so this is the moment that uh so many been waiting for the men's 10k here at ep tom sawyer state park we're going to crown an individual champion as well as hand out some all-american honors and of course that prestigious team title that so many teams look for the firing gun has been let off and we are racing here in terre haute with some of the finest student athlete distance runners the country has to offer making their way down that long front straightaway out of the starting gates in front of hundreds of thousands of fans that have made their way here to louisville these opening moments bob we always talk about pacing and finding are you trying to find that other contender that you know you're going to be matched up with early on in the start you well maybe not right away but within the first 60 to 90 seconds you are and it's really the start of cross country races you're running a little too fast you're kind of on the edge like oh this is a little too fast and then you settle in once you get your position set i heard uh edward cesarec of course uh from oregon going for his third straight national title you know i've watched a few of chesrix races that he's involved with seems like he likes to get in that lead pack and just kind of slow everybody down is the key to maybe beating him somebody jumping out front really pushing the pace i don't know if it's pushing the pace from the start but it's at some point i just talked about this earlier he he will easily dictate the race that he wants to run if you let him if everyone keys off of what's what's ed doing what's he gonna do is he ready to go uh then that's what he wants it's to get him out of his comfort zone uh uh we all we used to talk about it when i was running like make them ask the question about what they're doing when they don't want to answer it so put put pressure on them when they don't want pressure put on that's ed treserick on the left of of your screen running along that red line he's in really brilliant position right now for where he wants to be yeah cesarec in that uh that bright oregon yellow that has become so noticeable over the years running third thomas curtin right behind him for virginia tech he's got that that hokey maroon headband that's very distinguishable and the leader right now is patrick tiernan one of the tallest runners that you'll see the aussie for for villanova of course he's a senior this is a big opportunity for him uh excuse me he's a junior and so far uh he's kind of stretching it out as we've hit the two-minute mark he he is and and marcus o'sullivan is a long-time coach of villanova uh um used to run with marcus quite a bit when we were competing ourselves and and i don't think this is just a random act they've talked about this they've talked about their ace plan to me it seems really early but it could also be this uh changing a pace let's go hard let's set the tone and then let's change the pace throughout the race and see what happens and tiernan has had a pretty good season so far bob he's had a great season he's undefeated he's been winning the last few races that he has run by large margins so he's no stranger to running out in front like this which is important because you have to mentally and emotionally be ready to be the leader that's a that's a that's a stressful thing to be you mentioned uh the dominance that he showed in some of his most recent races uh he beat runner-up jonathan green by 21 seconds at the big east race and then two weeks ago with the mid-atlantic regional he won by 26 seconds so i mean that has to do a ton for your confidence knowing that at least in your regional and conference meet nobody was in your league it does yeah now you're ready like okay now i'm ready for ed chesrick for anthony rotich for thomas curtin let's go get him see the field making their way around one of the very impressive corners uh the regionals as we talked about uh patrick tiernon picked up that win at villanova for villanova in the mid-atlantic regional for the team titles and those regionals very competitive and we saw some very impressive performances by a lot of very very strong teams there's a look at your 2015 regional championships most of these races were run about two weeks ago and uh and you see the heavy hitters they prepared themselves for nationals very well bob by capturing some regional titles yeah and the men's race is a little interesting because these were run about like you said not too long ago and it's 10 kilometers and so recovery between hard 10 kilometer efforts is not always the easiest thing in the world and so to have great teams to win championships or get on the podium that takes great coaching to understand that process of getting to this meet ready to go want to expound on that point that you made in terms of recovery period after you ran a hard 10k uh what was the toughest thing when did you really feel good uh after running a 10k that you felt like i'm ready to run a little bit more it was probably well you were running the next day of course but but that stiffness and soreness and then really hard effort probably a good four days later but you still have it in your legs and your body even four five six seven days later uh after a hard 10 kilometer effort how about the preparation in terms of leading up to an event bob uh tapering is a is a physiological science but also a bit of an art and so i think the most important part of being ready for a championship is obviously your coaching coaches preparing you physically but being emotionally and mentally in the right frame of mind confident uh that you're prepared that you're not on your back foot you're on your front foot and uh and then you come in here with confidence see patrick tiernan again leading that group uh the tall lanky uh aussie from villanova doing a great job dictating the pace but there's edward cesarec just to his right in that bright yellow and then the utep uh the runners that we expected co-etch and rotic right there in the pack as well that's right and there's the first syracuse runner up in the lead pack as well it also looks like mark scott from tulsa the british national who's also undefeated this year right up there in that lead back yeah and he's kind of a guy that from tulsa that you were keeping an eye on as is maybe a dark horse in this event he's a dark horse like he said he's undefeated he's got some great track credentials uh um 1336 28 30 uh 5k and 10k uh and he he's equally as talented as the rest of the lead pack is there any way of of really deciding and knowing at this point uh what type of time you're gonna see from some of these top runners in the 10k in the nationals oh in this race they just went through two kilometers and and um you know they're running roughly i missed the split but let's call it three three three minutes a kilometer so that's obviously 30 minutes that's what i would expect somewhere in there time and cross country is kind of a moot point i love the way we used to run it in europe when we ran cross country they're like i think it's 10 kilometers but start here and you finish there and if you win you win you know kind of like that it kind of kind of simplifies it a bit and and it works but certainly for a lot of these runners they have a pace in mind that they want to run probably looking for a specific time for those runners up front ultimately position is what what ultimately matters and they're looking they're really paying attention to effort it's hard to run off of splits and time as your gauge of where you are and what you're doing across country and so they're really paying attention to effort how am i feeling am i am i exerting the right amount of effort uh um does this feel the way i'm supposed to feel some of those fans hustling over to some of the cool vantage points around this course here in louisville kentucky mentioned earlier in the broadcast uh ep tom sawyer state park used to be a farm until they turned it in uh to a state park and we were talking bob a little bit of everything here they've got a swimming pool they've got a bmx a bike track they've got just about everything you can enjoy but for today all eyes on cross country yeah it's a great set we talked about this earlier it's a great setup for cross country it's a fair course it's got some rolling elevation changes uh good turns that aren't too sharp that really distract or distract uh interrupt the flow of the race uh and it's a great course great setup eight minutes into this event obviously you were able to see the front runners in terms of the individual race that team title always a little tougher to follow but so far a bit of a surprise syracuse uh trending towards the win as of right now iona a bit of a surprise in colorado down there in third again this is all unofficial early in this 10k race but so far things looking good for syracuse yes syracuse is obviously getting off to a great start after two kilometers i wouldn't put too much credence in the top five spots there they're gonna they could change dramatically as the race unfolds fans lined on both sides here of the track you see about the three maybe four runner break away here with tiernan uh you've got edward cesarec there as well as the two texas el paso runners of coach and rotic that have had tremendous seasons all year long and and that bodes really well for for the future of utep running because for rotitic he's a senior but for coach is a guy that's just a freshman uh and we saw it in the women's race with ali alstrander she came up a little a little short second in her first uh national event there's nothing to hang your head about because she's going to have some big days ahead but uh coach is another runner from kenya that's going to be awfully impressive for the years to come right and and and and who knows he might steal the show today but they just went through three kilometers uh very different than the women's race at this point and you know we've got four athletes that have broken away from the pack uh and tiernan is pushing the pace i'm going to be really curious to to watch and usually watch uh how he tries to win this race so this is kind of i don't know if they think about this way but this is the setup phase right this is okay we're going out hard i'm going to push the pace i'm going to string the pack out i'm going to separate into guys who are willing to run hard today but now he's got to figure out how to win the race you know one of these four is going to do something it's not going to just accidentally happen you got to make a move i would love to see him change tempo very hard to see on camera whether he's doing that or not and maybe you can see that when he strings out like that a little bit even those few meters that is a change in tempo that he is he is accelerating a little bit to keep the pressure on or to add uh uh uh that little extra effort that's putting pressure on the guys behind them and i misspoke the fourth runner in line there is actually a runner from syracuse that is justin knight so uh he's i got a really good performance going on keeping pace with that front pack but as we watch tiernan again lead the pack there's the size differential you see it there he's a large guy yeah well i had that a little bit i'm six foot tall and i seem like a giant sometimes against some of these other guys who are five five five six just about 11 minutes into this men's 10k national championship event trying to put edward chesure's dominance in perspective i mean we've never seen in cross country someone win three back to back to back national championships which he's trying to pull off today yeah that it would be phenomenal and it's been you know a century or more of events double a cross country running with some amazingly talented athletes over the decades run uh for three and four years and that's not happened uh and so for him to win uh for his third straight uh uh would be something uh that'd be special to be here to witness and be a part of that's tiernan uh leading the pack edward cesarec right there in second and that bright yellow you see the front four have kind of pulled away here with 11 and a half closing in on 12 minutes into this men's 10k hard to keep track of some of the team runners we still saw colorado struggling haven't seen a lot of their runners towards the front but as they they make that stretch there right along the the road with the lead card watching those lead runners uh you're going to see an opportunity for for maybe some of your favorite school runners to uh come around that last corner there yeah it says the flag there on the right of the screen says 5k but that's not gonna happen in 12 minutes so i'm guessing that's just a different part of the loop they all look comfortable uh you know it's interesting that they're running in a line uh that means the pressure that the tempo is hard enough uh where where where they're trying to keep the pace going uh if they were bunched up a little bit you'd say okay slowed down a little bit if tiernan was changing paces you would see that accordion like uh motion from these four guys they'd string out like this uh then they pack up again and string out and pack up but he think i think he just is having a continual pressure to the pace applied at this point you see a lot of the runners making their way around one of the corners here at this spectacular course as the skies have as we mentioned got a little dark you may not be able to tell by some of these camera shots but compared to how it was i don't know bob 5 10 15 minutes ago the conditions have changed the wind has picked up it's gotten a little bit more chilly and uh certainly those lungs got to be burning just a little bit more for some of these runners oh yeah yeah it's it's it's it's getting a little dark here i do think the rain's gonna hold off for the race part of it and i don't think the athletes at this point are thinking about that at all it's just it's just the spectators in us at this point impressive performance early on by patrick tiernon from villanova setting the early pace in this event edward cesarec trying to keep pace with him some of the utep syracuse runners having good runs as well including justin knight as we're just about 13 45 into this men's 10k the women's race that we saw you know somewhat similar we saw three runners kind of break away but molly seidel had that kick at the end to really pull away uh you would expect that uh this front four how much longer can those guys stay together bob i think for a while they're they're really approaching halfway and they're they're coming past the finish line here uh soon and heading out to their second loop of the race i expect you're gonna see some sort of move uh uh in that second loop now it looks like it looks like chesric and tearing might be putting a little gap on on uh the other two guys yeah the runners were uh now in our view for the first time as they make their way down this straight away and cesarec now has pulled even with tiernan as they race down this straightaway and gave him a little look over to his left these guys just pace and as you mentioned only halfway at this point then as they make their way under the bridge where we're standing uh you like what you're seeing stride wise from those two runners bob i do they both look very much in control patrick tiernan looks really great right now and chesric looks great too and they're biting their time uh and it's gonna be a race between those two at this point so it is again tiernan cesarec the runners right behind him are uh justin knight and anthony rotich then we see some of the other team runners we see one of the colorado runners another syracuse winner there's thomas curtin making his way under the bridge coetch has dropped back a little bit into a fourth or fifth group we see some of the rosa brothers making their way underneath the bridge here so so far a lot of these guys pacing themselves and in terms of that team title hard to tell we've seen some syracuse runners some colorado runners and some stanford runners everything seems to be pretty tight bob yeah it's hard to pick out at this point the team title here we get the 5200 meter split which is an interesting distance to have a split but it's that european though but we're gonna look at the scores the team scores that come up yeah i see some of the uh the top runners making their way across martin hay here from syracuse one of that one two three punch for syracuse he runs in the top 15 front two though as you see have distanced themselves quite a bit from third place running anthony rotich from utep fourth place running just tonight from syracuse it appears as of right now it's a one-two race between villanova's patrick tiernon and oregon's edward cesarec 16 and a half minutes uh we're nearing in the men's 10k here in louisville kentucky your eyes watching those top two runners here tiernan and edward cesarec and you saw edward chesrick just look around that could mean anything could mean nothing but but tiernan has been in front pushing the pace the whole way and the question is is he applying the pressure and he's applying to cheshire is is there something going through chesrig's mind that he's asking himself uh uh if he can do this if there's any doubt at all and if if that is happening and patrick tiernan can continue to apply pressure when chevron doesn't want the pressure he applied that's when he breaks them and of course we're keeping an eye on that team title as well as of right now it appears that syracuse stanford and then colorado as that that kind of midway point standing started to come across uh it does appear to be fairly tight though so still a lot up in the air in terms of that for syracuse that's a program i mean bob i hear about colorado and stanford all the time in cross country pretty impressive what this syracuse program is starting to build absolutely and chris fox has been there for uh you know i don't know how many years but not decades and he's done a a great job building that program from scratch really syracuse stanford colorado the three we expected to compete and bob as we look at those splits boy that is awfully awfully tight that's very tight about halfway through the race to be within 40 points and and remember that's the third fourth and fifth runners in the middle of the pack that can change within the span of 10 15 meters when you can pass 10 guys and and in four or five seconds and change the dramatically the team score and you know you think about that syracuse fourth and fifth runner that that you know you and i we kind of talked about i read a lot about it online about if they can find a fourth and fifth runner uh maybe they can contend all indications the fourth and fifth runner dan lennon for syracuse as well as as joel hubbard those guys they've heard it they know that they've got a great one two three punch on that team and and certainly a lot of pressure on those guys to hold into their end up in the bargain to try to capture this team title well i like to bring i i love when guys break races into segments so they're doing what they need to do right now now their next phase is what what is the sixth seventh eighth ninth and tenth cake look like uh 10k is a long race and a lot can happen in the seventh eighth ninth kilometers uh and it will and so uh uh they're out where they need to be right now in order to have a shot at winning this meet and i'm sure coach fox is out there screaming at him somewhere uh to keep it going so we'll see if syracuse is uh one through five can hold up what we saw at the halfway point which is them trending towards taking this top step uh and winning the team national title our attention shifts back now to the individual race and again tiernan and cesarec they've kind of been locked you know hip to hip heel to toe but really bob for the majority of this race cesarec not letting tiernan get away not necessarily sure that's what tiernan's trying to do is get away but certainly he's been the one pushing this pace as he's led really this race from start right i'm not sure he's necessarily trying to get away or expects to get away but he's definitely trying to run a race where ed chesrick uh is not in his comfort zone bob i did this race with you a year ago in terre haute and i was blown away because it was a 10k race and really for about seven and a half to eight kilometers it was the runners all in a pack a pack of 30 or 40. this is so much different from what we saw a year ago is this just tearing and thinking hey i got to mix it up if i'm going to beat a great runner like edward jesurek right this is their plan whether it works or not we'll see but they've decided that in order to have a shot at beating him we are going to put as much physical pressure on him the whole way that we can and we'll see what happens at the end of the race and certainly uh for so many of these runners it comes to that final kick is what they call it that final push towards the end of the finish line and as we've seen edward cesarec is certainly one of the best he is he's got a great leg speed he's run 336 for 1500 meters uh he has the wheels but over 10 kilometers having flat out the best leg speed the best 800 the best mile time matters only a little bit it's about your lactate threshold how you've managed that and where you are over the entire 10k distance which will dictate the kick that you have left look at some of the pack uh making their way around this course many uh coaches uh fellow runners make their way out on the out on the racetrack if you're a cross-country coach one of the top ones what do you do throughout the course of a race i mean i know you're giving that probably that last minute instructions to the runners at the starting line but do these coaches try to get to as many points as they can around this track throughout the race the coaches they know their teams and they know kind of where they need them and so one coach might be at three kilometers one might be at eight just depends on where they think their team needs them and they also know their strengths and weaknesses so if if there's a coach out there says my fourth guy is my key guy today and i need him to be in 50th or 80th or 100th he's going to be where he thinks he needs to be to make sure he knows that you got to pass 20 guys or whatever whatever the number is when we took a break after the women's race i asked you bob you ever consider getting into coaching and you said no because my instructions would be too simple you said you'd have a pretty instruction pretty simple instruction for your runners what was that i said i don't know if i have the patience for i said just i don't understand why you're not running fast yeah just run faster it's certainly uh it is not that simple there is uh so many uh physical and the mental aspect of this sport is what i've been blown away because we talked about the race from a year ago the national race completely different from what we've seen so far today absolutely and i think i think patrick tiernon is showing us one of the things about distance running 10 kilometer racing is it it's uncomfortable it's it's physically uncomfortable and once you accept that then you have a chance of seeing how good you can be and the amazing thing about what patrick tiernan and edward cesarec are doing is you know for the first couple first 2k 3k of this race bob it was a four horse race with justin knight from syracuse who was running very strong we saw anthony rotich the senior from texas el paso he was right there you didn't you couldn't even see those two in the in the frame of that last shot uh tiernan and cesarec have really put the hammer down and this is uh this has been a fun one-two race watching these guys run shoulder to shoulder right they just went through eight kilometers so two kilometers remaining uh and this will be a phenomenal finish you saw ed chesrick pull up on the shoulder of patrick tiernon uh that's either patrick taking a little break which happens and getting ready for the final push or ed chesrick saying hey i'm right here you know you haven't gotten rid of me yet if you're ed chesareck do you wait till that last stretch to put the hammer down or do you not wait is this when you should make a move and pull away from patrick tiernon you know the these these the part this part of the race is uh more instinctual and so uh they're both kind of going through their mind right now what their options are and a lot of that has to do with how they feel it's very possible one or both of them are just hanging on they're struggling they're just trying to hang in there and hope the other one falters before they do it's possible they both feel great and they're trying to to to decide what their their move is going to be uh uh and so it's going to be made they're going to instinctually decide and act on that over the last 1500 meters all right starting to see some more runners rotitic has dropped to fifth uh some of the syracuse runners still holding strong as that team title certainly up in the air with many of these runners jostling for position but all eyes are on patrick tiernon trying to pull off the upset i i hate calling it an upset because patrick tyrion is a tremendous runner but so much pressure has been put on edward cesarec everyone just expects him to roll into this event and win for a third straight time that this run to the finish bob is going to be a lot of fun to see if uh can pull away or hold off edward chesareck yeah and i mean i think you're right in calling it a a now they're making a move right now look at the turnover chain on chess change on chesric he's gone in front and he's trying to get away yeah he is making the round around that corner and you can see tiernan those legs looking a little heavy not able to pump nearly as quick as edward cesarec and this is where king chez as they call him usually makes his move we saw him stretch out 10 or 15 yards there around that final corner as we've hit the 25 minute mark we're awfully close bob to seeing these runners come around that final corner and it does appear that edward cesarec has decided now is my time now is when i'm gonna make that move right it's still a long way out that's over a kilometer out and and a lot of times what happens is if you are the favorite you will make a strong move that you're not sure you can keep up to get away and and have the other guy quit boy i'm not saying patrick tyrion has quit looks really good right now and he just looked over his left shoulder to see where tiernan was and as you can see he's a good 5 30 40 yards behind edward cesarec as a freshman wanted as a sophomore going for an unprecedented record-setting third straight national champion uh chip bob this is this is just i mean this is incredible what we've seen and again as you said tiernan hasn't quit but as we saw him run by their pace is definitely yeah no he this is a tough time for him he's hang on he wants to finish second i love this i would and finish second then to run in the pack and finish second third or fourth you know patrick tiernon needs to be really proud of his effort today it's a spectacular race edward chesrick is a phenomenal athlete he's going to win a lot of races uh he has won a lot of races a lot of races going forward yeah as you mentioned the good news for tier off uh come on buddy straight away they're ready to see some history saw some oregon fans here earlier today appreciate you hanging with us here on a gusty day here in louisville kentucky where we're about to put a bow on the men's 10k in cross country edward cesarec has stretched that lead out on patrick tiernon and as we see these runners come around the final corner bob and make their way for the front straightaway this is certainly one of the most impressive performances edward cesarec about to put a bow on a very impressive individual personal dynasty 10 out of 12 ncaa championships he's running he's won he's got his arms up in the air right now saving to the crowd he deserves it he should big lead great title just about 28 and a half minutes into this race and edward cesarec is all by himself patrick tiernon uh probably 300 400 yards behind him edward cesarec waving to the crowd he wanted as a freshman as a sophomore and he's about to make history three for three you hold those fingers up young man edward cesarec is a national champion for the third time here in cross country he will capture the title for the oregon ducks here comes patrick tiernon bob as you talked about no shame in losing to just an incredible athlete uh like edward cesarec and as we see nobody's even in view behind tiernan a solid and impressive second place phenomenal second place run he's gonna grow from that effort the ability to go out and make the move and make the race is a great growing experience for him it's a spectacular runner he pushed the king unfortunately last straightaway here in third that's gonna be an awfully impressive run uh for colorado obviously looking for that team title to have a runner cross across the line in third that's awfully impressive uh for pierce murphy who crossed the line tonight for syracuse and fourth so that's uh about coming up and here comes syracuse's second and third runner in the top ten two stanford runners in the top ten yeah this is going to be awfully interesting this team title as you mentioned we just saw three syracuse runners syracuse i think has this here's their fifth runner before colorado's second or third no that's utep sorry they have very similar units yeah that was actually jonah kowech and anthony rotich who both crossed the line expected to contend probably going to be a little frustrated not to be in the top five colorado colorado maybe i was wrong here comes a couple more colorado runners this is going to be awfully close as you see uh some of these individual statistics start to come in this the positions and then that team score will start to cycle through as well it's the little battles i just saw syracuse's fourth and fifth runner beat colorado's fourth of his runner right at the line you know i don't know if that'll have an impact on the team score but it's those little battles in the back that really matter there's a look at our national champion from the individual standpoint edward cesarec such an incredible dominating performance uh really in the last two or three k and bob edward chesrick looked like he could do a couple more of these you know when you're winning it always looks easier than it is but he he he exerted effort today patrick tiernon uh made him work hard uh and he had to earn his victory again this team title is gonna be fascinating here over the next three or four minutes as we see this cycle through unofficially right now by a point over colorado stanford is right there but as tight as this is stanford oregon probably not going to be good enough some more results coming in sarah q still at the top now by three points over colorado 57 to 60 now syracuse over stanford over colorado and then stanford and as we see this shake through bob that might be what we see as we've seen 180 now cross the start finish line now syracuse by just two points so again this is all unofficial push away but you see it and if so syracuse about to pull off one heck of an upset over colorado unbelievable and there's your four-point swing this will change and when a race team race close they will look at it and look at the video over and over again but again those small battles in the middle of the pack to determine team champions it was it was a lot of fun runners come down this final stretch and oh some guys just out of gas some guys push it as hard as they can and now as these totals start to come in syracuse maybe a little bit of breathing room 78-87 right now over colorado as the rest of the field now making their way down this final straightaway to wrap up this event and that's an amazing upset that is an upset and we talked about the women's race in new mexico did their job edgar chizzeric winning molly seidel winning is not really an upset she's a phenomenal athlete with a 10 000 meter title syracuse bidding colorado would be an upset yeah just an amazing season syracuse has had some of their runners justin knight represented himself very well in the top five martin hayer had a great run colin benny has been a successful runner all season long for syracuse we've talked about needing strong performances by those fourth fifth and six runners guys like dan lennon as well as joel hubbard so for syracuse if this holds up it's going to be quite an accomplishment for that school as uh they've really taken a step into becoming one of the elite programs in cross country absolutely they've been good for a few years now and now they've taken the next step to elite and for edward cesarec i mean i don't i don't know what else to say i mean he's won three straight national championships he's only a junior there's been some talk will he go pro because certainly uh certainly there's some some money to be made for that young man uh but he also has the opportunity bob to come back next year as a senior and maybe uh pull off the four crown if you want to call with that right it will be interesting to see what he decides to do there is money to be made out there he's run 336 low 13s he's got another level he needs to get to to be one of the world elites he has the tools to do that and we'll see we'll see what he decides to do at this point enough runners have come in that i think it's it's probably fairly safe to call syracuse the champion as you mentioned how do they how do they decide how do they go back and look to make sure that all those positions because they all have scoring loops right they do and they have video at the finishing finish line and especially if there's a protest which i'm not sure there would be but with a nine point victory they'll make sure they got it right uh um uh and and crown crown syracuse the champion i think you're right certainly looks like syracuse going to capture the national title in the cross
