure their progress in event to the athletes perform all 30 repetitions as quickly as they can before crossing the finish line there are two heats logan collins put up the time to beat in heat number one [Music] and sneaking out the win at 1:46 ready for the final heat of a bed 2:30 muscle ups 20 athletes on the field Noah ohlsen at a tough break in event number one but he has a really good opportunity to make up some ground here now normals and has the ability to do all three of these reps unbroken but the question is will he I'm inspecting to see him break at least one time and he needs to be very smart about that for him to do well in this event Matt Fraser off to a great start fourth place overall after event number one and we know we're gonna see something big from him as well second define team of event number two is we are just about halfway through the opening day of the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games four events on this Wednesday as Noah Wilson opens up the early lead Craig Kenny he's up there as well the leaders name will be highlighted in a blue box at the top of your screen the number of reps that man has completed will be in the white box all the men with their names in the red box the number will either indicate a pair tied with the leader or how many reps they are trailing by gymnastic crowds if you look at Alan Smith on the left-hand side the blue shorts very controlled very tight not a lot of wasted energy no Bolton get his kettle raw ability watch his legs are all over the place big heavy swing drop this up down now he's gonna feel that in his hands so he's gonna be careful to decide where he's gonna break up I've seen them before though 18 and 12 we're gonna see if he's gonna do the same thing here Josh bridges in the light blue shorts on the right near screen right next to Noah ohlsen is right now in the lead with a team mound 19 repetitions down Adrienne mood will er who is wearing that white leader's jersey after he captured his first event win of his career in the criteria is on the lead pace without falling off as he is taking a break and Lucas Holbrook a Matt Fraser fighting for first place Fraser were back up on the Rings after a break at as Lucas Hobart and Cole Sager Patrick valor in the lead Felner on the left ear screen taken to break his bat Fraser is back to work Cole Sager low this through 26 reps and Counting the time to beat 146 flat belongs to Logan Collins did that in the first heat Scott panchik up and over nearest to the camera and the white side Matt Fraser won't win the event Matt Fraser fails a rep that might open the door for goal singer of a Fraser he's trying to minimize his rest he has one room to go [Applause] even with failed rats a guy can't be beat Fraser wins the heat but finishes behind Logan Collins and Cody Anderson to take third in the event pad Bell nurse shakes off his disappointing finishing event one to take ninth place no Olson has two spots behind him in 11 brett zekowski finishes 7 seconds later it takes 13 his hope works 12 place finish keep spinning third overall and Adrian wood filler hangs on to the overall lead Matt brazier ties Mun filler in points but when fillers win in the opening event gives him the tiebreak coal centers fifth place it invent - puts him in the top five two different tests have yielded two very similar results for Noah ohlsen mistakes continue to hurt him no rats man good we're not good enough I knew the probability of me falling off the range was pretty strong but you just all right like it's not a far fall so it's a worst-case scenario I just get back up and do my rep so I might as well give it a try there is a little time to rest and recover the men quickly get ready to return to the field and the heavy barbells are waiting for them coming up after the break to the all-you-can-eat buffet to CrossFit total our third event of the opening some huge [Music] nothing brings the vans out at the CrossFit Games like heavyweight he been three is all about strength [Applause] the CrossFit total is another familiar test back squat strict press deadlift for max weight not only is it done around the world in CrossFit gyms on a regular basis but it has appeared at the games before at the very first cross the games in 2007 athletes were tested in the back squat strict press and deadlift Connor banks won the event with a total of 1225 now one of four men with more than a thousand pounds I think you're gonna see some guys who go out there and stay conservative to not be the guy that blows out and hope that guys blow out and they're gonna have some guys that know that they've got a shot and they're gonna probably take it and I think if they have a shot probably their first and second lifts are gonna put them in a decent position on excited for this next role you know it's very simple it's important to know what you're capable of and what like what you're the weights are gonna fight you for it'll be interesting to see how strong these guys are everywhere they just keep getting better and better and better so yep should be good all ten men in the first of three heats surpassed 1000 pounds australia's royce done would have glitter rated done 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games athletes have faced a criterium bike race a test of gymnastic skill now it's all about strength top work is still 1255 pounds unofficially and that belongs to Royce done that has stood since the first of three heats of the day for events total here on the opening day for the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games the busiest is probably the most difficult day we have ever had to open the competition to crowd the fittest man on earth there are three different lifts in this event freezer looks to regain the lead on the first one now that phrase for 465 pounds look it still looks like he's warming up Adrian boo trailer is your overall leader the question is for how much Walker though Oh that sticking point in the middle while Monday the alert falls back in the pack at valanor looked to keep Fraser within striking distance another athlete that needs a good event here packing Felner rough start with that bike race trying to get himself back in there with the muscle ups but again it's a bear athlete overall Patrick Felder we'll hit that but Frasier continues to add weight and continues to build his lead 485 for the champion happy about that day what what a things at math Center is it he was bummed that he was in the lead I think he kind of likes having someone chase somebody kind of gives him that feel again to fly the past two years about Frasier has won across the gates he has taken the overall lead for good after three events we could have deja vu all over again right now Brent Bukowski who finished second overall to Fraser at the CrossFit Games last year looks to make a move in the shoulder press but he barely says Bukowski but instead of moving up the standings drops he ties for 20th the event Cole Sager also slides down the leaderboard Cole sagres gonna take a slight jumping over to 25 downtown for call Sager despite hitting that live he finishes tied for 17th in the event Matt Fraser stays in the lead with one lift remaining Fraser 205 no problem but pathbuilder becomes a problem for Frazer in the deadlift Patrick Felder who last year had to dig himself out of a hole after finishing 36th in the opening event he's in a similar situation now bellman overtakes Frasier on his first lift Fraser loses the lead but has his eyes on another goal there's very good chances once again after three events could be your overall winner Frazier will hit his like Matt Fraser just passed a he knows where he is that's all he needs to do bell nerd needs a big lift that Fraser didn't need a big lift and felder is lining up for a huge lift at 595 pounds less than 32 goes over plenty of time for Pat Felder I did hard the bat Felder needed this week for the fences and nonpoint out of the park and he does that in event number three you know that you'd say it I got you think you're bad I got you bell nerd takes second in the event he moves from 23rd tonight Matt Fraser finishes eighth in the CrossFit total but more importantly he moves into the overall beat fans and athletes head to the Coliseum for the final event of the day did he get a beer all three loved them oh yeah all three laughs Wow close the dead oh you mean like all three like like squat press Stella why you I interpreted that as all three it's like that's aggressive the big opener yeah that was good I needed to do well I actually don't know where it puts me in an overall like in that event so hopefully it's a good total I have no idea but yeah it's nice to do well get some momentum anyway start chugging in the right direction one event remains but day one of the CrossFit Games is far from over coming up he's the mastermind behind the CrossFit Games Dave Castro gives us a glimpse at the methods behind his [Music] behind every test is the person to create so that might change now is make these a little with the prosper games Batman is Dave Castro he is the man the athletes love to hate the man who is responsible for pushing them to their limits and beyond 370 you crushed her lifetime Castro has been the creative force behind the CrossFit Games since their inception his family's Ranch hosted the first competition in 2007 there were just three events over the next two years the games went from backyard barbecue to an international affair athletes from around the world descended upon the dusty ranch to take on the ultimate test of fitness having outgrown their confines at the Castro family ranch the games relocated to Carson California in 2010 the sport of fitness exploded icons emerged athletes like rich Froning and Annie Thorisdottir became the first superstars of CrossFit for seven years the games thrived in Southern California in 2017 they found their current home Madison Wisconsin locations have changed over the years the number of events has increased and the test continues to get tougher but one thing has remained constant Dave Castro and just like the games the method behind his madness continues to be ball dave has a great vision of what he wants to accomplish at the CrossFit Games and he's really committed to seeing that vision realized it usually starts with themes or it starts with a couple building blocks and then he'll kind of fill in the blanks around those so you start putting these things on a wall you start laying them out you know o'course cyclocross run swim run these are empty spots that are programmed but I'm gonna program them as traditional CrossFit and this being left tested it so this is testing with time with the athlete with the day 17.5 but at 135 I love it I don't know if this is a 9 or 10 minute workout or if this is like 11 in 12 or 13 14 that is kind of why we want to test to figure it out I'm programming for the test a programming for the spectacle I'm programming for the theatrics of it I'm programming for the actual entertainment and also testing strength and also testing endurance and also testing different movement you gain good hits I'm thinking 16 pull-ups 30 or 40 ski or towel 20 people per team - again I got you 45 talk about allergy issues I bet you I do this is my form of art and I try to get better at it and there's the little things like you know any of these workouts can be done in one spot in your gym but we lay them out across the whole floor sometimes we add multiple rigs so they're just like a straight race through that's part of the art of it that's part of just seeing five rigs out there is powerful and it's just a big welcome to the CrossFit Games that's the stuff we do at the CrossFit Games we go big Castro is going big for the final event of day one forty two thousand one hundred and ninety five meters on a rower you know Roll Marathon nice nice finisher mitts finisher for your day Alex is pumped he just got water lame like I'm packing for a trip right now gonna make sure I have all my stuff no potty pen if that's the plan is if you have to go go you know that's funny if I just telling him like this is the only time I've is gonna be awful the final event of day one is also the longest in fact it's the longest in duration and distance in CrossFit Games history the athletes have been at the Alliant Energy Center for nearly ten hours they are about to spend three more sitting on a rower settle in to cap off the opening day of the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games Dave Castro said this would be the most difficult day in CrossFit Games history and he is correct 42,000 195 meters [Music] [Music] fittest on earth the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games on CBS Sports Network he sponsored by røde fitness the official equipment supplier for the CrossFit Games and by a rusty the official athlete care provider with over 150 locations nationwide Dave Castro likes to repeat tests at the CrossFit Games to measure the progress of the athletes he also likes to make those tests more difficult at the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games athletes had to complete a half marathon row in 2018 the field is deeper and more fit a half marathon is not enough for these men event for the marathon road continues we are passed to the one hour bark here at the Coliseum idiot lion Energy Center in Madison Wisconsin mat Fraser holding steady right now in sixth place Rasmus Anderson was the man who led for about an hour right now he is falling back into second place while Anderson moves back Lucas s Linderman job this is your new leader Lucas Eslinger has just passed ethan helping before the the two of them just moving past the 15,750 party Esslinger stays out front Brent fikowski refuses to stay where he is on the men's side Brent Bukowski has made a methodical tribe through the ranks here and right now is in fifth place in this event Lucas Homburg sits in second and with each pull he is picking up points on overall leader Matt Fraser [Applause] that's Jackie Anna one of the things that Holbrook has had over the last year since he missed going to the games last year there's been a massive shift in his training and I tell you what for being a larger athlete he has turned the gas on when it comes to any sort of endurance type of in while Hauberg reels in Matt Fraser in the point standings he will not catch Lucas Eslinger for the event win dinky pace himself welling up on that first half marathon then he's able to kind of finish on this back half because look at him he looks great he doesn't look over extended or tired and he is hearing it from this crowd as they salute his effort in the longest defense in plastic games history points [Applause] Oh bird is done second place 94 points and these two look pretty good for just having road of marathon Polk Burke is also looking good in the overall standings old men continue to come across the finish line between him and Matt Fraser Cole Sager takes 3rd fret Bukowski
