it is a beautiful weather day in nashville tennessee now tony siragusa you've been watching film on this undefeated panthers team why are they playing so well you know tom ron rivera the one thing he does is he keeps it simple they have a great recipe for success they play lights out physical defense they establish a new line of scrimmage they're all running to the ball you're going to see that today offensively they protect the ball they're plus 6-10 a turnover ratio and they run the ball extremely well the other factor is cam newton keeps the chains moving with his feet you're gonna have to go and contain them contain him as your tennessee and we'll be checking in with tony throughout the entire day mike malarkey taking over for ken wisenheim just last week got the win in new orleans what a job ron rivera's done i mean it looked like he was on the brink of being fired two years ago 40 31 31-1 they've been to the playoffs in back-to-back years tennessee won the toss and he is slammed down at the 17th the reigning eisman trophy winner number two pick marcus mariota had one of his best games in his young nfl career last week 371 yards and four touchdowns in that overtime win look very poised coming back i think mike malarkey the interim head coach did a nice job in changing the offensive line to give him better protection as well as how they did things keeping the tight end in chipping off the backs they just don't want him getting hit any more than he's been hit this year [Music] [Applause] short jump in complete second down and 10. last time we were here charles antonio andrews was right on the brink of taking over for bishop sankey and he is now they're starting in primary running back that's because he brings a real physical element to his runs he finishes everything that he does once again without kendall wright today he is inactive with a knee they'll miss his speed on the outside they're hoping beckham continues to progress at wide receiver the buster fumbled the ball and it looks like he was able to fall back on top of it looks like a little indecision on who wanted it on that play they're trying to decide is he going to give it to him is he going to take it he handed it to him and dexter mccluster didn't clamp down quick enough jared allen number 69 right there reading the play that's what made it hard he was right in the face of both mccluster and mariota and made it a difficult decision whether to give it off or take it away [Music] the third most times in the nfl 17 times on the year panthers showing blitz only a four-man rush [Applause] mariota running around he just throws it away it'll be three and out what a beautiful defensive possession guys for the carolina panthers as tom called it everyone was up to the line of scrims and they all backed out and look at them covering all the passing lanes where are you going to go with it nowhere for marcus mariota to throw the football to a guy wearing blue did the smart thing and threw it away and now they have to punt it ted jr in his career has returned four punts for touchdowns none this year but he is dangerous anytime with a ball in his hands and they just kick it out of bounds see where they're gonna spot it here the [Applause] 37-yard line so here comes the first pick in the 2011 draft and like mariota heisman trophy winner can do it with his arm can do it on the ground two pro bowls back-to-back trips to the playoffs for cam dude i really don't think it's hyperbole to say he's the most unique quarterback we've seen maybe in this league because of the way they use him as a runner not as a flashing dash guy and get down but it's a true running back who'll drop the shoulder to pick up additional yardage he doesn't look like a quarterback out there either we're down here on the field today like a linebacker 235 we say he's closer to 260 right now this is jonathan stewart who no longer has to share time with deangelo williams in that backfield up front they're still without their starting left guard andrew norwell he has missed back-to-back games [Music] and really after they lost benjamin and training camp to the knee injury they may not be household names but a good receiving call and getting better all the time led by the tight end greg olsen who's their primary receiver two tight ends here on second and one got bottled up and then picks up the first down to the 47-yard line make no mistake about it tennessee's record might be two and six but on defense they have played good football and look at the guys up front daquan jones doesn't get the attention but he's playing almost as well as jerrell casey with their pro bowl defensive end the guys at the linebacker position wesley woodyard is their leader and in the backfield that's where they have the issues cody sensabaugh has to start as does bleeding by wilson due to injuries to their normal starters and jason mccord first luke looking down the field and a strike even with greg olsen falling down he manages to make a reception to the 32-yard line what a year olson is having again and he's going to do it all day long from different spots this time he's in line as a normal tight end what they call the wide position and look at him just circling to an open spot no one picks him up there just finds open grass and cam newton delivers 20-yard reception for olson 38th couch of the year and he'll add another one to it short of a first down to the 24-yard line i'm eager to see this game tony to see if tennessee just says you know something greg olsen your primary receiver i'm gonna double him all the time and make that the guys outside wide beat me absolutely i'll tell you what on the last three plays they brought pressure five or even more they're just having a hard time the offensive line is really playing well for carolina right now stopping that penetration give a lot of credit to amini silatolu number 66 he stepped in front left guard for the injured andrew norwell as tom talked about at the top [Applause] second down and two up to tennessee 24. spinning away from one tackle and yet another is steward but denying the first half woodyard the first one there to get him and this is a spot on the field where cam newton becomes a primary ball carrier let's see if carolina wants to go there if they want to continue to run the big backs they ran tolbert a short yardage earlier today do they go there or do they go ahead and use their number one weapon with a big number one on his shirt third down and two very close to a first down we'll see there is a penalty flag down on the field he appears to be short second straight time he was stacked up in a pile and then found a little bit of space last time he picked up the first down this time is closer and there's another flag we don't have a game illegal formation number 74 offense he was uncovered on the end of the line it's a five yard penalty it's still third down well he wonder where the second penalty was i thought he might get greg olson it looked like he was in there arguing the call right from the start yeah because because we saw in the middle there was just what you pointed out another flag came up right in the middle while they were discussing it there's remmer said before they call the penalty on and right there that's the line judge byron boston throwing a second flag but that was never discussed all right third and two goes to third down and seven they're backed up to the 29 yard line tennessee is a pressure type team looking at no one with their hands on the ground in their formation until now only a three-man rush and there is olson it's like money in the bank to the 19 in the first half everybody says they want to slow this guy down and nobody seems to do it tony i don't think what anyone understands we see olson here in the slot now remember he was in line tight end before and once again just runs a route where he finds an open area but he's not being double he's not being hit off the line of scrimmage it's a very strange phenomenon that the leading receiver coming into the game already has three catches and none of them have really been contested [Applause] stewart looking for running room and he's to the 16-yard line a gain of three on first half stewart taking center stage in the panthers backfield after the release of d'angelo williams having a good year closing in on 600 yards and you look at him in the number of years he's been in the league eight and you wonder about a running back slowing down but to your point with all the carries he split with d'angelo williams not as much mileage on him would be a normal guy who'd been a lead [Applause] back [Applause] to the end zone touchdown jonathan stewart what an impressive opening drive for this 8-0 carolina panthers team 16 yards on the touchdown and look at cam newton he's orchestrated everything and gets him into the right place look at that gap you talk about plenty of vision and hope and a hole for him and he runs right past michael griffin number 33 and hurdles his way and he hurls his way into the end zone a terrific start a great drive for carolina well getting booed is cam newton and stewart they gave the ball all the panthers give the ball to a young kid sitting in the stands after they celebrate a touchdown [Applause] [Music] nothing carolina well it doesn't get much better than that newton three out of three three catches by olson you're running for 30 yards seven nothing played right into who they are a run first football team who when they have to throw the ball they want to throw the greg olsen first i think my biggest surprise is watching as this season unfolds that there's not more double teaming making it tougher on greg olsen to get off the line of scrimmage because that's what they want to get the ball to mccluster one yard into his own end zone across the tent and again is denied the 20. excellent special teams coverage by carolina and now uh some pushing and shoving going on and more than just a little bit [Applause] tennessee came into today determined not to back down to carolina flat out determined wanting to stand up for themselves and emboldened by their win last week and carolina's trying not to have an emotional let down after the tough schedule they played and conquered recently so we may have a few dustups as we go along today cam newton telling us running mate now find some kid let's give that football away that's the panthers way these days well done [Applause] [Music] carolina in front seven nothing forced to three and out on tennessee's first offensive series and march right down the field for the first score of the game right there to meet andrews on first down tony had an interesting observation during our timeout a moment ago yeah so what happened the penalty before the touchdown uh number 74 uh mike rammers did not report eligible so there was a penalty on the on the play actually the titans stopped carolina it would have been fourth down now walt anderson went over and talked to mike malarkey mike miller chose to go and make it third and seven instead of third and one but that could have been a difference between a field goal and what we saw as a touchdown so that could come back to haunt them they have been a fourth and one as opposed to third and seven they pitch it to mccluster and oh my goodness that is shaq thompson the rookie number one pick and i mean he laid a big one on mccluster this one this is what we used to call let me introduce myself tony absolutely now this right here is how you tackle right here wrap them up lift them up it's almost like a wrestling move like a double leg take down right there i like how he drives his feet and doesn't let the guy with the ball the runner go and get any more yardage right there that's called stone cold stopping that's good a mighty fine tight end in his own right and that is the first big play of the game for tennessee they pick up 22. now for both of these teams their number one receiver is their tight end and in this case tennessee chose to use delaney walker split out as a wide receiver and he just ran around just like one inside of charles peanut tillman number 31 really accurate throw for marcus mariota big first down for tennessee big game last week big career really since getting the chance to play regularly out in san francisco and another big hit delivered by a carolina defender this one by their outstanding quarterback and he'll talk about it after he hits you too is josh norman and already in this game what we've seen and tony to me this team closes as well as anyone in the league on defense talk about carolina yeah that's why you know when you watch them on film what really impressed me was how they play as a unit the pressure up front the man-to-man coverage but when that ball is out everybody is right for the ball that's why they're plus six and [Applause] turnovers [Music] [Music] fortunate there because josh norman had him lined up and marcus mariota whose knee is progressively getting better so we will see a little bit more quarterback run game watch norman 24. see because mariota did not slide he did not tell you he was going to slide and get the protection afforded when you stay up like that and come in head first you're still a runner and you're subject to the big hits clear down at five four-man rush mariota steps out of there he's gonna run it slides in midfield for the first half he did a lot of that and you saw him do it charles in his final year in oregon and i love the way he's such a quick learner one play after not sliding and taking potentially a big time shot from josh norman he gets into open field knows he has the first down and look at the intelligence come into play now slides protects himself one play learn quick that's what i love about marcus mariota apparently we're having some kind of clock problem the clock did not win at all during that last play now it's also time is also kept on the field as a backup so when they figure out that the clock didn't run someone should have kept that on the field with their timing and we should get an announcement saying please reset the clock to a certain number and off we should go please reset the game clock to 603 and it will the game clock and the play clock which will be reset to 25 seconds will start on my signal started talking about malarkey you know he he had a chance in buffalo was there for two years as a head coach 2012 in jacksonville thought he'd never get another chance so they have eight games to go and we'll see how it goes he may have a chance to keep this job and he's talked about this could still be a playoff team remember the only one game out in the lost country in the afc south that will that will bolster your credentials to keep the job andrew's off the right side a real nice run on first down that'll be a gain of seven and that's why he has the job guys bishop sankey is more highly touted but antonio andrews runs with the physicality and does such a good job in pass protection which is paramount now with this young quarterback that that's why he has a job as the lead runner for tennessee everyone's wondering what's up with bishop sankey it's very simply this antonio andrews has not played it it's a game of six so suck it down and four and no running round this time it'll bring up third down keeply has his helmet ripped off and he's going after where's that jared allen that is out 69 not 59. and he got into it with it looks like is that supernov no no he's 88 that was craig stevens check in quickly back in la with trenton up in the first quarter tom charles and these tight ends can run nowadays can't they i mean this is a whole different ball game third down and it's caught what a nice reception and that's anthony fazano he is a very underrated player he's been a good player in this league for a long time people may have forgotten he was a first round draft pick of the dallas cowboys back in the day so here's pizzano he's just going to go into the flat here and mariota finds it but look at the nimbleness of fasano pulls it down runs up the sideline and gains big time additional yardage look at him reach out and catch it turn and get up field if you're a defensive back he you don't want him running here secondary he's a big boy now not now not with a 10 to 12 yard head start you certainly don't 6'4 255 coming your way down to 25 and again it's on the ground to mccutchen and along the sideline dives waiting touchdown [Applause] what a great second effort on this one oh tremendous but watch the hole that's created here for dexter mccluster look at this it's about wide open and now he's got nothing but vision out there he can see it did he step out that's what they have to determine because that right foot before he launched because the ball hits the pylon inside that should be a touchdown if he does not step out of bounds on the sideline you see right there at the end kirk coleman trying to get to him with the ball gap to the goal line and the pylon if he stayed in bounds that's that's six it's a first roaching touchdown there's a touchdown the previous play is under further review well they review every single scoring play if it stands it'll be their first rushing touchdown since the fifth game of the year we wait on the judiciary's ruling after reviewing the play the ruling on the field stands touchdown so 25-yard touchdown run by dexter mccluster yeah and i think it's the right call let's take a look right here there's mccluster you still see green there with that blue and the white spat job and then he dives and the ball hits the pylon and gets in and watch it look to the right of your screen behind the play with dexter mccluster you'll see an official come into play i saw his shoulder there byron boston the line judge he was right there no reason to turn that one over ryan suck up for the point after to tie it it is good 10 plays 82 yards mccluster finding the end zone 10 plays 82 yards nearly five minutes you don't see many of those kind of drives against this carolina defense no you don't and the key to me on that drive third down because tennessee struggled all year with about 34 on third down three for three on third down against one of the better defensive units in the league that's why that drive ended up in the end zone ozzy whitaker waiting back on the kick and he'll take a knee well the one thing about cam newton is he is not afraid to show his personality likes having a lot of fun and you know what after spending time with his teammates and his head coach ron rivera they are a-okay with all of it what's the old expression they get him they understand it i'm sure when he first hit the league and the veterans were checking him out maybe there's i'm not so sure about all this but they understand how hard he plays how much he cares about the team he doesn't care about stats people think he does that's not the thing his stat is eight no and his team gets him so all that joy of how he plays they're totally fine with it yesterday not one time has he ever walked into mike schuler and me and say hey i need more touchdown passes and more touchdown yards let me up my percentage with some different passes they'll throw it on first down and there is his money man and that is olson up to the 34-yard line a gain of 14 on first half this just does not make sense to me that greg olsen gets such easy releases into the secondary it's not like this is a phantom raider showing up today and hey let's throw the ball to olson they've been doing it all year as the primary guy he's getting three releases in the secondary and running his routes and getting open olson his 135th consecutive game only jason whitton has a longer consecutive game streaking tight end [Applause] newton somebody else will catch one besides corey brown in his second year out of ohio state and what helps them since their run first team over 50 percent of their plays our running plays is the ability to throw the ball deep when they want to get people up up close corey brown gives him speed out wide as does ted ginn jr to take the shots downfield to keep the defense loose newton five out of five 60 yards to start the afternoon second down and two from the 42 and they'll throw it or wilby newton lots of green in front of it and he will run to the firsthand marker to move the chains up to the 45. [Music] oh by the way that means first half i was out last night walked taking a walk after our meeting and coming down the street and encountered some fans walking with my son and you see cam good vision understands where the first down marker is and a person was going by and someone said go titans and a person from carolina turned and gave him the cam newton first down signal so don't pull it off there he pulled it off pretty well down the middle of the field and the reception is made by the rookie out of michigan darren functions he had a 52-yard reception last week and his first nfl touchdown watch all the way to the right top your screen 17 in white look at him turned number 25 bleeding ray wilson all the way around on the post move and that ball was delivered perfectly right on time right in rhythm and devin funchus is making a leap now folks he's starting to really get into the rhythm of being an nfl receiver he's a big man that's a lot of men i'm telling him he certainly is 6 4 225 pounder and that one was read out beautifully they were setting up the screen that looked like the stewart first in completion of a game by newton [Music] he's down on the field in pregame and had a chance to talk with dev and punch us a little bit and he said his goal for the rest of the way is to play to that 6-4 225 all the time because if he does that he's got a chance to be a dangerous receiver ineligible down field number 70 on the offense prior to the pass being thrown it's five yard penalty still second down that came rather late let's send it back to curt menifee in los angeles for a game break all right the philadelphia eagles have won three of their last four and they're rolling already against miami ryan matthews little one-yard score still in the first quarter they're up 16-3 on top of the dolphins tom charles and deuce thanks curt the nfc east who wants to seize it and take it yeah philadelphia said he's definitely putting her hand up saying they want a piece of it stewart on first down and it's williamson staying with the play and runs him out of bounds after the 35-yard line very nice play was that carl 97 who did a really nice job at defensive tackle he can also play defensive end watch kluge inside helping to stack this up does a nice job getting out in front and then he stays with it gets a hand on him first it makes him bounce it so that avery williamson 54 has a chance to finish things off legendary dick lebeau last 11 years a defensive coordinator with the steelers in his first year and his right-hand man ray horton they worked very well running this tennessee defense newton what a throw and a catch made by another former buckeye that's ted kim jr a first down to the 15-yard line [Applause] that'll be the final play of what has been a very entertaining opening quarter fox nfl sunday continues after a word from your local fox station how about this driver look at the key numbers from the first quarter tennessee jumping out came into the game 31 percent on third downs three of four in the first quarter but look at the yards for play almost 10 yards a play for carolina and they're throwing the ball on first down five pass plays two runs on first down so far today again the 19-yard reception puts it first and ten at the tennessee 14. cam newton in total charge of this offense now doing all the orchestration and getting him into the right place in one way came back that's dicks in the back of tight hands about the growth of him that we've seen over the years guys in terms of cam newton taking charge of an offense where they put it in his hands this year well he had three touchdown passes against green bay ran for another the 15th game already in his career with two or more passing touchdowns and a running touchdown one of only three quarterbacks to ever reach that number in a career encroachment number 96 defense five yard penalty still second down big al woods jumping into the neutral zone trying to get a little advantage on coming off the ball there but you have to because ryan khalil is opposite him at center number 67 one of the best centers in the league you need every advantage you can get when you're playing against him he's a terrific player second and seven becomes second down and [Applause] two [Applause] [Music] and the ball comes loose scrambles to get it i think they're going to say the ground calls it at the one-yard line olson again in line as a tight end and another free release no one chips him when he comes across the middle tony if you're a defensive coordinator would you not think maybe that greg olsen is a key part of their offense i mean when you go all week and you run scout team and you have the guy on the other you know on your scout team with 88 you've got to put lights on this guy because this you need to find him the secondary has to go and take him into consideration he's a huge part of this offense extra offensive lineman two tight hands and again they're gonna throw it and in the end zone it is dixon for the touchdown his first of the year tell you what man cam newton is having some kind of game 10 out of 10 and now i gotta find a youngster in the stands ed dixon look at that little man oh that young lady gave it to very nice and it's the continued orchestration by cam newton not only of the offense but of the touchdown celebrations he gets there to make sure the guys give the ball to someone and he points it out hey make sure it's a little kid let's make them happy today tell you what the titans secondary is making it nice and easy for this panthers team to go down the field the secondary really needs to get it together that guy's running wide open in a second point after goodwill charles you have your son this week tony why don't you bring your son i'll bring my two we'll put him in a four corners in charlotte maybe we hit the lottery with four balls well at least a career high to start a game for cam newton 10 out of 10 115 yards touchdown to dixon a moment ago tell you why this young man is so impressive i don't know why it was charles it seems like when he first came in the league you know your people talk about him he's not he's fake it's it's a yep i remember that very well a lot of that kind of talk that all goes away when you win guys sure does real quick and he has matured yes yes talked about his love for children long time with us yesterday and he's making sure all his teammates are giving footballs away to kids it's good stuff [Applause] it's a big league place right there the country music hall of fame in downtown nashville man in ryman auditorium before you get to the hall of fame you played ryman you've made it no doubt about it all right 14-7 game back on offense after a touchdown drive the last time they had the football mariota and the titans how about the last series of third down tennessee had to convert marcus mariota with his arm to delaney walker big kick up then he goes with his legs no one open picks it up there and this pass out into the flat to anthony fasano and he picks up additional yardage after the catch three of three on third downs this young man keeping tennessee in the ball game three or four overall after that opening drive went three and out and clustered the touchdown and he's up to the 25 it'll bring up third down and four so another third down you know on our pregame show today our guys were talking about marcus mariota jameis winston who do you like who's this who's that listen i love them both and i'm not gonna bribe defense winston is playing over his last four games as well as you could you could play i mean it's big time but this kid here he's just as special because we thought he wasn't a pocket guy and he's doing most of his damage from the pocket in his young career he adapts and picks up things so quickly it's amazing watching him mature third down and there's the cluster again he beat keithley and a first down up to the 37-yard line there's him sitting in the pocket right there charles and mike charles you wonder if the knee injury has not forced him a little bit now to stay in that pocket it has helped with that i think he's healthy as healthy as he's been since the knee injury so we see we've seen him take off and go but i think he's learned how to be more selective and tony i think you're right about that that knee injury has forced him to be even more of a pocket guy and be more judicious before he takes off take it one way roll the other and dump it off to the fullback jousting fowler the rookie out of alabama and that is a 14-yard gain across midfield and i think that carolina is going to get the memo and if they haven't already they've got to figure it out they know that mariota hurt the knee a few weeks ago but he has enough mobility now to do what he wants we've seen it already the way he takes off and goes it looks very similar to what i remember at oregon and early this season i just think that tony's point is well taken they're going to be a little more selective on when they take him up take him out of the pocket and turn him running down field down here on that field he has that extra gear when he kicks it in man i'll take it he can move good protection here wide open is delaney walker to the 32 well in the first seven games of the year titan quarterbacks were sacked 28 times mariota was not sacked at all last week and here's delaney walker who's been a great target for him and he gets a little bit of a free release himself into the secondary jack thompson had a chance to really put some hands on him doesn't do it very well and here's mariota delivering takes the hit afterwards but still stands in there and throws another strike first down andrews tries to cut it back to the inside and runs him down at the line of scrimmage and you can hear the carolina panthers faithful that made this trip their favorite cry is luke and they draw it out well for each tackle he makes which means they do it a lot look at this career coming tony 528 since 2012 in terms of tackles that's amazing and he missed three games this year due to a concussion looked like movement on the right side by byron bill the former player number 76 offense five yard penalty it's the second down kurt thank you very much and this is bishop saint they remember he was a second round pick a year ago the first running back taken in last year's draft that's his first carry guys in three games they like what antonio andrews brings them in terms of physicality running the football as well as terrific pass protection because their number one goal now is keep marcus mariota upright and not hit as much sankey has to start competing for his job and run with a little more physicality inside that's what they want to see from him [Applause] [Applause] by the former falcon harry douglas and out comes the field goal unit another good drive another good drive for tennessee but you can see how important how important it is for mike malarkey to have that ball out of the hands of marcus mariota even on a on a down and distance that you want to take maybe a longer drop and a little bit more time to throw the ball they want the ball of his hands quickly they do not want him getting hit the way he was earlier this year with those 26 sacks tom cited tony took 19. yeah and that offsides penalty crossing the five would have been first down on that play 45-yard field goal try by succumbing and it is good it's been a good game very good starts for newton and mariota cam gets a football when we return look at me now mariota 7 out of 10 so far today 14-10 game carolina in front cam newton has been perfect today 10 out of 10. [Music] and half of those targets and catches have been to his main man greg olsen both teams moving the ball well offensively so far today ball of the 20-yard line and tony when i say free release for greg olsen wow that's all we've seen all day i mean at some point defensively you know that question do they have somebody recovering you got to get a guy like a brian iraq post somebody on the line of scrimmage to disrupt you know who's round running right now you got to get physical with a guy like this if you let olsen run free like that you're going to have a long day the points are just going to go and accumulate you're just going to have no shock you need to get physical with him see i think that's the main point you've got to do something like that because just covering him is going to be difficult in and of [Applause] itself stewart off the left side is written down by zach brown four-yard gain a little misdirection there we're seeing some of that from carolina seeing how they take the ball and move it one way and then have the runner cut back mike malarkey called a little bit of wing t elements wing t offense said you gotta be sound and disciplined and if you do that on defense the ball will find you cam took it himself and very close to a first half did he get to the 30-yard line it looked like he did [Music] a little reminder coming up tomorrow we've got cops on the edge evil alliances an army of assassins no back alley throwdown gotham rise of the villains all new tomorrow right here on fox tell you that is pretty true to the original gotham city really batman comics very dark people think you know that can't be stuff we saw in the 60s this is true to the original premise and a strange written character in a nutshell cam did not give the first down and now he does third down the foot you know being a nose guard you know when i came into this league if you get a guy like cam newton running a quarterback sneak how do you stop him the size of his body the size of his legs the length of how he can go and stretch the ball out i mean he's bigger than some of them offensive lineman it looks like he just gets low like this and drives even if you're the low man and leverage it's difficult isn't it i just don't i don't know what i would do right now we just applaud exactly or cry if you're rooting for the other team and another completed pass and again dicks in the back of tight end 11 of 11 as cam newton so far today that offensive line for carolina giving cam newton all the time he needs to look downfield guys wide open playing great today against a good defensive line from tennessee 17-yard gain it is at the 47-yard line first down for carolina down the field into traffic had an eye on ted yen jr so for the first time today and in completion by cam newton and nice coverage by cody senza ball number 24. he made a play on the football this wasn't an incompletion just because they didn't connect this was an incompletion because cody sensabaugh was right on the hit of ticket and makes a play on the football and helps force it and you see also coming underneath and wearing number 55 that was zach brown falling back into coverage from his linebacker position stewart looking for a running room and just not much hit a gain of two it'll bring up third down at eight clock winding down under five and a half until halftime at the top of the show i describe the carolina panthers as a team that knows who they are and they understand this is the best way we can win football games run the ball throw it to our primary targets meaning tight ends occasionally downfield to wide receivers cam newton has a running back as well as a quarterback and they're very comfortable with it and that's so different from everyone else in this league timeout this is the first charge timeout carolina so a third native coming with 453 to play until halftime panthers lead by four final leads under five to go until halftime third down and eight for midfield blind's coming and newton dropped to the 40. damien stafford on the safety blitz yes watch coming i think he's right here i believe this is stafford right in the middle and yes he gets a free run at the quarterback and the reason it was a free run everyone else on the team did their job their responsibilities in executing the blitz not everyone is designed to get home to the quarterback sometimes you're supposed to eat up blockers his team selflessly gave themselves up and stafford was the beneficiary and the team results with a big big sack on that play first time we've seen brad norton today in his punt i figured captain of the 12-yard line carolina didn't know already a two and a half game lead over atlanta who was off this weekend you know we we talk about tennessee at two and six but not out of it everybody under 500 in the afc south just one game out in the lost column is tennessee and for carolina they're not home free yet they still have two games with atlanta down the stretch so this is a vital game for them as well and another game deploy in new orleans [Applause] first down delaney walker up to the 28 yard line [Applause] titans have all three timeouts and a two-minute warning they always say a tight end is a young quarterback's best friend i think a tight end any quarterback's best friend easy throws good sight lines get the ball in their hands quickly and out of your hands quickly to avoid the rush they're such big targets in that open field i mean you know size wise i mean they just shout out right to you in his third year out of purdue really having an outstanding year and remember he was in the same draft with star lotulla and lotullah was the first round pick but short has really jumped things up early watch in the middle here gabon short goes right through the attempted block of joe rooney 78 right through his shoulder pad area and gets right into the backfield to spill the play short was the nfc's player of the month in october and five sacks had six on the year mariota to run it and slides down by kurt coleman no penalty flag just short of a first hand this is a tough judgment call for the officials we saw something similar last week didn't we with saint louis of minnesota yeah he's going into a slide and he's actually losing the football has to get the football back as he goes down and the tackle executed over the top by kurt coleman he was going into an obvious slide [Applause] well they're going to get this play off third and two before the the answer is no [Applause] just now they realize that this is a two-minute warning crowd really upset this was not a 15-yarder on kurt coleman kid apps video and more at itunes dot com slash nfl well after the slide by mariota third down in a long yard [Music] [Applause] knocking bridgewater out of the game on third in the yard i don't know if decks of a cluster got it i don't think that he did i think he's short by a decent amount i mean normally in third and short you're not running your scat back into the teeth of the defense normally that's an antonio andrews type of a carry but they gave it to mccluster and i thought carolina stacked that up very well i can't wait to see where the actual spot was and where it is on the chains but i thought he was short by a decent amount now the yellow line is unofficial that we have here on fox so good call on that one but see that short yep but it's pretty close right guys you have to put this 144 to go carolina will get it back two timeouts remaining hey mike pereira i want to join you back in los angeles you know just looking at those two plays and i'm sure mike malarkey was asking the same thing a moment ago did you think that was a play that should have drawn a flag no i'll tell you i didn't for one thing you know a lot of the quarterback slides are late slides and what the officials are told is even though it's a late slide it's only going to be a foul if you lead with the helmet and make contact with the crown of your helmet or you go to the head or neck area with your shoulder or forearm and neither in that case i don't think happened so to me they were right not throwing the flag in the situation i agree with you you know we were talking after looking at that that the the joyner play he went in with a forearm he went in with the elbow made contact with bridgewater's head coleman did nothing like that in that last play and look out ted king jr one of the fastest man in football and he will take it the distance ted again junior and there is a penalty flag all the way back to the 20-yard line that may take away an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown it would be the fifth in carolina and joe webb's been having a sensational season as a special teams player one of the top vote getters for the pro bowl already and he just wiped away a punt return for a touchdown let's take a look here and to the right of your screen was where the play occurred and we'll see if we can get it here coming back to the right of your sk coming back right back at you right there yep and he was nowhere near the now how many times do we see that in the course of a game the guy that's farthest away or not really impacting where the play is occurring trying to help out ends up getting the flag and it brings it back tennessee saved on that play all righty so we have one minute left to go panthers with two timeouts remaining schooling for a gain of two and coming up at halftime outbound curtain benefits coming up at halftime johnny football gets another start to the grounds in pittsburgh the eagles host the dolphins and hope to keep pace in the nfc east we've got all that and a lot more so stick around how's that tv no that's not good america wants more me you should know that by now mark let's talk about tv in mission control letting them know more of me is a good thing another running play and slam behind the line of scrimmage is steward by daquan jones and that'll be the final play or is it steward's slow to get up daquan jones to the top of your screen wasn't even blocked and then yeah hey listen i wasn't the greatest player in the world but you know my coach has always told me an unblocked player ought to be a pretty good player on defense all right you ought to be a big player too and daquan jones is having a very nice season quietly jerrell casey is their headliner on the defensive line but daquan jones is playing almost as well as casey who's playing at maybe a pro bowl level well tennessee took a timeout they have two remaining so listen they're gonna play here you're gonna force him to punt who knows listen we just saw carolina bring back a punt return so if you're tennessee if you can stop them here force them to punt it maybe they can give them a dose of their own medicine and make it stand up two and six you want to play aggressively yeah as you pointed out they're only a game out in the lost column in their division and mike malarkey has said we haven't quit talking about the playoffs around here there's no reason to do that so let's go out and play and see what [Applause] happens third down to 12 we need to get to the 24 yard line take one way fake the other way holster catch looking for running room and just none there shot down at the five time out 12 seconds for me greg olson was trying to make the play tony and almost ran himself into a horrible situation yeah he was you know they did a great job tennessee of rallying the troops and coming back and swarming to the ball and there was nowhere for greg olson to go in this situation right here i wouldn't be surprised if they go after this and try to go and block this one why not 12 seconds to go in the half force them into a bad situation how much worse can your feet make field positions pretty good to begin with i'm with you you take your shot trying to get one so brad norton out of his own end zone mccluster right at midfield [Applause] four seconds left well there's a new tradition in college basketball the gavin tip off games the big east against the big ten for four days it begins november the 17th that's this week nebraska against villanova only on fox sports one villanova ranked number 11. and maybe the best dressed coach in america jay wright yes that meant his dapper and by the way he can coach yes good good good program he's got going on and tip of the cap to big daddy dave gavit they're playing these games in his honor the creator of the big east conference well you really only have time here for a hail mary unless uh of course you play for arkansas then you can just flip it around about a half a dozen times for miami let's see if they get dorial green beckham down in there and maybe throw it up in his direction well just throws it away and that is going to end the first half an entertaining first half carolina 14. tennessee 10. we now go to kurt benefied and the gang standing by in los angeles for the visa halftime which begins right now [Applause] the excitement brought to you by nissan [Applause] and that was today's excitement brought to you by nissan and we're at nissan stadium here in nashville and welcome to the broadcast booth mr davis so we figured this had a chance to be a pretty good game naturally you're going to think carolina you know another team two and six of tennessee big favorites carolina but tennessee's a confident looking team right now been a good first half it's almost like they took that deep breath cleansing breath no one likes to see anyone lose their job but they seem to be a lot looser a lot but playing a lot freer when they go out and do things and of course the win last week helped them do that what i'm looking for in the second half to see which deep i'm going to go up to the 21 yard line and let's check in uh there's a penalty flag and i'll tell you what there's a lot of pushing and shoving and john going on really since the opening kickoff of this game definitely a no back down game for either team during the return holding number 56 receiving team after this is to the goal from the end of the run first down downstairs with tony thanks tom i had an opportunity to talk to both coaches uh coach mike malarkey uh when i spoke to him he said you know we need to do a better job in this secondary with our coverage too many guys running wide open we have to believe we're in the same situation we were last week someone just needs to come up and we need to need to make a big play here in the second half ron rivera i asked him what didn't he get accomplished in the first half he said we called a couple blitzes we need to go and get that done when we call it blitz it's got to be a big play we can't give them life and then you you need to do a better job than mariota we got to keep him contained in the pocket he's too much of a good paid friend well both quarterbacks were very very good in the opening stanza mariota 12. noon you see 12 out of 13 with a touchdown and on first down stewart who had a very quiet opening hand it'll be a gain of three on first down and some of the numbers anything jump out at you mr davis as they take a look out third downs for the tennessee titans four of seven that's huge for them when i look over for tennessee excuse me for carolina nothing in particular jumps out but 44 rush yards okay normally this is a team that's gonna average about 130 yards a game or so so when they run the football they're not getting what they normally get they average 142 per game they're the number one rushing team in the nfl so far they've gone 19 straight games with over 100 yards rushing and short of a first down is stewart up to the 20-yard line take a look cam newton a terrific first half throwing the football one point was 12 for 12 before the last incompletion and greg olson running uncovered into the secondary had a big first half two extra offensive linemen two tight ends check in for carolina on this third and one the norah cersei has been active from the secondary position four tackles in the first half and again there without starting corners mccordy and cox third down october gets leveled by williamson but it looked like he had enough for a first hand you get a guy like tober you got to gang tackle him one guy's not taking him down you can't you can't one guy can't wrap his arms around mike tolbert no it's true it's like trying to tackle a piano i mean look at it they did a nice job as you point out tony having more than one person there but he got enough for the first down before they were able to do so tolbert's a nice solid player into the pro ball as a fullback young 2013 been a good player a long time first with san diego and now a little closer to home where he collegiately cam avoids a sag but then is caught from behind that's a great job michael griffin as you said tom you got to be relentless you got to keep coming after a guy like this let's take a look at where he was going first with the football they were going for the big one downfield they wanted ted ginn but it was well covered so when he pulled it down then from the back side why did michael griffin get him from the backside tony as you talked about the blitzing of tennessee that's it they had michael griffin on a blitz didn't get home at first but because they covered well in the secondary they were able to get him on the second move the big plays come on defense when you're relentless second seven so second down and 17 in a timeout charge timeout carolina they'll take a timeout we will do the same just underway in the third quarter the hillsborough burrows advancing to the third round of the tennessee 5a playoffs craig clayton their head coach up next independence and we thank paul jones no problem firing a receiver on that team with those shirts guys but a bunch of construction guys out there very nice second down 17. newton in trouble and he can run it run out of bounds at the 15 yard line i'll tell you what the pressure is really starting to get there isn't it yes it is dick lebode said you know what we're going to put some pressure here in the second half it's tough to get this guy down though charles it is tough to get him down but they're flushing him faster and making him have to make decisions and receivers have to change their routes to try and get open wesley woodyard chased him out before he had any chance to get set up and find anyone downfield and you wanted to escape to that side his left side so he's not able to throw the ball downfield and newton sacked to the [Applause] a week ago and that's his sixth of the year and let's and let's go back to what tony told us at halftime what did mike what did they say that they needed a better job of tony mike malarkey they said he needed better job coverage in the secondary well they got it on the last two plays because cam newton didn't have a chance to find anyone he said we're in the same situation where last week someone's got to come up with the big plays and obviously on this drive his defense came up with some big plays covered it and iraq at home for a sack [Applause] so carolina scored touchdowns on its first two drives they have done nothing since then and look at that roll it's like dexter mccluster down the sideline did not step out of bounds sometimes it's better to be lucky than good guys amen to that brother amen to that will you be the judge hit this ball hit out of bounds it certainly looks like you could have a case that it did right there see the ball but laird hayes the official was right on the sideline staring it down he had the best view and he determined that the ball stayed in bounds and boy how big was that for carolina's defense to pick up the additional 20 yards all right first possession of this half for mariota first down throw right on the money and a gain of seven on firsthand catch made by justin hunter when justin hunter caught that ball it was like a pitch from down here on the on the field man you hurt and you know the thing that was probably really underestimated about marcus mariota coming out of college was his accuracy we all talked about it because his numbers were incredible but a lot of that was attributed to the oregon offense and how many guys were wide open when he threw the football he's an extremely accurate thrower even in traffic gain of eight second down and two and andrews will find a little seam in a crease to pick up a first down up to the 41. [Applause] [Music] well in the first half we were we were talking a little bit about cam newton and his orchestration of the offense how he has full control of things marcus mariota is a very young rookie quarterback but he is in charge of his offense as well not to the extent that newton is just yet that comes with todd but on the other side luke lee the all-pro middle linebacker is a total charge of carolina's defense that was a hit right there now coming down to make the tackle you like those don't you t oh man i'll tell you collisions i you live you live for him i'll tell you when you're a defensive line you want to hear that that pad's cracking he comes through the line of scrimmage and boom and tony kaiwan shorts getting all the attention right now and letulla lay went ahead of him in the draft i think there's a little healthy competition from the la tuna lay right now and nothing better than a little competition wanting to catch up to a grind that's right he's been slowed down by a foot injury so far this year and what a play that is by e.j klein he was a man who filled in for geekly when he had the concussion in week one and ron rivera really likes the way this young man out of iowa state is playing in his third year and he's filled in so well that eventually ron rivera said you need to be a captain i'm elevating you because you played to that level because he also helped fill the gap with charles johnson getting hurt while jared allen was getting acclimated after the trade over from chicago and by the way they're hoping to get johnson back he's due to come back thanksgiving against dallas payton his way to come here on this trip he's not allowed to fly with the team [Applause] mariota just throws it up there and it is intercepted now there was a rookie mistake by mariota and coleman makes him pay with a secondary like that you can't just toss it up like that and you know something i think it was two rookie mistakes guys mariota with the throw and look dorial green beckham doesn't make enough of a play on the football to help out his quarterback interception results [Music] well mariota's rookie thrown into the ring of fire nashville tennessee i think when he was throwing that one he was trying to get it to jackson didn't quite get it there but he heard [Applause] [Music] from last week then nothing will stewart run down by avery williamson that's a nice play by the tennessee linebacker tennessee defense is really having a strong half but on this last interception i think it was a combination of things if marcus mariota is trying to get rid of the football and just trying to throw it out of bounds he's got to put more mustard on it but i think he was trying to give his young receiver a chance to make a play on the football door green beckham is 6'5 almost 240 pounds and he put it up in the air and doyle green beckham didn't go get it the way he needs to so two rookie mistakes on that play turned into a turnover for carolina second down at 12. again caught it at the 48 yard line it'll bring up third down and five we're talking about carolina got off to a great start back-to-back impressive touchdown drives very quiet ever since ever since and then you saw it touchdown touchdown and pump punt punt and right now in the second half tennessee's defense has been doing the dictating to carolina's offense well it's coming again newton throws and that is a first down they convert on the catch by again right at the yard market and a good job by ted ginn you see this you see the bunch formation over here okay and then the breakout gin runs the shortest route and gets to the sideline but understood where the sticks were that's a veteran receiver he gets a lot of criticism for drops and rightly so too many it has a veteran move understanding where the first down line was and getting his team exactly that again has found a home in carolina a really good year two years ago left to go to arizona last year and back playing well again for the panthers this year well after the one-yard game let's check in in los angeles for the first time today with our buddy mike hill thanks thomas lyon's trying to win that green bay for the first time since 91 this helps samir abdullah second half kickoff takes it five yards deep inside his own end zone and he's going 104 yards down inside his own one before his tackle brandon pettigrew will later score in the two-yard catch with matthew stafford the extra point no good however lions up 9-3 in the third green bay is struggling guys that's an exciting youngster that here dueling when [Applause] green bay was dominated for three quarters last week by this panther team high snap and newton's just going to throw it away see they can take that piece of tape right there if you're tennessee and say marcus if we're gonna get rid of this is how we get rid of it go back to the interception by mariota if you're gonna get rid of it and not not not take a try and make a play you to get it way over the sideline and cam newton with his strength even with woodyard all over him is able to get that done and avoid the loss of yardage third down and nine at the tennessee 45 yard line let's see what they dial up this time different ball and ray horton have really found a good pressure package to hurt carolina in the second half his secondary has got to defend that yellow line now here they come newton throws a jump ball to contrary and no chance so again carolina will send out the punt team and the front coordinated with the back watch the pressure coming here but the secondary also does a nice job of covering because that's cody riggs number 37 who's playing time has really gone up with the injuries in recent weeks to some other corners all over qatri on that play no chance to fit that one in [Applause] pair catch handled by mccluster in the 11-yard line it's unbeaten carolina team making the trip into nashville and so far only a four-point lead it's been a good day for both of these quarterbacks cam at the fast start but they have really been slowed down ever since really think dick lebeau and ray horton the guys coordinating the tennessee defense have found a terrific pressure package that's working against carolina so far the biggest one is but not allowing them to run the football and dash them on the early downs [Applause] [Music] mariota first down throw a catch [Music] it's our nfl salute to service for supporting the pat tillman foundation uso and the wounded warrior project to learn more log onto nfl.com salute love the respect these guys are giving all of our people who are in the armed forces and serving for us love seeing them greet them before the ball game give them the respect they deserve yeah we thank them very much antonio andrews up to the 20-yard line will be about a yard short of a first down tackle by norman [Applause] i think tennessee is sneaky in running the football they can they've gotten some pretty decent consistent gains throughout this game trying to tamp down some of that pass rush pressure that carolina's brought at people all year long they struggled early with it but they seem to be finding some cracks as this game has gone on too tight package lozano and stevenson [Music] [Applause] who generally is as sure-handed as they come i think he saw so much open space that he tried to go before he secured the catch things happened really quickly but you see he sees kurt coleman coming at him and i think he was thinking about the move he was gonna have to put on coleman to get up field and didn't secure the catch very unusual for anthony fasana [Applause] that was a huge play right there guys sure was field position wise so now again to returned 187 yards for a touchdown but it was called back because of a penalty from the 27-yard line and a good return by again up to the 40. we'll see if newton and the panthers can get anything going against his titan d [Music] the first time in nfl history three teams 8-0 to begin the year we know about tom brady and the patriots averaging nearly 35 a game the bengals will see them in two weeks is this the year andy golden has come of age cam newton and the panthers leading the league in rushing yards never if three teams started a season nine and uh new england plays a giants later first down throw and again heard footsteps and a penalty is thrown as to norris circe appeared to make a blow to the head on ted ginn jr because he covered it well and again knows he's coming and he tries to do the right thing by leading with the shoulder but he's up high in in the target area and that's the hard part because i'll bet you unnecessary roughness number 21 defense contact to the head and neck area 15 penalty from the previous spot first down carolina he's trying to do the right thing but the problem is the target area always changes and so where he's targeting again and now again drops down and he's up high it's the correct call it's exactly the letter of the call this wasn't helmet to helmet it was just that he's up in the neck and shoulder area that's a problem it's tough as a defender to go and know where receiver's gonna be target area changes on you in the course of the play and that's what ended up happening there and ted ginn absorbed the brunt of it and a first down for carolina it's a 15-yard penalty ball up the tennessee 44-yard line right back down the middle of the field and this time it's functions and that's the first down to the 30. i think they've realized carolina that the weakness of this team for the tennessee titans is their defensive secondary and i think that's what they're going to start attacking because obviously they tried to come out and establish the run they're not getting that done with the front seven of tennessee but they're just gonna go and try to attack that secondary prior to this drive 27 yards on 22 plays the last four drives for carolina to your point tony blitz coming newton looking for again in overthrows and because the character of carolina's team is what run the ball first they're trying to do heavy play action stuff still trying to freeze tennessee before throwing the football you know the last couple throws that cam newt's completed play action hard play action get the ball out of his hands quickly quick slants put dig routes inside to the receivers carolina only has 54 rushing yards today and again they have a stretch of 19 in a row where they have run for a hundred or more newton long throw and there is kim boy that is some kind of cannon you know when they don't bring the fifth guy or or blitz on cam newton he has all day in the pocket and that's when these secondary guys these defensive backs are just getting beat and tony mike remembers who is an undrafted free agent at right tackle really does a nice job helping protect cam newton they all do but he's got the front side part with derrick morgan one of their best pass rushers in the face of newton and he keeps him well away so he can deliver the ball first down at the 18 they put it in the hands of stewart and that'll be a gain of close to six on first half see this is where the drop by fasano really comes into play doesn't it you guys you guys noted it about field position and they ended up getting the ball and it helps the drive tennessee would have had a drive continuing and at worst change field position instead here's carolina knocking on the door they just haven't run cam newton very many quarterback runs today i wonder if they're just trying to keep it and keep the number of hits on him down as soon as you say that he fakes to give and then a penalty flag comes down in the backfield casey the first one there going to be face masks to look like on cam newton personal foul face mask number one offense 15 yard penalty should we fit you for a straight shot second down right here 20 yards away when he goes down you could stiff arm in the face but you can't grab the mask you see him grab the mask right there right there affect the neck that's something you can't do [Applause] that's one rule that goes against the quarterback would that be the only rule that's about it there's a big halo around him and a big spear can't go in that area but they will get called good eyes on that play tony to catch that one in a great shot from our great crew catching it you see cam newton you're right getting the step arm but he did totally twist the mask of jerrell casey so they were inside the 20 now they're pushed back too close to the 30-yard line need to get to the eight to get a first down and they're going the wrong way and that's the pressure we talked about you know you're bringing the linebacker on that you got five guys they're not getting there with four but when they bring that extra guy you put a little bit more stress on an offensive line and this is when they're finding the big plays happening for tennessee see how they're changing up the blocking assignments as well because on that play they were showing one thing and then next thing you know popping out of the pile was 54 avery williamson to help finish things off he ended up unblocked because i think carolina got confused in their blocking assignments david bass also flying the pressure there part of that sound so now third in the mind newton steps up catch is made by conjuring is that the ball without no they're saying he was down at the 30. so this would be right at a 48-yard field goal attempt by graham goneau as you can definitely see the intensity of the tennessee defense look at the swarm getting to them at the end of getting the cadre at the end of the play yes he goes down ground causes the cause of the ball to come out but bw webb 38 on the scene cody riggs 37 and then a host of other blue shirts got there too long on the year by ganoa's 52 this one from 48. and it is good i think a challenge flag was thrown as to whether or not that was a fumble by mike malarkey well it should be i don't know why they challenged it as soon as his forearm hits the ground the play is dead and prior to the snap tennessee has challenged the ruling the previous ruling on the field that it was a catch and the runner was down by contact all right well they're going to take a look at it sort of hard to understand why in the world mike malarkey and the titans would be challenging this call doesn't make any sense from what we've seen about why this would be challenged look cautery goes down as tony pointed out forearm and ball here after reviewing the play the ruling on the field is confirmed the receiver's elbow was on the ground with firm control of the ball he was down by contact tennessee will be charged with its first timeout please reset the game clock to 28 seconds so whoever's in charge of that upstairs they may have a different assignment going forward because that wasn't even close and that was the angle we showed going into it anyway so i don't understand that part the only thing that can bail him out now is if they miss the field goal he can say hey we ice the kicker that's it there you go because he made it a moment ago from 48 yards away this is graham gannon and it is hammered right down the can so for the first time since back-to-back drives to begin the game panthers come away with points this time a field goal but tennessee hanging in there tick lebeau and ray horton have done an excellent job since those first two drives defending cam newton and the panthers my biggest concern in the first half as you heard me say multiple times is that greg olson was running free as a tight end going into going into the secondary well the titans were trying to put their pressure package on and leaving him free hoping to get to the quarterback in the second half we haven't mentioned greg olson's name because the pressure package is actually working they're getting to the quarterback so chipping the tight end stopping him isn't the same deal they've taken care of it by getting to newton and erasing the passing play but still a one-score game for mariota and the titans in the final 23 seconds of the third quarter through the back of the end zone it's first down from the 20 and the notorious conor mcgregor has taken over this season of the ultimate fighter they call me an instigator a troublemaker a wild card and a rebel again so don't miss an all-new ultimate fire wednesdays only on fs1 hey i'm telling you guys he needs to call me because he needs to start trademarking his new nickname the notorious c mcgee his people will be in touch charles sometime around never roman harper finishing off the ball carrier andrews on first down that'll be a final play of the third quarter 14-10 at halftime 17-10 as we're off to the fourth nfl on fox will continue after these messages and a word from your local fox station will newton and the panthers stay unbeaten 10 we're set to begin the fourth quarter here in nashville tennessee titans with a football second down and 10 from their own 20-yard line we talked about mike malarkey taking over and wanting to get his philosophy in which is he wanted a physical tough team that doesn't beat itself don't forget he also made a change and made jason michael the new offensive coordinator jason michael college quarterback for the national championship he calls plays for the quarterback's eyes and i think that helps marcus mariota second down they're gonna run it and just not much room there that is sanctuary we see the leaders today for the tennessee titans mccluster with 25 yards on the ground delaney walker as expected leading receiver and now on defense there's there's a stunner luke has the most tackles for carolina and josh norman they've thrown at him one time he knocked it away they have been thrown at him since [Applause] [Music] [Applause] he is sacked all the way back to the 10 yard line and now they have to punt it carolina does a really nice job of showing blitz right up in mariata's face and he doesn't know he keeps calling different protections and he's running out of time and then the bad snap i mean just a bad series right there for that yeah they showed it and backed out and i wonder with all the orchestration he was going through calling who the mic was getting the protection set if that distracted him a little because the snap was not a poor one ted again standing in midfield waiting on the punt by brett kern chasing him all the way back to the 34-yard line and look out kim cuts it back to the middle of the field and is cutting down at the 43 yard line [Applause] tamiya stafford able to trip him up great field position after the carolina defense stands tall on third down [Music] it's carolina defense boy they are as advertised they've been in the top ten the last three years the only other team that can say that the only two seattle and the 49ers that's best big time company right there when you talk about putting that type of production out now the next step for tennessee they'll control those half can they create a turnover make a big play take it away from carolina quick throw the contrary in red beautifully on the far side by cody riggs a rookie out of notre dame riggs nice job with an open field tackle like that i mean he identifies it knows the receiver's backs to him and closes in quick wraps him up great open field tackle on this this one we talked about the first half of how well carolina closes cody rich trusted his eyes saw the play no hesitation went right to the receiver and made the tackle blitz coming on a second down to 12. first time we've said the name greg olson since the opening quarter right now let's check in with kurt menifee for a game break we mentioned earlier that kirk cousins have thrown four touchdown passes the defense helping out as well desean golson picks off drew brees it actually went through the receiver's fingertips but nonetheless 35 yards later they're up 44-14 from charles and goose that seems to be the one team nobody talks much about in the nfc east and just when you think they're going to take a step back here they come again and we thought the march [Applause] [Music] third down tolbert out of the backfield and he is taken down first down to the 17-yard line by bwim the most underrated aspect of mike tolbert's game because he certainly doesn't look it is his ability to catch the football watch tolbert get out of the backfield and make a really nice catch and then of course look at what happens after the catch see i caught that one that wasn't a body catch hands catches the ball soft puts it away and now go ahead deal with it deal with me lift them arms around good luck with that stewart with running room back to the inside and he's inside the five yard line you learned something carolina long in new england and cincinnati all being undefeated here's an interesting stat it doesn't hurt the bengals and the panthers 18 of their drives this year most in the nfl have started inside their opponent's territory both create a lot of takeaways ladies and gentlemen takeaways turn into short fields those usually turn into points first and goal the five newton keeping himself trying to turn the corner and about a foot short from a touchdown smiling while he's getting up it really showed a formation to the opposite side because they went with three offensive linemen and had michael orr flipped over to the opposite side as an extra as the tackle and then newton ran it back short side [Applause] and was just just a little bit short getting to the end zone this is usually where they want to run the big guy now in terms of newton remember against green bay we just stretched it across the ball had to be removed we'll reset the play clock to 10 seconds it'll wind on my signal so they need to get up on the left you have to be ready to go yeah greg wilson said forget that huddle stuff let's go stuart waiting on a signal not given yet [Applause] [Music] [Applause] said they're marking it just a little bit short remember it's where the ball is when they blow the whistle to end the play so let's see if we can determine that in this pile of bodies this massive humanity and i think they got it right i don't think stuart got to the got to the end zone now you can see the feet of the official running hand karen he blew the whistle that's how you can tell where the ball is when that beat card drops this tennessee titans defense has really played well in the second half and they point back to the atlanta game when we were here guys that goal line stand they had it ended in an interception when they stopped demarco on third down for the falcons running the ball they said that was a watershed moment for this defense this year and they just did it again forcing a field goal instead of giving up a touchdown [Applause] so now graham gonna hit from 48 a moment ago there's a chimp shot 20 yards out it is good woodyard making the stop of tolbert holding the panthers to three [Music] carolina 906 away from going to 9-0-1 the year new england will play later this afternoon in the meadowlands against the giants we know the history there in being undefeated the bengals will play at home tomorrow night against the houston texas and you said earlier no team has ever no three teams have ever gotten the 9-0 in nfl history we'll see if that holds the most fearless voice in sports we'll talk all about it he's on fs1 and one and only colin calvert tomorrow will talk with champ bailey and joe theisman every weekday at noon eastern only on fs1 and we saw joe t in atlanta he must be promoting something you know he doesn't go on tv unless he's getting a check back i love joe tony tony tony we're waiting for colin to call you and offer that check for a little time to find something for you we'll figure something out there you go [Applause] all right panthers have work to do the titans have work to do down by 10 and that's not a good way to get it started third week in a row ely comes up with a sack and guys we've talked a lot this half about how well the tennessee titans are playing on defense here's coney ealy who's really jumped his game up from his rookie year where he struggled and struggled but look at him stay with it and continues to pursue and get there but guess what this carolina panthers defense we haven't talked as much about in the second half they're not letting the titans gain it's a really really really good panthers defense [Applause] second down mariota looking for a screen and this time wisely throws into stands he's learned and now kinkley's gonna ask and say was he in the pocket and throwing it away and that would be a safety for intentionally grounding in the end zone and walt anderson informed him no he's not getting that call so there we go the chess masters are bobby fischer boris baskey right here kiekley on the left the middle linebacker mariota on the right the quarterback matching wits and keegley has the full authority to change defenses change calls as he reads the quarterback and what he thinks they're trying to get done third down and 17 they need to get to the 28-yard line mariata fires and well short of the first down catch made at the 20 by justin hunter tony thomas davis of the panthers told us we don't have to be the best defense in the league although we want to be but our goal is every sunday to be the best defense in the game we're playing [Applause] tell you what he's got it right i mean they don't they don't uh they'll give awards out for for defenses that don't go and perform week in and week out you can't overlook you got to play the game that you're playing you want to play better than the other team again we'll turn to the 25 yard line across the 30 to 35 and spun down right there [Applause] colin jones so close to getting this one and look at the look at the control of the game this half carolina ball control they haven't gained many yards but timed possession is huge and look at the first downs for the half carolina has seven tennessee only one and tennessee's done an excellent job on defense [Applause] are you kidding me holy mackerel what a catch by olsen i guess it doesn't matter if you cover him or don't cover him he's going to get the ball and why was this ball thrown because he saw the back of brian arapko a rakbo to him okay with the back of showing see the helmet he's not seeing quarterback or ball at all you throw it to the receiver and that allows the receiver to uncover himself in the route even though it appears he is covered he's not the other hand is still not touch the ball he caught it brought it in cradled it and used the other hand to land softly on the ground and remember when cam throws it it's not usually a touch pass is it it's usually it's usually usually a little zip on it look at that to your point one hand cradles it to the body as you said tom the second hand never even comes into play other than he'll break his fall greg olson went to the pro bowl for the first time last year make your reservations for this season greg olsen you know you still you look back and you say how in the world do the chicago bears trade this guy two years after drafting in the first round i couldn't [Applause] he missed the first two games of his nfl career with a knee injury in the preseason of his rookie year he has never missed a game since then 134 straight coming into today and that's amazing longevity and durability in this league and this tennessee defense which has been so valiant this half you get the sensor worn down a little bit guys they've been out there a lot and had to deal with a lot of plays carolina's offensive take a look at the clock they're just wearing the clock out long drives keeping it going moving the chains not giving an opportunity for the other team but is this not really what carolina is they're not running the ball as well today they may not get to 100 yards they're knocking on the door they have 87 cam telling us it's a first down to the chagrin of the tennessee faithful but again we showed you the 8-0 teams brady new england averaging 35 a game dalton and the bengals so many stars on offense dalton having a big year and then there's carolina quarterback can do a little bit of everything they just find a way to win games and they control the ball they don't turn the ball over and give the opposing team extra time [Music] well we remember drew brees out of the nfc south they started off the season 13-0 in 2009 lost their last three but of course they went on to win that super bowl roman harper reminds his teammates of that regularly and now with the panthers and cam has said what did you get to again 13-0 so what is the goal now for cam and the panthers he wants everyone on this team for them to remember that this team was the best team that they ever played on so his goal is 14-0 and he goes out the back door first down to slide down to the 24-yard line and bam you know you know what's very interesting is we asked ron rivera a very simple question said ron you're an old school guy you grew up in a military family you played for the chicago bears and buddy ryan and mike ditka why would an old school guy like cam newton well he jumped on that one like he said because he is old school and that and and then when it went and explained it old school in his will to win old school and he doesn't care about statistics old school and his toughness and it will battle for every yard jonathan stewart will make it 20 straight gains for the panthers of over 100 yards rushing more importantly for him he carries down to the 10-yard line the offensive line which struggled with the pressure in the second half from carolina is really starting to exert itself in the run game down the stretch giving the running backs giving cam access to the secondary and they're taking advantage of it you know you guys talked about undefeated teams how about the new england patriots guys all the way through the whole season lose to the giants in the super bowl the super bowl we're going to see a little matchup of that later on today they went 16-0 0-7 during the regular year stuart to the one yard line they had the 70s they had the 72 dolphins really uneasy because they weren't they was gonna crack that champagne and now we've got three making them keep keeping keep the champagne on ice so far that's not how you start but you know what's interesting about that is that dave mike schull is offense coordinator of the panthers don schull of course coached the 72 dolphins first time he's ever said first i've ever heard coach schiller say it's okay if someone else gets there because it's his son well you know how much was made cam early in his career his body language turned a lot of people off of charles sort of surely pouted a lot but look the guy is still was still so young i think we forget that so often and you put a lot on him the number one pick in the draft face of the franchise immediately veterans help bring him along and thomas davis who's one of the best veterans you're going to find we asked him about that and what did he say it's night and day he said but he was a young man who was had to deal with a lot and had to mature and we're seeing that now each and every day and all those little kids right there you won't have any problem finding out that they're cam fans no their only problem is who's gonna wrestle who to get a touchdown because they're down there line it up [Applause] tennessee saying not fair third down and goal titans have done a nice job down there now whatever you're going to say about this titans defense they battle you on every snap sure do and have all day long they will not make it easy for you [Applause] looks like al woods who's played his way into a starting job is the injured titan look at that score at the bottom lions could win there for the first time since 1991 in green bay three points for green bay in the fourth [Applause] quarter a nice moment before this game got started today charles look at that that is steve mcnair's son the legend here for the tennessee titans as trenton mcnair and he's meeting with cam and cam understanding the history understanding really whose stadium this is and was which was steve mcnair's can you talk about toughness if you're gonna have a toughness hall of fame for quarterback steve mcnair his first ballot he would get out of hospital beds on saturdays and play on sunday and go right back after the game was over he was something else but look at that trend mcnair not weaving wearing dads number nine wearing camp newton's number one right here in this stadium many a battles and tony you know all about him am i wrong about steve's because you've had some great battles and i'll tell you just like you know on our way to the super bowl we had to come through here tennessee and he uh i'll tell you what you couldn't give him any kind of breathing room because if you did he could explode and he could change the game in a second and uh they had some great teams and for a great battle a lot of memories on this field i have a lot of members and tony those battles as we take a look at out woods going off the field and look at this and most rush touchdowns by quarterbacks all the time cam at 38 steve mcnair at 37. cam chasing steve young at 43 but that toughness of steve mcnair not just his skill correct i'm sure you have plenty of respect for mcnair's toughness i'll tell you what he one of the toughest guys i've ever known especially at the quarterback position just uh i mean you'd hit him as hard as you could you're like he ain't getting up he jumped right back up and you know i know ray lewis hit him a couple times and i heard it across the field steve mcnair never stayed down what a hard third down and goal gonna reach over and it is a touchdown so add another to that list for cam newton and avery williamson had had enough it's a frustrating day for the tennessee titans and they feel like the celebration was excessive and this is this is the this is the flip side his teammates get him the opponents aren't real happy with it and he'll go retrieve the football and not a kid this time but when you wear the number one jersey that helps you if you're an adult but yeah you see the flip side right there you see you see why people battle about it you understand titans thought okay you got in okay how long do you have to stay there and regard knows he's in it and you can understand those you told that way totally i mean if you're on the opposite side you're not thrilled at all it's a 30th game in cam newton's career he's had a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown steve young had 31 for the most of all time newton now with 30. you saw that and then now taking the ball to the stands for the fans and i asked the question this week do you get fined for that because you know balls in the stands only if you kick it or throw it do you get fined by the league because they're worried about safety of someone getting hit and getting hurt when you hand it over there's no fine the trial is good offside number 28 defense that five yard penalty will be enforced on the kickoff panthers about to go to 9-0 [Applause] and if you play with cam newton you get it but as an opponent games decided that's an extended celebration if you're an opponent tony siragusa you've been in these situations before you know at a certain point right celebrate but let's move on williamson and crew jumped in on it listen you know you you can't disrespect the other team at some point you got to act like you've been there before you know there's one thing about celebrating and another thing about rubbing in the other person's face because at some point in your career you're going to be that other guy and you don't want them to do that to you so it's a it's a respect thing that players have in this league so 237 left we take a look at the remaining schedule for the panthers this year we will see them at home against washington next week they go to dallas and tony romo figures to be back for that game and don't forget that's thanksgiving that's a big one for them all right so they go there a prime time a featured game and then then they got atlanta right two times and in between that that's the one a lot of people are pointing to is the game with the giants in new york because true cold weather game that could be the only one that they play all year long by the way washington's playing they better not look past next week you're right not at all you know no one talks about them it's interesting nobody talks about the redskins talk about dallas and you know what are they going to do when they get romo back and you know philadelphia had a big lead early in the game now they're losing to miami in the fourth quarter who wants to seize the nfc east we keep waiting for who it's going to be will someone emerge look at that beautiful beautiful throw to hunter and that'll take us to the two-minute warning two minutes away from a 9-0 start by newton and the panthers well we'd like to tell you bonus coverage coming your way we'll bring you the conclusion of the lions and packers big upset brewing there that green bed geekly on this top let's check in with mike kill back in los angeles cowboys [Music] about jameis he doesn't look like a runner but he can still move it around pretty well and unfortunately on our last play ben injury justin hunter tennessee grad who threw a tremendous block on that bounce ball last week in new orleans that delaney walker caught and took for a touchdown threw a great block to finish things off here's hunter there he was right there on the sideline tillman he gets rolled up on as keegley makes the tackle on dexter mccluster that's unfortunate well they're going to bring out a cart that's so unfortunate trying to trying to make a play make a block for his teammate and behind him pyle rolls into him and justin hunter was really starting to feel better about things mary had a big drop in our game against atlanta but since then he's really started to come on not in terms of numbers but better blocker you know i talk about that blocking through last week for delaney walker really helped his credibility with his teammates and with the coaching staff and you just hate to see that happen and luke keegley making it making a tackle a normal tackle turns out unfortunately he's made that on dexter mcclusker you know guys if you look at plays in this game and what really turned the game around that anthony pizano dropped i think has come back to a great point well certainly our thoughts and prayers with justin hunter being taken off the field that was a very gruesome injury hope he gets well very fast they've had tough luck with those types of injuries ryan schweinke earlier this year against miami they're starting center as this one winds down [Applause] richardson who had to come into the game after the justin hunter injury a free agent undrafted but got everyone's attention he ran a 4-3-8 in pre-draft workouts and all of a sudden people were like let's take a look at this guy [Applause] game today produced by mark titleman directed by greg scopatone our associate director alex olson it is [Applause] that guy keegley man he plays to the last second on the clock i'll tell you that he's something guys he usually takes it away with interceptions he had coming into the game he had a big interception in overtime to seal the victory against indianapolis this one he knocks away i believe that's his first force fumble of the year and boy was that impressive that was textbook that's training tape right there in terms of the tackle you told you talked about it earlier tony being able to get good position good leverage almost like the wrestling moves that you put on in high school when you were a state champion yeah i never shot i never went for the legs these guys tonight rest are always too big to squish me take them up top up top up little greco roman there you go a green bay has scored so five minutes remaining in that game we're going to be sending you there after one more snap of the football well we told you newton a rushing touchdown he's thrown for a touchdown 30th time he's done that in the game steve young the all-time leader with 31 of them wow yeah people forget the athlete steve young was huh oh yeah son's going to do it there is carolina panthers will go to 9-0 on the year new england will try and go to 9-0 later today cincinnati tries to go to 9-0 tomorrow so we're going to take a timeout we will come back and tie a ribbon around this one 27-10 carolina wins it you're watching the nfl on fox
